Book Description
“I don’t master the mountain, I master speed.” Coming from Bode Miller, this isn’t boasting, it’s just the way he lives: fast, honest, and wide open. In this candid book, the two-time Olympic medalist and champion skier shares his story, the secret of his success, and his philosophy of life.
Born and raised “off the grid”–without electricity or indoor plumbing–in the cabin built by his father in the woods near Franconia, New Hampshire (pop. 850), Bode is unconventional to the core. The strong values of his simple upbringing, where he and his family had to “invent, grow, or carry in” all the essentials have made Bode unique among today’s top sports stars.
Bode’s approach to life is straightforward: “Get a plan, stick to it, and trust your instincts . . . and almost anything is possible.”
And practically since birth, the iconoclastic Bode has been achieving the impossible and laying down tracks for others to follow. He revolutionized his sport by adopting new and crossover technologies, such as “shape” skis. He drives his tradition-bound European rivals to distraction, skiing and winning by instinct. His outsider status, killer smile, and outspoken yet laid-back persona have earned him a reputation as the Michael Jordan of skiing. Men’s Journal named Bode the second greatest athlete in the world. And in the 2005 season, Bode may have moved up a notch by becoming the first American to win the Overall World Cup Alpine championship in twenty-two years.
In short, he is the kind of person everybody wants to know and hang out with. In a book loaded with insight, good humor, and eye-opening stories about the world of competitive skiing, Bode, as always, holds nothing back.

Customer Reviews:
Bode Fantastic skier and a great writer.......2007-04-18
This fantastic book is suitable for any audience above the age of eleven and for anyone who is a skier. Bode wraps you up in an interesting childhood that all started with home schooling. He also adds his amazing performance as a skier at only five he could out race 5 ski patrol on the slopes of his home mountain Canyon, New Hampshire. He lets you know that he doesn't only race for the pride he also but loves the fun of it. His story sinks your thought deep into the book so you feel like you are there. You feel the panic, sorrow, thrill, and pain of all his emotions. If you want to see what it's like on the slopes for a professional skier read the enchanting story of Bode Miller and autobiography.
flying downhill.......2007-03-28
I defiantly recommend this book to young skiers and people that enjoy a good laugh. This book is filled with funny stories and basically the story of Bode Miller. This book was awesome I couldn't put it down. I connected with bode on some of the things that he wrote. I love skiing and I have the dream of being a professional skier when I grow up just like Bode Miller. I the book Bode I learned that doing something that you love makes you happy especially if it is fun. I also learned that while skiing, falling is part of the process so don't be in intimidated!
As much a winner as he is........2007-01-07
2005 overall world cup champion Bode Miller was raised in New Hampshire in a rural cabin without electricity or indoor plumbing, so his roots are as unconventional as his rise to become a top sports star. GO FAST, BE GOOD, HAVE FUN is an autobiography which recounts his philosophy in life as much as his sports experience: he tells of the world of competitive skiing and how he bucked conventional wisdom to rise to the top, and his personal theories shine brightly throughout. GO FAST, BE GOOD, HAVE FUN is packed with first-person 'you are there' adventure and insights: paired with Miller's personal formula for success, it's as much a winner as he is.

Introspective Bode.......2006-08-16
I've just finished reading Bode's book after reading the Herminator's auto biography and what struck me is the difference each of them views their life, surroundings, and the meaning of it all. Whereas both exude confidence and a common vitriol to the hounding press and media, Bode comes across as introspective, self admittedly shy, compared to the all confident, all conquering Maier.
Both are obviously very special athletes - Maier crushing the race courses and his opponents on the World Cup circuit, but Bode perhaps his own demons in his quest to find meaning in life. It was rather surprising to learn that winning at all costs is not central to Bode's life.
For ski racers, both are a good read. A bit plodding at times to maintain a high level of interest, but a good view of what makes each of them tick and keep at the great white circus.
Have fun, be bad, be the Bodiest.......2006-06-22
This is a really interesting quick read. Bode is a fascinating character. The first 53 pages of the book mention little about ski racing and focus instead on Bode's family background and outdoors lifestyle. He comes from a clan of rugged outdoors maverick. The press has described his lifestyle as austere, growing up in a cabin in the woods with no electricity or running hot water. In the book, Bode describes his childhood in enchanting ways. He had a freedom to explore nature, and experience the elements. He loved every minute. Every moment was an opportunity to be challenged and have fun. He never had time to be bored or watch TV. So, it did not matter that he did not have one.
Bode is just an all around world-class athlete. In high school he was the tennis state champion. He also was an excellent varsity soccer player. Later in 2002, he won the CBS Superstars competition beating out a bunch of NFL and NBA pros at various "Survivor-like" events. His ski coaches encouraged him to pursue snowboarding racing instead of ski racing. He placed 2nd in a national snowboarding race. But, his heart was set on skiing. However, his snowboarding adventure would change skiing forever.
Bode was a pioneer in racing on shaped skis. He liked the side cut of snowboards better than the straight alpine skis. He pressured a K2 ski rep relentlessly for K2 to develop the first shaped racing ski. Bode succeeded in getting K2 to manufacture such customized parabolic skis for him. And, the rest is history. Bode and his shaped skis took the world by storm. Because of Bode everybody quickly shifted to shaped skis, as they carved better and faster turns. According to Ingemar Stenmark, the living legend of alpine skiing shaped skis revolutionized racing technique much more than anything else.
Since his early high school days, Bode developed an all out technique that results in many falls, but also many wins. This originally drove his coaches crazy. But, now coaches support this low percentage but high success rate approach.
In the opening of the 2004-05 FIS World Cup, Bode had the best start in the history of alpine racing. He won 6 of the first 10 races. He won in all four disciplines in the same season in just 16 days. Only two other skiers had duplicated this feat, and it took them nearly an entire season to do it. He describes this apex of his career near the end of the book. The book's timing is perfect as it ends on this high note.
Ever since, his career has gone downhill (no pun intended). He still managed to win the 2004-05 FIS World Cup. But, that was because of his 16-day miracle. He skied poorly the rest of the season. The 2005-06 season, including the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics were disappointing. At the Olympics, he looked out of shape compared to the Austrians.
Increasingly weird statements have come out of his mouth. Within the book, he indicated that he might start a pro tour with sponsored teams such as in bike racing that would compete on the FIS World Cup. That was a strange leap. He also indicated that (maybe because of his pro tour concept) he might not participate in the Turin 2006 Winter Olympics. He ultimately did; but performed poorly. Later he accused Lance Armstrong and Barry Bonds to take steroids. With hindsight, nobody will blame him for mentioning Bonds. But mentioning Armstrong caused a huge devaluation in his advertising potential.
Bode's ultimate fall from grace does not detract from this very original biography. The book is enjoyable whether you are into skiing or not. Heck, as Bode indicates throughout the book he is more into having fun than skiing (if the two shall meet so be it). That's at the essence of his phlegmatic charisma, his successes, and his downfall. If you enjoy this biography and also like tennis, I strongly recommend John McEnroe's "You Can't Be Serious," Boris Becker's "The Player," and Ilie Nastase's "Mr. Nastase." They are all multifaceted characters.

Book Description
With more than 500 full color pictures, this book is seen by many as the "modeler's bible" of all the F-16 Fighting Falcon books. It uncovers the F-16 A/B/C/D in all its detail from in and outside; fuselage details, cockpit variants, maintenance and armament. Scale drawings and cockpit diagrams conclude this publication.
Customer Reviews:
Now, this is a modeler's reference.......2005-04-15
Are you interested in the development of the Falcon, it's service around the world, and the like? Then look elsewhere, you'll find almost none of that here. What you will find are 128 pages full of ~4 crystal clear photos of everything that you could want for the Falcon. You want 3 photos of the refueling port showing exactly how it folds down as well as a lovely phot of the interior of the port? It's here. Want 4 photos of the new stiffners added to the fuselage? It's here. Want 12 pages of photos of the -A cockpit, 6 of the -C, and 2 pages just covering the ejector seat? Here you go. Want 2 pages of the AIM-120 AMRAAM missile, another 2 of AAQ-14 Lantirn pod, and many other armaments including a full page of artwork showing all the things you can hang on a F-16? Yup, it's here. Does it have plans, you ask? Not only does it have plans of the plane, it has 6 pages of plans for the cockpits showing every knob, switch, and what have you.
This is a fantastic model reference. With books on the F-15, F/A-18, and F-14 either out or soon to be released, modelers of modern American fighters have little to complain about.

For modellers by the master modeller.......2007-05-17
Francois Verlinden is the foremost model maker of his generation, and this superb book reflects his knowledge of what the intermediate to advanced modeler needs to know in order to produce outstanding results. It should be noted therefore that, while comprehensive, this slim title is not a detailed technical appraisal of the F-16. Rather it is designed to give the model maker sufficient insight to add the kind of details that mark out an every day model from a potential museum piece. Having said that, even if you are not planning to build a model F-16, you'll still enjoy this lavishly illustrated and informatively written book.

Book Description
The F-16, called the Viper by its pilots, has been the most prolific fighter in US and Coalition operations in the Middle East for over a decade. Since the 1991 Gulf War, it has been the workhorse of the UN-sanctioned operations in the region, working in 'Wild Weasel', ground attack and air superiority roles. Operations Southern Watch and Northern Watch required daily and continuous combat patrols over Iraqi territory for over a decade - a task that was made simpler by the bountiful supply of F-16s in USAF service, and the fact that the jet has always been able to assume multiple roles and uses. When US President George W Bush ordered his forces into Iraq in March 2003, the F-16CJ was the second aircraft to enter enemy airspace-proper, sweeping the skies for electrons in a bid to find, identify and kill Iraq's comprehensive air defence system. With the mission fulfilled, hordes of other Coalition fighters followed, including F-16CGs, which were used with great success to strike numerous targets.

Book Description
The F-16 Fighting Falcon is the world's most popular, most sought after multi-role fighter. A revolutionary aircraft that has continuously evolved to meet global needs, the F-16 flew more sorties than any other aircraft during Operation Desert Storm.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book on the F-16.......2006-09-03
I own other books in this series by Combat Legends and this one is just as good as the others, which are all great.
The Combat Legends series covers the aircraft from conception to 2003 (when the book was published).
I like the book because it covers why the aircraft was conceived in the first place as a agile, light-weight, simple fighter (basically in the performance mold of a MIG-21) that was to complement the F-15 Eagle and takes the reader on a journey from it's beginnings through operational history, combat operations, accomplishments, variants, and so on. There are plenty on high-quality photos throughout but this is not the book to own if your looking for a picture book. Specs are almost non-existent which is only a tiny flaw in an otherwise excellent book but if you want specs you can always visit websites that contain that info such as F-16.net and FAS.org, both excellent military website.
To summarize, if your looking for a history book on the F-16 then this book is definitely for you and if you do purchase this book you will purchase others in the series, their that interesting.
A disapointment: short on details.......2004-02-26
I purchased this book expecting a detailed look at the workings of the F-16 and was disappointed.
The book provides little in terms of technical details on the F-16 and serves more as a general history of the aircraft. There isn't even a detailed listing of the aircraft's dimensions.
The book does cover a bit of the F-16s combat record with an account of an Israeli pilot's air-to-air combat kill in an F-16. The account itself however isn't very riveting.
If I had looked through this book at a a bookstore, I would have passed on it.

Book Description
Josh McDowell's Beyond Belief message is the foundation to launch a spiritual revolution among youth. This is a revolution to equip churches and families to raise up a generation of the cross--young people who have been transformed by Christ and the cross, who are empowered to live crossgrain to the culture and are committed to share Christ across all cultures.
Sixteen stand-alone products make up an entire family of resources that churches need to launch a church-wide revolution. These products are directed to every age group from 5 to 105, and help equip church groups and families with the tools to lead their children and youth to become transformed, passionate followers of Christ.
Already a best seller, this book lays the foundations for the CrossCulture Revolution. Every product within this family of resources finds its root here. Beyond Belief to Convictions offers a revolutionary blueprint to raise up a generation of transformed followers of Christ with deepened convictions who knows why they believe what they believe.
Customer Reviews:
"An householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.".......2007-06-05
On one level, this book is nothing new. We have read the material before in More Than a Carpenter and in The New Evidence That Demands A Verdict Fully Updated To Answer The Questions Challenging Christians Today. However this book is subtly different.
There is a joke among Christians: If Jesus is the answer, then what is the question? This book begins with the question, namely, the horror-statistics reminiscent of Bill Bennett's "Index of Leading Cultural Indicators" So the book puts the Christian answer (i.e. Christ), in the context of present-day problems. That is the first difference.
The second difference is the ends to which the information is used, namely, staring a "Beyond Beliefs To Conviction Campaign." The book deigns to be a handbook for revival, or really, a restoration of the Christian faith that is under attack. McDowell's objective is to bring members of the various Christian denominations back to Christ and the Gospel.
McDowell says:
"It is not that our kids are rejecting Christianity as they know it-they have simply been influenced to redefine it according to their cultural setting. They are putting together their own religious canon in a smörgåsbord style. They are led to believe it is better to pick and choose from various ideas, concepts of God, and religion around them until they construct a tailor-made "faith," one that's just right for them. They are being encouraged to piece their faith together themselves; that way it will be theirs personally, and it will offend no one." (10)
As an outsider to Protestantism, I am fascinated by the divisions within this branch (if you can call it that) of Christianity. It is a question that C. S. Lewis avoided in Mere Christianity, event though he answered it in his personal life. What are we to make of the evangelical and non-evangelical branches of Protestantism, the Megachurches, seeker-friendly models, U2charists, the fads and personalities, and so forth. This book seems to bridge the gap between the the old-school and new-school models. Which brings me to the last difference.
The third difference is the approach used in presenting the information. This book is a mixture of straight up text-book non-fiction, and emotionally engaging fiction, involving a group of young teens starting their own campaign.
This made for interesting reading, as I had to mentally switch gears. But it helped me to integrate the material. It is one thing to know a fact, but quite another to be able to cogently present the material to another person. So McDowell's approach was helpful. It is like comparing Plato to Aristotle: both can say the same thing. Aristotle will say it quicker, but Plato will present it in a memorable fashion. Think of C. S. Lewis's two Christological books: Mere Christianity, and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (The Chronicles of Narnia). There is a reason why we love the second fictional version.
This is all nice, but the real question is how effective is the book. I think the book is a good as it possibly could be. The real question is how well the principles are implemented. Another issue affecting effectiveness is that any individual would need a very tight support group--with interested parents, clergy, youth, and interested friends helping the campaign to get rolling. Unless this happens, it will always be "one of a city, and two of a family."
*
Parting Thoughts:
The last section is like watching an episode of the TRANSFORMERS Generation 1 (G1) : Complete DVD Box Set 15 Discs (98 Episodes+The movie): it is a not-too-subtle commercial for other products. Ahem!
The books tone is panicky at times:
* "In many ways, our young people today must endure a twenty-first-century Colosseum. They may not face literal lions, but they quite possibly encounter more ethical and moral temptations, greater spiritual battles and more intense emotional and relational struggles than any other generation in history." (4)
* "We may lose and entire generation." (295).
It begins with the normal shock-statistics that we all know and to which we all wince involuntarily. Whatever you think of McDowell or Christianity, you must admit that McDowell is driven, by the stick of postmodernism, and the carrot of Christ.
Beyond Belief to Convictions.......2007-01-09
This book is easy reading but has some good insights. I enjoyed the chapter on intrepeting scripture.
Why We Believe and Why It Matters.......2004-01-15
Over the years, Josh McDowell has become well known for his logical and factual arguments for the Christian faith. In this book, he takes his work to the next level.
The premise of this book is clear. In an age of relativism, we are loosing the youth of today because they don't believe in truth any more. Many believe that Christianity is just one acceptable way out of many and Jesus was a good teacher. Yet, today's youth are also adrift, not sure how to deal with what life brings their way.
The solution is to show youth that Christianity is true. If Christianity is true, it provides the answers to all of life. But it is not one way out of many or a blind faith. There is evidence that backs up what the Bible says. McDowell takes on the Deity of Christ, Scripture, and the Resurrection. In successive parts, he gives an overview of the evidence and then moves on to what that means in the lives of believers.
The call of this book is important. We must continue to be ready to give an answer to every man who asks as Peter tells us to do. And the logical extension of what that means to us is an important touch. Sometimes that is overlooked in the rush to present apologetics. This book challenged and encouraged me as I was reading it.
Unfortunately, it doesn't have quite the punch it could. McDowell tries to illustrate the importance of what he is talking about with stories from a fictitious youth group. While some of it works, other parts are weak and actually detract from the overall message. A little less time with the fiction and a little more time making his points other ways would have made this a stronger book.
This is an important step forward for modern apologetics, being ready to share with today's youth. The information presented here, while clearly only scratching the surface, is a good starting point for anyone interested in the subject of why Christians believe and what the means for life on Earth today.
Disappointed in Audio CD.......2003-10-26
Josh McDowell is a great speaker with passion and conviction. Having his book read by a professional voice, in a monotone style, does not work for this product. Save the money and order Josh McDowell's presentation from Focus on the Family for $5. It is much better, has the same content, only spoken with conviction by the author himself.
