Primer for survival situations.......2007-10-05
An easy read and a great story! I attended Air Force survival training in Spokane back in the '70s, and this book shows just how valuable that training can be. Scott did everything right, and as a result he lived to tell us his inspiring tale. Should be required reading for anyone attending the school at Fairchild, and maybe it is.
A touching story.......2007-03-28
This narritive of survival by Capt. Scott O'Grady is a powerfull story. I highly recomend this for all christian adults. This story does heavily focus on the religious aspect of Capt. O'Grady but it does so in a way that will move anyone who is willing to keep an open mind.
Suspenseful and Inspiratoinal.......2007-03-28
I used to work for the Air Force as part of a large program to support the effective operation of electronic warfare equipment, so I had a pretty good understanding of some aspects of the shootdown in 1995. The book went far beyond the shootdown into a gut-wrenching story of survival. I almost felt like I was there. Scott then gave a good description of all the celebration and hoopla that followed. However, in my opinion, the best part of the story begins with "Amid the hoopla...". Scott showed true humility in recognizing all the players that made such a positive difference in his life, and in others. And, most important, he recognized that our devotion to material possessions and pre-occupation with self-serving actions really mean little or nothing in our lifetime. Our faith in God and our actions which are inspired by that faith are what's really important in our earthly existence.
Great Plane, Great Person.......2007-03-01
I wood recomend this book to any person young or old. This great book about a stranded F-16 pilot shot down over Bosina. The detail is amazing and so are the flash-backs. The way he described it made you feel like you were there!!!
Honor Indeed!.......2006-08-07
Scott O'Grady truly did return with Honor after a very difficult experience. On a routine mission, his F-16 was shot down over Bosnia. He gave great detail about his preparation for such an event and exactly what happened. He survived because of the training that he had previously received and the grace of God. He gives credit where credit is due throughout the story. You will enjoy reading the details of a true American hero's difficult few days. As an American, I am proud to know that we have men like Scott O'Grady on our side.

A True American.......2000-05-30
If you want to read a book that will make you proud to be an American, look no further! Colonel Day is a great hero and I appreciate what he and other Americans in Vietnam had to endure in preserving the right principles which represents the true American people. Thanks to Amazon.com for finding this book which I have enjoyed very much.
BUY THIS BOOK!.......2000-05-02
Of the many Vietnam era POW accounts I've read, this one is surely the most in depth and graphic in its descriptions. All by and about "Bud" Day who vividly recounts his story in a pure class act manner. This guy's somewhere between John Wayne and Albert Einstein, but no doubt would be the first to insist he's just one of the many who did his duty.
Bud Day, a man exemplifying what America should be........1999-03-23
I bought and read this book after hearing Col. Day speak at the U.S. Air Force Museum. I knew he could only highlight his POW experience in the hour and a half he had to speak. This book is a true testimony of the faith and courage it takes to resist torture, terror, starvation and captivity while maintaining one's dignity and honor under the worst circumstances imaginable. One cannot read this book without feeling immense pride in America's fighting men.
Must reading for anyone interested in subject matter.......1998-01-28
Col. Day puts the reader there with him. This is the ultimate "American Hero" story. It becomes difficult not to believe that you are reading a Tom Clancy novel.
Bud Day - American Hero.......1998-01-15
Bud Day is, simply put, an American hero. We ought elevate men of his character and integrity rather than the spineless wonders who run this country. Bud Day - his name should be familiar to all patriots.

Stimulating.......2005-11-03
First read this classic years ago but I find myself returning to it time and again when I read a book on one of the battles Seymour covers. I go back and forth, staying slightly ahead in Seymour so I can feel a little of what the original commander felt trying to determine what's on the other side of the hill with limited information. Some have wondered why he chose the battles he did or, rather, did not choose more famous encounters. The criterion for a work like this is a battle with several decision points on both sides. So not just any battle will do. I especially like the practice of many small maps instead of one overly-detailed map. It enables one to follow the flow of the battle much better. The major fault with this book is probably the "traditional" viewpoint for at least some of the subject matter. "Old school" errors and prejudices poke through annoyingly for the American Civil War battles and even Waterloo. Still, worth a read--more than once.
Great educational fun: A wargame in text form........2000-07-24
I am glad to see that Da Capo decided to re-print this book in a cheap paperback edition. The author is always interesting and vivid (his review of Battles in Britain, for example). In this case, he takes the reader step by step through the situation as it unfolded before one of commanders, presenting information that he would have had at the time. At several critical points there is a "pause" to ask the reader to select one of the options. Immediately after in small print, Seymour explains the decision actually made and briefly discusses the wisdom of the choice. Then the narrative continues to a second critical juncture, and so on. Small tactical maps interspersed in the narrative (there are 76 in all) are quite helpful. The 25 plates containing paintings or photos of commanders, some artwork on the battlefield scenes and a few interesting contemporary cartoons aren't remarkable, but nicely complement the text. There are good orders of battle for each campaign selected and a very well chosen bibliography, arranged to match the respective battles. The selections of battles for the most part are the usual (see Creasy's 1851 classic) "decisive" encounters seen in other battle books: Hastings,Crecy, Agincourt, Cromwell in the Third (English) Civil War, Saratoga, Waterloo, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. The twentieth century battles might seem to deviate from this pattern a bit. Gaza/Palestine 1917 (instead of Passchendaele, Gallipoli, Verdun, Somme) and Anzio (instead of Britain, Barbarossa, Stalingrad, etc. for WWII). However the WWI and WWII selections are justified by the treatment in the narrative.
This is the way, in my humble opinion, military history should be taught, and to a large extent Seymour follows the methodology that has been used by the world's leading military academies.
Great reading, and terrific brain food. Highly recommended.

Book Description
Writing from the front lines of the hot wars of the post-Cold War world -- the Balkans, Africa, the Middle East, and most recently Afghanistan and Iraq for The New York Times Magazine -- David Rieff witnessed firsthand most of the armed interventions waged by the West or the United Nations in the name of human rights and democratization. His report is anything but reassuring. In this timely collection of his most illuminating articles, Rieff, one of our leading experts on the subject, reassesses some of his own judgments about the use of military might to solve the world's most pressing humanitarian problems and curb the world's cruelest human rights abusers, presenting what, taken as a whole, is a thoughtful and impassioned argument against armed intervention in all but the most extreme cases.
At the Point of a Gun raises critical questions we cannot ignore in this era of gunboat democracy. When, if ever, is it appropriate to intervene militarily in the domestic affairs of other nations? Are human rights and humanitarian concerns legitimate reasons for intervening, or is the assault on sovereignty -- sovereignty that is as much an article of faith at the UN as it is in Washington -- a flag of convenience for the recolonization of part of the world? What role should the United Nations play in alleviating humanitarian crises? And, above all, can democracy be imposed through the barrel of an M16?
Collected here for the first time, Rieff's essays draw a searing portrait of what happens when the grandiose schemes of policymakers and the grandiose ethical ambitions of human rights activists go horribly wrong in the field. Again and again, they ask the question: Do these moral ambitions of ours to protect people from massacre and want match either our means or our wisdom?
Rieff's articles appear as they were written. Some, however, are accompanied by brief reconsiderations in which the author describes how and why his thinking has changed both as he has reflected on what it means, as in Iraq, to impose democracy by force, and as he has witnessed, firsthand, what that redemptive project actually looks like in practice.
This is not an optimistic report. To the contrary, it is the chastened conclusion of a writer who was once one of the leading advocates of such interventions. But the questions Rieff raises are of the essence as the United States grapples with the harsh consequences of what it has wrought on the ground in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Customer Reviews:
Progressive Critique.......2005-10-31
Well written critic for all progressives/thinkers or anyone concerned about the use of force to achieve democratic "peace"
Almost Got the Answer.......2005-10-18
Rieff talks about many bad places. He talks about Rawanda and Bosnia. He eludes to the real truth of the matter but won't go the extra mile and say the obvious. He explains France's involement with Rawanda and how they facilitated the slaughter because of financial interests, and yet the US and UN did little to stop it. He talks about Bosnia and the anomosity between muslim and non-muslim and the NATO and NGO reactions. What Rieff seems to be approaching is a realization that some circumstances simply don't have compromises.
He talks about the increasing use of the word genocide and how it has become diluted. What he does point out is that the UN is just not up to the job. He just doesn't seem to want to say why. He talks around the answer as much as he can. I gather from these writings that the answer goes against his beliefs and dogma. He then goes on to comment about the many great leaders of Africa, even if they are just a little corrupt. He explains that the aid given to Africa was enough for them to get into trouble, but not enough to have real reforms. Rieff explains that the debt is what keeps Africa down, not the corruption. He argues against Globalization. Essentially blaming the globalization and capitalism for the failure of Africa. He just doesn't back it up with his writing.
He carps about the failures of the UN and the international community but has no real answers to help. If you want to hear someone rant about the failures, then attempt to turn those failures into failures of the US, read this book. I will say that it does contain some indepth information about the conflict in Rawanda. It just lacks understanding of humans or economics.

Great.......2003-09-10
I ordered 3 books and all came in great time frame, like new.
Packed with exciting facts about peregrine falcons.......2003-05-23
Perry's Baltimore Adventure: A Bird's Eye View Of Charm City is a picture book story by Peter E. Dans about exploring Baltimore from the viewpoint of an adventurous peregrine falcon. Kim Harrell's soft colors and absorbing illustrations bring to life this engaging story packed with exciting facts about peregrine falcons and the splendors of "Charm City." Perry's Baltimore Adventure would make a welcome and popular addition to any family, school, or community library collection.
A Falcon's Eye View.......2003-04-21
This little book by Dans and Harrell is a charming introduction to the city of Baltimore, as seen through the eyse of a young Peregrine Falcon. Endangered peregrines first returned to nesting in cities in Baltimore in the 1980's after nearly going extinct in the United States - garnering international attention. Dans skillfully weaves the birth and first year activities of a baby peregrine in with the marvelous history and architecture to be seen in downtown Baltimore. The combination of natural history and scenic Baltimore is very appealing. Kim Harrell's illustrations provide a keen perspective on the falcon's view of a beautiful city.
Wonderful illustrations!.......2003-03-04
This delightful book is a great story and a vivid tour of the city of Baltimore. The color illustrations are breathtaking and really give you a sense of flying along with the falcons as they visit various points of interest in the city. The birds are accurately depicted and the detailed panoramas make you want to look again and again. Highly recommended!

Book Description
The discovery and publication of The Cottage Book in 1999 brought the name of Sir Edward Grey—Viscount Grey of Fallodon—to the fore again after years of neglect. The longest-serving Foreign Secretary of the 20th century, he was also a naturalist and writer of the first order. First published in 1927, The Charm of Birds was an immediate popular success, but has been unavailable for many years. It deals mostly, but not exclusively, with birdsong, and is full of sensitive observation. Unlike most works of ornithology, it can be read for the pleasure of its prose alone. This handsome new edition contains all the woodcuts by Robert Gibbings that appeared in the original edition, with the addition of some of his other bird engravings.
Customer Reviews:
yawn..........2005-09-10
I am an avid birder, but I could not finish this book. Perhaps if I were a Brit, it would have more relevance since all the descriptions are of English birds. The descriptions of bird songs through the year are very dry and not particularly interesting. The woodcuts are nice, but hardly a reason to buy this book.

A charming and well illustrated book - Capital of Happiness........2000-10-15
This book is very well written in an easy to read and relaxing style which is typical of the author. It provides insight into Lord Grey's private life - his love and study of birds which he shared with his wife. The author shows us that this important man in British Politics also had an unexpected side to him which people always find interesting in someone famous! The delightful woodcuts by Robert Gibbins, some of which were specifically done for Lord Grey, especially enhance the book by their clarity and simplicity. A really good read, and not to be missed.
