Barefoot: Escape on the Underground Railroad
ASIN: 0590442120 |
Book Description
Born a slave on a Maryland plantation, Harriet Tubman dreamed of following the North Star to freedom. When she did escape, she risked her life many times to lead 300 slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad. This is the dramatic biography of a woman whose faith, courage, and intelligence have carved her a place in history.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best children's biographies I've found!.......2007-10-08
My 3rd grader likes fantasy and adventure, but I've been adding some non-fiction books to his reading list. I didn't know if Harriet Tubman would interest him, I wanted him to learn about her, so I gave this one a try.
It's WONDERFUL! It kept his attention and made him really care about what would happen to her. An adult could tell the author had done a great deal of research. There were direct quotes from Harriet herself and from what I could tell, every event in the book really happened.
The book was so good that after reading it with my boy I ened up telling my wife about most of the amazing events it chronicled.
Does your child have reading required for school each week? Get this one!
"Wanted Dead or Alive".......2006-04-24
"Wanted Dead or Alive" The True Story of Harriet Tubman is a facinating book and may prove useful in a classroom setting. Ann McGovern's writing style is a mixture of narritive and expository and makes the book both engaging and educational. "Wanted Dead or Alive" is comprehensive and covers Harriet Tubman's entire life and her contributions to the Underground Railroad.
Follow the North Star to freedom!.......2004-02-23
I had this book when I was a child and I treasured it. This book introduced me to the life of Harriet Tubman, conductor on the underground railroad (she was so successful at helping people escape slavery that she had a price on her head), Civil War spy (an extremely dangerous undertaking when you consider that captured spies were executed), and servant to the poor. She instantly became my hero. The book is instructive without being preachy, and gave me a sense of Harriet Tubman's incredible strength of character, determination, and courage. In the pages of this book, I found a Great American. She has been a role model for me ever since I read this book. Consider giving this book as a gift to a child you love. The writing is easy to read, the illustrations are gripping, and the main character is a bona fide, real life, honest-to-goodness hero.
One of the Best Children's Books of All Time.......2003-02-18
I don't remember why I first picked this book up, but once I did, I couldn't put it down. I introduced the book to my teacher, and he became so interested in it that he read it to the class. The next time the class went to the school library, they borrowed all the copies of this book - 10 copies in all.
The author has a way of making the reader feel like he or she is in the story - if not as Harriet Tubman, then as someone close to her.
With all the junk being fed to kids nowadays, putting a book of this quality in front of them could pique their interest in reading.
Wanted dead or alive.......2002-05-10
It was in the year 1820. A babygirl was born. Her name was Harriet Tubman. She was born in Maryland. She was born in a cabin. The book is about slaves that are negros. And that they all lived in Maryland because there slaves. All the slaves were mistreated. The slaves needed freedom.
The message is that you you should help other people that need your help. You should never give up on what you want. Like the slaves wanting to be free.
My opinion, it was cool because the slaves were given called diffrent names. When they were older they were given another name. My opinion is that it is not good to have slaves. It was a good book.

Standard Catalog Of Military Firearms: The Collector's Price & Reference Guide
ASIN: 0873497856 |
Book Description
This fantastic all-color reference provides engaging insights into the main infantry weapons of the five largest protagonists of World War II - Germany, Japan, Russia, the United States, and Great Britain, with particular attention paid to the actual roles these weapons played in battlefield combat encounters. Comparing axis to allies - who had the upper hand, the fair (or unfair) advantage - author jan Suermondt examines the physical details (and provides current collector values) of over 150 small arms, including revolvers, pistols, rifles, submachine guns, machine guns, mortars, grenades, and mines.
You'll be introduced to the types of weapons used during the war; how five years of war saw the needs and types of weaons change; as well as the technological advances during the period (paying particular atention to antitank weapons). More than 500 photographs, including actual war images, present a masterful visual iconography of some of the most important weapons carried into combat - the U.S. Army's BAR, the British Ben, the German Schmeisser, and the Russian Degtaryev DP/DPM.
Customer Reviews:
Not his best work.......2006-04-21
Hard for me to dislike any book that reflects the tools and images fo the Great Wars.
However I have to say that this book simply trys to woo the reader with its color pictures.
Certainly not its detail or length of information.
John Walter has abook Military Rifles of Two world Wars which is far superior to this one in details even if limited to rifles only.
Granted, Sudermondt does include machineguns motarsand antitank weapons,I guess I just got sore a tthe way he categorized some weapons like Mausers.
Infantry Weapons of WWII.......2006-02-23
Good pictures, but very disorganized. Seems like they hurried to get it published. Several guns were in the wrong category, wording was sketchy at best. Doesn't look like anybody proofed it before it went to publication.
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.......2004-10-08
Ok, i purchased this book because from what it looked liked, it was gonna be good. Wow, was i wrong! First off, I decided to just thumb through it and check out some of the photos. Well, there are mislabled photos through out the book. They have a PPsH ejector port on the Thompson page. They have a Colt on the webley page. Kinda irk'ed me but i decided to start reading it. Several mistakes on the weapons. And the so called "current collectors values" is a JOKE. If the guns were actually worth as much as the author has them listed, I'd have a majority of them. But i don't cause almost ALL OF THEM ARE UNDER PRICED. He also has a 1918 Browning Automatic Rifle listed under rifles, but in all actuallity, it's a machine gun. I collect World War 2 weapons and this book is the biggest dissappointment of all the books that I have on the subject. I highly DO NOT RECOMMEND. Find something else rather than waste your money on this.

Book Description
The voices in this book belong to legislators, local officials, doctors and engineers, educators and intellectuals, lawyers and social workers, owners of small businesses, translators, and community activists. They are also all Muslims, who have decided to become engaged in political and civic organizations. And for that reason, they constantly have to explain themselves, mostly in order to say who they are not. They are not fundamentalists, not terrorists, and most do not support the introduction of Islamic religious law in Europe - especially not its application to Christians. This book is about who these people are, and what they want. This book is based on three hundred interviews with European Muslim leaders from six European countries: Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Great Britain, France, and Germany. The question of Islam in Europe is not a matter of global war and peace but raises difficult questions about the positions of Christianity and Islam in public life, and about European identities. There is not one Muslim position on how Islam should develop in Europe but many views, and most Muslims are rather looking for ways to build institutions that will allow European Muslims to practice their religion in a way that is compatible with social integration.

Important "translation" .......2006-01-09
Europe is facing a quickly growing muslim minority. How democracy and this minority will cope is a question with historical and worldwide implications. But the responsibility for that is not yet widely acknowledged. And until now, the book market wasn't a help that often.
How many books and articles have been written about muslims and their building political elites in europe on the basis of historical or political speculation? I think, too many. For a long time I longed for one that was a) based on sound political sciences instead of wishful thinking (pro or contra Islam) and b) helpful in practical questions.
Jytte Klausen (from the Center for European Studies, Brandeis University, Boston) did it! Herself from Danish origin, she did the nearest thing: not just reading and surmising, but traveling time and again to the different European countries, staying for some time in the larger ones, speaking with competent muslims and non-muslims alike (in mosques and families as well as in universities and parliaments) and flanking all that with empirical questionaires and interviews.
In reading, you learn about the emergence of the new "muslim elite" in Europe, chances as well as hindrances and dangers - and all that in a comprehensive and comparative perspective, which has apparently grown and won through the workplaces in the US and different European countries.
And the fifth Amazon-star goes for style. The book is not just sound and interesting, but also good to read - you kind of join the travels and interviews, and you enjoy it. A must-read for people who see the european and global demographic and democratic challenges!

This is the one to buy.......2007-08-25
There is a pretty limited selection when it comes to birding sound cds. This is a good choice because each bird is given about 30 seconds of calls. I placed the entire cd into my iTunes library, then downloaded them into my iPod for field use. Really, calls and songs are the only sure way to identify birds when the bird could be one of several that look alike. (as most do).
Excellent guide to bird sounds.......2007-08-06
The only critique I have is that some of the western birds are not in this guide. They are in the eastern guide. You actually need them both. I highly recommend this set of guides.
Birdjam Use.......2007-03-21
We needed this CD to work with the iPod BirdJam program we have...it works perfectly.
Most thorough........2007-01-11
I purchased both sets of these. I bought them to use with the new birdpod software. That combo (ipod / Birdpod / Stokes) is a great new birding tool. Nonetheless, this set seems to cover more species than anyone else. And that's what I was lookong for. For the most part sound quality is great.
Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs: Western Region.......2006-07-17
I like the selection of songs that are avaliable. They are well recorded and there duration is fine.
I don't much care for the way that some of the tracks are put together with each other. Example: Track 32, a, b & c. You have to go through the preceding tracks on that paticular one to get the one you want. It would be easier to use if each one had it's own. Just track 32,33,34 etc.

ASIN: 0395975190
Release Date: 1992-01-01 |
Book Description
Here is the western edition of A Field Guide to Bird Songs, the best-selling bird song collection ever recorded. This edition includes the songs and calls of 522 species -- all the most common and vocal birds found in western North America. Organized as a companion to Roger Tory Peterson's Field Guide to Western Birds, this is the "birder's bible" of bird song.
Customer Reviews:
A major disapointment!.......2001-03-21
While most people expect wonderful things from Peterson guides, this CD set is sure to let you down.
It's is very limited in the number of birds it covers. And the recordings for each bird are minimal at best.
Not portable-CD-player friendly.......1999-05-27
I own the 1992 edition, which has been very useful. The latest edition is the '92 edition repackaged; the contents are the same. I confirmed this with the publisher. The price has dropped merely because the packaging is cheaper to produce; that's according to their editorial staff.
If you wish to use the Peterson CDs "in the field" with a portable CD player, or if you use it frequently at home, there is something you should know:
Peterson organizes the songs into two CDs, each with about 50 tracks. Each track contains from 2 to 8 birds. If you want to hear a specific bird without hearing others, you can go directly to that bird if your CD player has the INDEX function. An index is like a subtrack.
Herein lies the problem; most portable CD players no longer have the INDEX feature. It was phased out years ago. Thus, you have to listen to all the birds of a track to hear the one you want, and as you get better at birding this becomes tedious.
It should be mentioned that most CD players do have a "search" function which allows you to "fast forward" through a track. But this is awkward to use.
Some makers of bird song collections on CD (e.g. Stokes, new out in May 99) have learned of this problem and have corrected it by recording one bird per track. Stokes also seems to have clearer and longer recordings. However, this format means that the full collection requires 4 CDs. Thus, using Stokes in the field has its own problems.
If you can find a portable CD player with the INDEX function, the Peterson CD works well, especially the Eastern Birds, which is one-volume. I can just plop my portable CD player into the pocket of my field vest, and any time I want to confirm a warbler species I can cue up that bird in an instant. I can quickly INDEX through the birds calls and compare. Peterson gives the bird label and the bird song separate indexes, so you don't have to listen to the announcer naming all the birds. But unless CD player makers change their minds, this convenience may die when my '89 Sony portable does.

Book Description
Is birdsong music? The most frequent answer to this question in the Middle Ages was resoundingly "no." In Sung Birds, Elizabeth Eva Leach traces postmedieval uses of birdsong within Western musical culture. She first explains why such melodious sound was not music for medieval thinkers and then goes on to consider the ontology of music, the significance of comparisons between singers and birds, and the relationship between art and nature as enacted by the musical performance of late-medieval poetry. If birdsong was not music, how should we interpret the musical depiction of birdsong in human music-making? What does it tell us about the singers, their listeners, and the moral status of secular polyphony? Why was it the fourteenth century that saw the beginnings of this practice, continued to this day in the music of Messiaen and others?
Leach explores medieval arguments about song, language, and rationality whose basic terms survive undiminished into the present. She considers not only lyrics that have their singers voice the songs or speech of birds but also those that represent other natural, nonmusical, sounds such as human cries or the barks of dogs. The dangerous sweetness of birdsong was invoked in discussions of musical ethics, which, because of the potential slippage between irrational beast and less rational woman in comparisons with rational human masculinity, depict women's singing as less than fully human. Leach's argument comes full circle with the advent of sound recording. This technological revolution-like its medieval equivalent, the invention of the music book-once again made the relationship between music and nature an acute preoccupation of Western culture.

Ever wonder what that trill in the backyard is? Or how to distinguish between all those similar warbler songs? If so, try Birding by Ear. This great resource for birders all over eastern/central North America conveniently packages three cassettes and an accompanying booklet into a single videocassette-like box. Each tape groups bird species according to acoustic similarity in order to help you learn the basics of bird-song identification. Soon you'll know just by listening whether the bird skulking underneath the bushes is an orange-crowned warbler, a chipping sparrow, or a dark-eyed junco.
Book Description
Birding by Ear: Western is a unique and important new tool for birders. Now they can master one of the most useful and difficult field skills - the ability to recognize birds by their songs and calls. Birding By Ear: Western points out exactly what to listen for to tell one bird from another. As the Peterson Field Guide groups birds by visual similarity, Birding by Ear: Western groups them by acoustic similarity. Dick Walton and Bob Lawson have arranged ninety-one common species into nineteen intelligible learning groups - "sing-songers," "trillers," "name-sayers," "warbling songsters," and many others. The entertaining and educational narrative does the same job as the arrows in the Peterson Field Guide to Eastern Birds, pinpointing the precise differences between similar species. The songs themselves are recorded to the highest acoustic standards and are a delight to listen to. Birding by Ear: Western can enable anyone to become a better birder. Use it in conjunction with the Peterson Field Guide to Western Bird Songs, which provides a thorough catalog of the songs and calls of the familiar birds of western North America. Birding by Ear: Western may well become as essential to you as your Field Guide and binoculars.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent intro to bird songs.......2006-08-17
I've birded for a number of years but I wanted to be able to distinguish birds by their calls, especially the shy ones. This CD volme was the perfect introduction. Dick Walton's informal, almost folksy, comments made for enjoyable listening and learning. Sure there are only 91 species but one great sampling. Now that he has taught me "hooks" and "handles" I have graduated to using the Stokes CDs, but at least I can now differentiate closely related songs thanks to Mr. Walton.
If you are new to bird songs, please start with this volume. In contrast the Stokes volume presents the songs, but no commentary. It is up to you to find the hooks and handles and figure out how to memorize all the songs.
BTW, I disagree with Mr Walton on one bird. He says the California Quail is calling "Chicago, Chicago." In my field experience I am sure it is looking for "Atlanta, Atlanta."
Great CD, buy it!
A great choice for the first step in learning birdsong.......2002-05-17
If you live in North America east of the Mississipi and want to identify birds by ear, read on...
This audio set is a very well thought out and produced tutorial for introducing beginning "ear" birders to the world of birding by ear. The audio quality is excellent with several renditions of each song and call. The pace is well suited to the target audience - only after repeated listening will you want to skip ahead through sections. The groupings of similar songs seem well designed, and reflect situations in the field that pose problems. Each song is described verbally, with an onomatopoetic description. I wish the CD were coded so that sub-tracks could be accessed directly without the introductory descriptions, but the design of this set isn't as encyclopedia of song, rather as short course in learning how to identify song.
Buy this and the "More birding by ear", listen to them for 10 - 30 minutes a day (great drive time listening), and master the art of birding by ear!
Birding by Ear, Eastern/Central, Peterson Field Guides.......2001-12-07
....This set of audio tapes was a disappointment to me. I had wanted a set of bird songs to accompany my new Peterson Eastern Birds field guide, 4th edition.( Previously, I had owned the 2nd edition and its excellent, page-coordinated, accompanying tapes and had used them for years.) I bought this new set of audio tapes blind, so to speak, because they were shrink-wrapped with no real description visible. No one in any of the retail stores I consulted knew anything about them nor was willing to break into the shrink-wrapping.
....Birding by Ear, Eastern/Central is actually a 3-tape short course in identifying bird calls. It is essentially useless for field identification. To make use of this set of tapes, one would have to sit down and listen and listen and listen to interminable commentary by a sonorous male voice introducing bird calls in clusters that are of minimal use because they are grouped by similarity, which often doesn't translate into geography or habitat. The second side of the third tape is a "review" that is actually a test.... one must listen to a series of unidentified songs and try to remember what they are, after having spent the hours required to listen to the other 5 sides of the tapes.
.... The up side of this set of tapes is that the bird song recordings are excellent. They include both the song and the call. (But they are useless in the field in this format.)
Great Tool!!!!.......2001-08-07
Great learning tool for the novice and a great reminder for the seasoned veteran.
Richard K. Walton, author.......2001-06-12
Most birdsong CDs/tapes are lengthy "lists" of birdsongs. The "Birding by Ear" series is a unique tutorial that teaches you to recognise and recall birdsongs. If you want to learn to identify birds by their songs and calls this is the product for you! Ideal for birders East of the Mississippi!
