        Book Description

Not until the early 1980s did Americans collectively redirect their attention to Vietnam. Coincident with the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. came a return to emotions and issues that had been repressed since the end of the war. These are manifested, for example, by the growing attention paid to the war by the mass media, especially television and film. Each essay in this volume in some way examines how the past is organized and construed to give shape and meaning to the present and the future. Each speaks to consequences of how Vietnam is and is not remembered. Each also reports that the Vietnam War did not end with the cessation of combat. Diverse forms of symbolic expressions- speeches and argument, prose and poetry, films, TV programs, memorials, private conversations- all strive to give shape and significance to the war.

            Book Description

This ambitious volume brings together a group of distinguished scholars who have worked together over five years' time in an attempt to explain the present pan-Asian revival of Confucianism a century after it was declared moribund by leading philosophers and thinkers in China and Japan as well as in the West.

This collaborative study of China and its historical sphere of influence in Japan, Korea, and Vietnam begins by clearly establishing the principal threads that made up Confucian thought in the period of its unchallenged eminence. It also examines the pitfalls of Western scholars who have tended to lump together as "Confucianism" many diverse currents of Chinese and other Asian classical thought.

Uniquely, the book explores as well traditional Confucian views of issues such as gender, medicine, and ritual, and examines the reasons given by leading Asian and Western scholars for rejecting Confucianism at the end of the nineteenth century.

5 out of 5 stars Three Faces of Vietnam.......2001-12-20

Having been stationed in Vietnam during the TET Offensive of 1968, and serving as a medic. I found the book very informative. Many of us were not "up to speed" on the views of those discussed in the book. The military, vietnamese civilian, and the American public's views were well stated in the book and will help anyone who is still confused on the issues. Well done.

                      Book Description

"A hell of a gift, an opportunity." "Magnanimous." "One of the greatest advantages I ever experienced." These are the voices of World War II veterans, lavishing praise on their beloved G.I. Bill. Transcending boundaries of class and race, the Bill enabled a sizable portion of the hallowed "greatest generation" to gain vocational training or to attend college or graduate school at government expense. Its beneficiaries had grown up during the Depression, living in tenements and cold-water flats, on farms and in small towns across the nation, most of them expecting that they would one day work in the same kinds of jobs as their fathers. Then the G.I. Bill came along, and changed everything. They experienced its provisions as inclusive, fair, and tremendously effective in providing the deeply held American value of social opportunity, the chance to improve one's circumstances. They become chefs and custom builders, teachers and electricians, engineers and college professors. But the G.I. Bill fueled not only the development of the middle class: it also revitalized American democracy. Americans who came of age during World War II joined fraternal groups and neighborhood and community organizations and took part in politics at rates that made the postwar era the twentieth century's civic "golden age." Drawing on extensive interviews and surveys with hundreds of members of the "greatest generation," Suzanne Mettler finds that by treating veterans as first-class citizens and in granting advanced education, the Bill inspired them to become the active participants thanks to whom memberships in civic organizations soared and levels of political activity peaked. Mettler probes how this landmark law produced such a civic renaissance. Most fundamentally, she discovers, it communicated to veterans that government was for and about people like them, and they responded in turn. In our current age of rising inequality and declining civic engagement, Soldiers to Citizens offers critical lessons about how public programs can make a difference.

2 out of 5 stars An Opportunity Lost.......2007-02-27

The GI Bill is the subject of a great book. The human interest stories of people affected by this landmark legislation should inspire us all. Unfortunately, this is not that book. It reads like a doctoral dissertation (which it may well be), with all the dryness and academic disinterest that implies. We get statistics and conclusions, with random personal impacts thrown in as filler. Never once do we get engaged in the subject. I looked forward to this book, but I read to the end out of a sense of duty, not because I really wanted to. The opportunity for a great book about the GI Bill was there. Ms. Mettler wasted it. The stars are for the stats, not the story.

5 out of 5 stars Essential read for anyone interested in the history of successful American public policy.......2006-10-22

This book is such an articulately composed analysis of one of the United States' most successful public policies. In "Soldiers to Citizens," Suzanne Mettler outlines how the educational provisions of the G.I. Bill created what she refers to as "the greatest generation." The G.I. Bill not only fulfilled its intention of rewarding veterans for their selfless acts of patriotism, but it provided the opportunity for upward mobility, it increased civic engagement and strengthened political involvement.

With the constant media bombardment of negative political images, it's easy to gain a sense of cynicism toward our government. "Soldiers To Citizens" provides an optimistic view of how our government can positively affect our citizens through the implementation of strong public programs. Through personal interviews and extensive research, Mettler provides an intriguing analysis. I am fortunate enough to be a student of Mettler's. Simply put - she's brilliant.

I recommend this book to US politics and policy students, public servants, veterans, those in academia or anyone who has a genuine interest in American public policy.

"The Thorntons have high standards indeed—some of these pictures are easily the best ever taken of their respective species; some are spectacular, even dazzling."

—Robert S. Ridgely, Vice President, American Bird Conservancy

"Nothing quite like this book has ever been done by anyone—great photos of tropical birds and interesting, informative text."

—Victor Emanuel, President, Victor Emanuel Nature Tours

From Belize to Brazil, the forests of the American neotropics are home to an astonishing array of birds—over 3,700 different species, or nearly 40 percent of all the birds on earth. Because of this overwhelming abundance, birders come from all over the world to try to catch glimpses of species that can be found nowhere else, such as toucans and antbirds, motmots and manakins, bellbirds and cocks-of-the-rock, and practically all of the planet's hummingbirds. Two such birding enthusiasts are Vera and Bob Thornton, who have spent fifteen years photographing these special and exotic birds in the rainforests of eleven different countries of Central and South America. In this book, you'll find more than a hundred spectacular color photographs they took during their travels, along with a highly entertaining account of their adventures—and misadventures—in chasing these exotic neotropicals.

The birds pictured here are among the Thorntons' personal favorites—birds that, in their words, "either dazzled us with their beauty, or charmed us by their behavior, or, in a few cases, simply challenged us by the mystique of their rarity." This latter category includes such elusive and sought-after birds as the Black-crowned Antpitta, the Zigzag Heron, the Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo, the Bare-necked Umbrellabird, and the monkey-eating Harpy Eagle. In the accompanying text, Bob Thornton engagingly describes the challenges as well as the magic of negotiating the neotropical rainforests in search of colorful birds to photograph. For those who would like to follow in the Thorntons' footsteps, there are also helpful tips about photographic gear and techniques, preferred places to see the birds, lodging, and guides. For everyone who enjoys excellent nature photography, Chasing Neotropical Birds is a must-have volume on the coffee table or in the library.

5 out of 5 stars Insights on some interesting neotropical bird species........1999-06-15

This may be Skutch's last book--the culmination of seven decades of careful observation of hundreds of bird species. Here he has selected some very interesting neotropicals and offers his own detailed, thoughtful insights into their habits, often citing other sources to round out the reader's appreciation of his subjects. His narrative style is objective yet personal--spoken as though he were standing right next to you while birding together. This book deserves a place in your library. It is a wonderful reference source as well as a good read. Skutch is truly a master and this is another important contribution to his body of excellent work.

                            Book Description

Four of the world's leading ornithologists and ardent conservationists have produced this unique synthesis of the ecological information on all 4,037 species of birds found from Mexico south to Tierra del Fuego. In tables that cover more than 300 pages and include much of their own unpublished data, the authors summarize details on 40 key ecological parameters for each bird species. Additional data and further analyses are provided for migratory species.

Because bird communities are good indicators of habitat type and condition, and because extensive bird surveys can be done quickly, bird communities are critical to rapid evaluations of an ecosystem's biological value and integrity. The authors analyze the bird species of major habitats from a conservation perspective, and develop specific guidelines to illustrate how governments, conservation organizations, and wildlife managers can use this ecological information to anchor conservation strategies on sound biological reality.

"Students of ecology and wildlife management, as well as conservationists, will benefit from this book . . . . Governmental and conservation agencies should use this book when making critical decisions about where to focus their efforts as they work to preserve the environment in fragile regions of the world." —Edward I. Saiff, Science Books & Films

Certainly tropical bird lovers, who have had the thrill of one or more bird trips to Central or South America, will want to begin to make more sense of their experiences. This book is for the birder about to turn tropical ecologist. It makes sense of the habitats, with terrific photos, many by John Fitzpatrick, of representative areas of the key habitats. The database tables in the back of the book, termed "essentially a download of Ted Parker's mind" are the essence of this information. For each of the 4000 species from the Rio Grande to Tierra Del Fuego, there are lists of habitats used by every species, and even a table of the indicator bird species for each region.
The books makes the really important point: you cannot prioritize saving the birds of the tropics only by species, one bird at a time. You have to look at what habitats are being irreversibly destroyed the most rapidly, and use those birds which depend most on these habitats - as info connections by which the habitats are to be recognized in the field, and then saved by appropriate political and economic action. Terrific book! Easy to read.

To determine the mechanisms for species-spacing in a group of closely related bird species--namely, five species of Neotropical Kingfishers--the author studied their feeding behavior and diet at three sites, two in Bolivia and one in Colombia. He found that changes in number of coexisting species were correlated with changes in abundance and size distribution of their prey, surface-dwelling fishes.

The apparent decline in numbers among many species of migratory songbirds is a timely subject in conservation biology, particularly for ornithologists, ecologists, and wildlife managers. This book presents a full discussion of the problem.

4 out of 5 stars Summarize existing research and call for more.......2003-05-28

This 1995 publication contains 17 chapters reviewing current research of critical issues of the ecology and conservation of neotropical migratory birds. Although the title implies "management", the number of specific management recommendations varies depending upon the author, taxonomic group or geographic area being discussed. In all the chapters, is an overwhelming call for more research.

Tallahassee's own Dr. James and Charles McCulloch, provided a key paper, on the strength of inferences about causes. Often it is easy to blame one source or another for declines, but this paper helps understand the need for "true experiment".

An interesting series is four chapters on temporal perspectives on population limitation, including a discussion of summer versus winter limitation, habitat use in the neoptropics, and habitat requirements during migration. The chapter on insect outbreaks and other perturbations (such as climate) by Rotenberry et al was important perspective, particular here in Florida, where a hurricane can change the vegetative characteristics of an area overnight.

The middle six chapters discuss forest management, and other human effects such as agricultural practices (this chapter was particularly eye opening: with 52% of the land area in the 48 contiguous states).

The final section on landscape scale perspectives, provided problems of management at different scales, from a local clear-cut to continental scale. This perhaps might have been frustrating to the land manager seeking to understand how to manage his 1000 acres, or what to do about the cowbirds that are impacting wood thrush.

There are other threats such as West Nile Virus, exotic species, and perhaps global warming that may become important in the future. Perhaps Faaborg's "Saving migrant birds"... may provide other insights.

                                  Book Description

Containing more than one-third of the world's bird species, the neotropical region surpasses all other zoogeographic regions in the diversity of its avian fauna. Though the exploration and cataloging stages of ornithology are now virtually complete, new species and undescribed subspecies of birds are still occasionally discovered. In this manual, Emmet R. Blake has drawn on his experience of forty-eight years in the field and laboratory to prepare a comprehensive, detailed, and authoritative synopsis of the avifauna of tropical America as now known.
