Product Description

"Diary of a Lost Girl" is the facinating autobiography of Kola Boof, the former mistress of Osama Bin Laden. She writes about the hardships of being vaginally circumcised, about witnessing her birth parents killed in her presence as a small child, about slavery and Arabism in Sudan, about being adopted and raised in the U.S. by African Americans. Kola talks candidly about love, her hopes and the future of her sons.

5 out of 5 stars THE NEWEST LIE.......2007-10-15

I'm so sad for Kola Boof.

The "stalkers" who go around posting lies about her book on the internet have invented a new one only this time it's about LA MAISON ARABE, the hotel-restaurant where Kola Boof lived with Osama Bin Laden in 1996.

The stalkers don't know much about the restaurant or its owner Prince Fabrizzio Ruspoli, and they must be related to Peter Bergen, as they're posting more misinformation such as claiming that Kola Boof referred to the estate being a "hotel" back in 1996. SHE DID NOT.

Kola Boof's autobiography states two things--that LaMaison Arabe was being "renovated to become a hotel" in 1996 when she was there and that while she was there--it was a "bed and breakfast" for the elite. Those are factual statements and Prince Fabrizzio Ruspoli himself appears in Ms. Boof's autobiography and has not sued her, but in fact has spoken to the U.S. State Department on her behalf, so once again the San Francisco Tag Team is off the mark.

Kola Boof's autobiography is a CLASSIC. It's full of spirited truth and she tells her truth from the guts as well as the heart.

Haters fail to mention that La Maison Arabe was a restaurant in the 1940's and CLOSED in 1983. It then became a Private Estate providing "Bed and Breakfast" for the guests of Prince Fabrizzio Ruspoli.

Ms. Boof's representation of the hotel is accurate and her autobiography is a gem.

1 out of 5 stars False at its core.......2007-10-13

The most essential element of the Kola Boof story is her claim to have been Osama Bin Laden's mistress. Despite relentless self-promotion, her first three books garnered little notice. It was her 2006 autobiography, with its bizarre portrayal of Bin Laden as a sexual predator who digs the B-52s and lusts for Whitney Houston, that propelled Kola Boof's name into the news and onto tens of thousands of websites. The less-than-discriminating decision last year by editors at Harper's magazine to run excerpts from "Diary of a Lost Girl" triggered a spasm of news coverage in the United States and Europe. Media interest in Boof has all but died out now, but without Osama, she never would have had the ride that peaked with cable-news interviews on Fox and MSNBC.

No one, of course, has been able to interview Bin Ladin to confirm Boof's intimate portrait, and her account of the rest of her life before she launched her Internet career in 2002 is similarly devoid of factual claims that can be verified. In one telling area, however -- the alleged Bin Ladin interlude -- "Diary" is actually quite explicit about real names, places, and dates. That particular information, it turns out, is surprisingly easy to check...and debunk.

Boof sets her months-long encounter with Bin Ladin at La Maison Arabe, a very real luxury hotel in Marrakesh. Boof relates how he installed her at the hotel and lived there with her off and on for months. She names the proprietors, Fabrizio Ruspoli and Philippe Cluzel, as "wonderful, friendly people." When her relationship with Bin Ladin was publicized a year after 9-11, Boof writes, Ruspoli saved her from being stripped of her American citizenship by assuring government officials that Bin Ladin had held her against her will. While she was at La Maison Arabe, Boof writes, the managers would tell other guests she was an American celebrity, and so she would overhear her fellow lodgers mistaking her for Whoopi Goldberg, or alternatively, Naomi Campbell. Her stay at La Maison Arabe ended, she says, when Bin Ladin abruptly kicked her out of their suite in June of 1996.

Those who are intrigued by these specifics might, quite naturally, google La Maison Arabe. And at the hotel's website they would find, on a page dedicated to reviews by the international travel press, that La Maison Arabe did not welcome its first guest until January of 1998.

For those still having trouble deciding what to make of the Kola Boof story, this is a highly relevant point: she states unequivocably in her "autobiography" that Bin Ladin checked her in to La Maison Arabe almost two years before there was any hotel to check in to.

It's not a question of a true story and a misremembered year, either. In early 1998, Bin Ladin was hiding out in Afghanistan and issuing his fatwa against America. At the same time, Boof writes, she was traveling the world as a spy for Sudanese anti-government rebels.

Osama is a double-edged sword for Boof. She succeeded in getting noticed by building her public persona around him, but as simple inquiry reveals, that also makes her story a transparently phony one.

5 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking and Gut-wrenching.......2007-06-03

I never cared much for Kola Boof's story until I stumbled upon the massive details that the media has deliberatley not reported as they've tried to portray this woman, and to a lesser degree Ayan Hirsi Ali, as "crazed agenda-driven reactionaries", "liars" and "nutcases". There's tons of stuff that I've since found on the internet about Kola Boof, but this book is heartbreaking, its gut-wrenching and I have to say that it absolutely rings very true.

In fact, I'm convinced Kola Boof's autobiography is so truthful and honest that "certain people" with their own political agendas simply can't take it, and like so many courageous black women before her, Kola is getting a mixture of stereotypical racist and sexist reactions because the plight calls into question the status of black females worldwide as well as African versus Arab relations and to cap it off she's not a sympathizer of Palestinians (after reading the book you'll understand why) and has supported Israel, which is very unpopular with both liberal white democrats and the Pro-Muslim Black community in America.

As a black woman, I cursed, laughed and cried reading this book. It really meant something to me and I thank Kola Boof for being the bold "mentally unhinged" firebrand that she is. I don't ever review books on AMAZON but I had to review this one. Deserves a 10 plus.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Woman and a Great Book!.......2007-03-31

I hadn't heard of Kola Boof until a few weeks ago, when the news came out that bin Laden had a "thing" for Whitney Houston-- according to his former mistress/sex slave. Always interested in the subject matter of Islamic terrorism, I ordered this book. I am so glad I did, too.

Kola Boof is a wonderful and HONEST writer. This is really one of the most passionate and honest memoirs I have read. She writes of her childhood growing up Muslim in Sudan-- the child of a Sudanese and an Egyptian. She shares her memories of her parents' love and her parents' murder. She shares her pain at being subsequently abandoned by her grandmother. Of the horrors she saw perpetuated by Muslim Arabs.

It's really an incredible book. Kola Boof's story is more of a testament to her life and her life's calling-- which is to educate the public about Islam and Islam's aim for Islamic rule and a return to the Caliphate. The author has seen unbelievable evil including rape, murder, beatings, theft. She talks about the slaves that the Muslims kept (her father was unhappy about this and spoke out-- that's why he was killed). She shares all of this with the reader eloquently and passionately. She will not be silenced.

Kola has denounced Islam and considers herself an African Woman and believes in "the Goddess". She is a feminist. However, because she criticizes Islam, she has been virtually ignored by the press and ignored by the Democratic party, although she is definitely a liberal democrat herself. The author points out the hypocrisy today within the Democratic party and the party's hypocritical tolerance for those who are intolerant of all, while being intolerant of those who just wish to speak the truth, share their stories, and share their information. This book is for EVERYONE, however. Please don't dismiss it because of your political leanings. This book is too important.

Some might find Kola a bit strong. This is her strength, though. She will not be silenced in the face of injustice. Her past could have cowered her, instead it gave her unbelievable strength. She is definitely a woman to be admired and listened to.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful writing.......2007-03-22

I've had this book for maybe about 6 months and I've read it twice already. This is one of those books that you pick up to read and you just CAN'T PUT IT DOWN.

Regardless of what you think of the writer or her views or her politics, what can't be denied is that she is a spectacular writer who keeps your attention. If you agree with her, you'll be yelling "go, girl" at every page. If you disagree with her, you'll be pounding your fist on the table as you read it. That's another beauty of her writing: no matter HOW you feel, her words have you hooked, the way she weaves them together has you not just thinking, but getting EMOTIONAL about it.

All I can say is that I'm really looking forward to more works by this author and I'm really thinking of purchasing her other works as well.

Book Description

PLEASE ORDER AMAZON.COM's 2007 "UNCUT" American edition of this book from Seaburn Books (ISBN: 1592320120).

Kola Boof's long awaited autobiography "Diary of a Lost Girl" is nothing less than magnificent. Many will be spellbound by more than 90 pages detailing her terrifying experience as Osama Bin Laden's former mistress, but the Sudanese-born Novelist/Poet writes even more profoundly about the hardships of being vaginally circumcised, about witnessing her birth parents killed in her presence as a small child, about slavery and Arabism in Sudan, about being adopted and raised in the U.S. by African Americans, about her quest for true love, and in one particularly daring chapter, about her hopes for the future of her sons. Add to that years of psychiatric treatment, a struggle with manic anger and quite a few daring romances other than Bin Laden and you've got the perfect ingredients for a feature film.

Critically acclaimed for her powerful novels "Flesh and the Devil", "Pure Nigger Evil" and the classic short story collection, "Long Train to the Redeeming Sin"...I'm now convinced that there's no way Kola Boof could ever create a fictional character in one of her novels that is more glamorous, sad, enigmatic and intriguing than she herself is in real life.

Throughout the book, Kola speaks in a voice so utterly naked, truthful and unpretentious that it's impossible not to fall in love with her.

"Diary of a Lost Girl" is a powerful autobiography that you won't soon forget.

5 out of 5 stars A NEW CLASSIC.......2006-11-28

According to the publisher, this book sold out because of the recent publicity blitz and nobody has been able to get a copy for months while the publisher is trying to fill orders and reprint the book.

Thank God that I was able to get a used copy, but for anybody who is still looking for this book all I have to say is DONT STOP! It's a true classic.

People talk so much crap about Kola Boof it's a crying shame, they try to make her out to be this crazy black lady who tells lies and makes up stories, but reading this book was like reading the story of my life, my mama's life, my grandma life and hell every black woman's life! This book is for real, it's on point and Osama Bin Laden aint hardly the most facinating and moving subject talked about between the sheets of Kola Boofs incredible life journey.

I would try to explain what the book is about but that's impossible to do. It covers so many strands of a single black woman's powerful message that all I can say is MY SISTAS-----GET THIS BOOK! It's fire. Pure fire.

I give this book a 10! There isn't ENOUGH SPACE for me to write how amazing, BRILLIANT, and BLOODY GREAT this woman is. As a woman, and as an author. NEVER in me wee life have I been soo moved, or stunned as by this woman, and her truths. . By the time I got to the Osama Bin Laden chapter, I totally forgot he was even in it, because the rest of her book is even more amazing. Ol' Bin there, isn't what will sell this book. If Kola ran for President I'd vote for her. SHE"S NOT RACIST! I'm ever soo white, as white as you can bloody well get, and have lived in the Middle east ,, including India, Egypt, Iran, etc... and EVERYTHING this woman says is TRUE!! I, as well as she, are lucky to be bloody well alive. She should be put up on a pedestal, and Cheered. There should be a" Kola Boof "
day. EVERY woman I know, and I perform all over the world soo I know many, well EVERY woman I know , I tell them about this book. I take it with me wherever I go, and this is the 1st book that I've refused to lend to anyone, because I'll NEVER get it back. Everyone would keep it. By the way Kola , I was performing in the Middle east and wasn't allowed to bring your book in. I said I'd get rid of it, meself, soo they wouldn't take it, and I put it under me "Chador." 5 out of 5 stars Valuable History and Insight from an African Woman.......2006-08-05

Kola Boof's autobiography is gripping and breathless. I could not put it down. This book is a wealth of African history, especially about Black people on the Nile River, in Egypt and Sudan. It was really wonderful to read about black women's daily rituals and their continued connections to Queen Nefertiti and other great female rulers. As a black man, I closed this book with a whole new respect for the Black woman in America, not to mention in awe of all that Kola Boof has endured. She could not possibly be as gifted a writer as she is if she had not went through these things. Her beauty is surpassed only by her uncommon wisdom. What a shame that so many hate and despise this Egyptian-Sudanese mother.

1 out of 5 stars Not sure what to make of this book.......2006-08-04

I found this book to be full of grammatical errors, not to mention a constant rambling of how this writer has been helpless about everything in her life. She came to the US at the age of 8, yet continues to refer to herself as an African. If she is an African, where supposedly the women have no control over their destinies as she points out repeatedly in her book, then why in the world did she go to Africa alone? Not quite sure what to make of her. This woman chose to sleep with as many men as she could...oddly enough all rich, powerful men. Again, no chance of finding someone in those countries, who were not willing to finance her ostentacious lifestyle.

I found that this book was full of gory sexual details, which is probably what she hoped would help sell this book in the first place, because other than that this book is about a woman, who's ability to narrate is extremely impaired.

My advice: Don't even bother - total waste of time.

Book Description

With Cold War fears mounting, the M47 and M48 were rushed into production – teething troubles were inevitable. In the decade that followed, however, these tanks proved to be the backbone of US armoured units. In its lifetime, the Patton has played vital roles in three wars, including Vietnam, and has served with more than 25 nations; it has spawned derivatives such as the Armored Vehicle Launched Bridge, an anti-aircraft variant, and has undergone diverse armament modifications. This book provides a comprehensive view of the M47 and M48 Patton tanks, combining technical information with fascinating accounts of the performance, development and deployment of this battle-tested and truly international fighting machine.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent treatment of an important AFV.......2007-05-07

I was very pleasantly surprised by this volume. Steven Zaloga did an excellent job of covering the development and operational performance of both the M47 and the M48 tanks. I was more interested in the M48 Patton tank, since it was used heavily in the India-Pakistani wars, the Arab-Israeli wars of 1967 and 1973, and the Vietnam Conflict. Zaloga does not disappoint in covering how the M48 fared in battle (with the bungled usage by the Pakistani forces, the superb performance in the hands of Israeli forces in the 67/73 conflicts, and the extensive combat performance by the U.S. in Vietnam). The M48A5 fulfilled a critical need in 1973 in replenishing the depleted tank forces in the U.S. as many M60 tanks were shipped over to Israel due to the extensive loss of their tanks in the '73 Arab/Israeli conflict.

As always, Jim Laurier did excellent work in the colored plates.

The only thing I wished Zaloga could have included were the armor penetration tables of the 90mm gun and the 105 mm gun respectively. Other than that, I was very pleased with this book and would highly recommend it to military enthusiasts and tank buffs. For more general info on the combat performance of the M48, you can also check out the book "Armour in the Middle East Conflicts" by Simon Dunstan.

4 out of 5 stars Zaloga And Laurier Do It Again.......2004-02-02

Another fine book by Steven Zaloga and Jim Laurier, an excellent value for the price. The book begins with a brief coverage of M26 and M46 development, although Zaloga's figure of "about 2,400 Pershings were eventually rebuilt to M46 Patton standards by 1951" (p.3) is questionable. Two paragraphs describing the development of the M47 follow, then the M48, then several pages comparing and contrasting these two models. A lot of detail is given on stereoscopic and coincidence rangefinders fitted to these tanks, and the reasons why and how these rangefinders were used are very informative.

The Replacement and Retrofit section describes how even after the last M48A2 tank was built, the Patton continued to evolve. Included are the genesis of the M48A3 diesel conversion, and the M48A4 fitment of old M60 turrets with 105mm main guns which was not pursued. A paragraph and two photos are dedicated to the M48A5 conversion; however, showing the age of the original text, Zaloga wrote of the M247 Sergeant York DIVAD self-propelled anti-aircraft gun system "...the US Army decided to acquire 618 DIVADs to replace the aged M163 Vulcan, entering into service in the mid-1980s" (p.12) without mentioning the fact that this vehicle was cancelled in 1986.

The Operational Employment section makes up the bulk of this book by far. The book features 21 pages of operational use by foreign customers of the M47 and M48 series, including battle narratives and maps of the Indo-Pakistani and Arab-Israeli wars. About three and a half pages cover U.S. Patton deployments, mostly concerning the Vietnam war but including the Lebanon deployment of 1958 and to the Dominican Republic in 1965.

The excellent color plates cover eight pages, with both M47s and M48 series tanks of ten nations. The "centerfold" if you will is the outstandingly well detailed cutaway view of an M48A3 by Jim Laurier. Laurier's cutaways appear in many books of this series.

It is the preponderance of information that rates four stars in this somewhat dated work; the numerous errors and omissions I found would not be an issue for the casual reader. As a matter of fact, there are plenty of photographs of both the M47 and M48 series that will be quite useful for hobbyists, including interior details. As always, I find Steven Zaloga's text a joy to read, and his inclusion of the conversation between the Pakistani brigade commander and his superior especially interesting. I just wish there was more information on American M47 deployments in the early to mid 1950s, and a clarification of when the M48 Patton series was fielded and to which units.

    Book Description

A seminal figure in the field of public management, Mark Moore presents his summation of fifteen years of research, observation, and teaching about what public sector executives should do to improve the performance of public enterprises. Useful for both practicing public executives and those who teach them, this book explicates some of the richest of several hundred cases used at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and illuminates their broader lessons for government managers. Moore addresses four questions that have long bedeviled public administration: What should citizens and their representatives expect and demand from public executives? What sources can public managers consult to learn what is valuable for them to produce? How should public managers cope with inconsistent and fickle political mandates? How can public managers find room to innovate?

Moore's answers respond to the well-understood difficulties of managing public enterprises in modern society by recommending specific, concrete changes in the practices of individual public managers: how they envision what is valuable to produce, how they engage their political overseers, and how they deliver services and fulfill obligations to clients. Following Moore's cases, we witness dilemmas faced by a cross section of public managers--William Ruckelshaus and the Environmental Protection Agency, Jerome Miller and the Department of Youth Services, Miles Mahoney and the Park Plaza Redevelopment Project, David Sencer and the swine flu scare, Lee Brown and the Houston Police Department, Harry Spence and the Boston Housing Authority. Their work, together with Moore's analysis, reveals how public managers can achieve their true goal of producing public value.

5 out of 5 stars Still a key to new ways of thinking for public managers.......2004-01-15

Mark Moore postulates creating public value as a mode of practical reasoning and an alternative way of conceiving of the public policy challenge in relation with the public administrative enterprise. Moore offers a notion of strategic management in government as a way of linking the traditional study of ends in public policy with the traditional study of means in public administration. Moore postulates a strategic triangle, arguing that a useful conception of public value can be envisioned by managers if they integrate (1) substantive judgments of what would be valuable and effective (2) a diagnosis of political expectations (and legal parameters) and (3) hard-headed calculations of what is operationally feasible. The text articulates ways of thinking about and enacting public value in government, considers approaches and techniques for managing upwards toward politics and downwards toward organizational operations in relation to a wide variety of case studies, and concludes with a consideration of what consciousness or temperament is required of public managers if they are to be successful in managing, effectively and democratically.

The text is exceptionally well-written and is equally accessible to undergraduate students, graduate students, and practitioners. It remains a fundamental resource and an invaluable key to new ways of thinking for policy makers and administrators today.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent and comprehensive.......2000-12-12

An excellent overview of the public manager as a creator of value. Moore does an excellent job drawing parellels to the private sector to illustrate how public managers need to address the needs of their consumers by creating value. The only downside of the text is the high level style of the writing, which sometimes makes it difficult to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Strategist and Technician.......1999-12-17

This book is an excellent source for practising public managers and academics and students who interest in public administration. As time passed, people, their representatives and public managers change or need to change their paradigms. Moore indicates the reason why public organizations must change. Organizational posture and position always must be in accordance with external environment. From the perspective of Moore, public managers must move away from the technicians that work to realize the goals imposed by elected officials with the maximum efficiency to the strategists that analyze the environment and find new ways for creating more value for people. This does not mean bureaucrats are completely free and can think and do whatever they desire. We know this situation points to the demolishing of the democracy. But Moore stresses that public officials must be made accountable for the results and all the time they must be oversighted by citizens, representatives, press, interest groups and public at large. This book is not a How-to-do guide. But we can adapt the principles proposed to the unique circumstances of our organizations.

5 out of 5 stars Strategist and Technician.......1999-12-17

This book is an excellent source for practising public managers and academics and students who interest in public administration. As time passed, people, their representatives and public managers change or need to change their paragigms.

This is a waste of a purchase. Rather than a guide to birding locations, it gives directions to the parks and a birdlist. That is about it - no real info at all. For example for Carara NP it says that the river trail is a great place to bird, tells you how much it costs to enter, and to watch out for theives.

If you absolutely nothing about Costa Rica birding, it might be better than nothing. I would say say yourself the money and find a trip report on-line because this book isn't worth it.

I found this site guide to be worth having along on my first birding trip to Costa Rica. The sites are well-chosen for diversity of species likely to be seen and the checklist showing relative abundance of species at the top birding sites is very helpful in eliminating similar species during the identification process.

Rather than the long lists of some possible birds to be seen at each site, I'd have preferred to see some more specific information about locating each site's more important species, a la the Lane birding guides. I felt entirely too much space was devoted to these lists which largely duplicated the info from the checklist.
