5 out of 5 stars Just buy it !!.......2006-07-09

If you like rice dishes, buy this book. I'm no cook, but I've tried 3 different dishes in as many nights, and they all turned out great.

There're MANY simple, delicious dishes that you can cook up within an hour or less. All I've bought so far is sake (I have most other oriental spices, oil, and what nots).

I just had to get used to cooking w/o salt, cos you use soy sauce alot of times.

Buy it and enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars Great eating!.......2002-09-21

I picked up this book on a trip to Japan and didn't really expect much out of it. To my surprise, it's become one of my all-time favourite cookbooks. It's a great way to start learning about Japanese home cooking. There are also some great recipes for Korean and Chinese dishes. Every recipe I've tried is quite tasty and easy to prepare. It's also great when cooking for 1-2 people or when you're on the go. For years I've thought rice was a side bowl of dry and bland grains. Well, no more! Get yourself a decent rice cooker and get ready for a new way of preparing wholesome, quick, and delicious meals.

4 out of 5 stars Simple cooking, great book.......2002-07-23

I am not a Japanese but my wife and I love eating Japanese food. We bought this book and used it multiple times for cooking dinner. The instruction was clear and the result was tasty. Highly recommended.

PS: We usually just look at the photos in the book to pick the rice bowl that we want to prepare.

4 out of 5 stars A Halo-Halo Treat.......2007-09-12

The author throws together a strangely tasty mixture (halo-halo) of ingredients and comes up with a book unlike any I've ever read. Escober combines melodrama and recipes, culture shock and eccentric characters, to create this strangely likable read. Although at times I was disappointed by the lack of real emotion (where is the true sense of grief when tragedy occurs?), I also appreciated the interesting characters and plot. This book taught me a lot about my parents' culture and gave me some delicious looking recipes to try. A light, fun book, refreshing like the halo-halo dessert.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings..........2006-03-28

I really wanted to like this book as much as past reviewers. The story is good, and the plot twists are as well. But the writing... Sometimes the protagonist sounds like a goofy, corny, not terribly intelligent kid. Then she gets really pedantic when she "explains" her culture to the reader. Suddenly the author surprises you with a great plot twist, but then reverts to contrived writing. I don't fault the writer. I'm wondering -- where was his editor!?! Also, I hope all folks don't believe that "all Filipinos" think or act like this. There are, of course, many exceptions to these descriptions, despite what Ligaya claims.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better..........2005-04-16

In one sense, this is a short novel in large print about a Filipino woman who immigrates to America and shares her recipes with us at the end of every chapter. In another sense, this is a catalog of Filipino history, culture, stereotypes, and clichés.

I'm not sure if any of the characters transcend their assigned labels. That's too bad because there is nothing wrong with using cultural clichés as a starting point if you are eventually going to show us the richer and fuller culture (and persons) that surely exists.

If you strip away the cultural clichés and recipes, you have a very thin novel that reads like a weak stage play. However, if you are interested in understanding Filipino culture, then there is enough to satisfy the curious.

Personally, I had a hard time finishing this book because the plot fell apart in the latter half. One exception was the short vampire story - a true delight if not a familiar one.

Overall, B+ for recipes, C- for plot, C for characterization, B+ for cultural insights, and F for the extensive rehash of cultural clichés (yuk). Some will like it, I did not.

5 out of 5 stars Great food, great story.......2005-03-14

I bought this book mostly for the recipes, and ended up loving the story as well. It was hard to put down! I thoroughly enjoyed not only the lighthearted story, but also the descriptions of Philippine culture and Philippine history and traditions.

Being Filipina-American, I think Escober paints an accurate picture of the frustrations of reconciling mainstream American ("Western") thinking with Filipino traditions and beliefs. I know very little Tagalog, and the use of Tagalog with English was a perfect mix. And while the story did have a couple points that bordered on typical Filipino melodrama, I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard at a book!

Overall, this book is a great lighthearted read that I hope I don't get too messy when using in the kitchen.

4 out of 5 stars not completely my bowl of rice.......2005-03-09

... and yet i finished it in one sitting! I will warmly recommend this book to my "foreigner"-friends who are willing to gain a better understanding of the Filipino ways as well as to second-generation Filipino kids who might just find this book helpful for understanding and perhaps appreciating their parents' quirks. though I will need to caution them about some of the cultural/linguistic info here and there that isn't quite accurate.

unfortunately - even though one might argue that the very existence of this book disproves my impression - i'm mildly disappointed of how the protagonist, throughout the story, appears so eager to "renounce the country of her birth". I feel that the book would not have been any less, had the epilogue been left out. besides, was there really a need for those David Letterman's Top 10s o quasi? the Filipino society is avowingly matriarchal, mind you. so, to all of you "Westerners" out there, better scratch that "equality"-part.

Feeling adventurous? Try your hand at chef and restaurateur Bruce Cost's recipe adaptations from the menus of his Asian noodle-centric Big Bowl restaurants. The book begins with a very useful guide to the special ingredients one needs to follow these recipes, including recommended brands. But take heed--there are more than a dozen pages of them. Still, Cost calls his food authentic and accessible, and, believe it or not, a trip to your local Asian grocery store for a handful of such staples as fish sauce, Shaoxing rice wine, and Chinese dark soy sauce should get you on your way. For the beginner, there are dishes with short lists of ingredients, including Steamed Mussels in Coconut Herb Broth, Glazed Sweet and Sour Eggplant with Sesame Sauce, and Red Braised Beef Short Ribs. The instructions are clear, detailed, and remarkably short.

As your pantry grows, so too can your repertoire. Once you've mastered Big Bowl's recipes for homemade red and yellow curry pastes, the book lists a host of mouthwatering recipes with which you can amaze your friends, such as Red Curry Seafood Soup, Thai Yellow Curry Beef Noodles, and Thai Red Curry Rice Noodles with Lamb and Chinese Chives. Cost recommends incorporating his dishes into your own menus, as well as using them to create entire Asian-inspired meals, and his recipes include helpful guides to how many people each dish feeds as a main course or as part of a larger meal. Classics such as Hot and Sour Soup, Indonesian Satays, and Vietnamese Summer Rolls are delectable and familiar enough to encourage kitchen novices to give this book a try, even if the list of ingredients and instructions for some of the recipes run long. For people who feel quite comfortable with a wok, there is plenty more to keep you challenged. Cost knows what his customers like best and has chosen his dishes carefully. Full-flavored, fresh, and interesting, this is a far cry from the brown-sauce-laden Chinese food available at the corner store. --Leora Y. Bloom

    Book Description

When the first Big Bowl restaurant opened in 1997, its founding partners had one mission: to make good, authentic Asian food accessible to American diners. Tired of greasy takeout and soggy egg rolls, they created an entirely different kind of Asian menu-one based on healthy techniques, market-fresh ingredients, and vibrant, traditional flavors. From steaming bowls of handmade noodles to fiery curries and fragrant stir-fries, every dish at Big Bowl became a delicious celebration of homestyle Chinese, Vietnamese, and Thai cooking.

Now Bruce Cost, the celebrated cook and a culinary partner behind Big Bowl's spectacular food, reveals how to prepare the house favorites in your own kitchen. Beginning with a basic explanation of Asian ingredients and cooking techniques, Cost's beautifully illustrated guide takes home cooks through the simple steps needed to create an Asian meal, whether it's a one-bowl dinner or a multicourse feast for family and friends. From Thai Chicken Noodle Salad to Blazing Big Rice Noodles with Beef to Shanghai Shrimp, all of Cost's recipes are incredibly flavorful yet easy enough for even the beginning cook to master. The instructions are clear, the ingredients are widely available, and the results are dramatic and delicious.

So if you think Asian food at home means little white boxes, think again. Big Bowl Noodles and Rice will show you how to bring the fresh, authentic flavors of Asia to your table any night of the week.

Hailed by Alice Waters as "one of the greatest cooks I have ever known," Bruce Cost is an award-winning restaurateur and chef, cooking teacher, and former food columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle. He currently serves as the culinary partner in Lettuce Entertain You's immensely popular chain of Big Bowl restaurants. Cost is also the author of Asian Ingredients, a comprehensive guide to Asian foodstuffs now available as a companion to this book.

1 out of 5 stars No Kung Pao Chicken.......2006-10-30

Having visited the Chicago Big Bowl for years when I lived there, I decided I have missed my favourite dish so much, that I bought this book. Their signature dish was the Kung Pao Chicken, which I adored.
I received the book today, and was absolutely amazed...there was no recipe for Kung Pao chicken, although the dish was mentioned in the preface. They do have Kung Pao Fish, but the ingredients differ greatly.
Where is the recipe for the chicken!
Plus, the number of photos is a token effort. Every good cook book should have photos of the dishes - this has hardly any.
Too early to tell how the other recipes will shape up, but very disappointed at the moment.

5 out of 5 stars I've cooked more out of this book than any other.......2004-01-06

I got hooked on the Big Bowl as a restaurant originally. Now that I have the book, I use it more than any other. Everything so far is good. I now make the best asian food I know how to find anywhere.

Recipies are sometimes a bit unclear. But the tastes are so good I couldn't live without this book.

5 out of 5 stars At long last the book is finally here..........2000-10-12

While the Bay Area has an abundance of Asian restaurants few compare to Big Bowl in the Mid-West. The books aesthetics are very pleasing and the format is easy to follow. The special ingredients section was very informative in explaining the origins and use, as well as pointing out which recipes call for them. What makes this book such a great reference is the emphasis on using quality ingredients and the cooking techniques are well described and easy to understand. In addition, I also enjoyed the array of traditional and modern adaptations of the recipes and look forward to using this book more. I highly recommend the satay, the freshly prepared peanut sauce is a winner. We only wish Mr. Cost never left San Francisco.

3 out of 5 stars Love the Restaurant, wish the book was as good..........2000-10-06

I am a regular customer at the Big Bowl in Edina, MN. It's a wonderful place, with imaginative, tasty, fresh foods. I only wish this cookbook lived up to the restaurant. Unfortunately, many of the dishes in the book are also available in almost any good Asian cooking book. The dipping sauces - my personal favorites at the restaurant - aren't included in the book and neither are my other favorites from the restaurant.

I will keep going back to the restaurant, but this book is far from the next best thing to being there! Back to the kitchen...

5 out of 5 stars When in Chi-town...do as the locals do...EAT AT BIG BOWL!.......2000-09-13

Having grown up near Chicago eating great food all my life, it wasn't until I had moved away that the first Big Bowl opened its doors. Luckily a friend and school mate of mine who works at the restaurant, invited me in on a return visit. WOW!! The only word I could think of at the time to describe the food. If you live anywhere near a Big Bowl, go! If you are like me in Denver, well outside of their delivery area, do the next best thing, buy this book and make it yourself!

Rice Bowl Women is a fabulous collection of stories, old and new, that speak of the warrior spirit in every woman. From ancient tales of China, where women train in the skills of sword and sorcery, to more modern tales of women achieving power and realizing their inherent strength during the cultural reforms of communism. This book explores the tradition of the swordswoman in the far East, cultures more widely known for their subservient feminine roles.

            Book Description

There is a growing sense of complacency about future food supplies in Asia and such complacency may be unwarranted. While rice productivity may increase due to technological innovations and policies promoting intensive rice production systems, this increase will be limited by a number of factors including withdrawal of land and labor from agriculture to other uses, increased competition for resources, and land degradation. Increased production is unlikely to match the increase in demand for rice because of population growth. This book provides a thorough assessment of the opportunities for increasing land productivity, including crop diversification, evaluates the successes and limitations of the Green Revolution for rice in Asia, and projects economic and technological trends forward over the next three decades.

CJ Heatley is a great photograhper, having his other book the"Cutting Edge". In this book though the photos are stylish with a warm feel to it. A lot of the pics in this book show the silhouttes of the aircraft during twilight hours, but that makes it beautiful. Although much of the aircraft in the book are a bit dated like the Bronco or the F-4 the pics still bring out the best in Marine Corps Aviation. I love it for the style, grace, color, and the way the pictures were taken. A wonderful book for any aviation buff or historian. "IN THE SAME GENRE AS THE PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE TOPGUN MOVIE"

              Book Description

Robert Axelrod is widely known for his groundbreaking work in game theory and complexity theory. He is a leader in applying computer modeling to social science problems. His book The Evolution of Cooperation has been hailed as a seminal contribution and has been translated into eight languages since its initial publication. The Complexity of Cooperation is a sequel to that landmark book. It collects seven essays, originally published in a broad range of journals, and adds an extensive new introduction to the collection, along with new prefaces to each essay and a useful new appendix of additional resources. Written in Axelrod's acclaimed, accessible style, this collection serves as an introductory text on complexity theory and computer modeling in the social sciences and as an overview of the current state of the art in the field.

The articles move beyond the basic paradigm of the Prisoner's Dilemma to study a rich set of issues, including how to cope with errors in perception or implementation, how norms emerge, and how new political actors and regions of shared culture can develop. They use the shared methodology of agent-based modeling, a powerful technique that specifies the rules of interaction between individuals and uses computer simulation to discover emergent properties of the social system. The Complexity of Cooperation is essential reading for all social scientists who are interested in issues of cooperation and complexity

A sequel to his prior book, "the evolution of cooperation".
Iterated prisoner's dilemma is the center of this book,
with a particular focus on the collaboration in the interests of competiion.

No mathmatical background required and usefull referenced included.

4 out of 5 stars Great Companion to'The Evolution of Cooperation'.......2003-09-26

This books covers what Robert Axelrod been up to since "The Evolution of Cooperation." Extensions to the original "Prisoner's Dilemma" have required new agent behaviors for stable solutions.

"Coping with Noise" deals with agents that make mistakes in their defections and cooperation.

"Promoting Norms" covers the fact that pure self-interest isn't a stable strategy and to promote stability requires norms - common behaviors among agents. The most interesting result from his work is NOT that agents should punish defectors - that is intuitive - but agents who DON'T punish defectors (of norms) must be "persuaded" to punish defectors to keep the norm stable. I guess we all need both the carrot and stick!

"Choosing Sides" covers landscape theory - the creation of population aggregates because similar agents tend to clump together.

There are other interesting sections and I like this book. I would normally give a five to this book; however, this is also a thin book. If there were more coverage of the material and a more in depth discussion of other peoples work, I would have given it a five.

                Book Description

This book explains why complex systems research is important in understanding the structure, function and dynamics of complex natural and social phenomena. It illuminates how complex collective behavior emerges from the parts of a system, due to the interaction between the system and its environment. You will learn the basic concepts and methods of complex system research. It is shown that very different complex phenomena of nature and society can be analyzed and understood by nonlinear dynamics since many systems of very different fields, such as physics, chemistry, biology, economics, psychology and sociology etc. have similar architecture. “Complexity Explained” is not highly technical and mathematical, but teaches and uses the basic mathematical notions of dynamical system theory making the book useful for students of science majors and graduate courses, but it should be readable for a more general audience; actually for those, who ask: What complex systems really are?

                    Description:
Mutualistic interactions among species are common in most ecosystems. Despite the ubiquitous presence of mutualism, its evolutionary origin and stability has remained enigmatic. Here, we study this problem by generalizing Doebeli and Knowlton's spatial model for the evolution of mutualism [Doebeli, M., Knowlton, N., 1998. The evolution of interspecific mutualism. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 95, 8676-8680]. We show that spatial environmental heterogeneity facilitates the evolution of mutualistic interactions under a wide range of plausible conditions. Our model exhibits complex spatial patch dynamics, with environmental heterogeneity reducing among patch migration and leading to increased phenotypic diversity. Moreover, under such environmental heterogeneity, we also observe that both mutualism and exploitative interactions can be permanently present in the same population.

                          Book Description

Hawks in the Hand is an American treasure. First published in 1939 when the authors, Frank and John Craighead - pioneers of American conservation - were just nineteen years old, this chronicle of their early adventures in falconry and wild-bird photography was a groundbreaking book that propelled the identical twins to long-lasting international fame as ecologists.

Hawks in the Hand is full of the boundless energy and charming honesty of boys becoming intelligent young men, discovering that the natural world that had been their playground could yield fascinating insights about animal behavior, particularly that of the noble birds of prey. While their discoveries are worthy of any budding scientist, their stories and breathtaking adventures are skillfully rendered and wonderfully entertaining.

These two ingenuous storytellers introduce a cast of unforgettable characters: their friends and partners in adventure - human, canine, and avian - including Comet, the Cooper's hawk, one of their first birds trained to the fist; Bad Boy, the friendly American kestrel; Ulysses, a peregrine falcon; Cactus, the adorable burrowing owl; and Handsome, the osprey, who takes up a surprising friendship with a little skimmer.

In this edition, the first since its original publication, the authors have included dozens of additional photographs as well as excerpts from the log notes that provided the material for their book. Today, Hawks in the Hand is as relevant as ever: an important reminder of how much there is to learn from all wild things and how vital is the connection to the natural world for people of all ages.

A very inspirational and interesting book. Written from the journals of each of the authors, this book will never let go of your imagination. This book not only makes you want to become a falconer like the Craigheads, but to LIVE falconry like they did. As Stephen Bodio in the introduction puts it: " ...[the book]made me and children like me want to go and do, just just passivley watch."

                          A must have.

                          HAWKS IN THE HAND

                          by John and Frank Craighead

First published in 1939, HAWKS IN THE HAND was one of my favorite books growing up. Reading it (again and again) definitely fueled my passion for birds of prey and inspired my interest in bird photography. It's good to see this fascinating book in print again, now that most copies of the original edition have long since vanished from libraries and used book stores.

Although twin brothers Frank and John Craighead are perhaps most renowned now for their work studying grizzly bears in the Yellowstone region, they began their scientific careers as ornithologists. Indeed, their 1956 book, HAWKS, OWLS, AND WILDLIFE was a seminal work in the fields of raptor ecology, examining in detail the intricate relationship between predatory birds and their prey. But long before they became professional biologists, the Craigheads were studying, photographing, and writing about birds of prey. They were audacious enough, while still in their teens, to submit an article and photographs to NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC magazine-and it was published. The recognition they received from the article led to commissions for more articles and eventually to the publication of HAWKS IN THE HAND.

It is interesting that HAWKS IN THE HAND was reissued in the same year that Kenn Kaufman's KINGBIRD HIGHWAY was published. In some ways, the books have a lot in common. They are both, in a sense, coming of age stories about young Americans who have an overriding passion for birds-a passion that they follow unbridled, crossing and recrossing the continent to study birds. And yet the birding travels that the Craigheads and Kaufman took occurred more than 30 years apart. It was a vastly different world in the 1930s. At that time, a native population of Peregrine Falcons still nested across the East, and the Craigheads visited many of their eyries, photographing the eggs, young, and adults-decades later this would provide vital documentation on numerous traditional falcon eyrie sites that had been lost due to DDT and other environmental contaminants. But all was certainly not well in those times. In a poignant 1933 entry in the boys' journal (which was added to this edition), they described an autumn day spent at Cape May, New Jersey. Unlike most fall days now, few bird watchers were present to witness the spectacular stream of migrating hawks passing over. Instead, scores of hunters stood shoulder to shoulder, shooting at every raptor that passed over. "Shells were piled all over the road and hawks were piled all over the running boards of cars and scattered throughout the woods, for no one bothered getting a hawk that fell anywhere but in the road," they wrote. "It seems a crime that they should be so slaughtered."

The equipment available for rock climbing and photography was also much different from what's available today. You won't see any helmets, carabiners, or fancy synthetic climbing ropes in this book. These guys rappelled down sheer cliff, dizzyingly high above the ground, using ordinary manila ropes to reach falcon nests or climbed massive tree trunks with telephone lineman spurs to reach Bald Eagle or hawk nests. One day some nervous spectators, who were viewing the boys climbing to a Peregrine Falcon nest on a lofty cliff, called an ambulance, which parked below them for the entire time they were there. Frank joked, "To heck with them. If we fall, a broom is what we'll need, not an ambulance." And for all their photography, they used 4x5 press cameras-which are about as heavy, awkward, and unwieldy as you can get-but the pictures they took were great.

When I read this book again recently-for the first time in 25 years-I was amazed how well it held up. I highly recommend it.
