This is a book I never will forget.......2001-05-19
I have found this book to be a challenging read. It was not the difficulty of the reading, but the moral challenges it brings. I felt the book presented far too many moral issues that are at hand. The book dealt with war, the death penalty, gun control and abortion, as well as many other ideas. I have been forced to re-examine some of my personal views after reading this book.
The book vehemently opposes war. I have to wonder if, at times, this isn't a necessary evil. My guess is that Brown would have suggested passive resistance to Hitler in World War II. I simply have a hard time coming to Brown's conclusion. In the Old Testament of the Bible, God sanctioned War at times. In my understanding of the parable, the turning of weapons into plowshares was meant for the millennium. It is not meant for the current dispensation that mankind is in. We are told in the Bible that there will be wars and rumors of wars until the body of Christ is taken into heaven. I find Brown's comment of trying to bring about his own personal millennium to be extremely arrogant. While war is a terrible thing, I feel we are expressly told that this will happen.
Brown is opposed to guns and believes in gun control. I have to agree that guns in the wrong hands can be used for evil. Is a gun in itself truly evil? I cannot ask the police to go against criminals without appropriate protection. I cannot go as far as to believe that all violence will magically cease without guns. To assume without guns our society will be safe and violence free is to have an overly optimistic view.
I cannot agree with his statement that breaking laws is always appropriate to save human life. To agree to this statement blindly is to become a zealot, and lose good judgment. With this statement members of the anti-abortion movement are perfectly justified in bombing clinics, and the occasional murder of doctors and other medical professionals. Out right murder is never justifiable.
I feel this book is extremely thought provoking. It is radical enough to have created a large discomfort level in my personal belief system. I feel Brown's points are often well made, and thankfully peppered with fact. I feel that too many concepts were approached for me on a personal level. Each chapter presented a different moral dilemma. His writing style attempted to sensationalize points rather than investigate them in a logical manner. I can truly say this is a book that I will always remember.

How Soon We Forget.......2007-09-03
Kuwait in 2007 shows little sign that there was ever an invasion or occupation, and yet, underneath the surface, the trauma lives on. When people tell their individual stories, it is as if it happened yesterday. Current events are still influenced by the invasion, the occupation, and the return of those who were caught outside the country, and separated from loved ones, now knowing if they were dead or alive.
I heard this book recommended, but could not find it anywhere in Kuwait, and had to order it used, from Amazon. After reading it, the modern, characterless city of Kuwait looked entirely different. Here, you can still see bullet holes. There is the wreckage of the infamous Regency Palace. Here is an obscure invasion museum, or a memorial, almost lost and forgotten in the modern bustle of Kuwait. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to get beneath the surface, to the events that shaped the attitudes of today.
Invasion Kuwait: An Englishwoman's Tale.......2001-07-17
One would expect the harrowing experience of living in Kuwait through seven months of Iraqi occupation to have produced a flood of memoirs. But it's been a mere trickle, perhaps because those who survived the ordeal wish to put it behind them and rebuild normal lives. As Rajab's title states, she is a Briton; but having married a Kuwaiti and lived in Kuwait for thirty years, she experienced the occupation as a Kuwaiti (that is, she could remain in her own house, without fear of being taken hostage). From this perspective she could observe the Iraqi soldiers, involve herself in Kuwaiti organizations, and participate in the festivities upon liberation. Her story takes on added drama due to the fact that in her husband had built a well-known private museum in the basement of his compound, filled with antique and valuable items. The museum had been open to the public for years and was much-visited; to make matters worse, her husband was out of Kuwait when Saddam Husayn invaded. Will the author succeed in keeping the museum from being pillaged? (Yes, by sealing off most of it and displaying some third-rate items to marauding Iraqi troops.) First-hand accounts of warfare from the Middle East reveal a pattern of normal life mixed with searing violence (kibbutz children attending school in bunkers; Beirutis at the beach with snippers a few blocks away) and the Kuwait experience is no exception. To those of us not on the scene, this combination remains enduringly mysterious.

A unique and all-too-rare perspective of the Gulf War........1999-07-17
In the plethora of Gulf War books covering the grand strategy of generals, presidents and prime ministers, this book, like so very few others, presents a unique and fascinating account of life in Iraqi-occupied Kuwait both in the first five months of the occupation, prior to Desert Storm, and then during the war itself. It is truly the 'inside' perspective, in no uncertain terms.
Mrs. Rajab and several members of her family - long-term residents of Kuwait, and with the special perspective of a mixed Western-Kuwaiti family - did not have the protection of a large military organisation. They lived day-by-day alongside occupying Iraqi troops and the feared Mukhabarat (Iraqi Secret Police), surviving by the grace of God, sheer good fortune, and their wits. The prospect of sudden and possibly brutal death was ever-present. The fact that many others did not survive the same risks visited upon her gives the book a gravity which strikes home. This is the perspective of the crisis that was forgotten by the world's media in the rush for TV footage of fireworks displays over Baghdad, and bodies on the Basra Road. Soldiers, airmen and Marines of the Gulf War, with all credit due to them, generally lived the fear and danger of combat in periods of minutes or, at most, hours. Mrs. Rajab coped with extraordinary circumstances over seven long months with a strength of will which can only be described as inspirational. Yes, she could have left the country, but she stood by her home against incredible odds. This book is in the class of my own DAYS OF FEAR: The Inside Story of the Iraqi Invasion and Occupation of Kuwait (Motivate Publishing, London/ Dubai, 1997).
Mrs. Rajab has down a great service to the history of Kuwait and the Middle East with this book. Anyone who ever doubted the rightness of the Allied campaign to free Kuwait should read this, and know what horror and terror the people of Kuwait and those who lived there were delivered from. any serious scholar of the Gulf War cannot claim to have his or her library complete without this very readable little book. Thank you, Mrs. Rajab, for a truly relevant book from a remarkable woman.
This is the best book that can be read on the Gulf War........1999-04-08
Mrs. Rajabs style is sincere and human. Her account, unlike other books on the subject, not only talks of strategy, but day to day accounts and problems faced by the people of occupied Kuwait. A masterpeice. I suggest this book not only to those people intrested in the Gulf War, but to those poeple who are intrested in reading about the strength of the Human Will as well.

Book Description
The compelling inside story of Cindy Sheehan's vigil in Crawford, Texas, that redefined the Bush presidency. At the center of it all was Crawford's own local paper,
The Lone Star Iconoclast. The Vigil is an invaluable record of the
Iconoclast's coverage, with Sheehan herself providing a scene-setting foreword.
A high-stakes, blow-by-blow account of the events as they unfolded,
The Vigil lets readers experience this vigil right along with the writers and participants as the paper's publisher (W. Leon Smith) and crew demonstrate a level of professional integrity that-to quote Sheehan herself-"shine[s] like a lone spark of integrity in the prairie darkness."

This is an EXCELLENT BOOK.......2007-01-02
Well, some reviewers who are warmongers obviously have their agendas and their activists who have not read the books they are reviewing. They are part of the Neo-Con conspiracy to keep the American public in the dark about the truth. I am the author of "Land of Childhood's Fears" - a book about the Vietnam War - (just google the title and see) and so I speak with a bit of authority. This book is very true-to-life. It is a glaring example of the attitude of the current administration - THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT US - THEY NEVER CARED ABOUT ANYTHING BUT THEIR OWN GREED. My Web site has video Documentaries you can download FREE - So before you buy the negative reviews on Cindy Sheehan, learn the TRUTH. Read this book, and my book "Land of Childhood's Fears" which you can also get at Amazon. Take a week to read these two books, and your views about the war in Iraq will drastically change - download the videos from my web site and your entire paradigm structure about the country you live in will change. In the Bible, 2 Peter Chapter 3, it says that in the last days, people are "WILLINGLY IGNORANT". It is a shame that people don't WANT to learn the truth, because what they would have to do to ACT on that truth is unthinkable.
pathetic worthless dispicable mediawhore.......2006-09-28
very bad read. Cindy should go back and take and english class. Facts given in book contradict facts published by the wire services AP AFP Reuters, and if you search local texas blogs the disconnect gets scary. I'd call her a mediawhore but I would have to apologize to whores.
"I Want The Truth-as well".......2006-02-23
Cindy Sheehan had every mothers worst nightmare come true. We are "supposed" to be a country of freedom of speech, that includes camping on even a presidents near by lawn. With this in mind i was glad i read this account of Cindy's 26 days. I found that Mr. Smith had told the story very clear and showed great insight to those around at "Camp Casey" .
objective reporting.......2006-02-22
Several of the negative reviews for this book seem politically motivated only and also contain incorrect information. The book, first of all, is not written by Sheehan and she will not profit from sales. Secondly, the book is an accounting of not only the pro-Sheehan Camp Casey but also the pro-Bush/pro-war side of things. It is objective and also contains interviews with some interesting people who were in Crawford, TX last August. The perspectives of the reporters were compelling as well, and one was decidely NOT pro-Sheehan, if you read between the lines. The editor added his comments about the challenges of a small town newspaper with minimal staff taking on the task of covering this event on almost an hourly basis for 26 days. It is a must for journalism classes everywhere.
Knowledgeable and Informative.......2006-02-22
The book tells the story of what actually transpired. The author portrays the situation in a manner that allows one to feel like they were actually there on those days. I like to be able to read a book that allows the reader to formulate their own opinion of the situation instead of being forced into the authors opinion. W.Leon Smith allows the reader to get a very detailed insight into the protest without taking sides. I was impressed with the fact that there was only facts in this book and now a days that is rare occassion. I will keep this book on my shelf and recommend this book to anyone that is willing to allow the truth and facts in their lives instead of someone elses opinion.

Birds of Los Angeles.......2007-05-12
Excellent. This is real book put together with loving care. Also useful for those who sail the coastal waters and who might wonder what kind of little warbler is hitching a ride on the sailboat in San Pedro Bay.
No better beginner's guide for Los Angeles birdwatchers!.......2005-12-23
This book easily deserves a 5 Star rating. It is, I think, the best book to get if you are beginning to get interested in birdwatching and live in the Los Angeles area. First, it is comprehensive - it covers almost all of the birds one is likely to encounter when doing basic birdwatching locally. Second, the illustrations are nicely done and large in size, making it easy for the beginning birder to identify area birds. (Although pictures may seem "better" to the beginning birdwatcher, as you gain experience birdwatching you will eventually learn that illustrations are usually better for birding field guides than photographs.) Third, it is thorough and engaging, each species' listing contains habitat and basic behavior information, (written in a short, concise way - see photos) list of similar species, "quick i.d." guides, and month to month abundance charts. This is all presented in easy to understand, non-pretentious language that is easy for anyone to read, though he also includes a glossary of difficult terms. To round out the complete effort, he includes a few birdwatching sites in Los Angeles (though this is very limited and you'll want to look up more information on each site online), as well as a list of further books you can look at and a list of birds that you can check-off as you go along. Finally, as one would expect of a field guide, the book itself is well made and durable, the spine is sturdy and the pages glossy - a good thing if you end up dropping it along trails (as I have) or read it from cover to cover several times (again, as I have). I disagree with a previous review - it is very lightweight much more manageable than most other field guides. (Amazon's estimate of 9 ounces sounds about right.)
To sum up, this is the book that got my son and I both hooked on birdwatching, and it is still the first book my son (8 years old) chooses to take with him to birdwatch around Los Angeles. It is a superb effort and, at $9.95, a great value. If you remain interested in birdwatching after this guide, you can always "upgrade" to the much more thorough and technical Sibley's Guide to Birds later on. Even though I have Sibley's, I'm looking forward to purchasing the San Diego version of this guide soon!
Usable!.......2000-07-20
I have tried identifying birds with other books before, and I usually gave up in frustration because there'd be, like, 20 birds that mine could possibly be related to, but no exact match. These were mainly books that covered all of North America, or all of the Pacific states.
With "Birds of Los Angeles," I have actually identified several birds! The pictures are big and colorful, the information (habits, habitat, etc.) enough to tell you what you casually want to know. Its dimensions are compact but it is a little heavy, because of the weight of the glossy paper, but not impossible to take along backpacking.
Cleaner air bring back the birders........1998-01-08
20 years ago Los Angeles had over one hundred bad quality days (smoggy days). During 1997 only three bad quality days were called.
I suppose the birds never left the place, but now they are more beautiful then ever, and it is a pleasure to go outside to see them.
This book is a wonderful illustrated identification tool, it will augment your enjoyment of birding through this magnificent region.

Harold Dodge, overweight and pushing 50 hard, loves woman and cars. So when the extremely striking Marianna Perado interrupts his acquisition of a real cream puff--an '86 Maxima that he knows he can slap a $100 detail job on, then resell for an extra $1000--and asks for his help in getting her trade-in back from the hotshot dealer he used to work for, Harold just can't say no. Within minutes, he's up to his ears in dangerous deals and scams that escalate into a carnival of terror. If Florida's Carl Hiassen moved to the seamier side of Los Angeles, this first novel might well be the kind of thing he'd come up with. But former journalist and television writer Philip Reed has already claimed the territory, and is at work on his second mystery about Harold Dodge.
Book Description
With more twists than an L.A. freeway, Philip Reed guides you on a lethal joyride you won't forget....
Harold Dodge, pushing fifty, is a good man. But in a less-than-perfect world -- that is, Los Angeles -- good men sometimes have to do bad things. Just about everyone in the City of Angels has a hard luck story, but when it comes to bad breaks, Harold is rewriting the book.
Now he's in a friend's car -- and in a spot. A pair of hired repo men in a stolen Buick are trying to run him off the freeway and into an early grave. But the cops pull him over first -- a blessing, except for one little thing. Harold's got a dead body in the trunk. That's when his luck takes a turn...for the worse.
It all started because Harold has a weakness for killer legs. And when Marianna Perado in her spike heels asks him to help her "unwind" a rip-off deal at Joe Covo's dealership, where Harold once bird-dogged suckers into buying used cars, he jumps...and lands in a cesspool of corruption.
Harold lives for women and cars -- he just never figured on dying for them. Now he has to add up a pack of lies and hope a scrap of truth comes out in the equation. But Harold lives in a city where everyone's working a hustle, where the only question is who's hustling you. The Santa Ana winds are blowing, and Harold Dodge is feeling the heat.

Elmord Leonard...Move over!.......2005-05-27
If you're an Elmore Leonard fan, you're in for a treat. Reed takes us on a no-holds barred tour of the seamy side of the auto business. complete with fraud, hoaxes, and mayhem.
Bird Dog is Get Shorty on 4-wheels. Once it starts, it just doesn't stop.
Reed is sure-handed writer with obviously great knowledge about the world of auto dealerships. Not only will you be fascinated, you'll learn a few tricks of the trade for next time you have to buy a car!
Only question I have is why isn't Bird Dog already a movie? But I won't worry--one day it will be.
Meet Harold Dodge, a.k.a. Bird Dog.......2000-12-07
"Bird Dog" opens with a glimpse of killer-Mex, Mariana, a raven-haired beauty with red lips and flashing teeth, in stiletto heels. She's out to buy a car, a simple task that leads to mayhem when she is taken advantage of by an unscrupulous car dealer. Enter Harold Dodge, a work mate of Mariana's at an aerospace company. It turns out that Harold has written a book on how to buy a used car, which is based on his previous life as a car salesman, a.k.a. "bird dog," for the car lot where Mariana purchased her car. The fun begins when Harold accompanies Mariana back to the car dealership, then back into the maze of the LA underbelly of chop shops, corruption and greed.
Harold, a quirky but loveable, bear of a man, with fifty in his rear view mirror, can't say no to a beautiful woman. Through tough negotiation, fast action, and sometimes just dumb luck, Harold manages to extricate himself and Mariana from some very hairy situations.
Reed brings his offbeat characters to life and makes the reader a part of their hapless ride through danger. He has a knack for showing the best and worst of his characters, making them real and sometimes tragically funny. Believe me, you'll never look at that nondescript man at the office in the same way again, after you've met Harold Dodge.
"Bird Dog," Reed's first book, is a fast read about a fast ride. If you liked "Bird Dog," read on. The chronicle of Harold Dodge continues in "Low Rider." Don't miss the fun.
The car lover's crime novel........2000-11-11
The book jacket on this little gem describes it as a "car noir thriller", and this is one of those rare instances when the cover blurb nails it. If you want cars, this story is dripping with Mercedes and Maximas and Fords and GMC's and Integra's, even an Escort (!?). If you're into noir, you'll love the seedy downtown LA settings, the bodies in the trunk, the femme fatale seeking revenge -- and an ending that does the genre justice. Finally, it is a non-stop thrill ride through wrecked lives and double-dealing and the law on your tail no matter which way you turn. The hero (always a relative term in noir) is Harold Dodge, who falls hard for a babe in spike heels who's been hoodwinked on an automobile transaction and wants him to "unwind the deal" for her. Unable to resist those killer legs, he agrees. Before Dodge knows it, he's in trouble up to his neck, winds up in jail, almost gets himself killed and manages to get laid like he's never been before, though not necessarily in that order. If you like Elmore Leonard and Jim Thompson, you'll like Phil Reed, too.
I'll never enter a car dealership again!.......1998-10-20
I'm not used to the thriller genre. The book was emotionally draining. It reminded me of a friend's comment about the movie "Blue Velvet": "Some of the characters are such scum you don't want to be on the same planet with them." Whew. I don't know how I'll ever be able to buy a car again! At least they by and large eliminated each other, eventually, but not as painlessly as one might wish. When it's over, how does the occasionally introspective, moralizing hero, Harold figure he stands with God? He's quite a mensch, hard not to like. No wonder his magnetism affects enough women to complicate things for him. Great job setting up for a sequel, too. It 's just that "Bird Dog" leaves so much scorched earth that I can't imagine how Harold can possibly set foot anywhere near LA ever again. Which is perfect, of course, because I have to read the next book to find out. Something tells me that glowering cop Gammon was just warming up in "Bird Dog." Harold had better stay under his radar. Note on irritating speech mannerisms mentioned in previous review: Harold's the only character in the book who peppers his conversation with "i.e." I've known people with at least equally irritating tics, and my impression was that that's all it is: i.e., characterization.
A fast-paced and entertaining read.......1998-10-20
Philip Reed's Bird Dog introduces us to former car salesman turned engineer Harold Dodge. Aptly described as a "car noir" thriller, Bird Dog offers readers a thrilling ride with Harry - one of the most interesting characters I've come across in quite some time - at our sides.
Harry Dodge seems to have two joys and weaknesses in his life - cars and women. So it's no surprise that he lands in hot water after sexy Marianna Perado walks into his life, the victim of a car deal gone sour. Marianna's experience at Joe Covo's car dealership has left her feeling ripped off and cheated. Dodge knows all about car dealers cheating their customers, and he knows about Joe Covo's activities from personal experience. By agreeing to help Marianna unwind the car deal, Harry finds himself in the middle of an elaborate plot of revenge, crosses and double-crosses that play out in the streets of Los Angeles.
There is a little bit of everything in Bird Dog - hot cars, hot women, vengeance, seedy characters, and a plot with as many twist and turns as you might expect in L.A. It's a great thriller, and a different kind of thriller than I've come across. Give this Edgar Award nominated novel a try and get acquainted with Harry Dodge.

Color photos, drawings, and a 'handwritten notebook' approach turn BIRDS into something special: a field guide kids can use to easily learn about birds and their identification. The emphasis on observation goes beyond identification, though, to cover the science of bird flight, natural history, and physiology. A lovely, different kind of children's guide.
