Book Description

People with severe sleep apnea may struggle for breath all through the night, not breathing for as long as ninety seconds at a time during their sleep. This syndrome, which affects at least four percent of men and two percent of women, can cause daytime fatigue, traffic and work accidents, deteriorating cognitive abilities, and cardiovascular problems. Yet until now there has been no accessible discussion of the history, physiology, and risk factors of sleep apnea. In this book Peretz Lavie, an expert in sleep research, tells the complete story of sleep apnea for the first time.

1 out of 5 stars sleep apnea.......2007-09-25

I have been diagnosed with apnea and use a CPAP. I bought four books to gain a deeper insight into my condition. While informative this book does not cover the subject nearly as well as Sleep Apnea - Phantom of the Night. I would not recommend purchase of this book. In fact this was the least helpful.

3 out of 5 stars Not What I Was Looking For.......2007-06-27

OK, it's carefully researched and has some interesting historical notes, but I was looking an in-depth exploration of sleep apnea. This isn't it. Also, I noticed the language was slightly odd in places. I think it was translated into English, not always successfully in spots.

5 out of 5 stars Great information on Sleep Apnea.......2007-06-16

I was recently diagnosed with Sleep Apnea and wanted to learn all that I could about it.

This book was filled with information and I would definately recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about this condition.

4 out of 5 stars Very Useful Information.......2006-07-19

When first diagnosed with sleep apnea I didn't know where to turn. This book really helped me. I was an easy read and had alot of useful information. I would recommend it to anyone who suffers as I do.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding book!.......2004-06-01

Restless Nights is a wonderful book. It takes a serious medical subject, sleep apnea, and explains it in a way that is both intriguing and fascinating. The book is a comprehensive yet readable explanation of this potentially serious medical problem, as well as its many serious health and quality-of-life consequences.
Like his earlier book, The Enchanted World of Sleep, (which I found also a captivating read), Restless Nights explains the science of the syndrome, the most current research, implications for public health (such as its impact on transportation safety, work and general quality of life), and proposals for reform of treatment approaches. Most importantly, Lavie discusses the syndrome in the larger context of its impact on general health, particularly cardiovascular disease.
The layperson will find this book readable and engrossing-Lavie's style interweaves scientific information with practical examples, including his historical and literary survey of sleep apnea. Remember Joe from Charles Dickens' The Pickwick Papers?
The medical professional will also find this book must reading. Recent research-some of it performed and published by Lavie and his Technion colleagues-is beginning to shed light on the connections between sleep apnea and general health.
Lavie is particularly well-qualified to write this book. According to the book, he has helped establish and administer sleep research and treatment centers on several continents, including a group of clinics at major hospitals affiliated with Harvard. He is the past Dean of the Medical Faculty of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. I also know from my past reading that Lavie has also been among the pioneers and leading researchers in sleep medicine for the past quarter century.
I recommend this book highly.

Book Description

Snoring is no joke! Snoring is the most common sign of sleep apnea, a potentially fatal sleep disorder that affects approximately 20 million Americans. It is associated with heart disease, high blood pressure, strokes, and premature death, and is a common cause of driving accidents, yet it frequently goes undiagnosed. Snoring and Sleep Apnea is for people who have — or suspect that they have — sleep apnea. It is also written for their bed partners, families, and friends, and for health care professionals involved in sleep apnea management. The book provides answers to key questions, written in easy-to-understand terms, as well as the pros and cons of specific treatments. This extensively revised and updated third edition includes information on new surgical techniques, the treatment of children with snoring and sleep apnea problems, and new oral appliances for relief of snoring and sleep apnea.

4 out of 5 stars Great info - where did they get the pictures?!.......2007-08-03

Great information, well conveyed. One of the authors is a sufferer; the other is the spouse of a snorer so they know of what they speak. Couldn't help but marvel at the grainy, awful, poor resolution pictures that look like they came from a 1960 science book. I guess the small circulation / audience doesn't justify using current technolgy.

Very helpful and I would buy it again.

1 out of 5 stars not what I needed.......2006-06-27

I bought this book because it purported to have a chapter on alternative therapies. The chapter was absolutely useless and insulting to those of us who consider acupuncture and other complimentary medicine before jumping into prescriptions and invasive medical devises. The book was worthless to me. I threw it away.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2004-11-07

Snoring and Sleep Apnea provides a thorough coverage of sleep studies and the use of the CPAP machine. It even offers drugs that can make sleep apnea worse - something not usually mentioned. Chapter 16 offers ideas on Alternative Medicine and Sleep Apnea which is also a topic that is rarely addressed. It discusses alternative medicine in a positive way while still warning the reader and suggesting some basic "rules of thumb" when investigating different treatments.

5 out of 5 stars Doctor, patient's wife team up to create `great resource'.......2004-09-08

If you're struggling to stay awake during the day and find yourself nodding off if you are not actively doing something -- you should read this book.

If you are the bed partner of someone who snores loud enough to
keep you up at night -- this book is a must read.

If you have recently been diagnosed with sleep apnea you should
read this book.

"Snoring and Sleep Apnea" guides you down the path from the first realization that something might be wrong through the
diagnostic process and possible treatment options available to people with apnea.

The authors are sleep specialist Ralph Pascualy, paired with the wife of one of his patients, Sally Warren Soest.

This writing team may seem to be a little different at first look, but they do an excellent job of presenting the medical
information in clear, easy-to-understand language.

Pascualy and Soest take the reader through recognizing the symptoms of a sleep apnea, what to expect during a sleep study, how to locate a board-certified sleep specialist, and why you want to be treated by one.

The writing team provide real world examples of the various treatment options, and go on to explain who might benefit from each procedure or device -- and why.

The 272-page book includes pictures and descriptions of various masks and xPAP machines. It also provides a general overview of the features that can be found on these devices, and the problems that are solved by those features.

Although the information is slightly dated because it has been in print since 2002, most of the general information remains
constant and practical today.

The duo also discuss various surgical options available to people with sleep apnea, including the additional hazards general anesthesia poses on people with sleep apnea. They explore why a procedure that will help a 10-year-old child with apnea is useless to an adult.

The use of short case studies helps the reader to grasp the importance of understanding pros and cons of the treatment options before selecting one.

I cannot praise the frankness with which they discuss dealing with durable medical equipment suppliers. This area often proves to be the weakest link in the patient's chain of treatment. Frequently patients don't understand they have the right to demand better service, that they have the right to select another home health care company if necessary to get the proper level of customer service, as well as patient care, that should be expected.

A home health care company is the company that you will be dealing with if you need replacement parts or technical assistance at 2 a.m. because your machine has malfunctioned.

The authors demonstrate how proper follow-up, coupled with good communication with the home health care company is critical.

Unlike many books, especially books that deal with medical issues, this one can be read from front to back -- or you can bounce around from one chapter to another -- totally out of sequence, finding the information that interests you most.

I wish I had known such a high quality resource was available in the early days of my family coping with sleep apnea and contending with some of the issues it presented. Instead, we walked the narrow road, learning as we went, and often getting bits of conflicting, often inaccurate, information about the disorder.

The authors show compassion to patients and their families coping with this strange condition that has stolen the productive person they used to know and love and guide them along the path back to a productive life.

Ralph Schoenstein has made it his personal quest not only to cure his own snoring, but to investigate everything about the dreaded phenomenon. The author combines humor (ongoing dialogues with his long-suffering wife keep us abreast of his progress) with the most recent reports from the evolving science of otolaryngology; seven eminent physicians have lent their time and knowledge to his study.

You'll discover the most common causes of snoring: a long uvula and a small upper airway; you'll learn entertaining facts: "Normal speech is about forty decibels of loudness and a baby crying about sixty. Loud snorers, however, can hit eighty decibels, which is about the same volume as a jack-hammer or the barking of a dog"; and you'll discover the range of the problem, from the light to the life-threatening, plus myriad gimmicks, clinics, and pills. And Schoenstein gives a thorough rundown on cures, from the low-impact to the drastic (i.e., laser surgery). Stop the Snoring is up-to-date, fun to read, and reliable--only those treatments that have been thoroughly tested are recommended. A list of every sleep disorder center in America is also included for those serious about stopping the snoring once and for all.

5 out of 5 stars An Honest Look at Snoring.......2000-04-29

This was a very honest book about snoring and the problems it causes. I snore and I know I snore loud. Girlfriends, family, and roommates have suffered greatly as a result. I liked this book because the author was very honest about his snoring problem and the problems it creates for others. It is a short book and does not take long to read. I also enjoyed how the author fairly evaluated the many "so called" snoring treatments out there. Masks, surgery, nose strips, tennis balls, all "supposed" cures which did not work for the author or most snorers. Sadly the author had no answers to cure snoring and unfortunately that is the reality. However, kudos for the author for openly discussing a problem many of us suffer from but are embarrassed to talk about.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good book on ICBM for laypersons.......2005-08-27

This decade-old book is perhaps the most comprehensive layman's guide to ICBMs. It traces the origins of ICBMs and details their development in the U.S. Written by a former ICBM engineer who became an aerospace journalist, it also has some pretty cool stuff on the Soviet ICBM program -- for instance, it reveals that Soviet ICBM development was never far behind the American one. (Perhaps helped by effective espionage?) There's also a bit of information on ICBMs in France and China, the only other two countries with these very long-range missiles. Easy to read and a page turner, the book contains a lot of fascinating details about how ICBMs work and the people behind their development. It's a must-read for anyone interested in ICBMs and their interesting history.

In this updated edition of Nikki Keddie’s Modern Iran—itself a substantially revised and expanded version of her classic work Roots of Revolution—the author provides a new preface and a fully annotated and indexed epilogue, reviewing recent developments in Iran since 2003. Keddie provides insightful commentary on Iran’s nuclear and foreign policy, its relations with the United Nations and the United States, increasing conservative and hard-line tendencies in the government, and recent developments in the economy, cultural and intellectual life, and human rights.
                      Reviews of the 2003 edition:
“[An] essential book for one’s working library.”—L. Carl Brown, Foreign Affairs
“Shifting her historical focus from the roots of the Iranian revolution to its consequences, Nikki Keddie has expanded her original classic to include a sharply probing and perceptive guide to more than two decades of tumultuous developments in the Islamic Republic of Iran.”—Gary Sick

5 out of 5 stars Title: A well-balanced and most authoritative book on Iran's modern history .......2006-10-20

I have used Professor Nikki Keddie's Modern Iran in the classes I teach on gender and women in the Middle East. By far, this updated edition is the most comprehensive yet concise and accurate social history of modern Iran available for the students of the Middle East, especially Iran. This is a well-balanced account of the past two centuries of Iran, written in a lucid and accessible language. Throughout its 12 chapters and conclusion, it remains keen on the role of Iran's internal, regional and international politics, religion and Shii discourse, secular as well as religious intellectuals, socioeconomic factors, culture, women and gender. Highly Recommended.

Nikki R. Keddie's MODERN IRAN couldn't be more timely. It offers intelligent and balanced analysis of major developments in twentieth-century Iranian history. Moreover, its comprehensive and readable coverage will help the reader understand the Iran of today.

I am a university instructor and former student of Professor Keddie. I use this book for two of my classes on modern Middle East history and modern history of Iran. Professor Keddie's "Modern Iran" is without a doubt the most updated account of Iran's history during the past two centuries. Even more important, it covers the post-revolution period until the end of Khatami's presidency which makes it a valuable teaching tool. Furthermore, it is easy to read and in this context I usually receive positive comments from my students. If you want a historical overview of Iran, as an important world player and regional power, this is where you need to start.

this is an excellent book: authoritavie, accessible, and balanced... written by the greatest living scholar of Modern Iranian history. Definately the book to start with if you are looking for an overview of Iran in the last two centuries.

As I'm writing this review in mid-2006, Iran is a country that has a great deal of influence in world affairs. Like Iraq, most people (especially Americans) would benefit from learning as much about Iran as they can.

That being said, Modern Iran should be on the reading lists of many, but it will take much more than this book to really gain an understanding of Iran. It's kind of a cheap shot to criticize a history book for not covering enough material. How could any one book adequately cover an entire country's history? I am criticizing this book largely because the amount of material left out really surprised me. Things like the Iran-Iraq war or the actual revolution itself were not covered very well at all. I feel as though I have learned from reading this book, but not as much as I should have.

For readability, I was really let down by this book. The way that Keddie presented this material was incredibly difficult for me to navigate. I read four other books from the time when I started reading Modern Iran and when I finished. I never read more than one book at once anymore, but there were four different times when I had to stop reading this book and pick up something else (and I'm a huge nerd that loves reading about this stuff in his free time, so I find this particularly troubling).

I actually felt that I came away with a better understanding of Iran from Pollack's book The Persian Puzzle. These are the only two books devoted exlusively to Iran that I have read, but the Pollack book was much easier to read and explored topics in much greater depth.

The negative aspects aside, I would still recommend this book to others. But I would recommend reading Pollack's book first.

3 out of 5 stars Modern Iran: Roots and Results of Revolution.......2006-03-08

University of California historian Keddie published the first version of this book, titled Roots of Revolution, in 1981, and a generation of students has read her work in an effort to make sense of revolution in Iran. With Modern Iran, Keddie updates her study to take into account the Islamic Republic's first quarter century.

Modern Iran begins with a brief sweep of Iranian history. Subsequent chapters examine the rise of the Qajar dynasty in the nineteenth century; the period of upheaval and constitutional revolution at the turn of the century; and then the development of dictatorship in the twentieth century.

Keddie's narrative is lucid and generally accurate. Her account of nineteenth-century Iran provides a good, accessible guide for the non-expert, curious about modern Iran's early history. However, she replicates mistakes made in the original, as though two decades had not passed. For example, she says the Iranian telegraph system followed the British-Indian line through Iran when, in reality, the first Iranian lines predated the British effort by a decade. She repeats her assertions trumpeting the importance of the late nineteenth-century pan-Islamist reformer Jamal ad-Din "al-Afghani," without mentioning the dispute among historians over his importance.

Omission and bias then handicap the narrative as Keddie addresses events during her lifetime, that is from the 1950s on. Keddie's failure to address the Cold War context undercuts her sympathetic analysis of Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh's 1951 oil industry nationalization and also her condemnation of the U.S.-supported coup two years later, which unseated Mossadegh. She glosses over the Soviet occupation of northwestern Iran and ignores Mossadegh's flirtation with the former Soviet Union and his encouragement of mob violence.

Keddie's treatment of the Islamic revolution is egregious. As Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini consolidated power, his militias executed hundreds of officials and intellectuals while Iranian newspapers carried photos of their corpses. These atrocities merit a mere four sentences. Keddie presents the multi-billion dollar Foundation of the Dispossessed, formed from the confiscated fortunes of the shah's family and many supporters, as an economic engine akin to the Peace Corps, never mentioning its corruption or its crushing of labor unions. Keddie also ignores the foundation's role in financing Hizbullah.

Much of her political analysis is wrong-headed, even dishonest. She terms President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani (1989-97) a pragmatist who sought to promote technocrats and calls his five-year economic plans "successful," despite the brain drain, unemployment, and corruption that characterized his administration. She also omits mention of Rafsanjani's role in Iran's covert nuclear program or his threatened first use of an atomic bomb against Israel. She is likewise sympathetic to current "reformist" president Mohammad Khatami despite his failure to implement any substantive reform and his silence in the wake of crackdowns against democrats and dissidents. When Keddie speaks of "new independence for girls and women," she forgets to note that, unlike the women in other Middle Eastern countries, those in Iran are fighting to regain rights they once had.

Keddie concludes by juxtaposing Iran's recent "pragmatic and realistic" policy with the "ideological and threatening" stance of the United States. The increasingly frequent anti-Islamic Republic demonstrations taking place in Iran, coupled with voter turnout of less than 10 percent in many provinces in this year's parliamentary elections, suggests that many Iranians have a different view of the results of the Islamic Revolution.

                      5 out of 5 stars Accurate book.......2005-04-16

This is a great book by a true Iranian expert. Professor Keddie knows Iran well. She is not afraid to tell things that some Iranians do not accept or want to believe. Most of her thesis is based on massive amount of research. This is a very good book for those who know Iran well but might be too hard to read for those with little knowledge of Iran or the MIddle East. I enjoyed reading it and learned a lot even though I studied the subject for years at Harvard and UCLA. One of the better books about Iran.

3 out of 5 stars Informative but too general.......2004-07-27

I like the book by Keddie, but she has stopped short talking about Iran's role in international terrorism. She has devoted only three paragraphs about Islamic Republic's actions in terrorising most of the world. She also says that Iranians believe this myth that the United States under Carter's Administration brought the revolution to Iran. This is not a myth Prof. Keddie, the Carter administration with the help of its Europeans allies brought Khomeini to Iran. Today we are witnessing the same compliance and appeasment by former national security advisor to Carter. Please be little more accurate and try to present reality as it appears.
