I was so angry after reading this book that someone would write this sort of garbage for kids.
This book makes it even harder to enforce rules that you have set for your children. Children (especially teens) look for anything to justify their bad behavior and wanting to do as they please and this is a slap in the face to parents. This book basically tells children that they are entitled to do anything and that parents are just idiots who are trying to ruin all the fun.
Here are some quotes from the book:
1) "You have a right to keep secrets. You have a right to have telephone conversations in private".
Excuse me? My minor child does NOT have the right to private telephone conversations that include foul language, discussions about illegal activities, drugs, explicit sexual talk or anything else I deem inappropriate for my child.
What if a child was being molested? Do they have a right to keep that a secret to?
2) "Even though you did not pay for the possessions you have, you own them. Since it is yours you have the right to lend it to other people, to trade it away for something else, you have the right to lose it, break it or spoil it".
Pardon me but when I pay several hundred dollars for video game systems, video games and stereos, my child does NOT have the right to turn around and sell it to a friend for $10.
3) "You have the right to be able to select your own clothes and choose your own hairstyle. You have the right to listen to the music you like and watch the kind of television shows that you like but not as necessarily as loud or as often as you'd like."
No my child does not have the right to dress like a gangbanger and listen to gangster rap music but according to this book, he does.
I am guessing this author likes seeing kids with pants 5 sizes to big pulled down past their bottom with their underwear hanging out. It is not ok for girls to dress like young street walkers. Has this author actually seen Mtv or what is on cable? No, my child does NOT have the right to watch whatever he wants on tv or listen to music that demeans women and celebrates violence.
And don't even get me started on the section about how teachers are out to get you and make a fool out of you!
Great guide for kids to understanding feelings.......1998-05-25
This is a straightforward, accessible book for kids that talks to them, not at them. It really helps them make sense of personal and life issues such as self-esteem, divorce, finding out what they like to do, etc. A timeless classic that provides great advice for kids. Parents should give it to their kids--I read this growing up and I always found it to be a comforting source of information.

I am both a social worker and a divorced mother and I can tell you this book is terrific. While the book's title says it is for divorced mothers, fathers and therapists would find it helpful as well. I noticed that it is updated with the latest information, including an intriguing chapter on technology and visitation. The issues it addresses are modern as is the advice from professionals and parents. I plan to recommend it to colleagues and clients.

This is my favorite book for introducing young children to having a new baby in the family because it is completely unbiased towards birthing options. Any mother could read this book whether she is planning a homebirth, birth at a birth center, or in a hospital. Since my births fit in all three categories, I appreciate having a book that doesn't tell my kids that birth has to happen a certain way. The book also talks about after the birth: how children can help their mommies, how mommy will feel, etc. which hasn't been something covered in other books I've looked at. My daughter really enjoys this book, especially with the nine-year old illustrations!

Life magazine was only one of many American publications that fielded battlefront correspondents during World War II, but it boasted an uncommonly talented roster of writers and photographers, among them Theodore White, Robert Capa, and Margaret Bourke-White. Their images and reports brought home to American readers the horrors of that distant war, from George Strock's extraordinary photograph of dead American marines on a New Guinea beach to shocking views of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps. This selection of photographs and extended captions from the pages of Life and other contemporary publications gathers images that have become part of American iconography (such as the Associated Press's famed photograph of the Fighting Sullivans). Life has always excelled at getting great pictures of our society and this is the case with this book. There is some minimal writing to complement this book, but it is mainly a picture book, and a brief one at that. The pictures are great but there is not a lot of meat to this book.
For those interested in visiting the past through pictures, this is a great book. For those interested in trying to understand this period in the life of America, one will need to try elsewhere for a better book.

There's something about a black and white photograph that has a timeless, ethereal quality. It's almost as if it's a vehicle to take you back into a better time, a grander time.
Such is the case with "Our Finest Hour", a collection of black and white photographs from the pages of Life Magazine. All the photos were taken during what was likely America's grandest, most noble, time of all, World War Two.
Some of the master photographers are represented in this book, including Alfred Eisenstaedt and W. Eugene Smith. The images are extraordinary. Examples include a photo by Eisenstaedt of a sailor on furlough, chatting with two grizzled elderly men - all three sitting on a cannon in a city park; and classic pictures of the hell of combat on the barren, smoldering landscape of Iwo Jima taken by W. Eugene Smith.
The quality is no surprise. If it's from Life Magazine, you expect the best, and the tradition continues. The book is well organized with helpful text and narrative, beginning with Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor and ending with soldiers coming home to their families, friends, lovers and a grateful country in 1945. The reproduction of the photos is superb.
"Our Finest Hour" represents photojournalism at its finest. It's art. It's history. It's fabulous.

I enjoyed reading this book. I enjoyed finding out the "unspoken" information about past Presidents fascinating. I believe that every American should read the Declaration of Independence and not only know the Presidents who signed it but because it is the rights in which our country is founded on. You can't defend rights you don't know you have. This book is a "MUST" for your freedom and entertainment as well.

Every one of the 50 people at my son's wedding reheasal will be receiving one from me. Like a "Bible zealot", I am becoming a "US Constitution zealot." The book is small & easy to read, a good learning handbook for everyone. FREEDOM THROUGH KNOWLEDGE.
Victim of Vast Right Wing Conspiracy.......2006-05-18
I think that some zealot right-wingers got a hold of this because I can't find the part about separation of church and state anywhere. Oh, that's right that did not exist until the Everson v. Board of Education decision in 1947. This was a 5-4 decision by a court packed with Roosevelt's socialist justices and they barely bought into this.
While people moan and groan about the 7-2 (yes that is right 7-2) decision denying Al Gore's attempt to thwart the Constitution, they embrace the Everson ruling as if it were etched in stone. If you look at the case more thoroughly it was not even really a separation of state from church issue but rather the other way around. The parent's simply were using their tax dollars to transport their children to the school of their choosing. I guess they didn't want the problem that our state educated children have with math, science, reading, writing, geography, history, unbiased free thinking, etc.
The rest of this book is great. It lays out the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Articles of Confederation. It gives brief histories as well interesting facts on each. It also has a small section on the Supreme Court and some landmark cases. Note, Everson is not amongst the ones listed.
Read it in good health. This is the rulebook that our country was founded on. If you don't like the rules you don't need a majority to vote for a change you just need 5 people in black to push their agendas. To our 4 justices out there that apparently haven't read this please get a copy and stop F'ing up our country.
