"I never thought I'd see the day that the world would want to hear what two old Negro women have to say," says Bessie Delany. But Bessie and her sister, Sadie, born in 1893 and 1891, saw plenty, by eating a low-fat, high-vegetable diet and outliving the "old Rebby [rebel] boys" who once almost lynched Sadie. This remarkable memoir was a long-running bestseller, spawning a Broadway play and adding to their list of seasoned acquaintances (Marian Anderson, Langston Hughes, Paul Robeson, Cab Calloway) such spring chickens as Hillary Clinton. Born to a former slave whose owners broke the law by teaching him to read, the sisters got a solid education. North Carolina was paradise--despite the Rebbies--until Jim Crow reared its hideous head. The girls had loved to ride in the front of the trolley because the wind in their hair made them feel free, but one day the conductor sadly ordered them to the back. The family moved to New York, where Bessie became the town's second black woman dentist and Sadie the first black woman home-ec teacher. They befriended everyone who was anyone in the Harlem Renaissance (their brother won the 1925 Congressional primary there), pursued careers instead of husbands, and lived peacefully together, despite their differences. Sadie was more peaceable, like Booker T. Washington, while Bessie was a W.E.B. Du Bois-style militant.
They're funny: Bessie notes that blacks must be sharp to get ahead, "But if you're average and white, honey, you can go far. Just look at Dan Quayle. If that boy was colored he'd be washing dishes somewhere." And they are wise: Sadie says, "Life is short, and it's up to you to make it sweet."
Book Description
Warm, feisty, and intelligent, the Delany sisters speak their mind in a book that is at once a vital historical record and a moving portrait of two remarkable women who continued to love, laugh, and embrace life after over a hundred years of living side by side.
Their sharp memories show us the post-Reconstruction South and Booker T. Washington; Harlem's Golden Age and Langston Hughes, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Paul Robeson. Bessie breaks barriers to become a dentist; Sadie quietly integrates the New York City system as a high school teacher. Their extraordinary story makes an important contribution to our nation's heritage--and an indelible impression on our lives.

A Candid Piece of American History.......2007-08-18
The Delany Sisters are simply a spectacular duo of fighters. Their story is one almost every person would find amazing. The way they see this world, and how their past experiences with Jim Crow and being colored in the South before the Civil Rights Movement shaped their perception of humans forever. The book is filled with very warm humor and it is essential to understand part of the complex psyche of 'colored' people in the United States today, which, by the way, is a term prefered by the Sisters over black or even African American to refer to themselves and their people.
The delightful Delany sisters.......2007-06-28
This book was recommended to me by my 95-year-old mother, and I must say it was an excellent recommendation.
Author Amy Hill Hearth must have had numerous conversations with Sadie (age 102) and her "little sister" Bessie (100). The book is written with the words and the spirit of these two special ladies shining through each page. The Delany sisters were born to a father who was a former slave and who got an education and later became the first black bishop in the Episcopal Church. Their mother had white blood, but she chose to marry and socialize among the black race. As the sister explain, if you had one drop of black blood at that time, you were considered a Negro.
The sisters describe their growing-up years and their gratitude for their parents' love, guidance, and the high standards of conduct which they held up to their children. They tell what is was like to be chased by the Ku Klux Klan, discriminated against by teachers and employers, and be the victims of the Jim Crow laws. They mention the illustrious black people, such as Adam Clayton Powell, and Cab Calloway, who were part of their social circle. They tell about their patriotism during WWI and WWII and in one of the most poignant comments in the book Bessie says, "We were good citizens, good Americans! We loved our country, even though it didn't love us back."
This is a look back at American history by two women whose family was prominent in the black community, but mostly unknown in the white world.
It is an eye-opener and is a wonderful story.
The Delany Sisters: Trailblazers.......2007-06-12
Let's just say I fell in love with the sisters so much that I adopted their last name. I am in awe of these remarkable woman, still. After living for more than a century they did not believe they had a story to tell. I am grateful that Amy Hill Hearth was able to convince them otherwise.
Their accomplishments were remarkable not only what the two oldest sisters did but the entire Delany family. Their father Henry was borned into slavery, however, he did not use that as an excuse. All of the Delany children were trailblazers because there were no civil rights for people of color in the early 1900's. They did what they had to do, Bessie was honest and brutal as she felt it was her duty to tell people the truth. Sadie was considered the sweet one, however, she too was a go-getter.
I recommend this book and the two other books that were co-authored by Amy Hill Hearth. Without Ms. Hearth these women and their stories would have never been told, I am thankful to her for bringing them into my life. I expected the sisters to live forever but Bessie died in 1995 shortly after turning 104 and Bessie at 109 in 1999. They are still alive in the hearts of many of us and in the pages of their books.
a terrific book! .......2007-06-01
HAVING OUR SAY: THE DELANY'S FIRST 100 YEARS is simply one of the most engaging, educational and insightful memoirs I have read about two extraordinary women (Bessie and Sadie Delaney) who saw tremendous change and evolution in the world, over the course of (more than) a century. These two fiesty women penned this wonderful book, with an introduction by Amy Hill Hearth, and I remember well how phenomenal it was to see them interviewed together, on PBS, when the book went to press, prior to the release of a made-for-TV-movie version of their memoirs.
This book is great for anyone looking to connect the present with the past; particularly through the eyes of two exceptional women who were born in South Carolina during the mid 1890s, experiencing racism firsthand (as two educated African-American women) and met many individuals who were instrumental in adding art, culture and brilliance to the Harlem Renaissance (a great cultural movement that took place between the 1920s and 1940s, in Harlem, New York, celebrating the cultural achievements of many African-American artists, musicians, dancers, photographers, writers, sculptors and radicals alike). What's more, these two women received college educations at time when it was unusual for Caucasian men to obtain them! Read this and tell two more people to check out the book, when you're through. Great reading!
A Piece of Genuine History.......2007-05-12
This is a real look into the history of a black family from the days of slavery until the present. It gives us personal insight into how life was then, the struggle to overcome poverty, and the closeness of a wonderful family. It's hard to put this one down.

A Must Read for Every American-Black, White, Whatever!.......2007-04-29
Bessie (Annie Elizabeth) and Sadie (Sarah) Delany lived together for over a 100 years. Now at their home in Mount Vernon, New York, they share their stories, recollections, family history, etc. They're outspoken, honest, and candid. Bessie became one of the first African American dentists with a popular practice in Harlem, New York. Sadie became a well-respected teacher. Their family history is not as easy to say but they write and speak it with pride, honesty, and admit that race has been an issue in their lives. They will always call Raleigh, North Carolina home. Their devotion to their mother is quite admirable and loving. Sadie and Bessie loved each other, cared for each other, best of friends, and companions for most of their lives. Neither could imagine to live without the other. The accomplishment of getting to a 100 years old, witnessing America in post-Civil War America, the Great Depression, Two World Wars, the Civil Rights movement, is quite an accomplishment in itself. They lived together at their home with no telephone which they defend their decision. They wait each day for visitors, relatives, friends, etc. Their lives have been incredible in their own way. The book was adapted into a play and later into a television movie. I learned a lot about American history reading this book especially about how the African Americans were treated after the Civil War and after slavery ended. The Delanys had wonderful parents who taught them to be educated and independent. The Delany Sisters never married nor had children of their own but they did lead incredible lives.

Book Description
After the near-suicide mission to the Norwegian fjord, which had claimed so many lives, morale among what was left of 633 Squadron is at its lowest ebb. Unbearable tension, stupid wrangling among the survivors and problems with replacement recruits are tearing the squadron apart. The new Commander, Ian Moor - young, brilliant and determined - knows that the only thing that will pull it together again is the challenge of another vital mission. The Germans are developing a new anti-aircraft rocket, code name Rhine Maiden, which poses the most deadly threat so far to the Allies' invasion plans. So the top brass decide that 633 Squadron should first flatten the rocket factory on a bombing run, and then make a daring strike on an underground target buried deep in a Bavarian valley - in broad daylight...

633 squadron operation rhine maiden.......2000-11-01
For a fan of 633 squadron this is a must buy. This operation comes on the heels of the svartfjord job. The squadron gets a new commander and plenty of replacements. There is tension between the new mob and the old sweats. There is a love interest for harvey and Adams is on the verge of punching two old women. The squadron of course gets an impossible mission, a deep penetration raid in daylight. If they fail it could be the end for the strategic bombing campaign. This is one of those books you will read again and again.

The chosen squadron was no. 633, and their target was a fjord in Norway, where the Germans were known to be developing something so secret that not even the crews of the Mosquitoes which were to fly on the mission could be told about it. Enchanting!.......2007-01-02

A must for Art fans!
Sensational- By Mary Sanders.......2006-04-23
I love fairy things, and I have a huge collection of various fairy things. Including this book, and the Art of Amy Brown I & 2. This is my favorite book of fairy art, and Mrs. Thomas is extremely gifted. Within the pages of this book you will find not only fairies but unicorns and warrior angels as well. For 25 dollars you can't go wrong. This would make a perfect gift for any fairy-tale lover.
A magnificent book.......2005-11-18
Wherein you will find dragons, faeries, warriors, horses, Japanese Anime inspired pieces, sketches, and more. This is the perfect book to sit back and relax to with your favorite drink in hand. Her detail and imagination are awe inspiring.
I have been an admirer of her work for a little over a year, and soon after I picked up my copy of Amy Brown's art book, I secretly hoped that Ms. Nene Thomas would put one out as well. I was not disappointed and purchased a signed copy off her website, [...]. I marvel at it everytime I travel through its pages.
If you enjoy the aforementioned subjects, or you have an appreciation for fantasy art the likes of Amy Brown, Jessica Galbreth, and Ruth Thompson, then treat yourself to this book. You will not be disappointed.
Customer Reviews:
Hmm,.. it's ok..........2006-11-28
The reason this book is ok, is simply because the book is the same as the first one, writing stories, except this one is about drawing basics. I don't really like the character designs, I like the first one better. The good part about this book is that it does however give you pointers on how to draw your manga to give it depth and to give it a good format, so your story is easier to follow. It also gives you a slight run down on some materials you can use. Even though I don't care to much of how the characters look that's narrating through out the book, I do love how the artist drew the illustrations of the examples, and love the example manga pages in the book. Other than that I would recommend getting this book if you're stuck on how to correctly format your manga to give it more depth.
What I was Looking for!.......2006-01-17
Just like the other book they've made, this book is in a manga format. The downside is, they used a different artist. So the artwork isn't so pleasant to my eyes. Other than that, they still follow all the details in how you go about making manga pages. Layouts, sketches, thumbnails, pens, nibs, ink types, and white out techniques and tones!
If you're looking for a book to show you how to draw something specific, this book is NOT what you're looking for.

Hawaiian Leprechauns!.......2006-10-13
This is a lovely story for kids and adults. Join the four menehune named Aka, Peke, Elema and Puluke as they run into a nene (goose) egg and decide that this would be a great meal. Our four friends, however, are out of luck when the egg hatches and a baby nene emerges and adopts Ake as its mother. What are four little menehune to do? I was very fortunate to have stumbled upon this delightful folktale and to see the menehune struggle with situations that are beyond their control. The illustrations are very colorful and truly lovely. This is a great read and would be a wonderful gift to any young (or older) reader.
A fun Hawaiian children's story that I still think about.......1997-12-09
When I was a little girl, my grandparents went to Hawaii. When they returned, they brought me this book as a present, and it soon became my favorite. I would ask for it each night we went to visit my grandparents. As I grew older, I almost forgot about the little men of Hawaii and their goose. Years later, my grandparents' house had to be sold, and this book was one of the few things I took with me to my house. Perhaps someday I will read it to my children....

Customer Reviews:
A quick jaunt through Victorian London.......2007-09-11
This enjoyable effort involves a titled lesbian detective, a prostitute with a heart of gold and Jack the Ripper. It also includes sly references that any Holmesian will relish - "Dr. Ormond Sacker" and "Sherrinford" Pike are central to the plot (Conan Doyle considered both as names for his characters before wisely deciding on Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes).
While I found that the main characters developed feelings for each other far too quickly for believability, I thought that otherwise they were fully dimensional characters with interesting, if slightly convenient, backstories (the noblewoman with the unconsummated marriage, the educated prostitute forced into her profession by her father's suicide). I also appreciated the author's great attention to historical detail - anyone familiar with 19th century literature will find much to enjoy here.
The story's climax is particularly well-written and exciting. However, the author relies on an unfortunate plot device to bring the tale to its climax - one of the protagonists does something so thoughtless and out of character that it actually is jarring.
Despite its minor flaws, I recommend Black By Gaslight. I cared about the characters, the plot moved briskly, the atmosphere was spot-on, and the ending was satisfying.
More than just a mystery novel.......2007-04-08
I read some of the author's online stories before buying this book and are far from being disappointed about my purchase.
Nene Adams created two very interesting characters who lived in a time when society was shaped through strict rules and women didn't get the credit they deserved because they were 'just' women.
The author's description of this time and of the society is very well drafted. I understand that she has done a lot of research about the background and the language of this time.
And on top of it, the plot concerning the mystery is adding another view of the unsolved 'Jack the Ripper' riddle and is brilliant as well.
In fact, this is a story which triggers the reader's interest about the time of this age as much that I bought a map of the old London to be able to see where the two heroines moved around.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which has it all: it's a history, mystery and love story. And the second book in this series already sits on my nightstand to be enjoyed as well.
Book Description
May 1889 - A chance meeting in the Turkish baths leads consulting detective Lady Evangeline St. Claire and her lover, Rhiannon Moore, to a mystery - the murder of a priest and the theft of a painting that proves to be more than a mere work of art. A series of clues left by a long-dead artist puts the pair on the trail of one of history's great lost treasures and the crime that helped topple a monarchy. Travelling to Paris and L'Exposition Universelle, Evangeline and Rhiannon find that matters are not as straightforward as they appear. As they continue to be haunted by a ghost from Evangeline's past, the partners may never recover from the events leading to the revelation of...THE MADONNA OF THE SORROWS.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent continuation of this series.......2007-02-20
I have to say that I was very pleased with this effort. I have read all of the online parts to this series, and this one fits in perfectly. Adams gives a real sense of history and immediacy in this one!
Disappointed.......2007-01-20
I have read all of the on-line stories and the first book in the Gaslight series and I was really looking forward to the second book. With any series that I read, I form a bond with the characters which includes expectations about what they will do or not do and I need to be able to relate to the lead characters to stay interested in the story. In this book, Lina exhibits personality traits and self destructive behaviors that were not consistant with her personality charactaristics in previous books. I stopped reading and went to the end of the book to see where the author was going. The end of the book reminds me of the old "B" thrillers they used to show on the Saturday afternoon movies. Drop somebody off a cliff so the kids would come back the next week to see the next installment. I am sure that a sequel is in the works but I am not interested.

Customer Reviews:
This book should be in every elementary school library.......2007-10-08
This is a book that should be in the library of every elementary school in the United States. The author has done a superb job in adapting many of the famous Mother Goose rhymes to the Hawaiian language. Some examples are:
Ua, ua go away,
Hilo's wet enough today,
And all the tourists want to play!
(ua is the Hawaiian word for rain)
Twinkle, twinkle little hoku
How I wonder all about you
Up above the `aina so high,
Like a kaimana in the sky.
(hoku is the Hawaiian word for star, `aina is the word for land or Earth and kaimana is the word for sky)
Not only will the children enjoy hearing some of the all-time best nursery rhymes, but they will learn some Hawaiian words in the process. It will also be an excellent supplement to any section on the history of Hawaii or the expansion of the United States.
Island-style fun and learning!.......2007-03-17
A truly delightful collection of well-loved and known nursery rhymes with a fun Hawaiian twist. All Hawaiian and Pidgin English words are explained at the bottom of each rhyme, making this book ideal for those teaching or introducing keiki or adults to this wonderful language.
