Book Description

Besides the usual parenting challenges, parents of disabled children face added obstacles that can tax the resolve and resources of even the strongest families. The author has developed a powerful system for obtaining dramatically better care for children with one or more serious disabilities. Parenting Your Complex Child reflects the experience and knowledge she has gained through decades of navigating a sea of complex medical, educational, occupational, and social issues while working with disabled clients and with her own son. Morgan's unique tracking and documentation tools let parents adapt to their child's challenges, create routines that support the child's needs, communicate those needs to busy professionals--and be taken seriously by them.

The book also helps parents lay the groundwork for care to continue after they themselves can no longer provide it. Compassionate, practical, and proven, Parenting Your Complex Child helps parents ensure that life-changing decisions are based on the best interests of the child--and on the best information available.

"This book is so much more than a list of suggested responses to particular behaviors. It's a detailed guide to understanding your child and building a place in the world for him or her from the ground up. Truly an amazing feat by any measure." -- from the Foreword by Kate Crow, MS, CGC, Genetic Counselor, Kaiser Permanente Genetics

"This is a thoughtful, thought-provoking, well-written and really helpful book. It will be of great interest, and of great value, to both parents and professionals. Well done!" -- Bernard Rimland, Ph.D., Director, Autism Research Institute; Founder, Autism Society of America

"Lots of good information in navigating the school systems and working with the medical community." -- Temple Grandin, Ph.D., author, Thinking In Pictures: and Other Reports from My Life with Autism

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a book about parenting those with complex needs.......2006-09-15

I thought Peggy Lou's book was great!! I have a son with down syndrome and autism and this book gave me so much information. Peggy Lou gave me encouragement about getting out in the world and not to be afraid to help my son make a difference in our community.I home school my son so getting out is good for both of us! She has great ideas all the way through her book about doctor visits, school meetings, going out in public, strategies that helped her with caregivers and the list goes on. She seems to be a wonderful mother and advocate!!!

5 out of 5 stars A powerful, different system for gathering information about a child and planning for daily life.......2006-09-12

Here's a powerful, different system for gathering information about a child and planning for daily life: Morgan is both the parent of a complex child and a professional working with special-needs clients, so her dual expertise lends to a book which covers working more effectively with doctors, caregivers, and others. Create a life that supports both child and the entire family using the tips in Parenting Your Complex Child.

5 out of 5 stars What the "Billy Rays" of the World Have To Teach Us.......2006-05-06

I am a friend of Peggy Lou Morgan and Larry her husband. I have worshiped with her in church and my wife, Dorothy, and I have been guests in their home. A more lengthy review will be posted on Peggy's blogsite. This is a painful and personal account of her struggles to lovingly care for a human being others woould think unlovable. Her persistent struggle with herself and the world of professionals is carefully documented. This book should be required reading by the professionals whose lives touch the world of the "Billy Rays" and their caregivers. Her journey reminded me of the observation made by Professor Stanley Hauerwas of Duke University. He wrote of his worship experience with "retarded" people, people with Downs syndrome and the like. What he wrote stuck with me. He wrote that they have more to teach us about ourselves than themselves. What we truly are comes to the surface as we try to relate to them as Christ taught us. In essence it is this: To love another as Christ loved us is so difficult that we are made to realize that we must have the Lord's Spirit in us to even come close to being a loving person. The "Billy Rays" of the world, and other difficult persons, may be used by the Lord to test us. Only such encounters with "the fourth kind" (?) will we know if we pass the test of love.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read, well written, very practical.......2006-04-25

This book is so practical, with great insights from personal experience, written intelligently and with compassion, and contains excellent suggestions and insights, not only for parents, and relatives of special needs children, but for professionals. This should be in the library of both the parents who have such children, and the professionals who work with them.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read for Everyone.......2006-04-11

This book not only presents a real world solution of advocacy for parenting; but also for professionals, relatives, and others who really need to know the right questions to ask before forming opinions.

Book Description

The Black Devils March is an account of how the 1st (and only) Polish Armoured Division in the West under the leadership of General Stanislaw Maczek, arose out of the ashes of defeat and while attempting to avoid the internal politics of the Polish Government in Exile, was able to return to Europe in August 1944 on the side of the Western Allies. In Europe the Division achieved glory, honour and victory but was unable to liberate Poland owing to the politics of the post-war settlement in Europe.

The account of the formation and combat service of the Division is fully researched from Polish, English and German sources, and includes training in Scotland, the unit's sharp introduction to warfare in the Normandy bocage, the Falaise Gap and Hill 262, the advance into Belgium and Holland, and final victory on German soil. The text is supported by nearly 100 photographs (many previously unpublished), maps, and detailed appendices, including a list of the Division's medal recipients. In addition, there are four pages of outstanding colour profiles showing the camouflage and markings of the unit's tanks and other vehicles.

The politics of the Polish Army are examined as well as the historical legacy of the Polish soldier in exile.

Much of the book was researched from hard-to-find Polish sources. The text is supported by 4 pages of colour AFV profiles, nearly 100 photographs (many previously unpublished), maps and appendices.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent appraisal of an overlooked formation.......2005-07-22

Whilst the bare outline of the existence of Polish troops in NW Europe during the 1944/45 campaign is known by many, Mr McGilvray's book puts 'flesh on the bones'.

The author is to be praised for his insight into the background to the formation of the division, and interwar Polish politics. The creation, equipping and training of the division is covered in great detail, followed by an exhaustive account of the campaign in NW Europe, mostly based on Polish and German language sources.

The text is complemented by over 100 photos, reproduced very clearly and aided by the book's large format.

Overall, a praiseworthy effort to delve deeper into the tangled web of Polish involvement in the Allied cause during WWII.

I must add that contrary to another review on Amazon.com of this book, I found the book well laid-out and free from many noticeable errors!

2 out of 5 stars Big Book - Bigger Disappointment.......2005-07-19

I was really eager to learn something about General Maczek and the 1st (and only) Polish Armoured Division in the Second World War. Unfortunately, this book failed to live up to my expectations. I know no more about General Maczek now, after reading the book, than I did before, except that he is the only World War 2 Polish General to live to see Poland regain its freedom. Alas he was then too frail to return to Poland.

The book is basically a summary of each and every river and canal the Division crossed and the names of all the towns liberated in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Even the description of the battle for the Falaise Gap failed to satisfy my curiosity. And I expected a lot more to be said about how the Polished Armored Division accepted the surrender of the Nazi Navy at Wilhemshaven.

Helion Publishers should be exceedingly embarrassed by the dreadful editing job. The text suffers from repetitive repetition of words in the same or succeeding sentences and gross spelling errors that are a major distraction to the reader.

Although the author's name seems to be English (Scottish?) the book reads as if it had been composed in another language and then poorly translated into English.

Finally, the large format book size inconveniences the reader.

I guess I gave it 2 stars for "effort" - I'm not sure!

I recommend this book to all military historians. It contains the typical recorded historical facts of the Italian campaign from the American allies of data received from the Polish II Corps and the British Eighth Army.

The only draw back is the quality of paper it is published on, and the softcover format of the book. Most of the diagrams and maps could be printed much clearer on better quality paper and therefore would greatly increase the value of the book.

5 out of 5 stars A Refreshing Debunking of Myths.......2003-09-11

Most western accounts of the German attack on Poland end up repeating tales straight out of German propaganda. These include the myth of Polish cavalry charging German tanks, and the myth about the Polish Air Force being destroyed, largely on the ground, in the first two days of combat. Neither of these oft-repeated tales is true. While the authors do point out that some Polish military thinkers tended to underestimate the significance of Panzer divisions, the same held for many French, British, and yes, German military thinkers before the war. Nevertheless, the Poles possessed the potent Bofors 37 mm antitank gun, but not enough to make a difference in the war. The authors also discuss temporary military successes in the Bzura campaign. In the end, the German victory over Poland, and also later over much of Europe, stemmed from a combination of the former's industrial superiority coupled with the failure of western Europeans to take Hitler seriously.

This small book is great. It covers the formation, training and combat of the SS-Heimwehr Danzig. this small unit once saw itself as the defence troop for the "Free City of Danzig." Its formation began in 1939 as the polictical tensions between Germany and Poland increased. Their establishment and a detailed account of their deployment in the Polish Campaign. And then their absorption into the SS Totenkopf Division.

This book is written from eyewitness accounts by participants and reprints of secondary literature. The translation has not been edited in any way. A must read...

From the author: This paper examines the role of the conservative foreign policy establishment in the decision-making process leading to the Nazi invasion of Poland in September 1939. Post-war statements by German diplomats portrayed the conservative elite as reluctant participants in Hitler's drive to war. However, an examination of the foreign policy views of German conservatives reveals a significant degree of convergence with Nazi goals in their desire to revise Germany's post-Versailles borders with Poland. In order to understand the role of the German diplomatic elite, it is also necessary to understand the degree to which foreign policy was subject to the same "polycracy" of decision-making instances that characterised the structure of the "Third Reich" in general. While Hitler had relied on the conservative elites, including the Foreign Ministry and the military, their influence on decision-making was waning by 1938-1939.

"I did not, I wish to state, become a journalist because there was no other ‘profession’ that would have me. I became a journalist because I did not want to rely on newspapers for information.” Love, Poverty and War: Journeys and Essays showcases America's leading polemicist's rejection of consensus and cliché, whether he’s reporting from abroad in Indonesia, Kurdistan, Iraq, North Korea, or Cuba, or when his pen is targeted mercilessly at the likes of William Clinton, Mother Theresa (“a fanatic, a fundamentalist and a fraud”), the Dalai Lama, Noam Chomsky, Mel Gibson and Michael Bloomberg. Hitchens began the nineties as a “darling of the left” but has become more of an “unaffiliated radical” whose targets include those on the “left,” who he accuses of “fudging” the issue of military intervention in the Balkans, Afghanistan and Iraq. Yet, as Hitchens shows in his reportage, cultural and literary criticism, and opinion essays from the last decade, he has not jumped ship and joined the right but is faithful to the internationalist, contrarian and democratic ideals that have always informed his work.

              5 out of 5 stars A Brillaint Writer!.......2007-07-05

Every time I think about Hitchens defense of the war in Iraq, I always ask myself why someone so brilliant can support such a war. In this book, I start to understand the person. His journey, and why he puts some ideas above others.

"You have not lived until you have experienced Love, Poverty and War." This book, like most of his work, put in me a spell of deep thinking for awhile.

I think Hitchens has upset everyone at some point with his writing. It's always brilliant and well thought out. I highly encourage you to read this book. See some of these issues through his eyes.

4 out of 5 stars Ready for contrarian views?.......2007-01-11

Ever the iconoclast, Mr. Hitchins takes aim at some of our most cherished idols. So Prime Minister Churchill was not nearly as brilliant as he is being portrayed, particularly in the US? Christopher Hitchins gives a compelling, contrarian viewpoint.

At time a bit too verbose, the book still gives hours of interesting reading - if you like to entertain contrarian views.

5 out of 5 stars A literary and political treat.......2006-11-22

Christopher Hitchen's style of writing is so elegant, flowing, and humorous that reading his papers is a literal treat. I often feel sad when I see the end of one of his essays approaching. Being absorbed in his prose is too much fun. It's like having to step out of the hot tub.

One thing I will always love in particular about his writing style is his deft use of the generalization. It's only because of Hitch's immense knowledge that we allow him to get away with off-the-cuff slurs, such as when he flippantly throws around words like "thug" or "stupid" to describe his opponents. From a Coulter or a Moore we'd consider this sort of name-calling juvenile and petty, but the words are so much more poignant when coming from a person who actually knows what he is talking about.

Not every essay in this book interested me. Hitchens' own interests stretch far and wide, and as a result his essays can sometimes get a bit esoteric. I greatly enjoyed his political works, but I'm perfectly willing to admit that I skipped some of his other articles altogether. Especially in the "Love" chapter, a section which consists mostly of fawning praise for Hitch's literary heroes. The most fascinating essays were his deconstructions of Zionism, the fascist historian "and great historian of fascism" David Irving, and of course, his most infamous target, Mother Theresa.

I consider myself on the right of the political spectrum. Not a crazed libertarian, but basically a moderate conservative who cares a lot about morality and ethics in politics. Hitchens' best political writings transcend the political spectrum, and are fascinating and sometimes frustrating simply because of their contrarian nature. Are the Jews really better off with Israel than they were before, he asks. Is Winston Churchill really a genius? Is there a moral equivalence between Al Queda and American foreign policy? They're provocative matters to explore, and Hitch deals with them all, and many more, in a manner that is neither polemic nor indifferent but simply... rational. With so many tired talking points and conventional wisdom floating around these days, it's truly refreshing to read the words of a man who can only be accurately described as "independent."

4 out of 5 stars anybody care to take on Hitchens?.......2006-10-19

Of all the people I have read sufficiently enough to judge, Christopher Hitchens is probably the one I would least like to debate. His knowledge about seemingly almost anything, his wit, his command of the language, and his taste for sanguinary conflict make Hitchens obviously a formidable foe. These previously published essays demonstrate him at full potency, and many still have plenty of bite years later. Hitchens must have had great satisfaction and anger at the same time when taking on Churchill, Mother Teresa, Michael Moore, Noam Chomsky, JFK, history teaching, and others.

The Churchill essay was a great surprise when first published in 2002, at least to many of us who placed Churchill among the greatest people of the 20th century. Except for Mother Teresa's, many of the other essays on individuals were less surprising in attitude and thesis, yet they usually made solid arguments, with potent and entertaining prose that sometimes verges on piling on the hapless victim.

The essays cover far more than just political topics. Book reviews and introductions to books form a nice diversion. In several cases, such as an essay on Waugh, I did not know enough to give the topic justice and skimmed on to another. The piece on Joyce for the 100th anniversary of Bloomsday may not quite provide the perspective you expected.

The biggest unanticipated delight was Hitchens' dip into some non-intellectual waters. The piece on Route 66 was exceptional, as was his meander along Sunset Blvd.

The section on War is both timely and dated. Hitchens' visit to North Korea in 2000 reads almost as current events here in 2006, with the rumored nukes and other spectacles. For the situation in the mideast, covered in multiple essays, the writing is powerful, as usual. However, I must admit to some Iraq and general mideast fatigue, and thus couldn't get into the arguments as much as I should have.

5 out of 5 stars Take a journey through the exigencies of love, poverty and war with the acerbic essayist Brit native Christopher Hitchens.......2006-10-11

Honesty is still the best policy even when written by a noted journalist living in Washington DC! Hitchens is an atheist, secularist and first class detector of hypocrisy, evil and deceit! You may not always agree with this 21st inheritor of the mantle of such writers as George Orwell but he will engage your mind, soul and heart!
This collection of essays culled from Hitchens' articles in Vanity Fair,
the Nation and other prominent venues for his talents is divided into three parts:
Part One-Hitchens gives us several book reviews of biographies of some of his favorite writers from Marcel Proust, Kingsley Amis; Graham Green; Aldous Huxley: James Joyce and Graham Greene. He also takes a look at the life of the Communist Trotsky. Hitchens evidences his broad literary learning in these brainy articles.
Part Two: In this section deemed "Americana" Hitchens takes to the wide open American road. We go down Sunset Boulevard with Billy Wilder; take a trip on what was once Route 66 and look at the laws governing New York City. We also read his reviews of Bob Dylan's oeuvre; discover the pleasures of Hitchens' appreciation of Saul Bellows' classic The Adventures of Augie March and revist the land of Civil War reenactors.
His review of the Martha Stewart empire is priceless. He also writes judicious and on target attacks on the likes of Michael Moore and Mel Gibson. Several other articles on figures from Mother Theresa (highly controversial) and the Dalai Lama are worth reading even if you disagree with them.
Part Three is the most poignant of the three sections of this large book.
In it Hitchens reports on the tragedy of 9-11; takes a well informed look at the gruesome situation in the Middle East and its horrible madmen incarnated in such tyrants as Ben Laden and Saddam Hussein.
