Nineteenth-century African American businessman, activist, and educator Booker Taliaferro Washington's Up from Slavery is one of the greatest American autobiographies ever written. Its mantras of black economic empowerment, land ownership, and self-help inspired generations of black leaders, including Marcus Garvey, Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X, and Louis Farrakhan. In rags-to-riches fashion, Washington recounts his ascendance from early life as a mulatto slave in Virginia to a 34-year term as president of the influential, agriculturally based Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. From that position, Washington reigned as the most important leader of his people, with slogans like "cast down your buckets," which emphasized vocational merit rather than the academic and political excellence championed by his contemporary rival W.E.B. Du Bois. Though many considered him too accommodating to segregationists, Washington, as he said in his historic "Atlanta Compromise" speech of 1895, believed that "political agitation alone would not save [the Negro]," and that "property, industry, skill, intelligence, and character" would prove necessary to black Americans' success. The potency of his philosophies are alive today in the nationalist and conservative camps that compose the complex quilt of black American society.

Book Description

Autobiography of influential spokesman and former slave who became a major figure in the struggle for equal rights.

Download Description

Vividly recounting Washington's life--his childhood as a slave, struggle for education, founding and presidency of the Tuskegee Institute, and meetings with the country's leaders, this book reveals the conviction he held that the black man's salvation lay in education, industriousness and self-reliance.

Very interesting perspective on slavery from someone who actually lived through it. All slave tales are not alike.

5 out of 5 stars Well-written story of an amazing man.......2007-05-08

I knew next to nothing about Booker T. Washington prior to reading this book. Now I feel honored to have had his story shared with me. Despite the risk of sounding cliche, he has become an inspiration and hero to me. If not for his convictions and spirit, he would have been quite ordinary. Instead, he accomplished incredible goals, overcoming unimaginable feats, and has reached an inumerable amount of people, generation after generation. This book is a mainstay on my bedside table. Required reading for all.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Autobiography.......2007-04-10

This autobiography of an African American intellectual will inspire you. See how Washington rose from nothing to hold a respectable place in American history.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring & Uplifting.......2007-03-29

The life story of Booker T. Washington was uplifting and inspiring. This shows that a person can arise from the ashes of their life, and make something worthwhile of themselves. Being born a slave was a major set back in their lives. Booker was determined to received and education at any cost, and he succeeded. Nothing was handed to him. Hard work and perserverance was the only way he could accomplish his goals.
Through turbalent times after the Civil War, Booker united the white and black race. Together they worked to build one of the finest educational institution in the south-Tuskegee, renamed Tuskegee University.

    Book Description

Like his mother and grandmother before him, Joseph Jacobs was born into slavery. Joseph lives with his grandmother and sister in North Carolina, but he has not seen his mother for more than seven years. Unbeknownst to Joseph, his mother, Harriet, has been hiding from her owner in the attic of the house that Joseph lives in. But when Harriet's hiding place is in danger of being revealed, she is forced to flee north to safety only moments after being reunited with her family.

Devastated by losing his mother for the second time, Joseph begins to ponder the nature of the world he lives in. Soon Joseph, seeking freedom and a place where he can be himself, follows his mother north. As he searches for answers, Joseph experiences life in Massachusetts, California, Australia, and aboard a whaling ship -- but there's no place where Joseph feels that he can truly be free.

In this companion novel to Letters from a Slave Girl, Joseph's stirring quest for freedom and identity is told through letters imagined by the author. Based on the real-life stories of Harriet and Joseph Jacobs, Letters from a Slave Boy is set against the backdrop of some of the most exciting and turbulent times in American history.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and uplifting.......2007-02-14

In 1901, Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) published this autobiography. Born into slavery, after emancipation, Mr. Washington developed a philosophy that African-Americans needed to sweep away the ignorance that their subservient position had left them with, and earn the respect of the whites through hard work and excellence. In 1881 he founded the Tuskegee Institute to teach African-Americans how to study, how to work hard and intelligently (producing better results than the white businesses of the day), and how to have respect for themselves and others. This is Mr. Washington's story of his youth and his success at Tukegee.

This is a fascinating and uplifting book. Though cognizant of the racism that often surrounded him, Mr. Washington never lost his faith in the basic goodness of the people of all colors that he met. The only problem I had with this excellent book was the knowledge I could not shake, that Mr. Washington's faith was not rewarded, and the white community of the day would not give the African-American community respect and fair treatment.

That said, though, this is a great and wonderful book, which should rightly be considered an American classic. If you want to read a book that is a window on the America of the late nineteenth century, or if you want an uplifting book about a man of faith and love, then I highly recommend that you get this book!

Up From Slavery is the autobigraphy of one of the most remarkable men America has produced, a man born in slavery but lifted by his own vision and perseverance to a position of leadership and power. The son of a slave woman, Booker T. Washington struggled to acquire an education for himself, then dedicated his life to educating others. His is a story of almost unbelievable devotion and selflessness, an inspiration to people all over the world as long as men recognize the value of courage and human dignity.

Aleksandr Nikitenko, born into Russian serfdom in 1804, almost miraculously gained his freedom as a young man, thirty-seven years before serfdom was abolished in the Russian Empire. His compelling autobiography -- here translated into English for the first time -- is one of the very few ever written by a former serf. Nikitenko describes the tragedy, despair, unpredictability, and astounding luck of his youth, bringing to life as never before the experience of a serf in nineteenth-century Russia.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating look at life in early 19th century Russia.......2001-10-30

What a fun book! The author tells of his life as a serf in the Imperial Russia of the early 19th Century. Admittedly, his was not the life of a typical serf--he was well educated, eventually being emancipated by his "owner" (and the description of this process is in itself fascinating). The great part of this book is in the details--the descriptions of the people, places, and interactions of his childhood; the reader cannot help sympathizing with his poor father who tries over and over again to make the best of his situation, yet is trapped by his social standing. This work is a great addition to the current understanding of life in Russia during the period.

This book is very quick to read. It's small so I keep it in my purse and I use it everytime I go grocery shopping. Beware, some of the information is very shocking. I definately recommend to anyone trying to become a vegetarian/vegan.

IE: a reference list of animal ingredients to look out for in your food/cosmetics, etc. Nothing that you can't find elsewhere on the web, but it's nice to have it summarized in one handy booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Food for thought!.......2007-04-19

As a whole food consumer, though not a vegan, this small, informative book has me reconsidering my diet. While I do occassionally enjoy organic dairy products and free range meat, I sometimes feel guilty in doing so. Frankly, I was startled to learn about the vast plethora of obscure ingredients in our food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals derived from animals. The E.G. Smith Collective has really done an outstanding job collecting all this data. That said, I was a little dismayed that a few of their vegan alternatives were less than eco-friendly. For example, beeswax candles are certainly much healthier for the planet than petroleum candles! (Furthermore, having never been a beekeeper, I really don't understand how extracting beeswax from a honeycomb actually injures the bees. I would also question the idea that eating royal jelly, bee pollen and honey is honestly bad for you given their importance in natural medicine). In addition to suggesting a lot of questionable synthetic alternatives to animal ingredients, they also recommend a lot of soybean products. Personally, I love tofu, soy milk, and tofu ice cream, but I'm also aware of what Vandana Shiva refers to as "soy imperialism." Unfortunately, the authors of this book never discuss the ecological danger of biotechnology. While health food is expensive and brings up lots of complicated class issues, I would really encourage consumers (if you can) to only buy organically grown, non-GMO soy products. I would also suggest you eat other high protein veggie foods as well to diversify both your diet and the heath food industry. Whether I eventually eliminate animal ingredients entirely from my diet, I'm still not sure. However, I am extremely grateful for this excellent vegan resource for opening my eyes to the pervasiveness of animal cruelity in our economic system and challenging both my anthropocentric attitude towards animals and my position on food politics.

4 out of 5 stars Everything you never wanted to know,.......2007-01-26

in a good way. It's amazing where animal products show up in our products. Sneaky meat people. I recommend this book for vegans, vegis, life lovers, and anyone who want's to know just what they are buying.

5 out of 5 stars essential for vegans and vegetarians.......2006-07-26

This book is filled with more information than you may ever have thought you needed in order to live a cruelty-free lifestyle, but it's all here, presented in a readable and highly useful format. I can't imagine adopting a vegan diet without the aid of this book.

                    Book Description

Laughing Kookaburras are the largest kingfishers in the world, and Blue-winged Kookaburras are not far behind. Their size and distinctive shape and posture make them easily recognisable; their comical and personable characters make them readily memorable. They are able to live in a wide variety of habitats, and adapt to living around humans relatively well. This cheerful familiarity has caused them to figure prominently in the psyches and folklores of all peoples who have inhabited Australia.

Kookaburras live in family groups marked by the extremes of social behaviour. Whilst in the nest, chicks fight their siblings for dominance and food so aggressively that the smallest chick is often killed. In complete contrast, many adult kookaburras delay their own breeding in order to help their relatives raise young.

Kookaburra: King of the Bush provides a complete overview of kookaburras and their unique place in Australian culture and natural history.
