Book Description

Detailing the great contributions of psychic Edgar Cayce, Dr. Gina Cerminara examines how Cayce penetrated the "previous lives" of his subjects, and performed fantastic cures and prophecies that made him the most remarkable clairvoyent in modern history. Connecting issues such as reincarnation, spiritual healing, past life regression, hypnosis, karma, and parapsychology, Many Mansions looks at the legacy of Edgar Cayce's work in an authoritative and engaging dialogue.

Praise for Many Mansions:

"Edgar Cayce was clearly one of the most remarkable psychics who ever lived. Gina Cerminara's compelling book is. . .unique and extremely important." --Jeane Dixon

5 out of 5 stars Helps you deal with life better.......2007-08-10

A fabulous book, extremely well written. This is one of the few books that has impacted my way of thinking. After reading this I find it easier to accept a lot of depressing things I see in this world.

3 out of 5 stars Tough act to follow.......2007-06-27

I liked the book well enough, but I think Cerminara added too much of her own thoughts on the subject of reincarnation, almost reshaping the message Cayce brought to us through his "channeling". I would have liked to have read more of Cayce's words and less of Cerminara's "interpretations" of Cayce's readings.

I admire this man and wish his work would have been known to more people.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect explanations.......2006-10-25

This book is wonderful. You won't question any further about there being life after death. This explains it all. You can't help but be emotional when reading the case histories and I couldn't help but to begin to ask questions and receive answers from my spirit guide. If you are just learning about paranormal, psychic abilities, are an opening psychic, have questions on reincarnation, this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars A Profoundly Persuasive Book on Reincarnation.......2005-04-28

I still remember how I 'accidentally' discovered this book in the summer of 1972 when I was supposed to do my education dissertation.I spent days carefully reading Many Mansions and at the end of it my whole perspective on life had changed. Dr. Cerminara is logical and thorough.
Very few people can read this with an open mind and not be changed by its world view.
There was also a personal 'happening' with the book. While I was re-reading it a second time in 1973 it disappeared for a few days.
Later my father returned it with the laconic comment:" She's right. We live many lives."
I was surprised because we were a Catholic family and I didn't want to cause waves with my new found views.
In December of that year my father died. I was able to accept his death as one more journey since I felt reassured by his comment. I knew that he was alive but in another dimension. This thought was rewarded by a very vivid dream soon after his death.
One night I dreamt him holding a candle. He told me I should light one to symbolise the continuation of life. Then he disappeared in a rushing wind.
I sudddenly awoke to find the window near to my bed wide open. I had carefully closed it before I had gone to bed because my mother had reminded me to do so. Also a prized framed photo of my father lay broken on the floor.I felt that somehow my father had reached out to confirm what he had said about Cerminara's book.
I think many will be comforted when they read this book. The examples of the subtlety and complexity of the law of karma will stun many.
Dr.Cerminara allowed me to look beyond many experiences I have had in this life and intuit what karmic lessons I needed to learn.
I am delighted that this book is still available. Reading it could change your view of life and its purpose.
I also read two other books that Cerminara did using the Cayce readings. They were 'Many Lives,Many Loves' and 'The World Within'. If you find them you could continue the interesting journey into the world of the Akashic records, karma and reincarnation.

                    Book Description

At the end of the 18th century Spain remained one of the world's most powerful empires. Portugal, too, was prosperous at the time. By 1808, everything had changed. Portugal was under occupation and ravaged by famine, disease, economic problems and political instability. Spain had imploded and worse was to come. For the next six years, the peninsula was the helpless victim of others, suffering perhaps over a million deaths while troops from all over Europe tore it to pieces. Charles Esdaile's brilliant new history of the conflict makes plain the scope of the tragedy and its far-reaching effects, especially the poisonous legacy that produced the Spanish civil war of 1936-9.

This is a serious and balanced book based on multiple reliable sources in the different languages that people that fought and has written about that war used; not just english: language and people. Specially interesting is the use of french sources and the analysis of civil population suffering inflicted by the french with retribution and counter retribution by spanish, portuguese ,french and so on. No doubt it is a clasic already, along Gate`s Spanish Ulcer and Lovett`s Napoleon and the Birth of Modern Spain in english; for the social aspects of the conflict Artola`s Afrancesados is still unmatched but not translated into english.

5 out of 5 stars Best overall view.......2004-03-04

Esdaile's book is simply the best overall description of thePeninsular War. He realizes that war and battles do not exist in a vacuum from politics as well as the reverse, that war involves fighting. He thus spends much time on the intricacies of Cadiz government to show the limitations of the Spanish forces. His theses on the regular army and the guerillas are expanded from his early works as is the realtion of Wellington to the Spaniards. The Duke is not mythologised, but he is shown to be the outstanding personality of the war. Although his descriptions of battles are limited in scope and scale (see D. Gates "The Spanish Ulcer" for a better strictly military history), Esdaile places the war within the structure of the other conflicts at the time. This book is the definitive description of the entire war.

                    3 out of 5 stars Rather unbalanced.......2003-09-30

The author makes a worthy attempt to say something new about the war, but the start of the book is turgid to say the least. He tries to provide a full socio-economic context for the events in the Peninsula, but goes around and around in circles over spain. Undoubtedly it is good to use the underutilised Spanish sources, which are indeed interesting, but the fact is that the war begins in Portugal, yet is is scaracely given more than a few pages of background. The maps are useful, but there is little meat in a lot of what he says. As a beginner's book, this would leave a lot of confusion. As a definitive work, there is little new apart from the Spanish sources. Perhaps a more clear organization of the book, with appropriate chapter headings and a better index would help. By the time he gets to the Pyrenees, he, like so many other narrators, has long since run out of steam, yet it is in some senses the crux or end of the story, even if it did not take place in Spain. I wish authors dealing with this period would get over the annoying habit of mentioning what will happen later, and then giving only partial information, for example Zaragossa. Perhaps a detailed list of all the battles/main locations with key dates/events might, but as it is it makes everything seem very patchy and badly thought out.
Perhaps if he had confined himself to Spain in the Peninsular war he would have done a great deal better. Likewise, a volume on Portugal, and on the Pyrenees would make much more sense than what he has ended up with. Since he has used so many Spanish sources, some of the basic ones British ones are badly neglected.

5 out of 5 stars A highly critical history of the Peninsular War.......2003-06-12

Esdaile criticizes the mythological role of the partisans in the Peninsular War and the contention tht these irregular fighters had popular support. Esdaile believes the partisans were nothing more than draft dogers and bandits, who hindered rather than helped the Spanish cause. According to Esdaile the use of these guerrillas hampered the Spanish war effort because they took away valuable men from the army and committed numerous crimes against the civilian population. Esdaile states in this book that the guerrillas were motivated by personal profit and not by any sense of nationalism. In the concluding chapters of the book, Esdaile believes it was Napoleon blunders by asking his subordinates to launch offensives in eastern Spain which led to the western part of the country vulnerable to Welligton's offenisves that ultimately ended the war. I would reccomend this book to anyone who wants a new view of the Peninsular War.

4 out of 5 stars Detailed Account of the Peninsular Campaign.......2003-05-29

Charles Esdaile's new book on the Peninsular War offers readers a comprehensive and in-depth study of this savage conflict that raged across Spain and Portugal between 1808 and 1814. In over 510 pages of text the author takes us through the reasons why this war started, the battles and campaigns as it progressed over the years and the many interesting facets behind the characters involved. Not only does the author cover the military aspects in detail but also he does not neglect those other important factors such as the politics of the Spanish Junta, Guerilla warfare and the effects on the civilian population.

All the major battles and campaigns are covered and I found the author to be refreshingly non-biased in his writing, offering laurels to those armies, soldiers and commanders that deserved praise, regardless of origin. The maps supplied, 22 in number, were detailed enough to follow the narrative but they could have been of a higher quality. The illustrations, 28 in number, were excellent. The choice of pictures and their quality (all colour prints) was outstanding and made the book that little bit more special.

I must confess that at times the narrative appeared to bog down, mainly when covering the politics of the war. That's not the author's fault but mine, I tend to appreciate the military aspects of a story more. These areas covered by the author in this regard where quite important to the story but I was always itching to get back to the battlefield and to follow the movement of the French and British armies as they maneuvered for another pitched battle.

Overall this is a great book covering this most important Napoleonic campaign. The author utilises numerous first-hand accounts from participants, both military and civilian and they blend in perfectly with the narrative. Its one of the better one-volume accounts and I would rank it along side another one of my personal favorites, `The Spanish Ulcer' by David Gates. I am sure that anyone who appreciates military history will enjoy this new title by Charles Esdaile.

FUSILIER COOPER. Private to Sergeant through seven campaigns. John Cooper enlisted as a soldier and was from a family of soldiers. In the Peninsular he often met his brother, who served in another regiment. John was clearly a good soldier, because he rose steadily in rank throughout his seven years of service. His story is told simply and directly and yet, in the manner of the best writers, he conveys to his readers a spectrum of detail, action and atmosphere that really bring the Peninsular and South of France campaigns to life from the perspective of an ordinary man serving in the ranks. At the First Restoration Cooper was dispatched to America, where he fought at the ill-fated Battle of New Orleans. Unlike most memoirists of the period Cooper thought to leave future generations excellent descriptions of uniform, kit, camp and other details of the British soldiers and regiments of the Napoleonic Wars.

                          Book Description

The Peninsular War (1808-1814) was part of a twenty year struggle waged by Britain and its allies against Napoleon Bonaparte. Previous works have neglected the role of the Spanish and Portuguese themselves, a failing corrected in Julian Paget's comprehensive account of 28 battles in the campaign.

2 out of 5 stars Another Travel Guide.......2001-05-14

Paget has produced a simple travel guide for those visiting the British battlefields on the Peninsula with battlemaps, orders of battle and some general remarks on the armies and their commanders. If you must have a travel guide I recommend Ian Robertson's WELLINGTON AT WAR IN THE PENINSULA. Paget came out of the Guards - so there you go.

Julian Paget describes every battle with detail and wit and is clearly the expert on the subject. His book is perfect for any student of the Peninsular War or just anyone interested in the subject. Includes profound information of the various regiments and characters involved.

                                  Book Description

Catharine A. MacKinnon, noted feminist and legal scholar, explores and develops her original theories and practical proposals on sexual politics and law. These discourses, originally delivered as speeches, have been brilliantly woven into a book that retains all the spontaneity and accessibility of a live presentation. MacKinnon offers a unique retrospective on the law of sexual harassment, which she designed and has worked for a decade to establish, and a prospectus on the law of pornography, which she proposes to change in the next ten years. Authentic in voice, sweeping in scope, startling in clarity, urgent, never compromised and often visionary, these discourses advance a new theory of sex inequality and imagine new possibilities for social change.

Through these engaged works on issues such as rape, abortion, athletics, sexual harassment, and pornography, MacKinnon seeks feminism on its own terms, unconstrained by the limits of prior traditions. She argues that viewing gender as a matter of sameness and difference--as virtually all existing theory and law have done--covers up the reality of gender, which is a system of social hierarchy, an imposed inequality of power. She reveals a political system of male dominance and female subordination that sexualizes power for men and powerlessness for women. She analyzes the failure of organized feminism, particularly legal feminism, to alter this condition, exposing the way male supremacy gives women a survival stake in the system that destroys them.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite MacKinnon Text (so far).......2006-03-05

                                  Wow.

If you've yet to lay your hands on anything "feminist" this is the place to start. If you've already dug around in the liberal feminist pit, and are looking for some original work, MacKinnon's work is the place to dig in.

MacKinnon's book is a collection of talks she wrote, and subsequntly spoke, for college campuses. They are witty, entertaining, and dig deep into the cores of how we think. That is the point. Her essays are scholarly and require deep reading (and definite re-reading, as I, for one, am looking forward to).

The speeches on pornography are definite favorites of mine. We all know major murderers have been known to video tape their murders to get off to them. Many of the cruel forms of pornography are not far from this, but our culture has become so woman-hating we cannot see...or do not care.

5 out of 5 stars A Rosetta of Social Constructivist Radical Feminism.......2001-06-15

This eloquent book is a collection of insightful orations given by Ms. MacKinnon during the eighties with in their aggregation is a powerful text on social constructivist Radical Feminism and class analysis. Ms. MacKinnon's approaches provide needed shifts in paradigms away from patriarchy. Gender is understood in terms of the the only meaning it can have in this society: Dominance of one class over another. She provide incredible distinctions and indepth discussions on issues such as Full and Formal Equity, definitions and meaning of rape and pornography.

She has a requisite versing in philosophy as she appeals to provides epistemological shifts needed to question the meaning of difficult constructs such as gender. Being a lawyer, she is facile in illuminating basic assumptive inequities in Juris Prudence. I was most appreciative at her analysis of rape and shifting the definition of rape from penetration to violence and where rape is not an erotic act but one of dominance. She continues further and looks at how members of gendered class male define the sexuality of members of gendered class woman until we do not know what our sexuality really is.

She provides a variety of diverse topics but ties them together by pinpointing their interrelatedness in patriarchy. She skillfully examines issues of the first amendment vs pornography and aptly illustrates how the Bill of Rights is becoming a legal repository for male priviledge.

Ms. MacKinnon's messages are presented in multiple levels and at varying depths and accessibilities, one thing to know is that there is always another level of understanding to be attained from this book. The reader is assured that there is much here if she avails herself to it. Please do not short change yourself by a cursory reading. Ms. MacKinnon departs from Radical Feminist stereotypes in that she develops an experienced level of vulnerability in her speeches and the reader can actually feel the extent that she cares about women.

How fortunate that the paperback is hardy, because it travels with me often.

                                  4 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2000-07-02

How much you appreciate this book depends on what you want to get out of it. It is accessible to a non-academic reader, and although I disagree with her thesis, the speeches are well-argued. She basically thinks that gender *is* domination, and attempts to show that the meaning of woman-ness is in subjection. I think that if you care about feminism, you must at least understand this radical claim. She has definately made me rethink some of my kneejerk assumptions, which after all is the whole point.

                                  1 out of 5 stars Hateful Polemics.......2000-03-22

One of my law professors was a disciple of McKinnon's and recommended this book to me. After reading it I can only conclude that the author seems to be suffering from some serious unresolved conflicts.

McKinnon represents a radical, and in my opinion, unacceptable view of feminism. There are better authors in this field such as Steinem, who presents a more balanced and substantially less radical viewpoint. McKinnon is to feminism as Louis Farrakhan is to Afro culture.

Feminism Unmodified Discourses on Life and Law captures what it is to be an uncompromising and at times defeated radical feminist in the latter 20th century in America. Feminism Unmodified is a compilation of speeches that McKinnon delivered during the 1980's - at a time when "feminism" was fighting with "fuck" for status of the "F-word". The speeches are easy to read, really - to hear, and the arguments are clear and concise. My favorite sound bite: Rape is not illegal, it's regulated.- How True. She seeks to eradicate not gender difference, but gender hierarchy. Anyone want to argue with that? McKinnon is a prophet

4 out of 5 stars An unprecedented resource.......2000-11-09

This is the only volume of the Handbook series I have so far, but based on it I would seriously consider investing money (and bookshelf space) in the entire set. For hummingbirds at least, this is the first modern treatment of all the world's known species, with illustrations and range maps as well as text, plus a detailed overview of current knowledge on biology, behavior, ecology, taxonomy, evolution, etc. Each species is illustrated field guide-style, with good representation of sexes and geographic variation. The species accounts are short but pithy and include conservation status.

The only real areas of concern, again in reference to the hummingbird section, were in the lack of consistency in the plates, sweeping taxonomic revisions, and editorial bias. Most of the plates are wonderful, but a few are so stylized as to scarcely resemble a real hummingbird, much less the one being portrayed (among the owl plates, too, are some exquisite portraits and some that are cartoonish). Some fairly major revisions of taxonomy - including lumping and splitting of species plus generic reassignments - provide food for thought, but many are controversial and may ultimately be rejected by the ornithological community.

More distressing are the expressed and implied prejudices of the section editor. When published observations disagreed with his unsubstantiated opinion on one issue, he repeatedly insisted that these observations must be wrong. As the editor is European, his opinions are no doubt influenced by his limited field experience with hummingbirds, but it is an abuse of editorial privilege (not to mention unscientific) to use such a forum to arrogantly dismiss the findings of one's colleagues. Moreover, among the 18 authors of hummingbird species accounts I found only a single Latino name and none I recognized as belonging to women, though there are many highly qualified and experienced Latin American and/or female researchers in the field. These are idiosyncracies of this particular editor, and I would not expect these issues to rear their ugly heads throughout the series.
