The roots of alcoholism in the life of a brilliant daughter of an upper-class family are explored in this stylistic, literary memoir of drinking by a Massachusetts journalist. Caroline Knapp describes how the distorted world of her well-to-do parents pushed her toward anexoria and then alcoholism. Fittingly, it was literature that saved her: She found inspiration in Pete Hamill's A Drinking Life and sobered up. Her tale is spiced with the characters she's known along the way.
Book Description
Fifteen million Americans a year are plagued with alcoholism. Five million of them are women. Many of them, like Caroline Knapp, started in their early teens and began to use alcohol as "liquid armor," a way to protect themselves against the difficult realities of life. In this extraordinarily candid and revealing memoir, Knapp offers important insights not only about alcoholism, but about life itself and how we learn to cope with it.

Inside Information.......2007-10-05
This book is so well written, and is so honest and informative, it is perhaps the most compelling (and useful) story about addiction I've ever read. Caroline Knapp, an Ivy-League educated columnist and editor, shares the story of her slide into alcoholism and her road to recovery with brutal honesty. Her down-to-earth, conversational tone pulls you in, and paints a very credible picture of someone who goes beyond the singular, self-serving notion of merely writing a memoir. Recovery has brought out the best in her, and her writing is filled with gratitude and a deep sense of caring for the health of all those around her with or without addiction issues.
The love story metaphor plays all the way through and works well. I particularly liked the way she continues the analogy through her recovery and labels her relationship with alcohol "a divorce." She not only divorced alcohol, for the first year she "took out a restraining order," and avoided "alcohol the way you'd avoid running into an ex-lover at a restaurant."
Some of us have a difficult time understanding the disease of alcoholism and, more to the point, what goes on in the mind of an alcoholic or addict that keeps him/her on this self-destructive path. Knapp lays it bare. She comes across as someone you would want to know.
I recommend this book for anyone interested in understanding the nature of both the active alcoholic and the recovering alcoholic. These pages are like a 280+ AA meeting, offering insight, understanding--even comfort--and most importantly, honesty.
Well done.

Absorbing, raw, realistic, view........2007-08-30
I have read and re-read this book many times. This was the first (and still the best) non fiction book I have read about a first hand account on alcoholism. I really cared about the author, who struggles as a functioning alcoholic .Sadly Caroline Knapp died 5 years ago. A must read for anyone who is touched by the disease of alcoholism.
Every woman and man should read this book.......2007-08-23
Caroline Knapp is a gift from the universe to us all. She has the best perspective on appetites and needs. She understands the human condition fully and I believe in my heart her book can help everyone. The world is at a tremendous loss for loosing her at such and early age. If you know anyone with a drinking problem or have one yourself you must read this book. This woman and her words are a life saver. Bless her for the good she did while she was on this earth.
Drinking: A Love Story.......2007-05-30
I thought this book was a beautiful and honest portrayal of the progressiveness and destructiveness of the disease of alcoholism, especially as experienced by a woman. As a substance abuse counselor, it is not often that you come upon stories of alcoholism in women from upper-middle class, well-educated and highly respected families, or at least those that are nationally shared. I applaud Caroline Knapp for providing us with an inside view of alcoholism and the havoc it wreaks on the lives of many. It is a shame that she did not live to tell us her story beyond her first year of sobriety.
Drinking: A love story.......2007-05-12
Having lived with an alcoholic husband for years and never quite understanding the "why", I found this book very interesting. It answered many of my questions. Although it is an easy "chatty" read, it has taken me forever to read as I find that I read a bit and then digest and apply it to my situation. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to get inside an alcoholic's head.

hard to put this book down.......2006-09-27
I used to fly with Capt. Grunke. He is an excellent pilot, a great teacher, and an inspiring professional to fly with. This book was a great read, and hard to put down. It brings to light the stresses, problems, fun times, and sometimes bad times we all go through in this career as airline pilots. It is a career that has an image of travel, adventure, and glamour. It is also a career full of stresses and problems at home because of all of the travel, and separation from our families. That is the part of this career that most people don't see. The personal sacrifice.
It gives an insight into the mind that many of us that have chosen this career can relate to. It is a "sobering" reminder of how easy it could be to cross the line, violate the trust we have been given as professionals. And how quickly you can lose everything. It is a reminder that problems in life can be overcome.
Wife of a Pilot.......2003-10-13
I recently purchased and read your book. You flew with my husband and I thought it would give me insight into the life of a pilot(having been married to one for 15 years) I thoroughly enjoyed your book and could not put it down. What an interesting career you have had.
I commend you for putting your thoughts and your incredible life story into print.
You write so eloquently and paint pictures with words so well.
Your story just may help other pilots who have led a life of drinking as to how quickly a lifetime career could come to a halt too soon.
Thanks for your insight. I wish you luck in the future.
A look at a Piolet/ Drinkers life.......2003-09-01
I never knew that my father had this gift of writing. Infact this book helped me to understand him and see him in a way that I had never been able to experience. I believe that this book has brought us (my father, brother, and I) closer. I recommend this book to anyone. It's a book that you WILL NOT be able to put down. It looks at how drinking can effect a human being, even those with jobs like my fathers, where he was in charge of hundreds of lives at one time. I believe that many will be able to relate to the life that he has lived, and the stories that he tells in this book. Along with the hardships of drinking he also adds the many humorous stories that he told my bother and I as children growing up. I have let many people read copies of this book, from friends to co workers and all have asked for more than just the little I let them read. Trust me the book is good and you'll love it.

Book Description
Friedrich Beck was the single most important figure in the transformation of the inept Habsburg military into the modern military state that would wage World War I. He correctly perceived that only an elite body of officers responsible for war planning and preparation could provide lasting security for the Austro-Hungarian empire. After firmly establishing the general staff as an institution, Beck led war planning to counter threats from Russia, Italy, and the Balkans; and spearheaded a vast rebuilding of the rail network. While his rise to power marked a return to the "favorite system" of military administration of the early Franz Joseph period, Beck proved himself a man with real military ability that revolutionized an army.

The Rebirth of the Habsburg Army.......2000-04-03
This in excellent edition on the development of the Austro-Hungarian Army before the First World war. The author's exhaustive research comes through in this thorough and almost faultless study. Highly recommmended for any historian in this field.
Book Description
What happens when a president violates the U.S. Constitution, resulting in the deaths of thousands? In Warrior-King, public interest lawyer John Bonifaz argues passionately that Bush did just that when he launched a first-strike invasion of Iraq without a congressional declaration of war. The framers of the Constitution, he argues, wanted to ensure that our presidents would not be like European kings of old who could decide, on their own volition, to send their subjects into battle. Only the Congress can send this nation into war—George Bush is not a king. In February 2003 Bonifaz and a coalition of U.S. citizens, soldiers, and members of Congress sued the president and Defense Secretary Rumsfeld, seeking to prevent an undeclared and illegal war. The courts heard the case on an expedited basis, but ruled that they were barred from deciding it on the grounds that it raised a “political question” to be addressed only by the political branches. It didn't matter that the president might trample on the Constitution—the judiciary would only stand on the sidelines and watch. Bonifaz argues that if we are to preserve our Constitution, we must now act: We must call for George Bush's impeachment.
Customer Reviews:
An Objective Look at a Very Plausible Idea.......2005-06-18
Certainly there have been no allegations of George W. Bush having an affair. However, what John Bonifaz is able to do in this explosive book, is detail a strong case for the impeachment and removal of Bush as President for real and tangible Constitutional issues. In fact, it makes the impeachment of Bill Clinton seem trivial and silly. There is no telling how many people have died as a result of the "illegal" war that President Bush started. The conservatives have always prided themslves on being strict constructionists, well, if that is the case, then Bonifaz is really on to something here.
Confronting Constitutional Questions.......2004-05-25
John Bonifaz was part of the legal process in seeking to impeach Bush, confronting critical constitutional issues in that process. In failing to meet the criteria established by elements of the international community, Bush bypass UN approval in his haste for war.
Bush stated the importance of going to war as what he and advisers termed a preemptive action, a necessity in the face of a clear and present danger from an aggressive enemy. In choosing to act on his own rather than allowing the UN weapons inspection team finish its work, and relying on a false claim that Iraq's Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction, Bush threw open the distinct possibility of an impeachment action.
The U.S. is obligated to follow laws and processes to which it has committed itself, namely the UN Charter and the Geneva Accords, and to fail to do so means more than a violation of international law. Such an act is violative of the U.S. Constitution since a president is mandated to follow the laws to which the nation is committed. Bonifaz and fellow petitioners contend that this failure leaves Bush open to removal from office.
Richard Nixon resigned from office after being impeached and facing a Senate trial for removal. He was previously found guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors by the House of Representatives. A good case can be made that Bush, by rushing to war and not allowing inspections to be completed, violated the law and distorted the facts by insisting that that which had not been proven, namely that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction, compelled him to go to war in the interest of American safety.
The more the issue has been studied the more compelling the evidence has become that Iraq under Saddam Hussein was only a shell of the military threat it formerly posed. Did Bush and his close advisers not know this? If so, by what rationale could it commit American troops to war?
Love the idea of impeachment, hated this book.......2004-05-10
Let me start by saying nobody would enjoy the idea of impeachment more than me. But, this book fails to come close to making the case.
The point of the book is Bush's actions were bad, he acted like a King, the Constitution was set up to avoid the abuses of a King, therefore war in Iraq was unconstitutional. Out of 155 pages, there was some material that could be cut and pasted together to get a few pages worth of sound bites. Those would be really good sound bites, but there is a big difference between sound bites and substance. And this book was nothing in terms of the latter.
From the view of partisanship, I have no problem with Bush is bad, his actions were bad, therefore let's declare this unconstitutional. But, from the view of the Constitution, we need more than that. There are books that make a far better case for impeachment. Books like Worse Than Watergate are among them. This one only makes the case that a bad argument makes a bad book, regardless of how good the title is.
I never imagined that a book with that kind of title would result a negative endorsement from me. But, that's how poor this one was.
And, just to show how all there is a little bit of sound bites, the title represents another one. There is no mention at all about impeachment in this book.
Don't Remember King George of England? We'll Create Our Own.......2004-02-04
Every American should read two thin books about Iraq: "The Five Biggest Lies Bush Told Us About Iraq" by Christopher Scheer, Robert Scheer, and Lakshmi Chaudhry, and "Warrior King: the Case for Impeaching George W. Bush" by John Bonifaz with forward by Congressman John Conyers.
The first book exposes the lies that President Bush and members of his Administration knowingly told during the build-up to the war on Iraq, including the lies that are keeping US troops in Iraq today.
The second book addresses Bush's unconstitutional act of taking the US military to war without a declaration of war by Congress. A number of US soldiers and US Congress Members sued the President in a failed attempt to prevent this war, and this book lays out the case.
Regardless of Your Views On the War in Iraq, Read this Book.......2004-02-02
Regardless of your views about the War in Iraq, John Bonifaz's Warrior-King is a must read. Bonifaz presents a concise, compelling case for why Bush's and Congress's actions with respect to the War were so dangerous. Rather than focusing on the merits of the War itself, Bonifaz explains why the methods employed to bring our nation into War are so objectionable. He forces readers to take a step back and view our government's actions in a historical framework. After reading the book, readers will have a deeper understanding of the far-reaching implications of our government's actions.
Unlike other authors who solely provide written social commentary, Bonifaz is a man of action. Outraged by our government's behavior, amazingly Bonifaz organized a coalition of individuals - from Congressmen to soldiers to soldiers' parents - to bring a law suit against our President. Through Warrior-King, the reader has the unique opportunity to get an insider's perspective into the legal case waged against our President. All readers, including supporters of the War, will finish Bonifaz's book with an appreciation for the gravity of our most powerful leaders' actions leading up to the War.
Bonifaz's book cannot prevent the deaths that have already occurred in Iraq, but it can inspire us to demand that our future leaders take seriously their constitutional obligations before entering our nation into another world conflict.

Pigeons Are Valuable Assets........2005-09-09
The origins of the modern-day racing pigeon can be traced thousands of years. There were records and carvings of Rock Doves dating from 3,000 B.C. Even Noah took aboard his Ark two doves. They are the ancestors of today's pigeons, the lovely, bright gentle birds.
Throughout history, the pigeon had been used by Asian And European civilizations as a speedy and reliable carrier of messages. They were used during the war by the British.
When the first marathon runner gained victory in the Olympic Games at Pisa in AD230, he sent the new home via his hen bired (a pigeon), which he had taken with him. This book is illustrated throughout and the subject of training pigeons, both yound and old, is explained in depth.
Racing Pigeons by David Glover.......2003-01-26
This is a good book with good information. The book was received in excellent condition (new) and in a very timely manner.
Racing Pigeons by David Glover.......2002-11-27
I have raised pigeons for over 45 years and have read most everything avaiable about them, This book is a very good one and has lots of pictures that give the reader a clear picture of what he is describing in the text. There are not many good books on the racing side of the sport so this one should be welcomed. I would highly recommend it to anyone that has an interest in learning more about raising or racing pigeons.
My new bible!.......2001-10-28
An amazing book! Excellent. Brilliant. Inspired. This book is brimming with wit and humor and is a wonderful example of the genius that sprouts out of the European people on occasion. A book like this is as rare as they come... Glover and Beaumont are surely paving the way for a new breed of comedy. Keep an eye out... this book is sure to win a Pulitzer. I can only hope to hear more from these outrageous new authors in the future. Truly!
Book Description
The seventh delightful mystery starring community college professor Bel Barret, the sleuth that the Baldwin City Ledger calls, "Evanovich's Stephanie Plum twenty–five years later."
Fifty–something community college professor and amateur sleuth Bel Barrett is at it again. When Dom Tomaselli, a student from her memoir–writing class for senior citizens, shows up dead, she agrees to investigate whether his fall from a rooftop was an accident––or murder. But with her aged mother so depressed that she can't even make her weekly trips to Atlantic City, and with her wedding to her boyfriend Sal coming up, she hardly has time for anything, let alone sleuthing. So with the help of Dom's daughter Flora, Bel determines that Dom's inveterate gambler brother–in–law, who owed him money, is the primary suspect. But could an extortion plot and a long–ago arson case also be central to the old man's demise? With the help of her best pals from the community college, Bel weaves together the different strands of one of the most baffling cases she's ever seen...and discovers that the history of her beloved Hoboken is far more sordid than she'd ever imagined.

Hot on the Trail.......2007-03-30
I have read the entire series and loved it funny, engaging and keeps you reading till the end. The book arrived quickly and in great condition.
A Most Satisfying Read.......2005-10-27
"Hot on the Trail" fulfills all the criteria for a satisfying read: characters with distinct and engaging personalities, a suspect-filled plot that develops intriguing byways, witty dialogue to move the story forward while deepening the reader's understanding of the dynamics among the story's cast. While these characteristics are highly enjoyable in all of Jane Isenberg's delightful Bel Barrett series, "Hot on the Trail" also successfully and empathetically explores the processes of aging, cultural alterations, and the many definitions of family. Isenberg's selection of pigeon racing as a crucial background element of the story adds interesting detail that also illuminates some ingredients of a murder. An evening spent with "Hot on the Trail" offers many satisfactions, whether or not you have met Bel Barrett and company before. Enjoy!
A perfect plane book.......2005-10-18
Hot on the Trail is an upbeat, fun read that brings me back to Hoboken, all those pigeons, two dead bodies, and that special brand of NJ politics! Finally, Bel and Sol get married and what a neat surprise the wedding is. Take this book on your next flight and enjoy!
Disappointing.......2005-03-01
Hot On The Trail is the eighth book in Jane Isenberg's Bel Barrett mystery series. Bel Barrett is a women in her fifties who works as a New Jersey community college professor. In this instalment she gets more than expected (but not really) when she agrees to teach an extra evening writing class for seniors.
Like previous instalments someone dies; in this case it turns out to be one of her students, racing pigeon master, 83 year old Dom Tomaselli. His body shows up frozen in the snow next to the house he shares with his children. An apparent accident. Dom's daughter, Flora (whose also one of Bel's students), doesn't think it was an accident and she's pretty sure her Uncle killed him over a long term debt. Bel soon finds out he is not the only suspect.
Bel doesn't work alone on her search for the killer. Her side kicks, I mean best friends Illuminada and Betty are there pretty much every step of the way. Occasionally, she calls on her fiancé Sol Hecht for back up. The characters didn't stop there and this is one of the regrets for this book. Lots of names are mentioned in the first ten pages. The swamp made it hard to keep them straight and to remember who is who. It didn't get any better as more and more names were introduced throughout. Each chapter started off with an email or an excerpt from one of her student's memoirs. This just added to the who is who confusion.
"Who cares?" was a common thought as I read through the chapter of her surprise wedding. I really didn't care who was sitting with who or knew who. It was a stagnant stop to what little momentum there was to the story.
When a book is compared to the likes of Evanovich's Plum series I expect it to be an easy, funny read with some suspense. This book had none of these qualities. It took me three weeks to read while Evanovich's are usually done within two days. This story was dry and drowned out with lifeless characters. The interesting facts about pigeon racing (like the fastest pigeon clocked was 92mph, 49 mph faster than the fastest horse) are lost and seem like they were just stuck in for prosperity's sake. This book is not high on my list for recommendation.

I haven't really enjoyed this series for the past few installments. However, I did enjoy this one. And that's because the story wasn't overfilled with the annoying sidekicks, Illuminada and Betty.
Both characters have outworn themselves in this series, having turned into a couple of unlikeable, stereotypical caricatures. Illuminada, the impatient Cuban, can't get through a paragraph without throwing out a "chiquita" and looking at her watch. Betty, the controlling African-American, can't get through a paragraph without throwing out a "girlfriend" and barking out orders. These two got old a long time ago, and the series is just so much more enjoyable when Bel is interacting with Sol, Ma, Sofia, Wendy, her kids and her students.
Hopefully the author has realized this and the series will continue in a positive manner, as it did with this installment.

A touching remembrance of pigeon.......2003-10-13
I very much enjoyed this book, so much so I read it in one weekend and was sorry it wasn't much longer. The author discusses his connection to pigeons from his very young years to midlife. Even though he grew up on the East Coast and I grew up on the West Coast we had some of the same experiences with pigeons and those who keep and race them. Reading it brought back fond and bittersweet memories of my birds and the loft I had at my parents' house. Both the birds and my beloved parents are long gone and I miss them all and those carefree days of adolence. I enjoyed reading about the author's experiences with his birds, especially finding and raising rare and exotic breeds. I hope the author writes another book about pigeons and it is much longer than this one. He has an easy to read style of writing.
