Book Description
This book explores the causes, operations, endings, and justifications of war. In the process, it demolishes many currently fashionable illusions, such as that peace is always preferable to war, that wars occur because of accidents or misunderstandings, and that technology changes the nature of war. Abundant historical and contemporary examples show, the authors contend, that all wars are deliberate political choices, that military operations follow timeless principles, and that, as Aristotle taught, the natural aim of war is victory. This new edition of the book that Eugene Rostow called âa gem,â Michael Howard called âshrewd and trenchant,â and Library Journal called âpersuasiveâ devotes substantial attention to the wars of the postâCold War period, including âthe war on terrorism.â
Customer Reviews:
Very insightful. A MUST READ!.......2007-02-04
It is extremely rare that I would consider a book a "must read", however, this book is simply outstanding. Anyone with an interest in conflict or international relations will find the authors incredibly insightful. This should be required reading for anyone in the military or anywhere else in the government who is involved in our relations with other peoples and nations.
This book gets six stars out of a possible five. (Yes, you read that correctly.)
An additional plug for Codevilla: having read some of his articles as well, I will say that any of his work is worth searching out and reading.
The Best Book on the Subject in a Very Long Time.......2006-12-14
One of the abosolutely best books I've read on the subject of war in years. There are so many good points that I can't possibly mention them here, but two really stand out.
Civilians have become the target. Perhaps 70% of the people killed in World War II were civilians. This includes jews, homosexuals, slavs, gypsys, et al in the death camps, and the people under the bombs in London or Berlin. Since then, perhaps 100,000,000 have been killed in ethnic clensing, deliberate starvation, revolutions and so on.
If you really want to take out the terrorists, go after their directors, not the terrorists themselves.
If a cleric is preaching 'Death to America' in his mosque, when the service ends and the people walk outside they find an orbiting Preadator has dropped leaflets saying that it isn't wise to go to places to hear such talking. The second time they get a stronger message by leaflet. The third time a Hellfire missile ends the sermon.
Oh but can you imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth among our own liberals, to say nothing of al-Jazeera and the United Nations.
Instead we look for terrorists like we look for other criminals, one at a time, and restricted to the actual perp, not the ones who sent them out.
Still the Best.......2006-11-07
An instant classic when it was first published, this new edition is even better. A must read for anyone who wishes to understand the causes of war and how to deal with them.
JDW
To Understand Our Current Situation...And What Needs To Be Done.......2006-10-02
A great far ranging analysis of military and political strategy; his serious analysis of terrorism and what needs to be done is worth the price of this book. After reading this book, one will know why our efforts are at least partially not working, what needs to be done, and when we know things are going the right way. It also indirectly tells us what we should do about Iran. Another great effort, similar to his columns in the Claremont Review and his previous book, "No Victory, No Peace."
Title says it all.......2003-12-27
Read this book and the thought may occur to you: "This is so bloody obvious, who needs to read it in a book?" But then put the book down, read the newspapers, listen to the talking heads on TV, or attend a university lecture on the same subjects, and you quickly realize: none of it is obvious to anyone that matters. On second or third reading, you realize that what it's saying is not "obvious" at all; the book's genius consists in making a radical and controversial thesis sound self-evident.
I have one quibble, but the quibble doesn't detract sufficiently from the book to subtract a star: because the authors discuss warfare out of relation to morality, an incautious reader could easily get the impression that they are "Machiavellian" amoralists whose advice can be dismissed as "amoral realism." It isn't true, but they might have been more explicit about why not.
It really is a sad commentary on our culture that this book is as obscure as it is.

A leading expert explains what government bureaucracies do and why they behave the way they do.
Customer Reviews:
great read for policy people.......2007-05-09
I just finished a masters program in public policy, and though this book was not used in any of my classes, it was recommended reading. I have to say that it provides a great introduction to bureaucracies and why they are the way they are. (Spoiler: it's not, as many believe, because bureacrats are idiots) Coming from a background of small, private-sector organizations, this was especially useful for me.
I appreciate Wilson's taxonomies of various organizations. Every political scientist has to have a 2x2 matrix to divide the world, but one of Wilson's, that divides organizations into "production," "coping," "craft," and "procedural" is particularly useful. If you are planning a career in public service, you'd do well to take some time to match your personality to the type of organization you're thinking of joining.
This book is NOT a sociological examination of bureaucracy .......2007-03-10
Though the author does name drop Max Weber twice, this book is far from a concise sociological understanding of the concept bureaucracy. So reading it from this standpoint, the material would appear a bit long winded and inconcise. I would not recommend this book if you are interested in understanding bureaucracy from a sociological perspective. The focus is strictly government bureaucracy (mostly if not entirely a United States bureacracy analysis). "Search inside this book" and you can see how the author breaks up this focus. ( Don't be fooled by reading the paged provided to you by Amazon, the rest of the book isn't at all like those few beginning pages. The book gets more uninteresting as you read the following chapters.) In my opinion the book is overloaded with example that, as reader, you kind of lose focus as to what the points of those examples are. And it's almost as though these "examples" that the author provides are really suppose to be stand alone "stories of interest" The book was written in 1989 so all the examples are dated in that respect so if you purchase this book now in 2007, these examples may not be of any interest in and of themselves like I believe the author intended them to be. For 25 plus dollars I would say that this book really isn't worth a purchase but if money is not an issue or if you can get this book for less then whatever you know. It not even a very good book on government bureaucracy either in my opinion because the author really isn't very insightful in his analysis. Just read the review by Tansu Demir found in the review section and save your money.
Good book.......2007-02-15
This is a book used for my public management class and I have to say, it is pretty interesting. I feel that there is some overlap in chapters, but overall it's a good book.
Student Review.......2006-07-09
Overall good book offering the student of Bureaucratic Behavior a unique insight into the wide variety of personality traits that are commonly found in today's bureacracies as well as an in-depth vew of how the US form of Governemnt operates in a sometimes difficult arena of these personalities. I do believe chapter summaries could have been better developed and in some cases there was too much in the examples and in some there was too little. Overall a good book on the subject.
Wonderfully written.......2005-04-20
Wilson, as usual, writes amazingly well in this comprehensive book covering bureaucracies, how they operate, and why bureaucrats act the way they do.
He discusses the different organizational features that persist across all bureaucracies, and why it is that once a bureaucracy is created it's almost impossible to get rid of. This may pique your interest if you've been following the recent attempts to solve our intelligence problems by adding more layers of bureaucrats, as if that will somehow solve the problem.
Highly recommended to all students of American politics.

Book Description
Two essays, originally presented as lectures, explore the poetry and paintings of the prolific Japanese artist Yosa Buson (1716-1784). An innovative freethinker, Buson is now recognized as one of the most remarkable artists of the 18th century and a prominent figure in Japan's cultural history.
This book explores the ways by which Yosa Buson portrayed a realm of profound beauty and rich invention. Buson moved effortlessly between visual and verbal systems of expression, creating both paintings and poetry of lyrical beauty. The text focuses on a selection of works from the last phase of his career to elucidate the ways in which Buson's poetic and pictorial sensibilities were intertwined.

Book Description
It is, first and foremost, a genre-blurring work. Through the structure of the individual poems themselves and through the novelistic arc of the collection as a whole, these poems question the divide between prose and poetry. It is also a small, delicately balanced work of art that illuminates the Vietnamese American experience beyond the frame of the war; a meditation on the bifurcated life of the immigrant/exile. Many of these poems investigate eroticism in the lives of Asian and Asian American women, an element often explored in literature from the perspective of men, but here presented straight from the source.
Customer Reviews:
Exquisite.......2003-01-07
A beautiful and completely satisfying collection of poetry. Long after I put the book down, my mind was full of unforgettable images: a loving father who captures a seagull for his daughter, a woman holding her husband in sleep like a cricket swaying on a blade of grass, an orange moon over New York. This is a rare collection of poetry that also introduces us to compelling characters and a heartbreaking central story. The Mynah Bird is one who repeats the words of others. I found Ms. Tran's voice original, gentle and exquisitely measured.
