5 out of 5 stars Read this book before your baby is born!.......2000-05-12

I read this entire book while on pregnancy-related bed rest, and I know it directly contributed to my success in breastfeeding my son.

There is an ENTIRE chapter devoted to the first week of breastfeeding, an explanation of why so many new mothers find the natural art of breastfeeding so difficult and information on maintaining a good supply of milk.

The information on expressing and storing of milk is excellent. I work full-time and my eight month old has only had breastmilk (no formula supplements). Based on advice in the book, I built a nice supply of frozen milk before returning to work. I also opted for a more expensive pump -- which has saved me the cost of formula and allowed me to provide my baby with the best food available.

2 out of 5 stars Useful, but not the best book on nursing.......1999-07-09

I have used this book for three months, since the birth of my daughter, and it does have useful information. But the tone is quite strident, and there are better books available. My favorite is The Nursing Mother's Companion, by Kathleen Huggins.

5 out of 5 stars One Stop to Learn it All.......1999-02-19

As a first-time mom, I wanted one book that covered all the issues regarding breastfeeding, and this one does it perfectly. Written by a doctor, it's well organized and comprehensive (without being boring). Just skip the chapters that don't apply to you. Topics covered include: ALL of the emotional and health issues, for the baby and for you; the biology of the breast (yes, there is such a thing); weaning the baby; laws governing the workplace; general information about the different types of breast pumps; equipment you do and don't need; and a list of resources for more information. I highly recommend this book to anybody contemplating breastfeeding.

Book Description

Breast cancer in women is the subject of in-depth media attention. Newspapers, journal and magazine articles, and newscasts regularly present the latest breakthroughs--often without distinguishing between solid research and dubious speculation. This title in Omnigraphics' Health Reference Series sorts through the confusion to provide reliable, current information on breast cancer and its associated disorders in both women and men.

With stress on early detection through mammography and self-examination, research has shown that breast cancer can be eliminated or controlled through a variety of treatment options, each of which is presented in depth in this volume. Other subjects, including facts about heredity and other risk factors, preventive measures, coping issues, a glossary of terms, and a rich list of sources for further information, are also presented.

It includes general information and statistics and descriptions of specific types of cancer. Tips for screening and prevention are given along with the latest research findings. The book includes a section on treatments and coping strategies, plus an extensive list of organizational resources for help and information. While Cancer Sourcebook for Women includes a chapter on breast cancer, the subject is treated in greater depth in a separate volume, Breast Cancer Sourcebook.

                Book Description

The Plains Indian War was one of the most controversial conflicts in American military history, as the US Army faced a tough opponent that challenged it for decades following the end of the Civil War. The Army leadership endured a severe lack of resources, political constraints, an indifferent public, tough environmental conditions, and other problems of the frontier. Army officers and men had to adapt to these constraints, and this period also proved to be a trial of the ability and endurance of the common soldier. This title details the organization, development, training, tactics and command structures of the US Army during its subjugation of the Plains Indian tribes.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent dissection of the US Army in the Plains Wars.......2004-10-10

Osprey's new Battle Orders series is continuing to evolve as a hybrid, somewhere between the earlier Order of Battle series, the Elite series and the Campaign series. So far, each volume in this new series seems to have been put together with a different methodology. Dr. Clayton K S Chun, a lecturer at the US Army War College, offers keen insight into the evolution of the US Army in the period in between the end of the Civil War and prior to the Spanish-American War. Unlike other volumes in the Battle Order series, Dr. Chun does not try to describe the campaigns of the units in question, but focuses almost exclusively on the organization, doctrine and training of the frontier army. Despite the title, this volume is less about the Indian Wars per se than the slow transformation of the US regular army into a more professional force in the late 19th Century. Modern US Army readers might want to consider how the regular army in the late 19th Century dealt with an elusive foe, nation-building and a myriad of other civic tasks - all familiar to American soldiers today in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Dr. Chun begins his study of the frontier army with a short introduction and an enumeration of the mission of each of its three principle branches (infantry, cavalry and artillery). Readers conditioned to thinking that the frontier army was composed primarily of cavalry will be surprised to see that it constituted only 37% of the actual strength in 1876; the much-cheaper infantry was 50% and the all-but-ignored artillery branch was 12%. Dr. Chun then spends seven interesting pages discussing the doctrine and training of the frontier army; as Chun notes, the army's leadership was focused on preparing for war against a European foe and did not believe that intermittent conflict with Indian tribes (i.e. "low intensity conflict") warranted any significant doctrinal revisions. The army's leadership was shaped by the total war mentality of the recent Civil War and held any form of "police actions" in low regard. However, the basis of frontier doctrine rested on a belief in the offensive, executed by converging columns and winter attacks. General Sherman began to change US strategy in 1867 from "pacification" to "total war upon hostiles." Chun notes that the strategy evolved into "selective totality" - where the reservation system was used to contain the Indians and the US Army was used to punish tribes that left the reservation.

The heart of this volume lies in the 32 pages that Dr. Chun devotes to unit organization, which has maps and line and block charts that depict all the major US Army posts and unit dispositions in the West for the years 1867, 1876 and 1884. For example, a reader could find that in 1876 there were two companies of the 19th Infantry with 99 soldiers stationed at Fort Lyon in Colorado. Dr. Chun also details the organization of infantry, cavalry and artillery units from regimental down to squad level. There is a wealth of information in this section, including statistics on desertion (one-third of all enlistments between 1867-1891 ended in desertion; the desertion rate on the Plains was 25-40%, whereas it had only been 14% in the Civil War), cuts in pay and strength authorizations by Congress, frontier posts and Indian scouts.

Dr. Chun also provides a lengthy section on tactics, which indicates that while French Napoleonic-era influences were still strong, Army officers on the frontier were adapting to local circumstances. A good deal of this section focuses on the work of Emory Upton in codifying a post-Civil War doctrine for the US Army; Upton was important for introducing standardized marksmanship training and an attempt to standardize tactical training (previously, mostly done at unit level). Dr. Chun notes throughout this volume that the greatest weakness of the frontier army was inadequate training, although this was beginning to improve by the end of the 19th Century. Although Upton's ideas helped to increase professionalism in the US Army, some of his ideas - such as the concept of "fours" - did not work. The next section, on weapons and equipment is also quite good and details how the Army was plagued with surplus equipment and inadequate funds for new development. Final sections on C3I and unit status for each regiment (including tables on authorized and actual strength) round out the volume. Readers expecting a discussion of individual campaigns such as the Little Bighorn will be disappointed (although there is no shortage of other works on that subject), but Dr. Chun's volume is an excellent dissection of the US Army in the Plains Wars. In fact, I noticed only one significant omission in this volume, namely that the maps did not depict railroads or any civilian towns or cities; it would have been useful to compare the dispositions of the US Army in 1867-1891 with the westward progression of civilization.

5 out of 5 stars Best overall text on the market for L.E. professionals........2004-01-02

This to-the-point book answers many of the questions that concern officers, supervisors and adminisrators serving communities today. Not a re-hashed, warmed-over version of business management theory rewritten in police jargon, as we find in so many other books professing to be "police text". This book addresses issues ("cop things") in the realm of reality (the"cop world"). Don't let the title fool you, although it has much to say about ethics, this text expands on the "real" ethics of law enforcement; the "street level" use of ethics, morals and values in relation to the reality of the job. Each chapter deals with a diffenent core subject; they can stand alone as a lesson. I constantly review portions when met with a difficult challenge. In my estimation, history will hold this text as one of the best sources of information for professional police offices of all ranks. Many agencies issue a copy of this to all new supervisors. This is one book to have in your desk at all times.

1 out of 5 stars This Book Is A Sleeper!.......2001-12-29

If you run out of sleeping pills, read this! Delatre is the King of run on sentences. For proof, check out the 1st sentence on page 76. It's on the Hypothesis of Structural Deviance and contains whopping 143 words!!!! Wow, Edwin! Your English teacher is turning over in her grave! If she is still alive, don't let her read this. It may cause her to stroke out!

This book is for academics looking for research to quote, but certainly not for anyone who wants a practical guide on ethics in policing. Delatre presents a lot of information in an unclear and vague manner. We would be best suited with the Cliff Notes. We would probably have them, too, but Cliff is probably still in a trance over this one!

Delatre offers both sides of several arguments, but at times, fails to take a side. How annoying!

In another book I read recently on Policing, its author says that the best way to relay information is to "be clear, be concise, be gone!" Delatre is not clear, he is not concise and he is not gone! Why, because I am still try to burrow through the last couple chapters of this book.

The only way this book could maintain a respectable, steady volume of sales is if it were required reading, i.e. for a college course.

Seriously, this book could lose half its pages and be much closer to readable. Make your points, give your examples, take a stand, then wrap it up.

3 out of 5 stars More a text book than a book for the general reader.......2001-01-06

This book appears to be used by police academies in training police. It seems to be more of a textbook rather than a book for the general reader.

Police forces throughout the world are at risk of having certain problems. There is always some pressure for police to accept bribes. Police can also slide into habits of using excess force and some times other problems can occur such as simple laziness. One of the problems for any police command is thus to ensure that these problems are either eliminated or minimized.

This book talks about the sorts of reasons why police become corrupt and urges police to develop morale character. One of the chapters for instance looks in part at the question of whether police should accept free cups of coffee from restaurants. On the face of it such an offer would seem a simple measure of gratitude from a member of the public to underpaid officers. The author however indicates that often in such situations the offer of even a coffee may lead to an expectation of something in return. To warn customers of the restaurant instead of giving them parking tickets. To be around if the restaurant has problems. Such a process can lead to police accepting the idea of quid pro quo's and entering into other arrangements. This chapter goes on to explain the mechanics of corruption and why even non-corrupt officers will remain silent in the face of corruption. The police force is a cohesive unit whose members will from time to time face situations of real danger. The need to depend on others can lead to officers falling into the habit of not rating so that they will have support in any dangerous confrontations with criminals.

One of the strengths of the book is that it is filled with thousands of examples in which police can face pressure to do the wrong thing. These examples are carefully chosen and no doubt would in a class setting be valuable for trainee officers.

Other chapters, obviously again intended for class discussion rather than being definitive in themselves are disappointing. One chapter looks at the question of drug enforcement and examines arguments for changing the current policy of prohibition. Although the author presents both sides of the argument with fairness there is no real discussion of the empirical reality and the costs of the policies. His approach is one based on morality and rights rather than looking at the operational problems of policing drugs and the cost of imprisonment. In addition he puts the dilemma as an either or choice between legalization and probation. He seems to be unaware of harm minimization strategies. Another chapter that touches on positive discrimination is also disappointing.

These criticisms are perhaps churlish, as the book does not seem to have aimed at being one read by the general public. No doubt a reasonable text book but not something which would contribute to the debate on how to structure police forces to deal with problems and violence.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for law enforcement.......2000-08-16

This book depicts a geniune need in law enforcement. The need to hire, train, and maintain ethical personnel is explained and stressed to the reader in a way that has been overdue. The occupation of a law enforcement offical world wide has a real need to be a true character , role model, or the public offical that can be trusted. Edwin has a clear style of writing with a no nonsense approach to describe past , present, and future occurrences of police conduct. I believe the criminal justice system would beam with pride and public trust if law enforcement would read and act on the issues and suggestion that Delattre brings forth in this fine book.

I used this book in a research paper for a grade and it helped me alot. My professor commented on the facts I used and how up to date the material was. Needless to say, I did earn an A.
