Book Description
A t the age of 87, Mike Wallace is a legendary figure in broadcast journalism. Now, after 60 years of reporting on important events around the world, he shares his personal stories about the incredible range of celebrities, newsmakers, criminals, and world leaders who have subjected themselves to his unique brand of questioning. Through Wallaces intimate observations about these figures, we experience afresh the pivotal events that have shaped our world. Here, we meet the guilt-racked Secret Service agent assigned to John F. Kennedys car in Dallas. We learn about the candid moment when President Nixon revealed an unexpected softer side. We witness the underpinnings of the centurys greatest social movement through Wallaces eyes as he manages to earn the trust of major civil rights leaders, and we see the trauma Wallace experienced while covering the conflict in Israel. These off-camera anecdotes and fascinating excerpts from Wallaces interviews with everyone from Eleanor Roosevelt to all the presidents of the last half century, from Frank Lloyd Wright to Johnny Carson, from Margaret Sanger to Malcom Xgive us a new perspective on some of the greatest lives and minds of our time. With a reporters eye for detail, Wallace mingles laughter, tragedy, and revelatory insight in a memoir unlike any other. For anyone whos ever wondered what its like to make history for a living, this is a must-read.
Customer Reviews:
Beyond the image.......2007-02-08
This book provides you with insightful information on personalities who helped shape American politics and society during the past decades. The tension between the interviewer`s attempt to coax new and newsworthy revelations from the interviewed personality and the image which the latter tries to project make for fascinating reading. Great bonus:the DVD enclosed showing Wallace in action. Mike Wallace is a part of the history of political television reporting, he is in fact a part of American history.
Journalism's ugly side .......2006-08-16
Mike Wallace has been engaged in his so- called hard- hitting journalism for years. But anyone who has studied Wallace close-up knows he has engaged repeatedly in some of the most dishonest of all journalist practices. In the late eighties his crew was caught paying Palestinian youths to throw rocks at Israeli soldiers. This provided good film footage. Wallace's most recent interview which is not included in this book is a perfect illustration of the dishonesty in another way. The very same week Wallace interviewed him Ahmadinejad spoke in Iran before a screaming hystircal audience. He ranted against the United States and said how it would fall apart. But his most bitter cursings were for Israel and he repeatedly shouted to his audience , in Hitlerlike fashion 'Death to Israel'
Now switch to the interview. Wallace says Ahmadinejad is personable , does question him about his Holocaust denial, but lets him off relatively easily. There is no mention of proposed genocide, or politicide, only that Ahmadinejad is against the 'Zionists'
Years ago watching Wallace I noticed how insulting and aggressive he could be with those who did not share his political views.
Edward R. Murrow he is not.
Memories of an Astonishing Career.......2006-07-10
Who else can boast such a remarkable career - 60 years of interviewing the most fascinating, influential and interesting people on the planet! Although the behind-the-scenes "revelations" aren't particularly revealing, the book offers an entertaining and interesting look back at the cultural, political and historical changes the world has experienced during the decades of Wallace's reign as the king of interviewers.
The contents are arranged in chapters grouped by the type of person Wallace interviewed: Presidents, First Couples, Race in America, The Middle East, Con Men, and other celebrities. Just about every president, and many other icons and celebrities of public life have sat across from Mike Wallace - some came across looking commendable, some a little worse for the encounter.
The book is supplemented by a CD with brief clips from some of the more fascinating interviews, including Nancy Reagan, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Martin Luther King. Watching Wallace age throughout his career interviewing the powerful and influential is another reminder of the impact he has had and the stories he has brought to us for so many decades. He, and some of his colleagues on 60 Minutes, in many ways has defined the progress of broadcast journalism for decades. The book is as much a history lesson as a tribute to Wallace's career - well worth reading.
Tantalizing but superficial.......2006-06-27
Mike Wallace certainly has some great stories to tell, but beyond the longer section on the Westmoreland and Wigan sagas, there is almost no meat on the bone here, which is disappointing since Wallace really has interviewed many of the most influential people of our times. the accompanying dvd is a great piece of history, but once again, only if you wish to condense history into forty second segments.
3 stars for the book, 5 stars for the DVD.......2006-05-28
That may be because I watched the DVD before I finished the book.
Not a good idea.
Most of the DVD interviews were also featured on his retirement special.

A wonderful first hand account of the Civil War and more.......2006-04-15
Schofield was a professional soldier who served in the Seminole Indian Wars, The US Mexican War, The Civil War and led the army in the postwar years. It is a fun read, not only does Schofield tell a wonderful story he is not shy about criticizing his fellow officers especially the great generals of the Civil War. Unfortunately, the book was written before 1898 so it does not discuss his role in the Spanish American War. It is a must read for any student of the Civil War but the novice will enjoy it also.
Book Description
America 's leading experts on civil liberties sound an alarm about the consequences of the war on terrorism for our freedom at home.
In each generation, for different reasons, America witnesses a tug of war between the instinct to suppress and the instinct for openness. Today, with the perception of a mortal threat from terrorists, the instinct to suppress is in the ascendancy. Part of the reason for this is the trauma that our country experienced on September 11, 2001, and part of the reason is that the people who are in charge of our government are inclined to use the suppression of information as a management strategy.
Rather than waiting ten or fifteen years to point out what's wrong with the current rush to limit civil liberties in the name of "national security," these essays by top thinkers, scholars, journalists, and historians lift the veil on what is happening and why the implications are dangerous and disturbing and ultimately destructive of American values and ideals. Without our even being aware, the judiciary is being undermined, the press is being intimidated, racial profiling is rampant, and our privacy is being invaded. The "war on our freedoms" is just as real as the "war on terror"--and, in the end, just as dangerous.

Joey.......2005-06-09
Well being young and unexperienced I found this book very helpful, it really opened my eyes to a new way of looking at things. I liked the way most of the information seemed to be first hand, rather than just many assumptions.
Checks and Balances.......2004-09-25
Reading this book, comprised of info from many sources, I got frankly angered by the way this administration, as well as others in the past, used tragedies and wars to take our freedoms from us and invade our privacy on a whim. I understand some liberties must be sacrificed in times of conflict. The government just after 9-11 was running straight from the executive branch without any checks and balances. Of course who would dispute or bring up civil liberties in times of crisis, obviously not anyone in the courts. People were labeled enemy combatants and contained without right to trial, any proof of guilt, and held months without anyone even knowing their whereabouts. Many were probably guilty, but some were innocent and in the wrong place at the wrong time. Our government wanted to get people to act as spies, surveying their neighborhoods, spying on neighbors, getting your library to turn you in as a terrorist for reading muslim literature or something containing dissent to the govt. Luckily that brilliant plan of ashcrofts has not gone over to will not be tolerated, and should not be tolerated by the citizens that are supposed to be the backbone of our democracy. Very informative book. AMerica must fight to revise this orwellian act that is the patriot act.
Excellent book for understanding the legal issues.......2003-12-20
I read this book cover-to-cover on a flight from L.A. to New York, and found it both well-written and informative. Indeed, I thought it was such a good survey of the major legal issues in America's war on terrorism that I assigned it as required reading for my American Law & Terrorism seminar at UCLA.
This book provides the "backstory" for many of the key issues I plan to cover, such as prohibition of material support to foreign terrorist organizations and how that law squares with America's First Amendment jurisprudence. For the most part, this book takes a critical position against most of the current legal arguments advanced by the Bush Administration, e.g. that the President should be allowed to designate enemy combatants. But each article presents its argument in a fairly balanced way.
Also, the articles do a great job of explaining the law at a college-graduate level, as opposed to a lawyer's level. That's unusual for most books on the subject, and I think it makes this a must-buy for anyone interested in the subject.
Prescient. Wise. Enlightening. Essential........2003-07-15
In every era of this nation's history, there has been a small minority of wise and prescient thinkers who, unwilling to drift with the popular current, warn us of the forces threatening our basic freedoms. Labeled as agitators, often despised and feared in their own times, these are the people who take seriously the enlightened principles of the American Revolution. They said no to slavery when the rest of the nation was indifferent to it or saying yes; they protested child labor; they demanded the 8-hour day and the minimum wage; they said we must protect our air and water. Their passionate devotion to the ideals of democracy has chopped away at the greed and denial that grows in America like weeds if no one is watching. But whatever the issue, our nasty habit in this country is to ignore the voices of protest. Then we struggle and suffer and people get hurt, very hurt. Eventually the agitators of yesterday become the heroes of the new day. Why can't we learn to listen before the damage is done? This book is a compilation of essays that MUST be listened to. These people are telling us -- with passion, intelligence and good sense, and without greed or agendas and certainly without denial -- about the delicate balance between national security and civil liberties, about the crucial importance of the free trade of ideas, and the danger of popular intolerance of dissent. If we listen now we can prevent that moment for the historians of the future when they say, "How could they not have seen what was about to happen?" As Anthony Lewis says in his essay "Security and Liberty," "If we are to preserve constitutional values - the values of freedom -- understanding and resistance must come now." This book is a MUST READ for everyone who cares deeply about the direction of this nation.
An important book.......2003-07-03
Comprised of a series of scholarly essays on the gradual of secretive reneging of US civil liberties post-9/11, "War on Our Freedoms" is an important book for anyone living in the United States to read. Though some government opacity and reining in of rights is always needed in the wake of an event such as 9/11 or the war in Iraq, this book is a chilling reminder that there is a thin line that we seem to be crossing, unbeknownst to most Americans.
Book Description
Prominent scholars, journalists, historians, and activists detail exactly what the Bush administration has done to undermine American civil liberties.
In 2003, when PublicAffairs and The Century Foundation published an essay collection called The War on Our Freedoms, there was the possibility and the hope that the risks to our liberties would be temporary--a brief era of reaction to already terrible events arising in the wake of 9/11. Today, we understand that the changes set in motion five years ago have broadened as the struggle against terrorism continues.
In this sequel, experts and activists including Alan Brinkley and Joseph Lelyveld, legal scholars Kathleen Sullivan and Stephen Schulhofer, and former government officials John Podesta and Bill Bradley report on the diverse actions, taken in the name of security, that will serve to undermine American liberties, and explain why the consequences of these actions are ultimately counterproductive in preventing future terrorism.
Today, we clearly see a disturbing pattern of undermining the judiciary, intimidating the press, and invading personal privacy. At the same time, government actions have fueled hostility to America in the world at large and in Islamic communities in particular. The terrorists threaten our liberty, but they are not the only ones.
