Alan Alda's autobiography travels a path less taken. Instead of a sensationalist, name-dropping page-turner, Alda writes about his life as a memory play, an exercise in recollecting his childhood, his parents (dad Robert was a veteran on stage, film, and vaudeville), and his career. You want to know about Alda's most famous work, the eleven years on M*A*S*H? You have exactly 16 pages to do so, and guess what: It's one of the least entertaining parts of the book. But should fans of the award-winning actor-writer-director avoid this slim memoir? Not in the slightest. Slyly humorous and open-hearted, Never Have Your Dog Stuffed is a breezy, most enjoyable read. Alda's ability to recall his childhood (including backstage at raunchy vaudeville shows), school years, stage struggles and successes is as entertaining as one of his Emmy-winning teleplays. Alda is inordinately attune recalling life's crystallizing moments: when religion no longer worked for him, how something in his pocket made him forever a better actor, or his mother's painful descent into dementia. Alda's ever present humor is a great asset whether telling a charming love story on meeting his wife Arlene or a life-threatening illness in a remote part of Chile ("I am in and out of consciences, but I never take a break from the screaming. The show must go on."). Like Alda's persona, his book is more human and less flash. What would be filler in most books is often the mot entertaining and revealing here; especially Alda's dynamic relationship with his parents. Really, who else would name his memoir after an unfortunate trip to the taxidermist? The year the book was published during a revival for the 69-year-old; he was nominated for an Oscar, Emmy, and Tony in the same year. --Doug Thomas

Book Description

He’s one of America’s most recognizable and acclaimed actors–a star on Broadway, an Oscar nominee for The Aviator, and the only person to ever win Emmys for acting, writing, and directing, during his eleven years on M*A*S*H. Now Alan Alda has written a memoir as elegant, funny, and affecting as his greatest performances.

“My mother didn’t try to stab my father until I was six,” begins Alda’s irresistible story. The son of a popular actor and a loving but mentally ill mother, he spent his early childhood backstage in the erotic and comic world of burlesque and went on, after early struggles, to achieve extraordinary success in his profession.

Yet Never Have Your Dog Stuffed is not a memoir of show-business ups and downs. It is a moving and funny story of a boy growing into a man who then realizes he has only just begun to grow.

It is the story of turning points in Alda’s life, events that would make him what he is–if only he could survive them.

From the moment as a boy when his dead dog is returned from the taxidermist’s shop with a hideous expression on his face, and he learns that death can’t be undone, to the decades-long effort to find compassion for the mother he lived with but never knew, to his acceptance of his father, both personally and professionally, Alda learns the hard way that change, uncertainty, and transformation are what life is made of, and true happiness is found in embracing them.

Never Have Your Dog Stuffed, filled with curiosity about nature, good humor, and honesty, is the crowning achievement of an actor, author, and director, but surprisingly, it is the story of a life more filled with turbulence and laughter than any Alda has ever played on the stage or screen.

4 out of 5 stars A witty, fun peek into a nice guy's life.......2007-10-16

Written with much of the wit and humor so prominent in Alda's public persona, one gets an enjoyable peek into the man's life journey. A bit self-agrandizing at times (one might start to think that Alda can actually heal the sick in REAL LIFE - and hey, it's HIS book!), it's nonetheless a worthwhile, charming read probably best enjoyed by Alda's fans (of which, I am one), but recommended for anyone.

Grade: B+.

5 out of 5 stars Fun read!.......2007-10-10

What an enjoyable book. I really got a feel for who this guy is - as much as you can from a book. Very down to Earth and funny. Thanks Mr. Alda. What a great way to spend a couple of evenings.

5 out of 5 stars A real glimpse.......2007-10-09

This book was an inspiration to me because i felt that Alan Alda was being really honest in telling his story.

5 out of 5 stars Funny.......2007-09-12

I enjoyed reading this book. I enjoyed watching Alan Alda on M.A.S.H. and he is just as funny when it comes to his writing. I'm passing this book to all my friends.

5 out of 5 stars Too quick! I want more........2007-06-28

Ok, the title caught my attention. That and the info that Alda was able to view every child's dream behind the scenes of a vaudeville act. This book did offer quite a few surprises about how rough Alda's childhood was. He flew through many parts of his life that I wish he would have described more in-depth. Yet, Alda is very frank about his failings along with his success. He only mentions West Wing near the end of the book. I would have loved to hear a little more about his experiences on the show. I am looking forward to the next addition to his life's story.

3 out of 5 stars Careful! Bit of a juvenile read!.......2002-02-11

Just a bit of warning for purchasers of this book! This account almost appears like it was written for a juvenile audience. Indeed, the preface denotes hope that it will serve as an "inspiration to the youth of today". Hence, keep in mind this is not a very scholarly read - although a glossary of artillery terms and diagrams is very helpful. Nice starter text, but this effort by Mr Hassler wasn't quite what I wanted - nor expected.

      Book Description

When parents send their children off to college, mom and dad hope they'll return more cultivated, knowledgeable, and astute--able to see issues from all points of view. But, according to Ben Shapiro, there's only one view allowed on most college campuses: a rabid brand of liberalism that must be swallowed hook, line, and sinker. In this explosive book, Ben Shapiro, a college student himself, reveals how America's university system is one of the largest brainwashing machines on the planet. Examining this nationwide problem from firsthand experience, Shapiro shows how the leftists who dominate the universities--from the administration to the student government, from the professors to the student media--use their power to mold impressionable minds. Fresh and bitterly funny, this book proves that the universities, far from being a place for open discussion, are really dungeons of the mind that indoctrinate students to become socialists, atheists, race-baiters, and narcissists.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars College Isn't What It Used to Be.......2007-06-10

There is little doubt that America's colleges and universities have a leftist mindset that is used to teach only from one side of the political spectrum. So sure that this is the natural order of things that even their apologists argue that such a one world vision is the result of educational Darwinism--that those on the right simply choose to work in the world of business rather than in the world of ideas. In BRAINWASHED, Ben Shapiro explains how this mass indoctrination is as deeply entrenched as it is. Shapiro is a recent graduate and the memories of four years of Marxist, feminist, Hispanic, socialist, and environmentalist professors are permanently etched in his brain. And what he has personally witnessed forms the bulk of his book. He further refines his thesis by interviews with hostile professors who seem astounded when even one student has a contrary opinion. From the time that a student enters college as a freshman to the time that he graduates, Shapiro accuses that college of a deliberate act of groupthink mind control in which that student has been thoroughly inculcated in what now passes for a modern liberal education. Such a student will have a powerful tendency to accept any and all the following: the Democratic Party cares about the "little guy" while the Republican Party cares only for the wealthy industrialists; the War in Iraq is a total disaster and our troops deserve to suffer and die; gays not only have a right to come out of the closet, they expect all non-gays to view the world as their new closet; God does not have any impact on our daily lives nor in the lives of our Founding Fathers either; all students from kindergarten to grad school must be exposed to sex in the class and if they object, why then they are labeled as intolerant; it is permissible for Jews to be Jews (in the previous belief that it was ok for gays to be gays in the closet) but as soon as Jews speak up in defense of Israel, they are termed racist, anti-Moslem, and imperialist; and the curriculums of all colleges have been denuded of traditional courses to be replaced by Queer Theory, Feminist studies, and Marxism.

Shapiro uses extensive documentation to prove that his accusations are the norm and not the exception in America's colleges. He names hundreds of professors who are not bashful in their views that their leftist views are in fact mainstream while conservative views simply have no place anywhere on campus. My gut level reaction to Shapiro is that if anything he has understated the case. Most college students are totally unaware that their professors have abdicated their roles as impartial dispensers of truth. As such books like this one are desperately needed as a corrective. Yet I doubt that Ben Shapiro will be a name that will appear anytime soon on any syllabus.

1 out of 5 stars No substance at all.......2007-06-10

This book has no substance at all and seems very poorly researched. Many of the arguments the author makes clearly have no empirical basis at all. The fact that this was published mostly seems to be related to its polemic character and the political conflicts within which it situates itself. Reactionary propaganda and not worth reading at all.

5 out of 5 stars Being a new college grad, this book is 100% ACCURATE.......2007-03-12

It really just makes me sick how our education system is turning out. Shapiro does his best to uncover a lot of the indoctrination, but somehow I dont think many people will listen until its too late. Overall, its a great book and I really recommend it to anyone. I actually made copies of of the inside and cover, and plan on posting them all around campus. Thats sure to p*ss a few libs off!!

5 out of 5 stars Joining in the debate..........2007-03-06

I have not read this book, I'll say that first off, but I do understand Mr. Shapiro's general point. I have friends that identify with conservatism, and I personally have not sorted out my own political ideology. I hope to do so in college. My experience with college friends is that liberalism is more accepted. This is a shame. There should be more open intellectual discourse.

This should not turn into a liberal/conservative bashing war. Members of both groups make life difficult for each other at times. This does not mean everyone in each group is immature, or even that one group is more right or more wrong. The personalities of certain ideological adherents do not--or at least should not--taint the ideology itself. It is simply a matter of perspective. Ready? Everyone breathe. Everyone's perspective is right, it's just different. Tolerance can come on both ends, eh?

One reviewer said that Mr. Shapiro did not align himself with a political perspective in his book--an excellent ideal to strive for, and one that would strengthen his argument. However, Mr. Shapiro does not show tolerance or lack of political alignment in other publications. I was directed to reading up on this book through an article of his on the initiative in Washington to legalize procreation as a marriage requirement. "The Homosexual Assault on Traditional Marriage" sets up a totem pole that is a better fit for Shapiro's perspective than the one he encountered at UCLA. He assumes that all queer people are androgynous, which is not the case. Some are and some aren't; the queer population is very diverse in identity and perspective. He concludes gender differences must be strengthened in order "uphold the value of heterosexuality over homosexuality"--the very pecking-order, prejudiced mentality he was complaining about when it applied to his own views.

I suggest to Mr. Shapiro that he try being in a minority group for a lifetime, rather than for just four years, and in a group that has a much higher stigma attached to it than conservatism.

5 out of 5 stars This is real.......2007-01-31

This book hits the nail on the head. Liberals have taken over universities, forcing their agenda on conservative and/or Christian kids. Don't believe me? Wisconsin universities are now prohibiting Christian students from having a Bible study in their own dorm room and on their own free time. (Steiger v. Lord-Larson). Speech codes are in place across the U.S., forcing Christian student to abandon their faith at the door or be brandished a "narrow-minded, intolerant, bigot" by officials on the basis of campus speech codes. See Sklar v. Clough. Many universities also do not allow Christian students to limit their club leadership to Christian. And on, and on, and on. This is real, folks. Don't the let the libs try to tell you its not.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Large board book.......2001-07-19

First of all, check out the dimensions. This is a rather large board book. Each page has a simple picture (Bird Bird and little bird, Big Bird sitting in a nest, Big Bird on a see-saw with a few friends . . . ) and the text is quite simple, only one or two sentences per page. My 2-year old enjoys the book but it is a little unweildy because of it's size. It is, however, not very long, just a few pages. There really isn't a theme like in other books where they cover shapes, or colors, or bedtime. It's just a little narrative by Big Bird - birds have feathers, birds live in nests, I live in a big nest, some birds fly but I don't (he roller-skates). It's not destined to become a classic children's book but it has bright pictures of recognizable Sesame Street characters (including Bert, Ernie, and Zoe, among others) and an uncomplicated text.

In this book we have different pages with objects of different colors on them. On one page everything is red, on another page it is green. Big Bird describes something, and asks what is he thinking. The little one must guess. It is a good interactive book and one children enjoy guessing over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars A favorite of mother and son.......2003-03-20

When my son was born, I immediately began to look for Early Bird, but it seemed to be out of print. Luckily, my mother found my copy and it has become a favorite for a new generation! The simple humor captures the imagination of my son as much as it did mine. Typical of Scarry, there are so many different images to spark discussion. The illustration (pictured in the Amazon entry) of the family eating dinner alone provides endless opportunity to discuss foods, health, nutrition, etc. I HIGHLY recommend this book and I am so happy that it is back in print!

5 out of 5 stars revisiting own childhood.......2001-03-21

This was one of my favourite books as a young child and I am really pleased to be able to find a copy to give to my own daughter for her 2nd birthday. I think the pictures are great and the book has a good message about making friends. I still get a warm feeling when I think of this book.

        5 out of 5 stars Glad It's Back.......2000-04-10

"Early Bird" by Richard Scarey was my 25 year old son's favorite book as an infant. He delighted in learning the names of the different animals and in the story itself. Now that he's going to be a father I can think of no other book that he would like to treasure and share with his new baby. I am glad that it's back in print so I can send it to him as soon as possible so another generation can enjoy the delights that Early Bird brought him.

        Book Description

When a strange egg appears in their nest, Mr. and Mrs. Bird kindly take it upon themselves to raise the "baby bird" inside. But when the egg hatches, the Birds are in for a big surprise--"Junior" is the oddest-looking baby bird they've ever seen--with big, long jaws full of teeth and an appetite to match. In fact, he looks more like a baby alligator than a baby bird! Nevertheless, the devoted Birds run themselves ragged feeding Junior until he gets so big, he must leave the nest or it will collapse underneath him. But how can Junior fly without wings? To the delight of the Birds--and readers!--the dilemma is solved when Junior takes off from a branch overlooking a pond.

        5 out of 5 stars Children's book/cute story line.......2007-07-26

This book has a very cute story line.
My daughter was especially intrigued by this book because we often talk about birds and have even watched a few build their nests outside.
It also has a good story about what birds eat....to help children envision what birds feed to their young.
Very well written and great for beginner readers.

5 out of 5 stars Very cute book!.......2005-12-28

Boy, is this ever cute! when a little boy puts an alligator egg in the Birds' nest, they take care of it as if it was their own. They sit on it until it hatches then when he does, they feed it constantly! It's funny watching an alligator eating all that "bird food" and still grows huge. The end is particularly nice. They decide it's time for "Junior" to learn to fly but instead, he learns to swim. Sure is a cute story - especially on caring for others. Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars funny and teachs kids good life lesson .......2005-08-14

This is a favorite of my daycare kids. When Mr. and Mrs. Bird discover a strange egg in their nest they try to hatch it. Mr. Bird is a delight to read. He says through the whole book it doesn't matter if it's not their egg, they still take care of it, it doesn't matter if baby alligator doesn't look like them, they still need to feed it. It doesn't matter if the baby alligator can't fly because he's happy in the water. I can't praise the book more. It's a fun easy read.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for parents of adopted children.......2004-08-22

I checked out the book at a local library, and ended up adding the book to my collection. It's a beautiful and touching story that the parents of adopted chilren must have it.

5 out of 5 stars Flap Your Wings.......2001-06-27

I am thrilled to find this book back in print. Our family received a paperback edition many years ago as a gift. We have read it literally to pieces. Since receiving this gift, we have added three children to our family through international adoption. Like the bird family, we don't look alike, but we share the same nest. My husband and I live by Mr. Bird's philosophy, "If an egg is in your nest, you sit on it and keep it warm." Our answer to nosy questions concerning one of our children - "He's in our nest, so he must be ours."

We are now entering a new phase of parenting. The first of our 6 children is moving out to begin life on her own. Once again Mr. Bird in his wisdom has given us direction: "It's getting too crowded up here. Junior has to leave the nest. It is time for him to fly away...We must show him how to fly." Of course our pride matches Mr. Bird as we watch her go, "(S)he's happy now! Just watch (her) swim" or fly or soar.

Flap Your Wings is a classic. It celebrates love, family, differences, attachment, and letting go. Thank you P.D. Eastman for your fabulous book. I will read it for years to come.
