Detailed Account of the Peninsular Campaign.......2003-05-29
All the major battles and campaigns are covered and I found the author to be refreshingly non-biased in his writing, offering laurels to those armies, soldiers and commanders that deserved praise, regardless of origin. The maps supplied, 22 in number, were detailed enough to follow the narrative but they could have been of a higher quality. The illustrations, 28 in number, were excellent. The choice of pictures and their quality (all colour prints) was outstanding and made the book that little bit more special.
I must confess that at times the narrative appeared to bog down, mainly when covering the politics of the war. That's not the author's fault but mine, I tend to appreciate the military aspects of a story more. These areas covered by the author in this regard where quite important to the story but I was always itching to get back to the battlefield and to follow the movement of the French and British armies as they maneuvered for another pitched battle.
Overall this is a great book covering this most important Napoleonic campaign. The author utilises numerous first-hand accounts from participants, both military and civilian and they blend in perfectly with the narrative. Its one of the better one-volume accounts and I would rank it along side another one of my personal favorites, `The Spanish Ulcer' by David Gates. I am sure that anyone who appreciates military history will enjoy this new title by Charles Esdaile.

Fusilier Cooper - Experiences in the7th (Royal) Fusiliers during the Peninsular campaign of the Napoleonic wars and the American campaign to New Orleans
John, S Cooper Manufacturer: Leonaur Ltd ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 1846771765 |
Book Description
FUSILIER COOPER. Private to Sergeant through seven campaigns. John Cooper enlisted as a soldier and was from a family of soldiers. In the Peninsular he often met his brother, who served in another regiment. John was clearly a good soldier, because he rose steadily in rank throughout his seven years of service. His story is told simply and directly and yet, in the manner of the best writers, he conveys to his readers a spectrum of detail, action and atmosphere that really bring the Peninsular and South of France campaigns to life from the perspective of an ordinary man serving in the ranks. At the First Restoration Cooper was dispatched to America, where he fought at the ill-fated Battle of New Orleans. Unlike most memoirists of the period Cooper thought to leave future generations excellent descriptions of uniform, kit, camp and other details of the British soldiers and regiments of the Napoleonic Wars.

Feminism Unmodified: Discourses on Life and Law
Catharine A. MacKinnon Manufacturer: Harvard University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0674298748 |
Book Description
Catharine A. MacKinnon, noted feminist and legal scholar, explores and develops her original theories and practical proposals on sexual politics and law. These discourses, originally delivered as speeches, have been brilliantly woven into a book that retains all the spontaneity and accessibility of a live presentation. MacKinnon offers a unique retrospective on the law of sexual harassment, which she designed and has worked for a decade to establish, and a prospectus on the law of pornography, which she proposes to change in the next ten years. Authentic in voice, sweeping in scope, startling in clarity, urgent, never compromised and often visionary, these discourses advance a new theory of sex inequality and imagine new possibilities for social change.
Through these engaged works on issues such as rape, abortion, athletics, sexual harassment, and pornography, MacKinnon seeks feminism on its own terms, unconstrained by the limits of prior traditions. She argues that viewing gender as a matter of sameness and difference--as virtually all existing theory and law have done--covers up the reality of gender, which is a system of social hierarchy, an imposed inequality of power. She reveals a political system of male dominance and female subordination that sexualizes power for men and powerlessness for women. She analyzes the failure of organized feminism, particularly legal feminism, to alter this condition, exposing the way male supremacy gives women a survival stake in the system that destroys them.

A Rosetta of Social Constructivist Radical Feminism.......2001-06-15
She has a requisite versing in philosophy as she appeals to provides epistemological shifts needed to question the meaning of difficult constructs such as gender. Being a lawyer, she is facile in illuminating basic assumptive inequities in Juris Prudence. I was most appreciative at her analysis of rape and shifting the definition of rape from penetration to violence and where rape is not an erotic act but one of dominance. She continues further and looks at how members of gendered class male define the sexuality of members of gendered class woman until we do not know what our sexuality really is.
She provides a variety of diverse topics but ties them together by pinpointing their interrelatedness in patriarchy. She skillfully examines issues of the first amendment vs pornography and aptly illustrates how the Bill of Rights is becoming a legal repository for male priviledge.
Ms. MacKinnon's messages are presented in multiple levels and at varying depths and accessibilities, one thing to know is that there is always another level of understanding to be attained from this book. The reader is assured that there is much here if she avails herself to it. Please do not short change yourself by a cursory reading. Ms. MacKinnon departs from Radical Feminist stereotypes in that she develops an experienced level of vulnerability in her speeches and the reader can actually feel the extent that she cares about women.
How fortunate that the paperback is hardy, because it travels with me often.
Thought provoking.......2000-07-02
Hateful Polemics.......2000-03-22
McKinnon represents a radical, and in my opinion, unacceptable view of feminism. There are better authors in this field such as Steinem, who presents a more balanced and substantially less radical viewpoint. McKinnon is to feminism as Louis Farrakhan is to Afro culture.

Handbook of the Birds of the World. Volume 5: Barn Owls to Hummingbirds (Handbooks of the Birds of the World)

Book Description
Handbook of the Birds of the World. Volume 5 (Barn Owls to Hummingbirds).Customer Reviews:
An unprecedented resource.......2000-11-09
The only real areas of concern, again in reference to the hummingbird section, were in the lack of consistency in the plates, sweeping taxonomic revisions, and editorial bias. Most of the plates are wonderful, but a few are so stylized as to scarcely resemble a real hummingbird, much less the one being portrayed (among the owl plates, too, are some exquisite portraits and some that are cartoonish). Some fairly major revisions of taxonomy - including lumping and splitting of species plus generic reassignments - provide food for thought, but many are controversial and may ultimately be rejected by the ornithological community.
More distressing are the expressed and implied prejudices of the section editor. When published observations disagreed with his unsubstantiated opinion on one issue, he repeatedly insisted that these observations must be wrong. As the editor is European, his opinions are no doubt influenced by his limited field experience with hummingbirds, but it is an abuse of editorial privilege (not to mention unscientific) to use such a forum to arrogantly dismiss the findings of one's colleagues. Moreover, among the 18 authors of hummingbird species accounts I found only a single Latino name and none I recognized as belonging to women, though there are many highly qualified and experienced Latin American and/or female researchers in the field. These are idiosyncracies of this particular editor, and I would not expect these issues to rear their ugly heads throughout the series.
