Book Description
Ann Patchett and the late Lucy Grealy met in college in 1981, and, after enrolling in the Iowa Writer's Workshop, began a friendship that would be as defining to both of their lives as their work. In Grealy's critically acclaimed memior, Autobiography of a Face, she wrote about losing part of her jaw to childhood cancer, years of chemotherapy and radiation, and endless reconstructive surgeries. In Truth & Beauty, the story isn't Lucy's life or Ann's life, but the parts of their lives they shared. This is a portrait of unwavering commitment that spans twenty years, from the long winters of the Midwest, to surgical wards, to book parties in New York. Through love, fame, drugs, and despair, this is what it means to be part of two lives that are intertwined ... and what happens when one is left behind.
This is a tender, brutal book about loving the person we cannot save. It is about loyalty, and being lifted up by the sheer effervescence of someone who knew how to live life to the fullest.
Customer Reviews:
an unusual friendship.......2007-10-13
What is a friend, and how much can one give to another? Can a friendship be sustained when one demands so much of the other? The answer given in this memoir is "yes".
This is a beautifully written piece that explores the remarkable friendship of two talented women authors.
Truly a Story of Truth and Beauty.......2007-10-11
Truth & Beauty is a memoir to Patchett's best friend Lucy Grealy, a fellow writer. They went to Sarah Lawrence together, but their friendship truly developed when they were at grad school in Iowa. Lucy had cancer when she was younger and it had left her face deformed. During the book, Patchett details the many many surgeries that Lucy would undergo in order to try and "fix" her face, she talks about their writing: the process, what inspired them, where they wrote; their love lives, their jobs, their successes but most importantly is the strong friendship that bound them together through the good, the bad, and the very bad.
This isn't a light-hearted, heart warming story, however it is a beautifully written tale of the power of friendship and how your friends can be your lifelines. Once again, Patchett has wowed me with her writing and I look forward to reading her other 2 books that I haven't gotten around to yet...
sensitively written book.......2007-10-10
This is a sensitively written book about the friendship between the author and the complex Lucy Grealy, author of "Diary of a Face." What made it especially interesting for me was the story of the long road with its intricate twists and turns that finally led both of these women to be well respected and published authors. This book is a good permanent addition to anyone's library, especially if you like autobiographies, biographies or stories about writers and how they got there.
We are better for loving and being loved, however imperfectly........2007-09-11
After reading Ann Patchett's tale of her friendship with Lucy Grealy, I kept thinking that if an alien, unfamiliar with the concept or practice of love, landed on earth and asked me for a book to learn about love, in all its intricate resiliency, this is the book I'd lend. We are none of us perfect, but we all can love and be loved and be better for it. What Ms. Patchett details with such unflinching honesty is that sometimes people come into our lives, complicated individuals who both entrance and antagonize us. Yet we love them, we can't help but nurture them. We recognize the fierceness and frailty of their spark and we do all that we can to keep it bright as long as possible. We know they love us too, even if only as they are able. When they are gone, we suffer the loss of their bright, flawed humanity. I imagine it took her memoir to make Ann realize how vital she was to Lucy as well. This is a painful, beautiful elegy. I recommend reading this first, then reading Lucy Grealy's "Autobiography of a Face". Author is too vain for me.......2007-08-29
I only found this book interesting in the parts where the author is talking about the end of her friend Lucy's life.

People teens admire talk about God.......2007-04-13
Author Amy Hammond Hagberg wanted to help teens--her own and others--answer questions about God, including the big question: "How do you know he's real?"
Hagberg wrote to sports stars, recording artists and other celebrities, asking them to reflect on their life experiences and share how the reality of God was making a difference to them personally and professionally. The responses she received--from NBA players, Christian musicians, 'American Idol' contestants and others--are honest, revealing, and often compelling.
The resulting book is a collection of celebrity essays: mini-bios that focus on the reality of God in the midst of media attention, success and failure, and broken relationships. Contributors include Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic basketball team, quarterback David Carr of the Houston Texans, and popular Christian recording artist Clay Crosse.
Some of the interviews are especially helpful for Hagberg's original target readers: teens. Among these, Chrissy Conway of 'Zoe Girl' talks about her parents' divorce, the party scene, and the twists and turns along her personal career path in ways that connect with teens and with anyone who has ever considered attempting a career in music.
Hagberg is a gifted and skilled writer who keeps readers turning the pages as she unpacks celebrity affirmations of the presence of God in their lives. A great gift book for readers from teens through Gen X, but the stories here will interest readers of any age!
Note: Reviewer Dr. David Frisbie is an author and Executive Director of The Center for Marriage & Family Studies in Del Mar, California.
Armchair Interviews says: Anything that can help teens understand their role in living a good life is good.
Celebrities share their faith.......2007-03-11
This is an ideal book to give to people who have questions about becoming a Christian, and who love sports and music celebrities.
44 extreme sports and music celebrities tell their stories in this book, from Jonny Lang (recording artist), to Barlow Girl (rock group), Kimiko Soldati (Olympic diving), CJ Hobgood (surfer), Dwight Howard (NBA player, Orlando Magic), Mick Hannah (downhill mountain bike racer), Jimmie McGuire (professional motocross rider) and more.
They share hard times they faced, how they became Christians and how their paths are more joyful due to their faith. Being a Green Bay Packer fan I turned to Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila's story of growing up in South Central Los Angeles with a tough background, a Muslim dad and a Christian mom, and how his becoming a Christian led to his current happy family life and NFL career. Christian Hosoi, professional skateboarder, after serious drug problems, is now leading a skateboarding ministry.
The two page "God's Road Map" at the end of each celebrity's story contains perceptive questions and Scriptures. Sports and music lovers will enjoy this book, and it can even be a "past watchful dragons book" that will steer doubting people on a new clear path.
god unplugged.......2007-02-02
God Unplugged by Ammy Hagberg was very interesting. It is 403 pages long and was published in 2006 by Destiny Image. In the story top athletes, musicians, and also stars tell how god helped them get where they wanted to be and changed their lives.
In the story there were 44 celebrity reflections on true life experiences with god. Many of these celebrities have been extremely low in their lives and god has pulled them out of them. Also in some cases they have had no luck in there lives and finally achieved their goals after they gave there lives god. All of these people believe that god has either given them opportunities or even the strength to work through where they were to get to where they want to be.
I thought that this was a good book. I enjoyed reading it and seeing how god has changed all of these people's lives. The strengths of this book are that it has top named celebrities that people actually want to read about. The weakness of this book is that there is nothing to find out nest so you don't have a reason to keep reading. I did like how god actually gave them the strength to continue and succeed in life. The writing was very boring to me, but I liked the idea.
The book gave a lasting effect on me because I have a saint Christopher necklace that my grandma gave to me before she passed away and that keeps me safe when I race motorcross. So, I think that god has a great power on us. I would recommend this book, it will make you think.
After reading this, you certainly KNOW he is real!.......2007-01-25
Truly, this, and the book before this, are really awesome books!
** Why?
Because they give some very good insights into other peoples way to God. Not only that, if you don't know the Bible inside and out (and even if you do, actually!), there are quotations from the Bible explaining the why and hows, depending on the story of the person interviewed.
All this, with Amy Hagbergs very nice way of writing (down to earth serious mixed with a nice blend of humor) makes this book a pleasure to read!
Personally, I strongly recommend this book to everyone. It might be those who Seek, or those who have found, it doesn't matter, in my opinion! :)
Fantastic book!.......2007-01-24
What a great book! Amy Hagberg has gathered some of today's biggest sports and music celebs to talk about how they know God is real. This book is in stark contrast to so many of today's depressing, tragedy-focused headlines. And the list of celebrities is impressive! [...]

Fantastic, Simply Fantastic.......2002-08-20
I read this book over and over. Bill Horan sets a new standard for figure modeling and this book does a wonderful job of showcasing his work. The production qualities of the book are excellent. Most of these photos are incredible. There are many times when I study the photos of Horan's figures, look at my own and say, "How does he do it?"
Which leads me to my only disappointment with this book. While Horan describes his techniques fairly clearly, the descriptions are relatively brief and he discuss use of enamels only.
His painting example is on a 100mm figure. I would love to see a similar section describing painting a 54mm figure as I am curious on how his techniques would vary.
The captions are very good and one can learn much reading them and studying the figures. I also enjoyed Bill's description of his early days in the hobby.
I hope that Bill decides to do another volume. I'll be the first to sign up for it. How about a DVD with a painting clinic too.
Worth its weight in gold.......2000-11-16
It's difficult to quantify Bill Horan's contribution to historical figure modelling. His sculpting and painting set a standard by which other work was judged for at least a decade and this title continues to be a source of inspiration for me six years on. The author's steady improvement over the years (including his early, modest, efforts) is documented, which I found fascinating and should provide a spur to improvement for any dedicated modeller.
This is well written in the author's distinctive style and extensively illustrated with colour photos including a number of step-by-step sequences. In addition to many of Bill's incredible 54mm single figures, vignettes and dioramas there are numerous pictures of the work of other noted miniaturists.
Beginning with a chapter on painting a single stock figure (David Grieve's 100mm Sergeant, 79th Highlanders) the progressive photos clearly show the author's enamel-painting style, complementing the detailed written account and 15 pages showing the work of other artists round off the chapter. Chapter two covers conversion and scratchbuilding, beginning with one of the author's trademark 54mm sculpts (a Confederate infantryman in this case) built from a commercial head, resin parts, wire and putty. The text covers materials, tools and posing before detailing the techniques used. The finished figure (shown approximately four times lifesize in one view) highlights the extremely high finish and just how much additional detail can be achieved at the painting stage. 25 pages of single figures by the author and others finish off the chapter. Chapter three is on vignettes, with a detailed look at the creation of the author's "Fight For The Flag" with 13 pages of additional photos of vignettes rounding out the chapter. Chapter four covers perhaps the most impressive side of figure modelling, dioramas, with an in-depth look at the creation of the noted "Ghosts Of Chillianwallah" and also includes photos of the author's legendary "Last Stand At Gandamak" from 1988. The final chapter is on mounted figures and dioramas with "A Cloud Of Red", an exquisite three-horse vignette depicting the charge of the 16th Lancers at Aliwal, covered in detail. Eight pages of photos of top-notch mounted subjects complete the book. Although only touched on lightly in the text, careful study of the groundwork on the author's pieces will benefit the reader in this under-appreciated area of the hobby.
For anyone interested in figure modelling, an absolute must-have from an acknowledged master.
Excellent comprehensive guide to military modelling!.......1998-05-02
Horan reveals his techniques for creating unique military models. He begins with his basic painting methods that are applicable no matter which painting medium is used. He then shows how to sculpt figures using ordinary items such as paper clips and toothpicks. The book then proceeds to the more difficult tasks of creating vinettes and dioramas. The book also includes a wealth of clear color pictures defining all the steps, as well as galleries of the authors (and others) work. This is a very valuable reference!

Book Description
In this probing book Oliver O'Donovan extends the exploration into the correspondence between theology and politics that he began in "The Desire of the Nations." While that earlier work took as its starting point the biblical proclamation of God's authority, "The Ways of Judgment" approaches political theology from the political side. Responsive to developments such as the uncertain role of the United Nations after the Cold War and the expansion of the European Union, O'Donovan also draws on the extensive tradition of Christian political thought and a range of contemporary theologians.
Rather than supposing, as does some political theology, that the right political orientations are well understood and that theological beliefs should be renegotiated to fit them, O'Donovan considers contemporary social and political realities to be impenetrably obscure and elusive. Finding the gospel proclamation luminous by contrast, O'Donovan sheds light from the Christian faith upon the intricate challenge of seeking the good in late-modern Western society.
Pursuing his analysis in three movements, O'Donovan first considers the paradigmatic political act, the act of judgment, and then takes up the question of forming political institutions through representation. Finally, he tackles the opposition between political institutions and the church, provocatively investigating how Christians can be the community instructed by Jesus to "judge not."

From the author: I observed a juvenile male Bare-necked Umbrellabird (Cephalopterus glabricollis) forage on arthropods flushed by a large swarm of the army ant Eciton burchellii in the Caribbean foothills of Costa Rica. Apparently, this is the first report of this species attending an army ant swarm. At least 60 birds of eight different species were foraging at that swarm, the largest assemblage of army ant-following birds reported in the Neotropics.

From the author: I describe the nest, egg, and nesting behavior of the Snowy Cotinga (Carpodectes nitidus) in La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica. The nest was placed 7.5 m high on a fork formed by four branches of a leafless tree. The nest was a simple platform made of dry tendrils and lichens. It contained a single large egg, which took at least 27 days to hatch. The nest and chick were predated the day after hatching. Both nest and egg characteristics resemble those of other cotinga species.
