Book Description

This book tells the story of a professional problem-solving group that for more than 25 years has empowered its members by providing practical and emotional support. The objective of “Group,” as Ellen Daniell and six other members call their bimonthly gatherings, is cooperation in a competitive world. And the objective of Every Other Thursday is to encourage those who feel isolated or stressed in a work or academic setting to consider the benefits of such a group—a group in which everyone is on your side.
Each of the high-achieving individuals in Group (including members of the National Academy of Sciences, a senior scientist at a prestigious research institute, and university professors and administrators) has found the support of the others to be an essential part of her own success. Daniell provides detailed examples of how members help one another navigate career setbacks or other difficulties. She shows that group support, discussion, and application of common experience bring to light practical solutions and broader perspectives. In an inspirational conclusion, the author offers advice and practical guidelines for those who would like to establish a group of their own.

5 out of 5 stars A book for all professionals.......2006-10-14

Let's say you have problems at work. You have an unreasonable deadline. You're up for promotion. Your boss seems intent on attacking you. You are going to have a baby and that's not welcome news at work. You feel excluded from important conversations. No one will go to lunch with you. Ellen Daniell tells us all a great way to handle these work-related emergencies and bad vibes: form a weekly discussion group focused on professional issues.
In addition to providing friendships, now at a premium in this society, the group can say how strategies worked (or didn't work) for them, support the stressed worker, and keep her/him from giving in to the pressures of work. Daniell's own group includes members of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers and professors and industry scientists. Most have been women historically (over the 25 years this group has functioned). She was invited to join by a prominent male molecular biologist 25 years ago. She gives us the history of the group, lots of detailed anecdotes of its functioning, and then turns to how to form and run such a group for your own sanity.
I found this book both inspiring and disquieting: Daniell herself describes how she was denied tenure at a prestigious university, fought the decision, and was denied anyway. Then she became an administrator in the biotech industry, and today she's a full time writer. Her self esteem came through thanks to the group process. But as a woman in science, who took the trouble to read Daniell's pre tenure publications, I am appalled that she was denied. What were they thinking? But don't get the idea that this book is full of rage. That's my own, not Ellen Daniell's. Through her group, she has dealt successfully with the decision and put it behind her comfortably.
I recommend this book very highly; get it for your mental health and well being. I agree with Rita Colwell (former director of the National Science Foundation) who is quoted on the back cover saying that she wished she could have read it back at the start of her career.

Life is tough. Scientist or nonscientist, man or woman, we go up against great odds to make progress, teach and inspire others, and pave the way for the future. So why does the world make this process so hard? In this book, Ellen Daniell describes the support network of young scientists, mostly women, that helped its Bay Area members overcome family troubles, deal with the whims of fate, and face despair in academic and institutional settings. Along the way she describes the psychological approach to success that we can provide for one another. Read this book, and make friends, and be happy that we get this great chance in life!

      5 out of 5 stars A must-read for military personnel seeking a college degree!.......1998-08-24

I searched a long time to find a book about how to complete a college degree while serving in the military. My search ended two months ago when I found this book and after only a few pages I realized that I had hit the jackpot. In addition to being the only book I could find on the subject of a college education for active duty military personnel, this book is outstanding. It is packed full of useful information, advice, tips, and shortcuts. It is, beyond a doubt, the best $12 I have ever spent. If the proof is in the pudding then this book has definately proven itself. Using the information in this book I have already completed the requirements (at an accredited and proven college) for my AA Degree and I am well on my way to completing my BA Degree. This book made all of this possible in just two months. Thanks to this book I have saved both time and money. Best of all, I did it all while on active duty in the Army.

        Book Description

In the Eighth Edition, American Government: Power and Purpose maintains the analytical rigor, focused pedagogy, and judicious use of relevant history that have distinguished it as the authoritative text for American government courses. Retaining the analytical framework that first appeared in the Seventh Edition, the Eighth Edition emphasizes five core "Principles of Politics":

        1. All political behavior has a purpose
        2. All politics is collective action
        3. Institutions matter
        4. Political outcomes are the products of individuals' preferences and institutional procedures
        5. History matters

By drawing on these principles throughout the text, the authors expose students to repeated applications of core ideas in their discussion of political concepts and history. The result is a refined, accessible portrait of America's government institutions and political life that encourages students to think critically and analytically.

5 out of 5 stars WOnderful book about adoption.......2007-08-23

We checked this book out at the library and decided we needed to own it. It is a wonderful book about a goose wanting to be a father and the "green goose" searching for his "real" mother after discovering he looked different. He realizes he has a wonderful father and goes back home. It's great for adopted children.

        5 out of 5 stars Super Book.......2006-03-23

This book is great for all parents of adopted children. This book grabbed the attention of my child, and he was entirely enthused through the whole reading and just absorbed it all. Two thumbs up for this great write!

5 out of 5 stars A lovely, quietly charming book about fatherhood.......2002-05-28

You could hardly do better than to get "The Little Green Goose" for any father, whether adoptive or biological. Adele Sansone's text is a miracle of economy, covering parenthood, adoption, geneaology, and more with a minimum of fuss and text.

The barnyard goose decides that he wants to be a father, but as he has no wife or other partner, he decides to adopt a spooky looking green egg found by the dog at the edge of a field. The goose settles himself on top of the eggs and waits and waits. When the egg finally cracks open, what emerges is some sort of lizard or dinosaur or who knows what--but it definitely is not a goose. Still, Sansone's goose dad utterly ignores the differences between himself and his new son and makes a natural (and skillful) parent. When the "green goose" decides to try to figure out what his real background is, he has little luck and ends up coming home to the goose--who, after all, is the only parent he's ever known.

The illustrations, by Alan Mark, are utterly charming. The "green goose" is splotched and splashed with color, while the goose is drawn sparingly and convincingly. This is, overall, a fun tale with subtle and valuable life lessons.

5 out of 5 stars a story of adoption that did not forget the story!.......2000-05-24

Wonderful book covering so many subjects in a short entertaining time. Father goose longs for a child, and adopts a very strange egg. After the little green goose is born, the baby chicks tease saying thats not really your mommy, you dont look anything alike. The little green goose goes around trying to find out who he looks like and then becomes lonely and returns home, realizing home is where you are loved. Great book for adoptive fathers. Also for those involved in transracial adoption. The story illustrates a fathers love and caring, the idea that families do not need to look alike, and all this is done with a tale that is good for its own sake. The illustrations are superb, my favorite is the final one, this great big green dinosaur-like creature (the little green goose) with the father goose laying on top of his head, one wing stretched out protectively over his child and both fast asleep.

So when her stepcousins Eleanor and Eddy tell her that she can't fly, Georgie doesn't get discouraged -- she just tries harder She feels a peculiar lightness when she leaps from the top of the staircase, and is even more certain of her seemingly impossible ability when she jumps from the porch and soars to the rooftop before landing safely on the ground. 3 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it after I was finished reading. .......2006-07-23

Dichotomy --division into two usually contradictory parts. I struggled with putting pragmatic people and their pragmatic ways (yes, I know, like we adults) in the same plot line with a creative, imaginative little girl -- one who clearly lived in a fantasy world. Walt Disney Fantasia music with pictures would be fun to do with this work. I enjoyed mostly the fantasy part of the book which might mean I still have the child in me.

After finishing up, I liked the story; I agree with another reviewer that this is for older children who can say believing in Santa Claus is in their past.

5 out of 5 stars Loved the book as a child and still do as an adult........2005-11-04

My review of this book probably won't help anyone since it's not an anlytical review, BUT all I can say is I read this book as young child and really, really loved it. I'm much older now and one day, somehow I just remembered this book and I went MAD trying to seek out a copy of the book for purchase at a local Barnes just because I wanted a copy. It is such a great fantasy book, and I remember it brought me to tears at the end. As a child, I identified with the character and easily fell in love with her upon reading it. Nothing pretentious about this book.

2 out of 5 stars boring plot, good charactors.......2004-06-09

I was awfully bored to read about a goose that flys a child across a pond. though the story had a nice idea, it wasn't captured well, it could have been s short simple book. But writing it as a short novel was a mistake. The only thing I enjoyed about this book is the charactors. Langton did an excellent job of making outstanding charactors, as as Uncle Freddy. Besides that, I most certainly don't recommend it.

        4 out of 5 stars I'm Flying!!!.......2003-06-10

        The Fledgling

        Book review by Maddie

I read the book The Fledgling, by Jane Langton. She illustrated and wrote it. The genre is fantasy, which I have much sympathy for. For it may be easy to just make up any old thing out of your head and write it down, but I have learned from writing fantasy books, (because they are my favorite genre) that having a limit of magical powers is important. Because if you say at the beginning of your brilliant story, "There was a guy named Henry. Henry was unpopular. The special thing about Henry was he could fly." Then later in your story you have Henry get stuck in an icky, dirty, dungeon and he can't reach the open window, then you have to change that. Because I bet the readers know or still remember that Henry can easily fly out the window.
This story is about a young girl named Georgie. Georgie thinks she knows how to fly. After finding out she can jump down twelve steps in two graceful bounds she's sure she can fly.
Then one night a Canadian goose appears outside her window. It seems like the bird is telling her, "Come, climb onto my back and I'll teach you how to really fly." It seemed to Georgie that the only thing to do was to climb on his white and black, fluffy and soft, back and have a fascinating adventure flying over the whole town.
She meets the goose every night. She seemed to trust his shiny, black eyes. Soon she's flying all by herself. But there's one problem, this terrible Ralph Preek will do anything to stop her goose from coming. Hunting season is coming up, Ralph Preek gets all hands on his gun... To see what happens next, you'll have to read this amazing, fantastic book!!!
The story takes place in a little town near Walden Pond. The geese are stopping at Walden Pond because that's part of their migration. Georgie lives at No.4o Walden Street.
Georgie is a very creative little girl that is not one of those fancy girls that walks around in a perfectly sewed velvet dress that doesn't have a speck of dirt on it. She's more casual type. She has a little "bush house" that she plays tea party in. The rocks are cups, the leaves make good seats, and the one big rock in the middle is the table.
Eleanor is a happy, determined young girl who never gives up. She cheers Georgie up, and even tries to get Georgie a friend. Eleanor still has her bad times too. She once made a beautiful yellow dress with orange spots on it. She was positive everyone at school would like her new dress!!! When she came home from school, she ripped her dress up and screamed, "A giraffe! I look like a giraffe! Robert Toby called me a giraffe!" (On page 115).
Eddy is a very supportive brother. He always seems to know what to say at the right time. When Georgie put to much frosting on the cake, Eddy says, "You can't have to much frosting on a cake!" (On page 115). Eddy always has a new way to look at things. One time Georgie jumps down the stairs, but she falls. Eddy then explains to her that nobody can fly, but you can leap. Then he shows her how to leap down the stairs.
This book is a very nicely written book. It really has a way to get to you. Like when it says, "and hunting season was over." You get a sigh of relief, because you know, "Yes! Now Ralph Preek can't kill the goose!" but then Ralph sets his watch five minutes slow so hunting season is still going! You become overwhelmed with things to say like, "That's not fair!" or, "That's against the law!" you get extremely intense. I think that shows a good book, because that must be hard to do.
Eleanor reminds me of my sister. Always standing up for me, and never scared to try something new. She can get mad, but she's mostly nice, just like Eleanor.
Georgie reminds me of Stanley, in the beginning of the book Holes. Stanley is unpopular and he doesn't have any friends. Georgie is really unpopular also, and she wouldn't even think of having friends.
Its funny, when I read the sentence "Hard work was something Miss Prawn knew how to do", on page 36, the first think I thought of was my mom and dad. They work their heads off taking impeccable care of me and three other children.
I don't think that you will ever find a book like this one, so if you want a good book to read, pick this one. Don't worry, it has an interesting ending, which is like no other book I've read, so I don't think I can relate to any other book. You'll have to read this supreme book that is definitely worth reading.

2 out of 5 stars TO FLY: FAIRY OR SAINT?.......2003-02-01

Chalk up yet another book in the Kid and Bird category! Eight-year-old Georgie is small and spindly for her age; she looks much younger and even insists that she can fly! Her attempts using the stairs to launch her slender frame into space cause her family (mother, step-father and half siblings) great concern--enough to lead the teenagers to privately form the Georgie Protection Society.

When a flock of migrating Canadian geese takes up temporary residence at Walden Pond, she feels an unexplained but special affinity with an old, single gander.
The proud loner spots her red hair and tries to make friendly contact with one of humankind's most receptive ambassadors. In her own childish mind she names him the Goose Prince.

But other eyes and spying and prying into their private dream world: the snooty new neighbor, Miss Madeline Prawan, who plants plastic roses in her garden! Her boss at the bank, Mr. Ralph Preek, is even worse; he wages an unreasonable but deadly vendetta against the old goose, who is not only harmless, but seems to want to bestow a special gift upon this unqiue child.

Can the GPS foil the cruel intentions of enemies of the Goose Prince? Will this little girl really be able to fly, or is it just a a hallucination: if she has lost touch with reality, how about the adults who savor the hunting season? Can profit be made if she turns out to be some kind of levitating saint? And just what is the unique present which the old goose finds, to later share with his flying companion? A curious fantasy for young readers, who will actually learn something about Henry David Thoreau, who immortalized Concord's Walden Pond.

3 out of 5 stars My response to the title: Why?.......2000-09-10

No, I don't believe that Mother Goose should move over for this book although I would be quite willing to make Mother Goose do international.

The intent of this book - to provide a resource for finger play and action verses - is admirable; as a resource it is well organized, chapters on: familar animals, exotic animals, seasons/holidays, people/places, cooking and eating, home and family, fun and games, color and numbers. The problem is that no author can write 100+ pages of one or two rhymes each and maintain the quality that you can find in the folk tradition or anthologies.

Some of the animal verses seem influenced by Ogden Nash - but I would go the O.N. each time: Example: "A boa constrictor / May look like his sister, / But don't make a fatal mistake: / A boa constrictor / Can look like his sister / And still be a dangerous snake!" [I won't subject my children or grandchildren to this].

On the other hand, I find some rhymes that are quite delightful: "Pierre the Bear! O tell me where / To look for honey trees. / If you don't mind, I'd like to find / The ones without the bees!"

The book can be a useful resource but only as one of several resources.

5 out of 5 stars Connecting to the seasons.......2007-04-06

This would be a terrific book to use in a classroom unit on seasons before the use of calendars, telling the time of year with the signs from nature. Team it up with Thirteen Moons on Turtles Back (Joe Bruchac) and you have a winning combination for grades 1-5.

5 out of 5 stars A thoroughly entertaining, heartfelt picturebook story.......2004-05-19

Imaginatively written by Carolyn Arden and beautifully illusrated by Jim Postier, Goose Moon is the highly recommended thoroughly entertaining, heartfelt picturebook story of a young girl and her adventures on Grandfather's farm over the seasons.

        5 out of 5 stars a warmly reassuring story.......2004-04-26

Goose Moon is a great illustration that warm and comforting literature can still be written for children today. The bond between Grandfather and granddaughter is realistic and the anticipation and wonder felt as one reads the story and takes in the illustrations.

The story and the depiction of it blend beautifully. A true keeper for any child's library.

Rosie is Louie's goose. Rosie goes everywhere with him. To the beach and out for ice cream—wherever Louie goes, Rosie goes, too. But a much-loved goose won't stay new forever. Fortunately, Mom and Dad help to keep Rosie in good shape. One day Rosie gets caught in a wave and swept out to sea. Eventually she washes ashore a bit worse for wear, and even Mom and Dad fear that she will never be the same goose again. But Louie surprises even himself when he finds a way to help his special friend.

A good childrens' book, excellent for reading to pre-school aged children. The text can easily be understood by the 3 and 4 year olds in my library story hour as they identify with Louie and his most favorite stuffed animal, a red goose. The illustrations are great!
