Book Description
A work Booklist called ଯving and life–affirming, Crossing Over is the true story of one woman's extraordinary flight from the protected world of the Amish people to the chaos of contemporary life.
Ruth Irene Garrett was the fifth of seven children raised in Kalona, Iowa, as a member of a strict Old Order Amish community. She was brought up in a world filled with rigid rules and intense secrecy, in an environment where the dress, buggies, codes of conduct, and way of life differed even from other Amish societies only 100 miles away. This Old Order community actively avoided all interaction with ೨e Englishߜ'96 everyone who lived on the outside. As a result, Ruth knew only one way of life, and one way of doing things.
This compelling narrative takes us inside a hidden community, offering a striking look as one woman comes to terms with her discontent and ultimately leaves her family, faith and the sheltered world of her childhood. Unsatisfied, she bravely crosses over to contemporary life to fully explore the foreign and frightening reality in hope of better understanding her emotional and spiritual desires. What emerges is a powerful tale of one woman's search for meaning and the extraordinary lessons she learns along the way.

A Sad Little Tale.......2007-10-04
I was hoping this book would educate me more on the Amish lifestyle. I actually felt sorry for the author - that night in the hotel disgusted me. I felt that Ottie took advantage of and disrespected her. It seemed like the author was young and naive and would have "escaped" with any outsider that had helped her family.
Sad.......2007-09-17
I enjoyed learning about the Amish people, but feel the writer was very young and naive and certainly DID NOT find her prince! I felt very sorry for her. Like another reader said...would like to see a follow up in 10 years or so and see if she still feels the same about her husband.
Wow I love it........2007-08-01
I really enjoyed getting some facts from the other side about the Amish. I like all the fiction works I read about them but this was great hearing from a woman who grew up Amish but learned to live outside their world on lesson at a time.
Unstructured drivel.......2007-06-21
I read this book for a book club, and do not recommend it. It has no literary value, and does not even provide much insight into Amish life. Instead, the author gives only random recollections and gripes about the Amish. The book is loaded with filler--lots of excerpts of letters, blank pages, and wide margins to hide the fact that it has little content. Nothing about the writing is worth mentioning. The author leaves her life with the Amish to lead what sounds like a completely pedestrian and uninteresting life (living off of her older husband's disability pension). I cannot think of any reason to read this book.
Somewhat Interesting Read,.......2007-04-17
The book was a quick and somewhat interesting read. The story line tends to be choppy and consists of vignettes of her life both as an Amish and as English. It begins with her returning to her childhood home to visit her parents, then goes into a series of flashbacks. The last chapter explains the visit, but there seems to be little conclusion to the book other than that. The book does give some highlight into the Amish lifestyle of the particular sect Mrs. Garrett is from. It helps remove the idealistic view many have of the Amish. However, I couldn't shake the feeling that the book was not written to show the difficulty of escaping Amish life, but rather to give the author extra income. (This is suggested more than once in the book by her frank discussion of their financial situation.)

Not to worry---it's fine.......2007-04-26
Apparently, the Fox Noise machine has cranked out a lot of negative reviews on Burns here. But ignore all that. The book is fine and well-balanced. Burns has long been a first-rate historian and political scientist and there's no reason to doubt that now. The negative reviews are from the Karl Rove crowd.
Governmet? HA!.......2006-01-26
I absolutely hated this book, it gave little factual information on the srtucture and founding of our government. The book also had an enormous left wing bias which is definately inappropriate for a college class. Instructors please find another textbook that is more interesting and deals with function and structure of government {if you want your students to read it ;) }
HORRIBLE BOOK!
gooses review.......2005-07-12
The best features of this book include the charts which appear to have been all polled in new york state or california due to the leftist bias which makes me question the accuracy of any of the statistics. The thing that I liked least was the books negative attitude toward third parties which it attempted to emphasize as spoilers in political races. Besides that the side stories were interesting but of completely no use in showing how government works. The chapters were long and very repetative stating information several times as if it was new even though it had been explained several times before. The same examples were also used in many cases to explain different things. If you have a class with this book there is no point in reading the whole book. If you know nothing about political science you should read up to the last 4 chapters which are on rights and civil liberties this part is just common sense and can be largely opinionated.
I noticed a definite left tilt as well........2004-12-17
After having spent a semester taking a class requiring this book, I definitely noticed a rather liberal-leaning bias throughout most of the text. One of the obligations of national government, as stated by the text, is its "matter of fact" attitude that more wealthy individuals owe it to "impoverised" people through literally "taking money from more wealthy states" and giving it to poor states. Give me a break, there is so much socialism and liberal drivel in this book it made reading it a headache.
Profs and teachers, PLEASE find something a little more objective than this textbook. Sheesh!!!
Leftist propaganda not science.......2003-10-28
This book presents the issues in a twisted manner, and never teaches fundamental values. It does not discuss at all the Declaration of Independence, does not give nearly enough historical background and generally mystifies the foundations of American politics. The meaning and value of the Electoral College is not explained nor compared to the structure of the Senate and House. Well if that was mentioned it would tell too much. Instead you get the usual leftist posturing, "uh - it's so complicated - let us fix it for you". The misery of this book is most evident in the discussion of the First Amendment - it is declared contradictory. Of course their interpretation is contradictory but this is what they like, so this is what you get. Once a conflict is introduced, the familiar soap opera style takes over. If you are not into MTV this book is not for you. BTW, editions galore and the price is definitely not "for the poor".
Book Description
Hurricane Katrina was a natural disaster of staggering proportions. The vicious winds and surging seas that lashed the Gulf Coast on August 31, 2005, paralyzed New Orleans and left a scene of utter devastation in their wake.
But when the winds and waves abated, they revealed an unnatural disaster — a social catastrophe directly caused by the government's callous indifference to the needs of the region's most vulnerable residents. This pattern of near-criminal government neglect did not begin with its response to Katrina, but the hurricane did lay bare its extraordinary depth and horrifying consequences, exposing how race and class can spell life or death in contemporary America.
In the months that followed, The Nation published a series of articles and editorials documenting the gross negligence of the Bush administration and the heroic effort of community organizers and ordinary citizens to put their city back together again, as well as the attempts of political progressives to push for a 'New Deal.'
Unnatural Disaster includes riveting on-the-scene reporting, columns, blogs, essays and articles from Mike Davis and Anthony Fontenot, Naomi Klein, Patricia Williams, Jeremy Scahill, Eric Alterman, Adolph Reed, Jr., Eric Foner, Curtis Wilkie, Billy Sothern, among many others.

That day.......2006-08-31
The hurricane and flood occurred on August 29, 2005 NOT the 31st. Am anxious to read and review this book as I live in New Orleans and was here to experience this country's worst manmade disaster. And we are still living it.

Gives great insight to American government.......2004-12-29
I was amazed at how interesting this book was. I used it for a class I was taking, and I had many preconceived notions that I would not like the class. I was very surprised that everything was so interesting. The author has gathered all of the latest information that was available during the publication of the book, and intergrates the ideas and concepts very well. The book gives you information that a normal person of the "general public" would not have known. I found that every chapter had something to learn that benefited me and that everything in this book applied to me as an American. Great text for my online class; I'm glad we used this book.
Great Intro to American Politics Textbook.......2002-08-11
Excellent intro to politics text. I highly recommend it for a classroom or for anyone really who wants to sit down with a plain-spoken piece to get you to understand our government. Whether it is for someone with little knowledge as to who this vast bureaucracy works, or for someone with a fairly good knowledge of it all - I don't think it will disappoint.
I think what I appreciated the most was the honesty that the text was written. The authors also included a good amount of humor to emphasize the point (in cartoon, comic, Top 10 List, etc), in order to keep a reader interested.
I think this text is also a good reference as well, as there are numerous court cases and explicit examples of gov't at work - that if you are ever at a loss for "what was it that happened?" or "what does that term mean?" Things are extremely easy to find and be referred to.
Good works.
I love their attitude,I want to read it in English!.......2000-04-16
I'm reading this book in Chinese,I love it! Our teachers never told me about it, they just teached us what is 'right'.
Book Description
When states collapse, human and global security are threatened. Order and stability must somehow be restored. This book provides a unique account of the pursuit of security at the edge of the global order. It sheds light on reform of state police and armed forces, and analyses the alternative security structures that emerge in the absence of the state. In contrast to other volumes on state failure, this book remains open-minded as to which 'model' for security is better. It thus challenges the current state-building model and the idea of the central state as the only legitimate provider of security.

A Tremendous Collection of Knowldege in One Book.......2007-02-16
This book is aimed at ornithologists, biologists, conservation workers, and birders active in Mexico,Central and South America the Neotropics.
As a birder and active conservationist I purchased this to obtain information on what may be productive birding areas to visit and also to see which areas may be the most important to direct my conservation efforts. I was not disappointed in how this book satisfied either of these goals.
Chapters in the book cover a brief description of each country including physical geography and descriptions of the richness of the avifauna and endemic bird species and information about threatened species of the country. Maps and lists of Endemic Bird Areas (EBA's) and Key Areas(important sites for conservation within the EBA's) are included for each country. Each Key Area is numbered and the text contains a section describing the area, habitat status, and conservation efforts as well as all endemic and threatened species present in each area. For example in checking Ecuador you can see that many of the localities for threatened birds and Key Areas are in the south and that the area titled Buenaventura or El Oro has eight threatened species. This area is listed as unprotected but now it is partly protected by Fundacion Jocotoco.
This book is very rich in information and a good resource for anyone interested in either pursuing the best biodiverse areas for birding or protecting them through conservation. Many sections of the book refer to the latin names of species and this was the only aspect of the book that I found cumbersome and anyone that is not totally familiar with latin bird names would also.
