Book Description

These travel diaries capture the essence and exuberance of the young legend, Che Guevara. In January 1952, Che set out from Buenos Aires to explore South America on an ancient Norton motorcycle. He encounters an extraordinary range of people-from native Indians to copper miners, lepers and tourists-experiencing hardships and adventures that informed much of his later life.

This expanded, new edition from Ocean Press, published with exclusive access to the Che Guevara Archives held in Havana, includes a preface by Che's daughter, Aleida Guevara. It also features previously unpublished photos (taken by Che on his travels), as well as new, unpublished parts of the diaries, poems and letters.

"A Latin James Dean or Jack Kerouac."-Washington Post

"For every comic escapade of the carefree roustabout there is an equally eye-opening moment in the development of the future revolutionary leader. By the end of the journey, a politicized Che Guevara has emerged to predict his own revolutionary future."-Time

The publication of this new, expanded edition of The Motorcycle Diaries coincides with the release of Robert Redford's new film based on the Diaries. This film and another forthcoming from Steven Soderbergh in Fall 2003 will provoke even greater "Che-mania" and increase sales of all Ocean's titles on Che Guevara.

5 out of 5 stars Better Translation, Great Book.......2007-05-15

I'm so pleased that you had this earlier English translation of The Motorcycle Diaries and that it arrived in time for my Spanish class presentation. I also read the newer edition that came out with the movie in 2004. Your book had a much better translation. Thanks for your help. Sometimes older books are better books.

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing look into Che.......2007-04-11

Seen the movie long before the book, but this book was very interesting to see how Che's thoughts began to form before he became only known as Che. Pictures in the centre were an added bonus. It's a quick read with concise notes (they are journal notes afterall), and it gave me a greater understanding and feeling of compassion for Ernesto Guevara - someone who I didn't know a lot about and in the USA you hear about how bad he is. Good thing I live in Canada, with an open mind.

3 out of 5 stars Is Che Guevara a hero ?.......2007-01-13

Brad Delong, Matthew Yglesias, Armed Liberals and others have been having a discussion about whether Che Guevara can be considered a hero. Here is the hero in his own words:

"During the night I had a bad case of the runs and, being ashamed to leave a souvenir in the pot under my bed, I climbed out on to the window ledge and gave up all of my pain to the night and blackness beyond. The next morning I looked out to see the effect and saw that two metres below lay a big sheet of tin where they were sun-drying their peaches; the added spectacle was impressive."

(From The Motorcycle Diaries)
Sorry, but I see nothing heroic in sticking one's arse out the window and letting drive onto a pile of fruit. I would never do that- but then, I'm not a communist.

I was recently in venezuela ... I wish the people well. But I sadly fear that there are going to be a lot of tears shed when all is said and done.

3 out of 5 stars Lads on the road.......2006-10-01

The text of the original motorcycle diaries gives a strong sense, much more than the movie, of the factors that influenced this artist/activist as young man. Idealistic, cheeky, sexually libidinous, political, strong minded. Che and his older companion set off on a wild journey across South America. The wretched poverty they witness across that continent - especially when he shares a blanket with a destitute beggar high up on the Andean Sierra - strikes home, as well as some of the aesthetic beauties of the wild and mystical land, such as the Inca ruins around Cuzco, Peru. Che's description of the stonework at the Sacsaywaman fortress rivals the greatest travel writings of Robert Byron, Bruce Chatwin or Patrick Leigh Fermor in its stylishness and accuracy of description.

In places the narrative drags though, obviously written at points of sheer exhaustion, or boredom, or lack of inspiration.

3 out of 5 stars this translation leaves a lot unsaid.......2006-07-13

i really enjoyed the motorcycle diaries. when the movie was in theatres i decided to read the book first so that i could understand the film better, but i chose to read it in the original spanish version. it was thought provoking prose. i was impressed that such insight came from the child of a wealthy argentinean family. when i read the translation in english i was a little disappointed. i did think that it was very good, but a little bit of the nuance is lost. if at all possible i suggest that you read it in the original spanish text, it is a little bit more inspiring.

5 out of 5 stars Hasinai : A Traditional History of the Caddo Confederacy.......1999-11-27

This book is one of my all time favorites. This book is very easy to read. The late Vynola Beaver Newkumet, a respected Caddo Tribal elder wrote this book with the assistance of a talented non tribal member writer. It is full of easily absorbed interesting information about the Caddo Tribe and its people.

You will find yourself returning to favorite passages in this book to re experience them. This book is a traditional history but it isn't mainstream American traditional history. It is explained from a distinctly Native American point of view.

Hasinai provides narratives of Caddo Tribal business council and cultural leaders. It also provides information about Caddo tribal words and language. This is a living history book. There are very well taken photographs in this book. Some must be extremely treasured by their owners.

This definitely is a must have book. You and your children will enjoy it. It will be a conversation piece.

    Book Description

A political science text for the 21st Century, DEMOCRACY UNDER PRESSURE has provided well over a million students with a comprehensive look at the fundamentals of American Government. Milton Cummings, a respected scholar and academic, and David Wise, a best selling author and political analyst, bring their talents to bear on a text that conveys a balanced, realistic guide to American politics while describing the institutions of American government. In this edition, the theme of "democracy under pressure" is highlighted more fully in the narrative and in the boxed features that focus students on the way democracy responds to needs and demands of various groups over time. The text includes a discussion of the systems approach - a framework of analysis that discusses the political process in terms of inputs and outputs - as well as a key question and related questions to consider in each chapter. DEMOCRACY UNDER PRESSURE focuses throughout on the gap that exists between rhetoric and reality in government today. Streamlined content in this edition makes the book even more accessible and appealing to students and instructors alike.

1 out of 5 stars I hope no one else is subjected to the torture that is Democracy Under Pressure........2007-05-07

I could not believe how horribly distorted the information in this text was. The authors took such a partisan perspective in the writing and portrayl of their information that it was nauseating. For example, Nixon is referred to in EVERY chapter of the book, always negatively, and about every 4 pages (out of 680 pages). The only person referred to more frequently is Bush (Jr.) who actually makes sense because he's the current president. Even at that, he's always referred to (as well) in a negative light or "neutrally" with a negative blow following soon thereafter.

The authors use the age-old manipulation of terms and words to mask political objectives (i.e. subtle indoctrination). In the section on abortion, for example, those that are against abortion are always referred to as "anti-abortion" while those that are for abortion are always referred to as "pro-choice." The only time when "pro-life" as an identifying term is used is when they are referring to "anti-abortion" groups curtailing rights to "freedom of reproductive choice" or killings perpetrated by those groups.

Aside from many misleading statements, completely partisan representations of incidents, and outright blasphemes, the authors also say that Bush fired members of his staff when he won re-election in 2004 which is not true. For an update to the Text that occurred by 2006 at least you would think that they could get their information straight. The only thing about the administration that they didn't seem to have a problem regurgitating into print was the fact that "no weapons of mass destruction have been found in Iraq to date." For a TENTH EDITION (the edition that I have) you would think they would have ironed out the mistakes and be able to present information in the closest to non-partisan and factual manner possible. But this country doesn't pride people on their ability to think apparently since this sorry excuse for a textbook is published and revered.

In sum: the fact that books like this exist and are widely used in classrooms make me lose all hope in humanity, formal education, and the future of America itself. I will never get back the hours of my life that I've been required to spend digesting the "information" in this terrible excuse for educational material. The least I can do is tell you not to waste your brain cells and time. If we only live once, this is not the way to spend any part of our time.

3 out of 5 stars Great writing but HORRIBLY edited.......2007-02-19

I bought this book for a polital science class and had to stop during my study session to write this review. Was the editor on crack? Don't get me wrong, it's well written, but the paragraphs jump around haphazardly. I'll be reading about 9-11 in one paragraph and the next paragraph will be about the Bush-Gore election followed by a passage about Clinton's performance in office. Editors please put this stuff in chronological order!

4 out of 5 stars Good but Long.......2004-07-15

I was surprised at how interesting this book made government. It's not boring like so many other college text books are. There are lots of examples that explain concepts in an interesting way, and there are little side stories about our country's history.

Although this book is interesting the chapters are soooo long. I used this book for a 3 week summer government course and the long chapters nearly killed me. I found that I could skip the introduction to each chapter which saved me a whole page of reading. Also, I could sometimes read the first and last paragraph of a section and get the point of the section without having to read all the examples of an issue. The end of the chapter summaries are good, and very usefull to studying for exams.

4 out of 5 stars Uses a lot of examples.......2004-05-25

I used this text as a course textbook for a college class last semester. One of the good things about this book is that it contains a LOT of examples about every topic concerning government that is discussed in the book. One of the bad things that I've found however, is that these examples make the book very tedious - if you are just trying to get straight information (ie: to learn from), and you want to do it quickly, I would not recommend this book; however, if you are seeking to learn, and you learn best by seeing real-life examples, then this is the book for you, for it has plenty of those! Personally, I found it a little too much, but I realize that this is just my opinion, so I don't knock the book at all.

5 out of 5 stars Democracy Under Pressure.......2003-09-12

was a good book, a very interesting college course. This book was easy to read and follow.

        4 out of 5 stars Long Examples.......1998-03-05

The format of this book is straight forward, and easy to comprehend. Unfortunately, the beginning of many chapters proved to be long and tedious before actually getting into the workings of government. Although the examples were necessary to illustrate daily workings of government, they could have been cut back.
