The lives of Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman are classic underdog stories. Both of these "obscure failures" experienced more disappointment than success prior to the start of the Civil War. By 1861, they had each resigned from the U.S. Army and failed in several civilian pursuits between them, including farming, real estate, retail, and banking. Further, Grant was known as a drunk and Sherman was labeled insane. But once they threw themselves into the war effort, their best traits and talents began to reveal themselves. Even their motives were similar--both men joined the war not to eradicate slavery but to hold the Union together, believing that secession was equal to treason. This dual biography gracefully reveals how the two men grew to be "as brothers," why their partnership proved essential to victory for the Union, and how well they complemented and helped each other in their lives and careers, despite some major differences. For instance, though he possessed tremendous talent, Sherman was insecure and initially asked Abraham Lincoln never to give him a superior command. Grant, on the other hand, never doubted his ability to lead, and he quickly, if quietly, moved up the chain of command. Once he recognized Sherman's abilities, Grant made sure to keep him close, and they grew to depend upon each other completely. Through their near-daily interaction, even when separated by distance, both men honed their skills and eventually came up with a winning strategy for the war, which they executed in a brilliant two-pronged assault.
The book also discusses Grant's and Sherman's marriages, their relationships with their soldiers, and their dealings with politicians to provide well-rounded and complete portraits of these fascinating leaders. Grant and Sherman is a thoughtful portrait of the two men who "other than Lincoln... would have more to do with winning the war that preserved the Union than anyone else." --Shawn Carkonen
Book Description
They were both prewar failures—Grant, forced to resign from the Regular Army because of his drinking, and Sherman, holding four different jobs, including a much-loved position at a southern military academy—in the years before the firing on Fort Sumter. They began their unique collaboration ten months into the war, at the Battle of Shiloh, each carefully taking the other's measure. They shared the demands of family life and the heartache of personal tragedy. They shared similar philosophies of battle, employed similar strategies and tactics, and remained in close, virtually daily communication throughout the conflict. They were incontestably two of the Civil War's most important figures, and the deep, abiding friendship they shared made the Union's ultimate victory possible.
Poignant, riveting, and elegantly written, Grant and Sherman is a remarkable portrait of two extraordinary men and a singular friendship, forged on the battlefield, that would change the course of history.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent view of two generals.......2007-07-08
This is an excellent read with excellent insights into the personalities and temperments of the two great Union generals in the Civil War. The personal observations shared between Grant and Sherman show how much of the strategy of 1864 was a combination of the minds of these two military giants.
Silly title and premise, but good content.......2007-06-17
Flood gives the reader sound accounts of Grant and Sherman's Civil War biographies, insight into Army politics, and a glimpse of several battles with a readable and entertaining prose. He chronicles the rise of Grant and Sherman from arguable failures to their rise as Civil-War heroes.
I enjoyed the accounts of the battles, although they cannot be considered anything close to comprehensive, as they concentrated solely on how those events affected the lives of the main characters. While the book contains maps of the battles, there were only a few and placed before the Prologue and not referred to in the text. I found the analysis of Grants and Sherman's hesitancy and inaction at Chattanooga to be very interesting, along with the jealously from Thomas and Hooker - both of whom seemed to get short shrift due to Grant's favoritism of Sherman. I thought Flood provided good coverage of the confusion and dysfunction in the Cabinet and Army after Lincoln's death. He provided excellent detail of Sherman's screw-up of surrender talks with Johnston - the most complete account I have read thus far.
In regards to the book's premise, while Flood captures some genuinely interesting and sincere interaction between the two, the premise that their friendship "won the war" is preposterous. Nor does he make the argument that their friendship itself was great. They barely knew each other prior to the war, and their partnership during the war lasted less than two years, and there did not appear to be consistent interaction after the war. The concept seems rather contrived, as with every chapter the author makes out-of-context note of someone's comment on their friendship, such as their interactions were "free, affectionate, and good humored", "the friendship was there for all to see", or "their encounter was more like that of two school boys coming together after vacation".
In describing a post war parade, he says "There it was: the apotheosis of the friendship and military partnership that had brought the Union and its armies to this day. They were the men, the two generals, who more than other soldiers had made this moment happen, and everyone there knew it."
I enjoyed the historical accounts and insights on their relationship, and a few details on the two I had not known much about, but I found the insinuation of a magical friendship to be rather a veiled attempt to spit out supposedly new material on a very crowded subject.
the destiny of two men..........2007-01-30
Grant and Sherman had such an incredible relationship as outlined in this book by Mr Flood, it is not hard to imagine that that relationship was a decisive factor in the Civil War. After Lee had lost some of his most trsuted commanders (Stonewall), the Union Army found it's leaders and purpose. This is a fascinating book for those who are Civil Wars buffs or not, a wonderful American tale.
We are as brothers........2007-01-29
Grant and Sherman: The Friendship That Won the Civil War by Charles Bracelen Flood examines the relationship between the two great generals. It provides much information, but little of it new, on the two individuals. It shows as Sherman is quoted, "that we are as brothers."
The book gives the background of each man and his family prior to the outbreak of the Civil War. I enjoyed the coverage given of Grant's and Sherman's relationships with friends, family members, and their wives. The book shows the chemistry and respect the two have for each other. The book shows Grant as the commander and Sherman as the subordinate who managed to achieve loyalty and mutual respect. Neither would have been as great or accomplished nearly as much without the other.
The book could have been titled from failure to success as it explains how each man came to his responsibilities in the US Army. I enjoyed seeing the relationship between the two develop. We see it grow as they had a nominal knowledge of each from their West Point days where Sherman was two years ahead of Grant to where Sherman's presence encourages Grant while he is writing his memoirs.
The book achieves its point of showing they had a friendship. I remember examples at Fort Henry where Sherman was supplying Grant with what he needed even though Sherman had date of rank on Grant. Sherman and Grant talking at Shiloh were Sherman was ready to retreat and regroup and Grant to advance on the second day. Sherman encourages Grant not to leave after Major General Halleck takes field command of the Army from Grant following Shiloh. The Corinth Campaign, Military governorship of Memphis, Vicksburg Campaign, Grant in charge of the entire US Army, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Atlanta, Savannah, Columbia, and on to Raleigh for Sherman as well as the Wilderness, Petersburg, fall of Richmond and finally Appomattox for Grant. Their clear strategy in Sherman's words: "He was to go for Lee and I was to go for Joe Johnston."
The chapter on Sherman in trouble was very interesting as it gave the most in depth record I personally have read of the controversy surrounding Johnston's surrender to Sherman. We see how Grant has Sherman's back and helps him through this time.
It is a relatively short work of just over 400 pages. It was an enjoyable read. Read and reviewed by Jimmie A. Kepler
Interesting but not completely satisfying.......2006-08-26
As other reviews note, this book is marred by some errors (e.g., it was not Grant who abrogated Kentucky's neutrality; most works I have read credit The Bishop General, Polk, with that accomplishment). It also promises more in the subtitle than it can deliver ("The Friendship That Won the Civil War"). I just don't see the case made that their friendship led to victory. It was hardly irrelevant, of course, but the subtitle's claim sets a high standard to meet.
However the performance of generals such as George Thomas suggests that others could as well have been the hammer in the West after Grant's accession to control of all of the Union armies. And Thomas' record before Sherman became the top general in the west could be said to be no worse than Sherman's (in fact, Buell's "Warrior Generals" argues that Thomas was one of the best of all Union generals and was never given full credit; while the argument is not, in the final analysis, fully convincing, one cannot downgrade Thomas' contributions to the North).
Many of the stories and events here are quite familiar to readers of Civil War history. And there is rather less on the battlefield events than might have been called for.
Nonetheless, in the end, this is a good analysis of the friendship between Grant and Sherman and how it did help them to mesh their strategic efforts.

Book Description
A research analyst for the Center for Naval Analyses offers a rare historical account of the Royal and U.S. Navies' involvement in one of the greatest amphibious assaults of modern history. It is a story of cooperation and, at times, discord, between the two navies as they planned the naval portion of the Allied invasion of Normandy. With the evolution of amphibious warfare as a backdrop, the book has sufficient technical detail to satisfy the modern-day practitioner of amphibious warfare, yet is written in a style that makes it accessible to the general public.
Thoroughly researched at the U.S. National Archives and the Naval Historical Center, the book takes the reader from the initial plans created by the Anglo-American Allies in 1942, through the first draft of Operation Overlord, to the final naval plan set down in 1944. It then presents a detailed description of the invasion itself. Christopher Yung covers every obstacle confronted by the naval planners, from the shifting tides of the English Channel to overcoming the European coastal defenses and dealing with the submarine threat. Despite his attention to historical detail, he brings to life the personalities of those who brought Operation Neptune from concept to reality.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, but requires a military background .......2007-09-13
My husband enjoyed the book very much, but said anyone who reads it would need to have a military background (which he has) to comprehend it fully. It has a lot of references to rank and tactical terms.
An Excellent Treatment of a Difficult Subject.......2006-07-23
Gators of Nepture provides a look at the background, conception, planning, organization, and execution of the D-Day landings. It actually treats the subject on several levels.
To begin with, there is a comprehensive examination of the technical and logistical aspects of the operation, which remains the most complex landing ever undertaken. So we learn a great deal about the supply of landing craft, arrangements for naval escorts and gunfire support, the intricate planning necessary to mesh operations by naval, air, and ground forces, and more, including lots on training (with a good concise discussion of Slapton Sands).
But Yung, a seasoned naval analyst, didn't stop there. He frames the tale by examining the evolution of both British and American amphibious doctrine, which differed in important ways, requiring complex negotiation among the commanders and their staffs to hammer out a common doctrine. In dealing with this aspect of the planning, we are treated to some critical portraits of many of the leading figures on both sides. This is in many ways the most valuable part of the book. By looking at the planning for D-Day through the experiences, personalities, ambitions, and inter-relationships of the principal commanders - Bertram Ramsay, Andrew Cunningham, Harold Stark, Philip Vian, Alan Kirk, and others - Yung turns what could easily have been a very dry, even boring technical account of operational planning and logistical management into a very readable work.
Gators of Nepture is likely to be of particular interest to students of World War II in Europe, amphibious operations, and naval history in general.
A remarkable view of the planning for the day of days.......2006-07-12
Few people know about Operation Neptune, the naval portion of the D-Day invasion. Chris Yung does a great job of sifting through myriad sources to weave a tapestry of the Allied naval planning.
A must-read for history buffs, even casual ones.
History Comes Alive.......2006-06-16
Christopher Yung provides a stunning analysis of Operation Neptune, from it's inception to it's culmination. His attention to historical facts is exceptional. The enormaity of this amphibious operation is mind-blowing. He really captures the cooperation and the discord between the Allied Forces. An excellent read.
Book Description
Corporations rule the world, claims Thom Hartmann, and they are despoiling it for profit. He traces the historical friction between individual rights and the corporation, culminating in a landmark 1886 court case that altered the course of constitutional protection forever. Since then, corporations have steadily acquired power, enrolled the average citizen in a new kind of servitude, shifted an unfair share of the tax burden, taken control of the media, and co-opted the regulatory process for their own purposes. Hartmann cites examples of the absurd and frightening power: sterile streams and undrinkable water, poisonous neighborhoods, a government's willingness to drill for oil in untouched Alaskan wilderness when saving 2 miles per gallon per car would produce more oil in 2 years than in all of Alaska. To end the abuses, Hartmann calls for a grassroots revolution. He says it's time to understand the true costs of our consumerist society, take back the government, and shift to a values-based economy.

Corporate Power, where did it come from? .......2007-07-13
I was actually in the process of writing a book about the same subject matter when I became aware of Mr. Hartmann's book. After reading this book I conclude that Mr. Hartmann beat me to it and has done a more thorough job than would have satisfied me. It is a very important matter and threatens to change our nation in fundamental ways. A shortcoming in Mr. Hartmann's book is the weakness of his proposed solutions. I have proposed to Mr. Hartmann actions which I think would be more effective in the long haul. I am searching for an existing organization having the sole goal of putting back in their place those corporations which are usurping the power given We the People by the Constitution. I'm too old to form a new orgnization and those I have learned of are not sufficiently focused.
This book changed my life.......2007-05-10
I read this book and have been a Thom Hartman fan ever since.
He is brilliant and packed with knowledge.
Everyone needs to read this book!
Check out his radio show.
Gives the insde on the need to rationalize corporations.......2007-04-08
Going into the Freedom Portal (Free State) I had doubts about the morality, perhaps even the constitutionality, of corporations.
What, after all, is a corporation?
American Heritage says: "a) A body of persons granted a
charter legally recognizing them as a separate entity having
its own rights, privileges, and liabilities distinct from those
of its members. b) Such a body created for purposes of
government."
Now isn't the b) part of that definition interesting? At the very least we know corporations are creatures of the government and do not exist at common law.
Thomas Hartmann, a true modern lower-case democrat, writes that Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, and several other Founders warned strenuously against monopoly corporations:
"I hope we shall... crush in its birth the aristocracy of our moneyed corporations, which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength and bid defiance to the laws of our country." --Thomas Jefferson to George Logan, 1816
And from Andrew Jackson:
"Corporations have neither bodies to kick nor souls to damn."
These conscientious men were worried about abuse of power. Early chartering of corporations in America reflects this concern, often imposing severe limitations--such as prohibiting corporations from owning other corporations and requiring annual renewal of the charters.
Many people do not realize the Boston Tea Party was a revolt against corporate privilege. Queen Elizabeth charted the East India Company (EIC) in 1600; into the 1700s it dominated trade by Britain with America. Tea became a huge import to America by the mid-1700s and EIC wanted all the business.
Several acts prohibited Americans from acquiring tea from other sources. In 1773, the Tea Act exempted EIC (of which the king was a stockholder), but not colonial merchants, from taxes to the crown. The tea partiers were telling the Crown and the EIC stick their cheap tea where the sun don't shine.

Unequal Protection:the rise of corporate Dominance and the Theft of Human Rights.......2006-11-10
A call to all fair minded Americans, as well as citizens around the globe.
One of Thom Hartmann's BEST. A history lesson and a call to reclaim our humanity.
'The' book to read on the issue of the role of corporate power in the US.......2006-04-30
Disclaimer: I'm a bit more than half through the book - and ready to comment on it.
I read quite a few books on liberal politics. This one is on a very short 'best' list of them.
It hits its mark right on - just the right amounts of history, the scope of its message, the gritty details when needed, the pacing.
I began to learn new details on well-trodden ground early in the book - for example, who knew that the pilgrims arriving on the Mayflower in 1620 were hardly England beginning its presence in North America - that it was the Mayflower's third or fourth trip carrying over staff of the East India company since 1601 - it was a company presence, the religious visitors were an afterthought.
He does an outstanding job of explaining the dominant role of colonists' opposition to the East India company in our own resolution. It's important to understand these things when we look at how to respond to powerful corporations today.
He does an excellent, balanced expose of the history of the legal doctrine that corporations are entitled to equality with humans.
The ramifications are huge, as today we face a political system in which the influence of our citizens is dwarfed by that of the inhuman organizations - where the citizens are turned into consumers to be sold to and manipulated with well-funded marketing, rather than acting as the sovereigns necessary for a democracy to work well.
If we don't begin to do something now, the chances may begin to disappear to be able to. Even now, we have democracy's power to represent its people castrated by clauses in the so-called 'free trade' agreements which allow the corporations to get all kinds of laws nullified.
I highly recommend the book.

Wonderful.......2006-06-10
I will be honest with everyone. When i first got started in real estate i was using plain jane documents and leases. I mainly deal with lease options and selling them on owner fiance. So when i checked his site out and saw a collection of the same documents matthew uses. I knew i had to pick this up. This is a great collection because he takes it a step further. Matthew actually shows you how to fill them out. So many investors just leave you with blank documents. Matthew also includes a audio cd wich explains each document step by step. Within this collection is also the most powerful document one can have. A relase from the lease document that is a must need. Once again another great book by matthew chan. THese documents are actually being used by me in my daily real estate activities. While i have edited them and changed them to fit my business. These are great baseline documents that will help any new investor. So if yo deal in lease options, then you have to check this collection of contracts out.
- Full & Complete - Lease Option Doc Collection! Nothing Else Needed!.......2005-11-26
The Author had done a superb job collating all the documents you may ever need if you ever do (or are doing) Lease Options. Everything from the `Lease and the actual Option paperwork to `Move Out & Abandonment policy' to the `Property Inspection Document'.
Along with the Documents the Author has included a demo document that has been filled out. This gives you a term of reference and doesn't leave you hanging (so you don't have to guess what goes where).
This package also contains a CD with not only the documents (so you can print them off (you won't have to photocopy them) AND Edit them (add your logo and/or customise the docs to your area), but also an audio focusing on each document. The audio is done by the author and his manager and so they talk about each document from their own viewpoint and their wealth of experience.
Lastly due to the number of houses the Author has bought he has had to go to court to remove non-payers. He uses these documents adn so you know these documents have stood up in a court of law, so rather than doing them yourself (and have the risk of it being deemed not acceptable), if you buy these, in my mind your sleep easy factor will be much better!
This really is a great package. Very impressed with it!
