The Pope is Awesome.......2007-07-25
This is some words to the wise by the beloved Pope John Paul II. There's not really too much to get out of it besides some prayers. He is on a level of sainthood such as Mother Teresa and is probably the most famous pope in history. It was an international emergency when he deceased recently, I always hated people making fun of the pope in a cartoonish fashion, which they will surely rot in hell. We miss you, Jean Paul, and I hope to God Pope Benedict is doing a goodly job of filling your shoes. God bless. R.I.P. Pope John Paul II, god bless your soul.
Quotable Quotes from Pope John Paul II.......2006-11-04
`Pope John Paul II: In My Own Words.' Whose words? The title was ambiguous and misleading. Though I found the book on the stands I didn't buy it. Eventually a friend gave me a copy and I sat down with it. The inside flap cover of the book calls it "Pope John Paul II: In His Own Words." That title makes better sense. Whatever the title be, the book contains valuable quotes from the spiritual giant of our time, Pope John Paul II. These quotes and prayers from the Pope's pastoral letters, homilies, encyclicals, speeches and audiences are classified into different heads. There is also an introduction containing a short biography of the late pope. It is a nice little book on Pope John Paul II, useful for easy reference.
Inspirational!.......2006-03-24
This book is a collection of quotations by the late Pope John Paul II and covers a variety of topics, including Salvation, Truth and Freedom, The Christian Life, Marriage and the Family, The Priesthood, Mary among many others.
This is not the type of book where you should take large bites of in one sitting. This work is better off nibbled piece by piece. I found the passages in this book wonderful inspiration for reflection and prayer. I would rarely read more than a couple of pages at a time. I would read a limited number of passages (as few as one, rarely more than five) and pause to reflect on them and sometimes oven pray over them. I found them not only spiritually edifying, but also intellectual in content.
These quotes were selected and compiled by Anthony F. Chiffolo. The come from homilies, encyclicals, pastoral letters, his own autobiography, among other sources. They are highly inspirational. The holiness and love for God, Christ, and Mary that the Pope has is clearly evident. Even though he is on his eternal journey in Heaven now, for many people like myself, though we have a new Pope, he will always have a special place in the hearts of millions.
powerful words that inform, enlighten and inspire.......2006-03-24
Anthony Chiffolo has compiled the words of His Holiness, Pope John Paul II from many of the Pope's letters, speeches, presentations and encyclicals. The quotes and prayers of Pope John Paul II are arranged into fourteen short and concise chapters, with the subjects being the Trinity, Faith, Christian Life, Progress and the Modern World, the Church, Sacraments and the Priesthood as well as others. His words are personal and intimate, yet at the same time they reach out to everyone. They have the power to touch the reader and to inform, enlighten and inspire.
Inspirational.......2005-12-23
It is hard to imagine not having this in my personal library now that I own it. I struggle at times to find a springboard for my prayers, and after opening up the pages of this book, it was easy to find sources of inspiration. It is a well organized collection of some of Pope John Paul II's most interesting and moving quotes taken throughout his papacy. I recommend it for people who seek an introduction to this Pope's life and legacy.

Blessed words.......2006-02-09
This book is a sort of `quotable quotes' from Pope John Paul II, the third-longest-serving pope in history. It is compiled as a labour of love by Anthony F. Chiffolo, drawn from many different sources, as diverse as daily audience statements to encyclicals, prayers to formal speeches. In these words, the Pope addresses matters internal and external to the church, ranging as broadly as did his 26-year papacy.
Many of the statements are theological in nature, but this is not a systematic theology. However, it is no mere `collected sayings' either, for by being compiled in a topically-arranged format, one can get a greater sense of the mind and heart of the pope on individual topics. Some of the topics are more spiritual and theological: God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit (individually reflected upon as well as in their Trinitarian unity); Soteriology (salvation); Ecclesiology (Sacrament, Church, Priesthood, etc.); as well as a section on the Blessed Virgin Mary, to whom the Pope gives special adoration. Some of the topics are very practical: Marriage and the Family; Progress and the Modern World; the Christian Life.
`Christ offers you his friendship. He gave his life so that those who wish to answer his call can indeed become his friends.'
The Pope tried his best to be a spiritual leader for all people, and had a special affection and affinity for the young people. The above quotation comes from a message to the young people of Cuba in 1998; there was a certain rock-star quality about the pope that has been widely commented upon, and it is this work with the youth of the world that will insure his name and influence being felt for generations to come.
This is a wonderful collection of pieces that show only the vaguest shadow of why Pope John Paul II will be remembered, but it is an accessible and user-friendly volume in which to remind oneself of his words and presence, which continue in different ways.
Book Description
Like its World War II namesake of Leyte Gulf fame, USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG 58) was a small combatant built for escort duty. But its skipper imbued his brand-new crew with a fighting spirit to match their forebears, and in 1988 when the guided missile frigate was thrust into the Persian Gulf at the height of the Iran-Iraq War, there was no better ship for the job. Forbidden to fire unless fired upon, Captain Paul Rinn and his crew sailed amid the chaos in the Gulf for two months, relying on wit and nerve to face down fighter jets and warships bent on the destruction of civilian vessels. Their sternest test came when an Iranian mine ripped open the ship's engine room, ignited fires on four decks, and plunged the ship into darkness. The crew's bravery and cool competence was credited with keeping the ship afloat, and its actions have become part of Navy lore and a staple of naval leadership courses ever since.
This is the first book to record the Roberts' extraordinary tale. After years of research and interviews with crewmembers, journalist Bradley Peniston chronicles the crew's heroic efforts to save the ship as they fought flames and flooding well into the night. The author also describes the frigate's origins, its operational history, and the crew's training. Peniston's personal approach to the subject not only breathes life into the historical narrative but gives readers an opportunity to get to know the individuals involved and understand the U.S. retaliation to the mining and the battle that evolved, setting the stage for conflicts to come. Foreword by Adm. William J. Crowe, USN (Ret.)

Very well written.......2007-01-27
I am very impressed by No Higher Honor. It is interesting, well written, and an engaging read. No Higher Honor is an overdue tribute to a group of heroes that deserves to be remembered.
Anyone interested in naval history should read this book. I heartily recommend it.
The real modern Navy.......2007-01-10
I was there and this book captured the entire ordeal as well as it could be captured. Bradley did a wonderful and thorough job collecting data and memories. I now know far more about the whole incident than I knew when it happened. I'm grateful that our story got told, but more grateful that it was told so well.
Wonderful Book.......2006-08-25
Tom Reinert is my nephew so I had heard a lot about the "Sammy B" and its accident. However, there was so much more that I was unaware of. Pres. Reagan's response was much greater than I originally thought (at the time I wondered why he only went after 2 oil rigs). There was also a lot of interesting info about details of the Gulf that I was unaware was happening at the time. Kudos to the author for a story that needed to be told!
No Higher Honor: Saving the USS Samuel B. Roberts.......2006-08-18
I really enjoyed this book. My son is now serving on the USS Samuel B. Roberts, so that made it even more interesting. I also bought the book for him and he is looking forward to reading it.
Great book, Very well written.......2006-07-31
This is a must have for every US Navy sailor.

This biography of a doomed aircraft carrier follows in the popular tradition of Stephen E. Ambrose's Citizen Soldiers and Tom Brokaw's The Greatest Generation--it's a book about sailors, not admirals. Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Jeff Nesmith interviewed dozens of the men assigned to the USS Yorktown, which would sink to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean during the Battle of Midway "six months almost to the hour after the bombing of Pearl Harbor." Readers will learn more about men like Joe Fazio, an Italian American kid whose greatest ambition in high school was to become a chief petty officer in the Navy, than they will about the officers who sent him to war. Nesmith's real achievement on these pages is to recreate a sense of what it was like to serve aboard an aircraft carrier in the early days of the Second World War. No Higher Honor is full of original material, and the pages are heavy with dialogue. Midway was not an inglorious moment for the 2,000 men who would abandon ship early in the morning of June 4, 1942. They had fought gallantly in what Nesmith calls "one of the great naval battles of history, one that would turn the momentum of the war in the Pacific away from Japan in favor of the United States." They are well served by this engaging tribute. --John J. Miller
Book Description
A detailed, moving account of the pivotal Battle of Midway, told through the voices and stories of the men who fought on the U.S.S. Yorktown.

Entertaining, simplistic account of a proud wartime carrier.......2003-11-27
While not written in a complex manner, this book is entertaining enough that it is easily read in a short time, while delivering some idea of what carrier duty was about in World War II. No Higher Honor covers from before Pearl Harbor to its sinking by the Japanese, to even including a epilogue that details the lives of some of the men who are featured int eh book to provide readers with an opportunity to learn what became of the crewmwn of the Yorktown. The author's discussion of some of the thousands of crewmembers and their stories is natural and gives a reader enough of an appreciation for each to make the full story that much more urgent as events unfold.
The discussion of luck, fate, duty and honor shared between the carrier Yorktown and her crew is also especially recommended for school-age students that need resource material or some kind of understanding about what is increasingly getting littler amounts of ink in high school history courses. I would urge that this be used in school libraries and recommended for readers seeking to learn about the difficulties that come from conflict and their human costs. By the end of the book, readers will definitely have a much greater appreciation for the challenges that came from service, the sacrifices stemming from war, and the humanity that bound the whole thing together.
Insightful Account of men at War.......2001-01-16
`No Higher Honor: The U.S.S. Yorktown at the Battle of Midway' by Jeff Nesmith is a insightful account of the men who made up the crew of the US aircraft carrier `Yorktown' at the Battle of Midway. As one of the previous reviews has mentioned the title may be a bit misleading as the book really starts before America's entry into World War Two. But that is fine as the author gives you an idea of some of the characters of this story, he gives you a real look at the ordinary men who served on this ship. We hear stories from some of the ships crew, from pilots and the aircraft handlers and from some of the officers.
The narrative is easy to read and the personal accounts fit right into the flow of the book. I could really picture the story and the people; the author's style of writing put you right there. I was sadden by some of what I read, of the men who lost their lives during the fighting at Midway, of friends lost and bravery unseen and un-rewarded. This is a great story, maybe not the best book on a tactical/strategic level but one of the best covering the human element of war. The book has a number of black and white photographs many previously not seen before. Overall this is a good story and I think most people who enjoy a well-written history book will enjoy this account of a fine ship during a great battle of WW2.
Good Book, Confusing Title.......2000-02-04
This book is the story of the USS Yorktown. However, contrary to the title of the book, It details the life of the Yorktown from 1941 until June 1942. Overall, this is a very good book. I was particularly interested by the personal stories and experiences of the crew members. I do feel that the book did not devote enough time to the battle of Midway. There are only about 120 pages or so that actually deal with the battle, while the rest of the book covers the Yorktown's earlier service, hence the "confusing title". There are other books available which go into much greater depth, but this book does a good job covering the basic aspects of the battle of Midway.
A very good read for anyone interested in WW II........1999-11-16
Mr. Nesmith includes first hand accounts of men who were aboard the USS Yorktown at the Battle of Midway. He describes the innocense of the young sailors, the shock of the enemy attacks, the death and destruction, the patriotism, spirit and camaraderie among the crew of the Yorktown and of course their enormous courage. For anyone who is a student of WW II this is a must read. The book gave me a glimpse of the horrors my father witnessed as the Junior Medical Officer on the Yorktown during the Battle of the Coral Sea and at Midway. Along with the others in the medical department he saw the worst of what war can do to a human being. He did not often speak of his Navy service during the Battle of Midway. In the few times he did, he expressed the greatest respect and praise for the brave pilots whose each flight meant a chance with death, for the enlisted men whose duty it was to stand with their shipmates firing their anti-aircraft guns as the attacking enemy planes bore down on them and for the officers whose decisions during the battle meant life or death for scores of men. If understanding war, how it defines a man and what courage is, then read this book. If you want to know of typical unassuming Americans who rose to great heights of unsung heroism while defending their country for you and me then read this book. Mr. Nesmith has captured it all.
Good human interest material; some extremely poor research.......1999-11-08
Though the subtitle indicates this book deals with the aircraft carrier Yorktown at the Battle of Midway, it actually follows CV-5's career from late 1941 through its sinking in June 1942. The author provides depth and variety to his human interest coverage but makes a large number of egregious factual errors, all of which are avoidable. Just a few corrections: some US torpedo planes DID return to their carriers; Geo. Gay of VT-8 did NOT receive the Medal of Honor; SBD and TBD armament is incorrectly described; and for some vague reason the Yorktown dive bombing attack that sank the Japanese carrier Soryu is glossed over in one short paragraph. This is certainly a worthy topic, but the best books on the subject are Cressman's "That Gallant Ship" plus Cressman (et al) "A Glorious Page in Our History." Naval aviation history really needs to be written by naval or aviation people.

The computer revolution brought with it new methods of getting work done--just look at today's news for reports of hard-driven, highly-motivated young software and online commerce developers who sacrifice evenings and weekends to meet impossible deadlines. Tracy Kidder got a preview of this world in the late 1970s when he observed the engineers of Data General design and build a new 32-bit minicomputer in just one year. His thoughtful, prescient book, The Soul of a New Machine, tells stories of 35-year-old "veteran" engineers hiring recent college graduates and encouraging them to work harder and faster on complex and difficult projects, exploiting the youngsters' ignorance of normal scheduling processes while engendering a new kind of work ethic.
These days, we are used to the "total commitment" philosophy of managing technical creation, but Kidder was surprised and even a little alarmed at the obsessions and compulsions he found. From in-house political struggles to workers being permitted to tease management to marathon 24-hour work sessions, The Soul of a New Machine explores concepts that already seem familiar, even old-hat, less than 20 years later. Kidder plainly admires his subjects; while he admits to hopeless confusion about their work, he finds their dedication heroic. The reader wonders, though, what will become of it all, now and in the future. --Rob Lightner

Kidder captures the essence of engineering.......2007-07-20
If you're an electrical, computer, or software engineer, you must read this book. Even though the technology described is dated, "The Soul of a New Machine" really does capture what it's like to work in technology. The fight to work on something cool, to try and have ownership over what you do, and the different types of relationships and people you encounter as an engineer are all described right here in gory detail.
This book is outstanding.
Engineering Must-Read.......2007-05-07
As an engineer in high-tech, I assumed our culture of evolved as quickly as our livelihood. Not so, I found, reading about the engineering mindset ("It doesn't matter if you're ugly or graceless or even half crazy; if you produce right results in this world, your colleagues must accept you."), the inability to *completely* verify a design ("it would be possible to test fully... but it would take literally forever to do so."), that we all like video games and Star Trek, that the term "gunslinger" (someone who "shoots from the hip") isn't something our generation of engineers coined, and that what drives us today is the same that drove the previous two generations of engineers ("I'll have to work hard, and if we do a good job, we get to do it again."). Instead of writing an account of engineers building a computer chip, Kidder has created an allegory exposing the roots of engineering to genererations beyond. Wish I had read this early in my career to know what I have to look forward to...

Slow Year for the Pulitzer Committee.......2007-04-23
I cannot begin to imagine how TSOANM garnered a Pulitzer in its publication year. I can only guess that it dealt with a subject matter -- a case study in the history of the computer -- so mysterious and cutting-edge in the view of awards committee members, that its incisiveness was simply assumed. How else to explain the praise that has been heaped on this tepid piece of computer science/management science journalism? How else to explain the fact that so little actual history -- of the computer industry or computers themselves -- and so little actual case study is to be found between the covers of this book? I don't doubt the author's earnest interest in his subjects. He strikes this reader as very well-intentioned, and his project had tremendous potential, to be sure. But he also strikes this reader as the unkeenest of observers. TSOANM could have been brilliantly realized by a writer like Steven Levy. Kidder fails to impress in every way possible: as a journalist, a historian, a thinker, and a writer. I must ask, again, whence the Pulitzer?
A true journalistic classic. Buy it and Read it!.......2006-04-26
`The Soul of a New Machine' is a landmark journalistic book-length essay by then `Atlantic Monthly' writer, Tracy Kidder exploring the development of a new computer in those pre-microcomputer days of 1978. I am delighted to find this book issued as a `classic', as I have read it many times and have been meaning to do a review of it for some time. I cannot think of a better occasion than with the release of this new edition.
When it was first published, the book was a narrative of what was then `modern' technology, where the central processing units (CPU) or `brains' of commercial minicomputers and mainframe computers were built up on large circuit boards from individual, specialized integrated circuit chips, with each chip integrating dozens or hundreds of discrete components. This compares to today's microcomputers where the entire CPU is placed on a single chip incorporating tens of thousands of discrete functions, all taking up no more room than the average credit card. Now, the book is more a history of how this technology was developed, and yet its picture of how people work in teams developing technological projects will probably never go out of date.
The irony of this book is that the computer being developed by the team described in this book, a 32 bit Eclipse computer developed by the Data General corporation, a competitor to the larger and very successful Digital Computer Corporation (Digital), did not really achieve any major breakthrough in technology. While it was intended to compete with a new generation of Digital VAX machines, it ended up being just barely faster than VAX's in a few special tasks. In fact, in a conversation I once had with some Digital engineers, they said that when they went head to head with Data General in bidding for a computer sale, the only thing they had to do was bring out Kidder's book to demonstrate that the Data General box was yesterday's news. Data General may have had the last laugh, as ailing Digital was bought out by Compaq, which has since merged with H-P, further submerging the once great Digital presence in the commercial computer world. Meanwhile, Data General is still around, albeit not the presence it once had when the `minicomputer' was the great alternative to the IBM monoliths in the glass houses.
That does not detract from the fact that this is still a terrific story. I have read it several times and still quote from it after nearly thirty years of reading from it the first time. My favorite image is of the engineer who quit the project to become a farmer, so that the smallest unit of time he had to deal with was the season. My second favorite quote (which may not be original to this book, although this is the first time I ran into it) is that the management style on the project was the mushroom theory. That is, `Keep them in the dark and feed them s**t'.
As I see from Kidder's new introduction, this essay was a bigger accomplishment that it seemed originally, as Kidder was closer to being a Luddite than he was a techie in love with the latest computer tool which, at that time, would have been standalone word processing machines produced by companies such as IBM and Wang. In spite of that limitation, he manages to make it interesting to both the average reader and someone like myself who is (or at least was) familiar with the inner workings of computers.
I also tend to see Kidder's book as the fountainhead of a whole wave of new style journalistic book length works. I almost like to believe that Kidder made possible the writing careers of my foodie-writing hero, Michael Ruhlman (`The Soul of a Chef' and `The Making of a Chef'). The similarity in title of Ruhlman's book with Kidder's title is, I think, not an accident.
So, this is not only a history of a major moment in computer history, it is a superb picture of the dynamics of people in technical development teams and the challenges of achieving a technical goal.
Must read for everyone.
Surprised and pleased.......2006-03-01
I'd never heard of 'Soul' or Tracy Kidder or Tom West until my class with University of Phoenix. Something compelled me to purchase it and read it and I was very happy about it. It was a relatively fast read, technically informative but not too much so...and that's what I wanted. I wish there were more historical accounts of extraordinary things that have more diverse people in them. It was never mentioned but I'm pretty positive there wasn't a black person among that whole group. Black people are not 'let in' to those kinds of circle...special and extraordinary things; given an opportunity to stretch, given a chance to grow into something. Black people have to have 'credentials and experience' before a special project is even offered to us. I couldn't help but know - instinctively - that there were none. Good story though.

The World of Mobile Suits in a different light.......2003-08-13
Kevin Morrison delivers an exciting heart racing story. That is not comparable to other mobile suit books in print, simply because it is a different idea. To sum it up all up, this is Mobile Suit Action with a real plot and actual Idea, not just sensless fighting. The book illustrates this with unexpected plot twists and turns that led me to read it in an entire day. I hope this not the last book Mr. Morrison writes I am eager to read the next in this beautiful saga. Of course I cannot go into detail about the book, because I would actually spoil it for you, I want you to read it for yourself, trust me it is a very good read.

Interesting for techs and non-techs alike.......2007-03-12
Very interesting account of the development of a new computer system. Although the subject could be either mind-numbingly technical or superficial, the author avoids both traps by focusing on the interesting and quirky people involved and introducing technological concepts only as needed to support the material. This book is enjoyable for people at every stage of technological sophistication, but people who've been involved with new system development will appreciate the ironies more readily than people who have just used technology or non-techs.
A must-read for engineers and designers and their managers. Everyone else should give it serious consideration.
