Book Description
Some people are born to lead and destined to teach by the example of living life to the fullest, and facing death with uncommon honesty and courage. Peter Barton was that kind of person.
Driven by the ideals that sparked a generation, he became an overachieving Everyman, a risk-taker who showed others what was possible. Then, in the prime of his life hugely successful, happily married, and the father of three children Peter faced the greatest of all challenges. Diagnosed with cancer, he began a journey that was not only frightening and appalling but also full of wonder and discovery.
With unflinching candor and even surprising humor, Not Fade Away finds meaning and solace in Peter's confrontation with mortality. Celebrating life as it dares to stare down death, Peter's story addresses universal hopes and fears, and redefines the quietly heroic tasks of seeking clarity in the midst of pain, of breaking through to personal faith, and of achieving peace after bold and sincere questioning.

Perhaps the best book I've ever read...........2007-07-15
My father passed away in the fall of 2006, from cancer, at age 58. I found this book during the winter, it was out of place and I picked it up. Maybe I was looking for meaning, I don't know. But I have read it cover to cover twice, and pick it up often to browse. It is beautiful, poignent, raw with honesty. On the surface, my father was nothing like Peter Barton, but as I read the book I saw my father in every page. Much of what I witnessed in his final months were hard to articulate, yet Peter Barton and Laurence Shames gave me the words I could not find.
A beautiful book about death and dying, about life and love and lessons. Read this book. It's more joyous than sad, more beauty than darkness.
I randomly selected this book...and I'm glad I did.......2007-05-25
I happened upon an advance uncorrected proof of this book quite by accident. I read a few sentences and thought, "Why not give it a read?" Well, I have to say that the book - both the writing and the content - are absolutely wonderful. Laurence Shames gets all the emotion and humility and pride down flawlessly in the pages of this book. You can't help but wish you had known Peter Barton after reading this.
Indeed, a LIFE Well-Lived.......2007-03-03
Mr. Shames wrote a poignant and very real account of the disease that took his life at a very early age. I read this a couple years ago, and just re-read after hearing the story of a "younger" person stricken with cancer. This book will inspire, but will also force the reader to consider; "What would I do? Would I have that much grace and zest and enthusiasm?" The dirt-nap gets us all, this book demonstrates how one man dealt with his impending demise---and teaches valuable life-lessons that we could all use. Highly recommended.
Inspirational Read.......2006-06-04
For Peter Barton, a maverick businessman whose career has been characterized by creativity and billion-dollar partnerships, the psychology of cancer was difficult to digest. Unlike most business agreements he has brokered in the media industry, the deal between a terminal patient and his cancer appeared to be a zero-sum game, and the forty-something year old media mogul struggled to bridge the disconnect.
Hardly a person to let death dictate the terms of his legacy, Barton preserved his insights on the matter before he left the living. As such, Not Fade Away -- Barton's chronicle of the last days of his life -- is an attempt at coming to terms with one's finality. The chapters switch back and forth from Barton's first-person narrative and the observations of Barton by a professional writer assigned to shadow the terminal patient during the last stages of his life.
Despite the subject matter, Not Fade Away is an uplifting read because even as death closes in around Barton, we see that life reveals itself in all its sublime beauty. Such a paradox, namely that death is infused with life, leads Barton to embrace both the fact of his imminent death and the ever-present life that surrounds him. Barton reformulates his understanding of the linear aspect of the past, present, and the future, and realizes their convergence and singularity. Just as death is a part of living, we are not fixed to a single point in time; the past, present, and the future are manifest in the now.
Although such notions are not terribly original, Barton's honesty and courage in sharing his innermost fears and doubts during the last days of his life provide a refreshing look at life, death, and perhaps what it means to "not fade away" in a language that resonates with timeless relevance.
What a brilliant life..........2005-12-04
This is easily one of the most inspirational books I have read in a long time. Peter Barton was an extraordinary buisnessman, father, husband and friend...a man who knew how to make each day count and to challenge a terminal illness in a way that must have made his family so very proud of him. I highly recommmend this book to anyone and everyone!!!!
Book Description
Thrown into action following the Torch landings of late 1942, the ‘green’ American pilots flying the obsolescent P-40F suffered cruelly at the hands of seasoned German fighter pilots flying superior machines. Those that survived learnt quickly, and a handful of Warhawk pilots succeeded in making ace by the time the Axis forces surrendered in North Africa. The action then shifted to Sicily and Italy, and the P-40 remained in service until mid-1944. This book charts the careers of the 23 men who succeeded in making ace during that time, despite the advent of much better P-47 and P-51 fighters.
Book Description
The first USAAF fighters to engage the Japanese in World War 2, a handful of P-40s rose to defend Pearl Harbor from attack on the morning of 7 December 1941. Warhawk units were also heavily involved in the ill-fated fight to stem invading Japanese forces in the Philippines and Java between December 1941 and April 1942 and again in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands between January 1943 and March 1944. This book examines The Warhawk’s wartime exploits and all of its aces including 'aces-in-a-day’ Mel Wheadon and Joe Lesika.

Another forgotten warrior.......2007-07-02
After reading Osprey's P-39 Airacobra Aces of World War 2 (Osprey Aircraft of the Aces No 36), I decided to follow up and read about the P-39's stable mate in the South West Pacific and its aces. As with the previous book, this one follows the now tried and true Osprey method of Introduction and then a round robin summary of the different areas of the Pacific that flew the P-40. As with the P-39, the P-40 was the aircraft enabled the US to climb back into the war. In the Appendices I learned that P-40's were responsible for 655 kills and was the aircraft that many aces learned from (actually it was amazing how many future aces started with the P-40 in the Pacific). For the chapters, the best was Chapter 2, Backs Against the Wall. I enjoyed reading about the early exploits of P-40 pilots against the Japanese in the Philippines and Indonesia. If there's a disappointment in this book, it's got to be Chapter 3, The New Guinea Campaign. Mr. Molesworth seems to have lost some steam at this point and focused on only a few encounters.
The bottom line is this is a solid 4 star book. The color plates are great for modelers or wargamers. While some of the descriptions could have additional information, this is a nice Reader's Digest about what the P-40 pilots did. Something that's seriously missing though is the lack of a bibliography. A bibliography does help me identify future books to read about things I'm interested in and I'm disappointed Osprey didn't include one.
great material - poor color plates.......2007-04-01
This is a great book. Unit histories and the photographs are excellent. However since I purchased it for modelling purposes I was extremely disappointed with the color plates. This is not the fault of the illustrator but rather the printer. Army olive appears as gray in the color plates and the color is very washed out. Individual details in the illustrations are excellent - color is not. Compared to the "In Action" series, color in these plates is really bad.
Book Description
This book details the colourful experiences of the elite pilots of the AAF's Tenth and Fourteenth Air Forces in the 'forgotten' China-Burma-India theatre during WW2. Inheriting the legacy of the American Volunteer Group (AVG), units such as the 23rd FG 'held the line' against overwhelming Japanese forces until the arrival of the first P-38s and P-51s in 1944. The Warhawk became synonymous with the efforts of the AAF in the CBI, being used by some 40 aces to claim five or more kills between 1942-45. This volume is the first of four covering the exploits with the P-40 during World War 2.
Customer Reviews:
Great reference on P-40s in the CBI.......2007-05-30
I ordered this book as a reference for a P-40 model I was building, and found it to be everything I needed and more. Plenty of photos, color plates and great reference material. It's also a good read, so it goes beyond a reference book. I highly recommend this book, as well as any book by Carl Molesworth, as well as the entire Osprey line. They've always been a valuable resource.
Aerial Victories Discrepencies.......2006-11-13
I love the air war in the CBI, so even though I am a historian amateur, I have a good knowledge about the air aces of that theater since I have read every book about the 14th Air Force, Flying Tiger, and the 23rd Fighter Group. The one flaw I see in the book is the list of aerial victories by the CBI P-40 aces. Unless, the United States Air Force had revises the confirm air to air victories of its aces, I believes the air to air victory list is incorrect. Otherwise, I would have rate this book as five stars.
John Hampshire is suppose to have 17 confirmed air victories. In the book, he is credited with 10 kills.
Robert L. Scott is suppose to have been credited with 13 or 14 confirmed air victories. Like John Hampshire, Scott is also credited with 10 kills in the book. After Colonel Scott had walk the entire length of the Great Wall of China in the 1980s or 1990s, he should have set out to get confirmation on 9 aircraft he had claimed to shot down. The man was really tenacious in achieving his goals no matter how incredible the odds were against him. If he really had shot down 22 enemy craft, then the
P-40 would be really be seen as the ultimate aircraft symbol that represent the air war in China.
Reviving the tarnished rep of this aircraft.......2006-03-22
In reading this well researched book, WW II Historians amateur and otherwise may be surprised to learn that the P-40 squadrons in this Theater had consistently excellent combat records against the Japanese Army Air Forces, not just in the AVG days but throughout the war.
Lots of good pictures........2001-06-08
An easy read, but not very detailed. However, it wasn't meant to be a technical analysis of the subject. I have read several books on this subject, so the names and events were familiar. If you have an interest in the CBI area of operations, you need this book. It's on my shelf as a keeper.
Another Good book by Osprey Publishing.......2001-01-03
The book P-40 Warhawk Aces of the CBI goes into great deal with the AVG (American Volunteer Group) early battles with the Japanese fighters and bombers in early 1941 through to 1944. The colour plates of the P-40s are well detailed adn the archival photos and uniforms also bring the book to life. This book also interviews many of the aces of the AVG and show explicit deatil of aerial combat over china

Book Description
The P-40 was a dependable warhorse that provided valuable service throughout World War II. The earliest operational variants were used to great effect by the famous 'Flying Tigers' in China, and the P-40 went on to serve in almost every theatre of the war. Modellers are well served with P-40 variants from major manufacturers and after-market companies, and this book helps make the most of the products available. The projects featured in clear step-by-step detail include a 1/32 'Flying Tiger' P-40B, an RAAF Kittyhawk Mk.IV in 1/48, a TP-40N two-seat trainer in 1/48 and an RAF Desert Kittyhawk in 1/72 scale. Superb colour reference photographs and detailed lists of kits and accessories available round off this authoritative treatment.

P-40 modelling help.......2007-05-09
A good cross section of projects. The finishing (specifically painting) techniques could be expanded, or even a separate chapter on painting and weathering techniques added to the book. I found the book invaluable to doing a quality build of a 1/48 P-40.

An Important Book--Unless You're an Idiot........2006-06-15
This book provides documentation and evidence as to the FACT that Osama bin Laden has acquired tactical nuclear weapons (the kind that could be smuggled in through unsecure borders and detonated in major cities).
It also provides an IN-DEPTH look into the writings and speeches of this wanna-be super-villain, his messianic complex, and his very dangerous megalomania in general.
Ostriches and those afraid to face the truth (or to act) bury their heads in the sand. Williams does not, and neither will anyone with a genuine understanding of geopolitics, world history, cultural realities and the nature of evil, which is the same as it ever was.
If This Doesn't Scare You, Nothing Will!.......2005-12-24
Williams begins with a several page cogent statement by bin Laden summarizing why he is against America, and the actions required for him to cease. Reasons include support for Israel, and occupation on Muslim lands, but nothing about Bush's "they don't like freedom."
Osama went to Afghanistan, according to Williams, partly because of its potential for funding terrorism via opium sales. Sales to the U.S. would not only provide money for his efforts, but also weaken the U.S. and help convince others that the U.S. is a corrupt society.
Money, however, is only an enabler. The much bigger issue involves what Osama has/could do with large amounts of money. According to Williams, a number of Soviet "suitcase bombs" are missing - though various sources disagree on what that number is (30-80 is the most credible figure). Worse yet, a number of them were already smuggled into the U.S. and secreted by the Soviets during the Cold War.
What exactly is a "suitcase bomb?" From various sources it is contended that they began weighing 800 lbs, then were reduced to 320 lbs, and in their last version - only 60 lbs. Explosive power ranges from 10-250 tons, to 1-10 kilotons. The Hiroshima bomb was 13 kilotons, and the Oklahoma City bomb was an estimated .2 tons).
bin Laden reportedly purchased twenty nuclear suitcases in Grozny in 1996 for $30 million in cash and two tons of heroin, and intends to explode 6-7 simultaneously in the U.S.
So why hasn't he done it? Williams (and other sources) state that the suitcases' nuclear triggers would quickly deteriorate to uselessness in about four months. That's the "good news."
The "bad news" is that through expertise provided by Dr. Khan (father of Pakistan's bomb), and the resources of Iran's and/or Pakistan's nuclear reactors, the triggers could be replaced.
Again the obvious question: "What are we doing in Iraq?"
Sensational, But Thought Provoking.......2005-09-26
Williams' thesis is that Al Qaeda used the enormous profits of its heroin and opium operations to purchase several "suitcase" nuclear weapons from Russian criminals. The suitcase nukes, which are hard to maintain, have supposedly been made ready for use by rogue Russian and Pakistani scientists. Worse yet, claims Williams, these weapons have already been deployed to Al Qaeda terrorist cells in several major cities in the United States, ready for an "American Hiroshima" that will kill upwards of 4 million Americans and devastate the world's economy.
Williams' claims are sensational, and they must be taken with a large grain of salt. His chapter notes show that Williams relied on newspaper articles, internet sources and rumor rather than privileged access to military intelligence. And the proposition that nuclear weapons are in the hands of Islamists begs a couple of key questions: why haven't they been used against the Russians, who have many mortal enemies in Chechnya? For that matter. why haven't they already been detonated in America, Europe, Iraq or Afghanistan?
Williams hints at some possible answers. Perhaps Al Qaeda has the weapons, but they are unreliable and difficult to maintain. Perhas bin Laden is just waiting for the right anniversary date--say, an October 7 (the start of the war in Afghanistan), or a January 15 (the start of the First Gulf War), or even a November 27 (the anniversary of Pope Urban's call for crusade in 1095). Above all, Williams argues, bin Laden and al Qaeda are patient--the fact that a nuclear weapon hasn't gone off yet is no comfort that al Qaeda isn't working hard to make it happen.
Another possibility is that al Qaeda understands that the nuclear destruction of one or more American cities could very easily lead to a savage retaliation by the United States. Even bin Laden may be unwilling to pick the ultimate fight with an adversary that is equipped with a large arsenal of thermonuclear warheads. In the face of an "American Hiroshima," I suspect that the American public and its leaders would be very hard to restrain, and that possibility may give pause even to a fanatic.
Still, the threat of nuclear terrorism is so dangerous that it has to be taken seriously. Imagine a single nuclear weapon exploding in Long Beach, which handles a huge proportion of the imports coming into the United States--apart from the tragic and enormous loss of life, the world economy (not just America's) would be plunged into a depression overnight.
For a more plausible but equally disturbing take on the nuclear threat, read Graham Allison's "Nuclear Terrorism: The Ultimate Preventable Catastrophe." Allison's argument is that the real nuclear threat comes from unprotected stockpiles of enriched uranium 235 in the former Soviet Union. The Bush Administration has drastically cut the funding for programs that were intended to secure these stockpiles, and Allison makes a very cogent argument that the war in Iraq has distracted the United States from the critical task of keeping Russian uranium out of the hands of terrorists. If a nuclear weapon does explode in the US, it may very well be a U-235 fission device (like the bomb dropped on Hiroshima) delivered by containership to a major port (Long Beach, New Orleans, Houston, Boston, or New York). Remember, U-235 weapons are so well understood and reliable that the one dropped on Hiroshima was not even tested--it was the much trickier plutonium implosion bomb that was the subject of the famous July 1945 test at Alamagordo. In 1945, the problem with a U-235 bomb was that it took an entire year to make enough enriched uranium for just one bomb--the Russians have solved that problem for al Qaeda and have left tons of material in scores of poorly proected sites.
And just in case you sleep well at night thinking that the Department of Homeland Security will be able to protect us from this nuclear threat and its aftermath--well, just consider the Bush Administration's recent performance in the face of Hurricane Katrina.
FEAR MONGERING BUNK-Presented as fact, when in fact it is fiction.......2005-07-11
What a bull crock of BS this book is. Something else written/invented to make people deliberately afraid.
What BS! If the Chechen Mafia had such things they would have already used them against Russia because
of their hatred for Russia. Williams is trying to sell the idea that the USA is going to have to worry?
Boy have I got a bridge to sell you. Fear mongering propaganda at its best! It really makes me wonder
who's agenda is being served promoting this tripe.
Some things to consider:
(1) The Russians are not stupid people to allow compromise of
their weapons.
(2.) The Chechens would have long ago deployed such a weapon if
they had one, and they have good reason to.
(3) Osama would have already used such a weapon against the US,
Britain,Canada, Spain or Poland
(4) The Russian mafia is not stupid either since they live in
Russia. Why would they want to destroy their own base of
operation?
(5) Islamic people living in 'oil rich provinces' along the Southern boarder of China near Afganistan
have as much reason to hate China because of the oppression they experienced. While China
was busy stealing rich Oil land the US looked the other way as the coalition of US led forces
moved into Afganistan.
This author must spend too much time in reading Steven Spiel-burg's stuff or he has been
a peyote vision quest that has resulted in full blowen paranoia.
I like what one critic of this book so aptly stated ...
"As for them owning 12 suitcase bombs, that's a well exaggerated figure
and could only be proposed by someone infected with delusion on a Michael Moore scale. "
Well Henny Pennythe sky is not falling.
I would suggest that if you are looking for a really good read on nuclear scare themes
go buy the book "TOMMOROW" or TRIUMPH by Philip Wylie. At least you know you are
buying a novel written by a great writer. Williams makes you think you are buying facts
that can be believed. Williams, Michael Moore and CNN do have much in common.
Valuable in presenting the Evil Ideology of Bin-Laden .......2005-05-26
This work is valuable in that it presents the evil ideology of Bin- Laden. If you are not a Closed- Minded Fanatic Believer in Islam , if you believe in individual freedom and choice then you deserve according to the Bin- Laden ideology to be exterminated. Only if you think exactly the way this narrow maniac thinks do you have a right to breathe on this earth.
For presenting a detailed picture of the Bin- Laden ideology this book is commendable.
As to the military- threat scenarios I think that after 9/11 there is not a sane person in the world who can say that ' great disaster' might not come again. It very well might. And there are an incredible number of directions and places from which it might come.
I do not however think that it can come from suitcase nuclear weapons of the former Soviet Union. The fact is we know of no such device being operable. And as another writer on Amazon has rightly said the fact that it has not happened yet is strong evidence that it will not happen. And there is one clear reason for this. Terrorists tend to aim to do the maximum amount of destruction they are capable of at any given time. They do not delay. If they could have done it they probably would have done it.
This again does not mean the West and the United States especially is not under greater threat than before. Since 9/ 11 there are many more Islamic terrorists in the world with one or another variant of a Bin- Laden like ideology.
There are too it is well to remember other kinds of dangers, especially the WMD threats presented by nations like North Korea and Iran.
It may well be that the threats mentioned in this work are not the real and the dangerous ones. But again no one can know with certainty where the next Evil may come from.
Whether the Intelligence services of the Western world will be ahead of the terrorists is not certain. Rather that is something to be worked for by them, and prayed for by the rest of us.
