Book Description

In this moving sequel to her national bestseller A Year by the Sea, Joan Anderson explores the challenges of rebuilding and renewing a marriage with her trademark candor, compassion, and insight.

With A Year by the Sea, Joan Anderson struck a chord in many tens of thousands of readers. Her brave decision to take a year for herself away from her marriage, her frank assessment of herself at midlife, and her openness in sharing her fears as well as her triumphs won her admirers and inspired women across the country to reconsider their options. In this new book, Anderson does for marriage what she did for women at midlife. Using the same very personal approach, she shows us her own rocky path to renewing a marriage gone stale, satisfying the demand from readers and reviewers to learn what comes next.

When Joan and her husband Robin decided to repair and renew their marriage after her eye-opening year of self-discovery, the outcome was far from certain. He had suddenly decided to retire and move to Cape Cod himself and embark on his own journey of midlife reinvention. After the initial shock of incorporating another person back into Joan’s daily life and her treasured cottage, they begin the process of "recycling"–using the original materials of their marriage to create a new partnership. Rereading the letters that she had written from Uganda during the early years of their marriage, she is reminded about the nervousness and joy with which she began their life together. Her sudden incapacitation with a broken ankle reveals an unexpected resourceful and tender side in her husband. A grimly comic and strained dinner party with three other couples reveals to both Joan and Robin some of the emotional pitfalls (and horrors) that can befall married couples.

In her year of solitude by the sea, Anderson learned that "there is no greater calling than to make a new creation out of the old self." In An Unfinished Marriage, she charts the new journey that she and her husband have begun together, seasoned by their years of marriage but newly awakened to the possibilities of their future together. A unique, tremendously moving and insightful entry into the literature of marriage, it will provide salutary shocks of recognition and fresh hope for all women and men negotiating their own marital passages.

5 out of 5 stars Marriage Re-Entry; It Hits Home........2007-09-18

I think every married woman should read this and Joan's previous book 'A Year By The Sea.' I read this several years ago and could easily identify with it then. I just reread it and being a little older and even deeper into my marriage, it just hits home. I have read this off and on for the past week and have found consolation from my own marriage woes and commraderie in knowing that I'm definately not alone in working through certain stages and feelings of marriage. Makes me feel even stronger really for working through the muck and mire instead of throwing in the towel which can be a mighty tempting and attractive option depending where you are.

The memoir picks up where 'A year By the Sea' left off. They are re-entering their marriage. The book reads kind of like a journal, or maybe a personal conversation with a close friend. The chapters are divided by months and seasons of the year. I love the detail and open honesty of it. I like that she not only talks about her marriage, but the changes she and Robin are experiencing as parents while they watch their son transition into his own family.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and moving.......2007-01-18

A sequel to "A Year by the Sea", this book follows Joan Anderson's journey as she and her husband reunite after she spent a year alone at her family's cottage by the sea. I did not quite know what to expect from the book, as frankly, I loved her first book so much, I really didn't want him to come back! Joan is brutally honest with the reader about her feelings as she deals with her struggles of his return, feelings to which I think many women can relate as we deal with the men who come in and out of our lives. Joan's candidness creates a common bond that makes you cheer for her in the good times and cry with her in the bad. This is another great book that speaks to women of all ages as we navigate life's journeys. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars I loved it.......2006-10-31

There are so many things that the author describes in this book that everyone can relate to at one time or another in their life. She expressed on paper what most of us are thinking when in a relationship but never say. I thought the book was thought provoking and empowering. A delightful read and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars I'm cracking up...........2005-09-13

....reading all the reviews from women who didn't like the book because Joan did something "so selfish" and that a man needs a woman who "adores him and deserves nothing less" - clearly this is not the view of my own successful marriage or those of my younger friends. (I am 34). I was so enthralled with a Year by the Sea that I went to the Cape from MN to personally meet the author and I assure you she is no different than how she writes -straightforward, tells it how it is, very, very intelligent woman who went to Yale. I have also had the pleasure of meeting her husband who is as charming. (Most people think this about my husband as well but I know there are a few flaws). If you are in the backwards land of living to solely "adore" your husband you have no business reading this book or any like it. It simply wouldn't be your cup of tea as a book on "pleasing your man" wouldn't be mine. Thank goodness we are all in America and can have those choices. Mine is to keep reading any and everything this woman has written. Please don't bother rating my review - you have better things to do! :)

3 out of 5 stars Tales of An Unconventional Unwise Woman........2005-09-13

She was not just an "unconventional" woman, she was a completely selfish and crazy wife to just go off that way after thirty years of marital strive. Why didn't she just get a divorce? Claiming she had neglected herself while raising four children, how self indulgent can a woman get; like a warrior, she went into "retreat" to regenerate herself. No one can do that!

She feels that "true learning comes from our own impulses" -- please! When will this person grow up? This book is her sequel. "Every beginning is always a sequel, after all, and the book of events is always open halfway through." If her marriage was so bad that she had to go to sea for a year, I wonder what Robin did while she was gone. He'd be a fool to languish in his new job, wondering where he had gone wrong; could be she was the person responsible for all the mess. She was like a peregrine falcon who scavenges off others or perhaps a green-winged teal, called a wigeon. She was not a normal woman, not forgiving and understanding. A man goes where his job is. Christine refused to follow Jeff to his job until she got pregnant. Joan was too old for that ploy.

To her, it was an "eye-opening year of self-discovery" which would have been fine thirty years earlier before she committed herself to marriage. Women (nor men) don't just run away during a midlife crisis. So Robin moves back in with her in the Cape Cod cottage so as not to be alone with his midlife reinvention. Haven't these people ever heard of marriage counselors or therapists to work out the problems where they are, not where they'd like to be. If we all just up and moved when we were peeved with the person we chose to live with, through good times and bad, this world would be in total chaos and confusion.

She calls it a new "partnership." That's the modern way of marriage these days, but this woman is almost my age -- this was not the accepted thing to do, and still should not be adapted as normal. I know a couple who have been married much longer than she and live in two parts of the country, she in an antebellum home near Alabama while he is making the money to redo her "dream" out in L. A. She laughingly joked that they kept the airlines in business, as he was always flying "home" not she going to him. When she had cancer, he was there to support her and to rescue her from boring people at the library open houses. She was not a good wife, and proved to be a not-so-good mother as the younger daughter came down with a serious illness after she went off to college. God punishes those who disobey his Ten Commandments.

In Cape Cod, Joan and Robin learn first hand the "emotional pitfalls and horrors" that can befall married couples. It affects all of us at one point or another but it does not give the wife full authority to just go off and abandon her home for whatever selfish reason. For the first time, I am hoping the husband of such an self-indulgent "queen" of a wife finds a new love with a younger woman. It will serve her right.

    Book Description

Leading experts reflect on the changing nature of work and family life.

While many aspects of work have changed dramatically over the last few decades, society has struggled to adapt, to the detriment of working families. Work schedules and demands continue to reflect a time when at least one parent stayed home, women remain underpaid relative to men on average, and public schools still base their hours on an agrarian calendar.

Unfinished Work provides insights into why we have not yet seen an effective national response to the challenges faced by most working families in America today, and offers solutions from leading thinkers in the field across the disciplines of political science, sociology, economics, history, and public policy.

                Book Description

Warfare dominated the long reign of the `Sun-king', Louis XIV. For forty years from 1672, France was continuously at war and had one of the largest armies seen in the West since the fall of imperial Rome. The campaigns secured little territory, but almost bankrupted the country and the consequences for the French monarchy were dramatic - contributing to its eventual downfall. John Lynn examines the wars for evidence of a coherent strategic policy; he explores the operational logistics of the campaigns; and considers their significance for France's diplomatic, political, mililtary, administrative and institutional

This is the first modern, comprehensive study in any language, and offers a vivid insight into 17th and 18th century statesmanship and warfare - reaching a climax with the defeat of France by Marlborough at Blenheim.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre and partisan.......2004-03-12

No doubt a work in English on the wars of Louis XIV from the point of view of the French is a good thing. And no doubt something to correct the Marlborough-and-Eugene worship evident in previous accounts is called for. But it does no good simply to assert that Louis' victories were greater, and defeats lesser, than others have said. Some standard of comparison is necessary for consistent judgement, and is missing here. The exposition is generally competent, though unexciting; insights are not very deep. The period still awaits a good treatment.

4 out of 5 stars Fifty Years of War.......2002-08-22

Louis XIV engaged in nearly constant warfare from 1664 to 1714. His wars covered the face of Europe from Ireland to Italy. The great commanders of the Age, Marlborough, Vauban, Turenne, Conde, Luxembourg and Eugene all crossed the stage of Louis' many wars. This is a lot of history to compress into one volume.

John Lynn does an admirable job of surveying the different wars and keeping track of all the campaigns that shaped these wars. He writes clearly and economically. One finishes the book having a better understanding of Louis' grand strategic vision.
This is not a book for someone wanting to learn more about the great commanders of the Age or the details of specific campaigns or battles. This is a book about war, writ large.

In my opinion, the value of this book for the general reading public of military history is that it places the accomplishments of Frederick the Great and later Napoleon into a better context. To understand why they were such revolutionaries, it is important to place them in contrast to an era where war was seen as process and the decisive moment did not exist.

                4 out of 5 stars War-as-process.......2002-02-12

Since the wars of Louis XIV have not been covered comprehensively in English, this volume by a renowned historian is particularly welcome. In this work, John Lynn combines a succinct, but thorough blow-by-blow narrative account of the wars fought by Louis XIV with a cogent historical analysis that places these conflicts in their proper perspective. Lynn's main hypothesis differs from some other historians who view Louis XIV as a would-be European conqueror intent on endless wars of conquest. Rather, Lynn regards Louis' wars as essentially defensive after achieving limited territorial gains in Holland after 1675. Lynn explains these conflicts as wars-as-process that rather than seeking to annihilate enemy armies or achieve decisive victories, sought lesser objectives like extorting taxes from occupied lands, deciding dynastic issues or achieving defensible borders for France. Inevitably Louis XIV sought short wars against isolated opponents, but the indecisive nature of 18th Century conflict led to protracted, attritional struggles against coalitions.

The Wars of Louis XIV consists of eight chapters, beginning with a background chapter on European conflict in 1495-1661. Two other excellent opening chapters cover French strategic concepts in this period as well as the strength and methods of the French army and navy. The next two chapters cover the relatively painless War of Devolution and the Dutch War, which were fought to achieve martial Gloire for Louis after he came to the throne. At relatively low cost, Louis added to his territory and seemed to confirm the use of violence as a useful tool of statecraft. The fifth chapter covers violence and state policy, specifically the so-called "reunions" which were coercive annexations of adjacent territory similar to Hitler's "Anschluss" with Austria, and violent suppression of the Protestant minority in France. The sixth and seventh chapters - which comprise nearly half the book - cover the fateful Nine Years War and the War of the Spanish Succession. Although France did well militarily in the first conflict, it was financially exhausting to fight protracted attritional struggles against coalitions. In the last war, fought for dynastic reasons, the French did fairly well until Marlborough showed up in 1704. Marlborough changed the slow operational tempo - typically one big siege attempted per season - and sought to fight big battles. He smashed the French at Blenheim and Ramillies, and succeeded in rolling back most of Louis' gains over the past 20 years. Nevertheless, Louis outlasted his enemies and eventually managed to achieve a favorable peace. The final chapter consists of an analysis of all of Louis' wars and attempts to place them in proper historical perspective.

Overall, this work is excellent - it is well-written, well-researched and provides fresh insight into a long-neglected subject. Students of Napoleonic warfare would be well-advised to read this book as background on the development of French doctrine (particularly a preference for fortifications) and strategy in pre-Revolutionary France. The chapters that cover the wars are sub-divided into sections on each year, which are cover the different fronts sequentially. The only flaw is this volume is the lack of decent maps; many important towns mentioned in the text are not depicted in the simple sketch maps nor are the movement of armies depicted. Nor is there a map of the Spanish theater of war, which was particularly important in the last two wars. It is particularly difficult to follow gains and losses of towns in the main battle front of Flanders, and the author should have provided at least a summary map to depict major territorial changes in each war. Readers should keep a good atlas handy in order to follow the campaigns.

Although France was able to achieve some strategic gains in these wars of Louis XIV, the main military legacy of the Sun King was near financial bankruptcy. John Lynn concludes, "for fifty years, French armies had been strong enough to stand against coalitions of all the other great powers. But the treaties of Utrecht, Rastatt, and Baden marked a watershed in international relations. No longer could France maintain its former dominance. This reality reflected not only the relative decline of France, but the increased power of other European states."

                4 out of 5 stars L'etat est moi.......2001-09-19

Measured simply by the length of the conflicts, Louis XIV was the most war-like French leader of all time, easily eclipsing Napoleon. He was also more successful, if you go by the "Frederick of Prussia" test - compare the map of his country before he came to power with the map after he left, and you will see lasting expansion and consolidation. The world of Louis takes us to the crises of the Fronde, the Wars of Devolution, the Nine Years War, and the War of Spanish Succession, and treats us to the genius of Turenne and Conde. It's now fashionable to write off the pre-Napoleonic period of military history, based as it was on "positional warfare" and long sieges, but Lynn is good enough to buck the trend - and thankfully so, for modern readers would never have come across the genius of Vauban, Louis's veteran engineer and probably the greatest general of the era. This would have received five stars, but loses one for prose style. But - on the plus side - the history is impeccable, the coverage is thorough and the maps are superb.

                5 out of 5 stars Very good.......1999-11-18

This is an incredible book for those willing to tackle the subject. Granted, there aren't too many people interested in the matter, but for those doing serious research or just filling in the blank spots in one's understanding of history this book will be the Quran and the Bible.

                Book Description

Campaigns fought by Louis XIV, the Sun King, shaped the borders of European states, the destinies of royal dynasties, and even the patterns of absolutist government. This book presents the most authoritative yet accessible and succinct account of these all-important struggles available today, covering every aspect of the wars from decisions made by the king at his palace at Versailles to the life of the troops encamped in the field. Focusing on the French army, the greatest military force of the age, this tale of violence, victory, and victims balances siege and battle in a way that tells us much that is new about the Sun King and his adversaries.

Another reviewer said that John Lynn's research is impeccable, that may be but the proof-reader for this book was second rate.
                on page 16
"...Louis XIV now enjoyed the upper hand and squared off against the Spanish and eventually, their Australian cousins."

In case you haven't picked it, he meant to say 'Austrian' not 'Australian'.

Other formatting problems occur, such as a map for the Battle of Blenheim on p26 nowhere near the narrative for that battle.

A picture of Louvois on p29 has this caption
"An engraving by Hainzelman c. the mid-1680s. Louvois, the imperious war minister of Louis XIV, reached the zenith of his powers in the 1680s, as he appears in this engraving by Hainzelman. Louvois's ample flesh belies his hard-handed and brutal policies'.

They've stated twice it's an engraving by Hainzelman. Two pages later is another depiction of the same Louvois, again described as "the imperious war minister of Louis XIV." The only difference being the latter is a portrait. There's simply no reason to have near back to back pictures that shed no new light on the subject.

4 out of 5 stars War as Process, the Short Version.......2002-10-04

The French Wars is essentially a condensed and summarized version of Professor John Lynn's earlier work, The Wars of Louis XIV. As usual, Lynn's writing and research are impeccable and this volume is a fine short history of its subject.

After short sections covering the background to Louis' wars, Lynn addresses the various opposing sides in a 15-page section that concludes with his "war-as-process" depiction of 17th Century warfare. A four-page section on the outbreak of the war is odd because it covers the initiation of all five of Louis' wars in one felt swoop; this section makes little sense as a stand-alone summary and should have been inserted into the campaign narrative. The actual summary of the five wars is 35 pages long. Of particular interest is French atrocities along the Rhine River Valley: the mortar bombardment of Koblenz in 1688 being analogous to modern-day bomber attacks, and the scorched earth tactics used to devastate the Palatinate in 1688. For those readers who believe that the Germans are the sole perpetrators of political violence in Europe, these incidents - with Germans as victims - may seek to illuminate where some of the roots of later German militarism. Another interesting point that Lynn makes is the value of defensive fortifications in the 17th Century; both forts and defensive lines were expensive but acted to control the tempo of warfare. The final sections cover the portrait of a soldier (which focuses on a woman serving in disguise), a short section on the nature of predatory armies, portrait of a civilian, and a section on how the wars ended ("peace by exhaustion").

There are a total of nine maps in this volume: Europe in 1661, the Rhineland, the Battles of Blenheim, Fleurus, Ramillies, Malplaquet, Provençe and Northern Italy, Turenne's campaigns of 1674-1675, and the Spanish Low Countries. Actually, the maps are the only disappointment in this volume, and they reflect the same weakness as in Lynn's larger work on the subject. Other than the one map of Turenne's campaign, the large-scale maps do not reflect specific campaigns or wars, so it is difficult for the reader to appreciate the specific operations in each of the five wars. Nor are there any maps that depict territorial acquisitions or losses as a result of the wars.

Lynn's conclusions about the wars of Louis XIV are interesting. First, he states that, "the relative power of France decreased as a consequence of Louis' wars.." but that, "Louis' war-as-process achieved lasting gains." Louis "operated within the international system of his day, respecting its methods and moderation." Lynn contrasts the wars of Louis XIV with Napoleon, who viewed war as an event and who disregarded international norms. However the greatest consequence of the wars of Louis XIV was the fatal damage done to French state finances; Louis refused to reform a tax system that endowed the nobility and clergy with exemptions and instead relied on ruinous short-term loans. Ultimately, Louis' wars bankrupted France for generations and his successors faced the same problem whenever they opted to use war as a solution to international problems.
