Book Description

Pandemonium: A Journey to the New World is a true story about the impact of the Communist takeover of Czechoslovakia on three generations of a prominent Prague family. Told from the perspective of Edita—a physicianÂ's daughter, a scientistÂ's wife, and a mother of two young children—the story describes the insanity, frustration, and desperation associated with living under a corrupt socialist regime. There was the ingenious rearranging of the family apartment to hide Chippendale furnishings and family affairs from the jealous neighbor. There are the devastating details about how EditaÂ's father, a world-renown surgeon, was denied a livelihood because of his refusal to conform to the world that does not make sense to him. Finally, there was the revelation that even family members cannot be trusted. The scenes range from comic to heartrending to bittersweet. In the end, Edita and her family triumph over the system and escape oppression.

Follow Edita over the course of her life as she
remembers her oppressed beginning in the war torn
Eastern European country of Czechoslovakia. A
foundation that began with her emotionally distant
mother that fell from wealth and her loving father who
was a physician and a political rebel. Edita would
grow to appreciate her father's wisdom to seek out the
whole truth instead of taking the Communist word at
face value. Although her life would never be the same
after his premature death, Edita knew that she must not
let her children face the same future. But would she be
smart enough and strong enough to travel with her
children and husband over the border of Czechoslovakia
never to return?

What an absolutely amazing feat of heroics by an
average mother that wanted the best for her children.
This book made me realize, as an American, just how
much I have taken some things for granted. Reading
about Edita's trials and tribulations was an eye
opening experience. To be a silent witness on the
frozen landscape of her home country, I felt almost a
kinship to Edita's spirit, for that is universal. This
book, although full of bitterness and heartache was a
refreshing read, so different from anything I've been
exposed to. What a life lived and so it continues...

Review by Monty R. Ferbert
Author of Zorrana's Quest
and Avid reader.

Apina Hrbek takes you for a hair-raising ride into the reality of live under Communist oppression. Edita's callous mother was unable to cope with the lost of her wealth and took her anger out on her family.

Once the walls of Berlin fell, the Soviet Union felt apart and the Velvet Revolution was in place in the new Czech Republic, Edita in vain challenges her sister Nela for some of the family's reclaimed wealth given back to them by the post Communist government. But Nela turns out to be the hypocrite Edita thought her always to be.

In the end Edita realized how uncaring her mother was about her older daughter and her grandchildren. Edita's sister stops at nothing to keep the family wealth for herself.

What Edita's children as adults say about dear Grandma and her indifference for them is both shocking but true to the characters in this story.

A five star must read for every American that truly values freedom. Live lessons are taught throughout this heart felt story as Edita makes the ultimate choice. Freedom at all costs.

Apina Hrbek, author of "Pandemonium A Journey to the New World" takes you on a journey into a world of Communist controlled Czechoslovakia, and you begin to understand the meaning of the word Pandemonium. Follow the story of Edita as she deals with a helpless dependent mother that becomes bitter when the Communist government steps in and takes her family's fortune. Edita falls victim to the backlash of her mothers madness being told that she will never be smart enough, pretty enough or good enough for anyone to love. Her kind father that refuses to conform to the Communistic way of thought is shunned by his neighbors and peers and eventually kept from practicing medicine. It is through him that she is able to think for herself and not follow policy doctrine as her sister chose to do. As neighbor turns against neighbor, and friend against friend, Edita realizes that no one can be trusted. As an adult, Edita, her husband and children escape the cruel reign of the Communist regime with dreams of a new life in America. Facing and conquering the hardships and obstacles of this new country prove to be a challenge, but Edita and her family are able to overcome. A great read that should remind Americans of how lucky we truly are.

Review By Joseph Frank Baraba

Apina Hrbek writes from the heart. Her introduction in the book is one of the best I've read in years. I urge everyone to read this, digest it and learn what it is to be " FREE."
The great love Edita has for her father is very touching. But yet at the same time trying to get and receive love from a mother who could be at times cold, cruel and sadistic. At one point telling Edita she loved her sister more than she loved her. Her mother couldn't let go of the past, loosing everything to the communists and in her warped mind taking it out on Edita. Which was very sad and tragic. She couldn't see she had a loving husband and two daughters who loved her, she was blind to this fact. No matter how Edita tried to please and show her mother she loved her, she was still rejected. Edita's father was a great man, trying to do his best to ignore his wife's rants and raves. He taught Edita that there was another world out there. He gave her books to read and study. He was a very wise man full of love for his children.I don't know anyone who can feel the feelings Edita and Patric felt when they crossed into Italy into "FREEDOM." It must have been a joyous feeling. I felt their anguish and tears and yes great fear of being caught. I rooted all the way for them and their children. Fearful they wouldn't make it, but they did with God's help and their determination to be "FREE."
I highly recommend this book to read. It'll bring a tear to your heart. I give it 5 *****[...]

Pandemonium: A Journey to the New World

Written by: Apina Hrbek

Personal Freedom is something that Apina Hrbek has learned to live with and without, for she was born and raised under Communist rule; however, managed to escape to freedom in America, with her husband and two children.

Pandemonium: A Journey to the New World is a story that will draw the tears from deep within you. It is a story of an infant girl born shortly before the Communists take over of her country's government, which has a tremendous effect on the rest of her life. Her mother, born into wealth, loses all riches once the Communists begin their rule. Due to the loss of her wealth, the infant girl's mother begins to direct her anger onto her child, through extreme verbal, mental, and emotional abuse. Throughout her childhood, her loving and gentle father is unaware of the situation his daughter endures at the hand of his wife. .

Over the course of time, this same child grows up, marries, has her own children, and escapes to freedom. Her achievement of freedom comes at a very high price of many sacrifices and dangerous predicaments. However, she faces each obstacle with determination, faith, and a zeal for the protection of her children, who are her priority in life.

Though I could leave the review on this note, it would be a great injustice to the author, Apina Hrbek. This is because the book, Pandemonium: A Journey to the New World is not simply about escaping the Communist rule and achieving personal and physical freedom. In my own opinion, it is more a tale of achieving a deeper freedom within ones very being.

I have a favorite quote from this book that is, "Mental oppression is all the more dangerous because it is a silent killer." Though there is a mental oppression that Edita is subjected to from her mother and their government, in reality it is deeper than that. This quote speaks to me of a mental oppression in which an individual allows himself or herself to be placed under, by surrendering their very persona through living in fear and not following their dreams, speaking their opinions, or sharing theirs thoughts. I gleaned from the book that mental oppression begins when we quit on our own ideals and beliefs, and silently follow the standards, ideals and visions of another..

Those of us fortunate enough to live in the United States of America, and enjoy the freedoms such as we do, would do well to heed the words of Apina Hrbek as she so eloquently shows us the vast difference between our freedoms and those who have survived the Communist rule. Yet, we must also ask ourselves if this is the only lesson contained in this story. I must say that I do not believe it is. Personally, I find the lesson to be more of the freedom to speak, the freedom to pursue our dreams and the freedom to choose life, in all of its beauty.

It has been my honor to read this book. Apina, I have the greatest respect for you as an individual and as a citizen of the United States.

Book Description

Written by Swords to the Knight's Cross holder and last regimental commander Otto Weidinger, Comrades to the End is the complete history of SS-Regiment "Der FŸhrer." One of the original infantry regiments of the pre-war SS-VerfŸgungstruppe (Special Purpose Troops), "Der FŸhrer" was formed in 1938 and fought throughout the war as a component of Division "Das Reich." Being among the most successful and decorated regiments of the Waffen-SS, this complete history was written with the full assistance of four highly decorated regimental commanders. In addition to Otto Weidinger, portions of the text were contributed by Georg Keppler (Knight's Cross), Sylvester Stadler (Swords to the Knight's Cross) and Otto Kumm (Swords to the Knights Cross). From its creation from primarily Austrian recruits through the Western Campaign, to the bitter battles in Russia where it was almost completely destroyed, the authors explain the engagements of this famous unit in full detail. Later it fought in Normandy and finally in Austria at the end of the war as one of the last fully battle ready units of the Waffen-SS. This classic study is now available for the first time in a complete English edition. With a preface by famed Waffen-SS commander Paul Hausser, the detailed text is illustrated by more than twenty regimental maps in addition to photographs., over 70 b/w photographs, 30 maps, 6" x 9"

Anyone with an interest in the waffen ss or the das reich division will proberly really enjoy this book.
Written by Four Regimental commanders, this book recounts the formation, the war history, and after war history of this fine regiment. Warning though, this book is not for the causual ww2 reader in my opinion. I think it would be hard going for anyone without an interest in the waffen ss or das reich.
It is a book for somebody with a special interest in these topics, or regimental histories in general.
Having said all that i found it to be a well written, informative account of this regiment. It is forthright, detailed and incredibly interesting and enlightning. What this unit achieved is impressive, considering the situations it kept finding itself in. If you want to know the history of a truly elite regiment in a truly elite division then you will enjoy this. A fair amount of history on the sister regiment too.
Photos too and plenty of maps, and no messing around, its all too the point and not a wasted word.

1 out of 5 stars Not Objective - just short of Nazi propaganda.......2004-04-23

I bought this book with the intention of understanding the "other side of the story" with respect to Tulle (where 98 men were hung) and Oradour Sur Glane (where the entire village was wiped out, including women and children in a church.) I have done a lot of research on these topics, visited both sites, spoken with survivers, and consider myself very well factually informed.
I am frankly outraged at his disgusting and defensive treatment of both topics. The Germans did not lovingly spare lots of men in Tulle after a "careful triage" on a parade ground assisted by local residents, resulting only "foreigners and communists" being hung. In fact, my grandfather was one of them (while his new wife, pregnant with my father looked on). And my grandfather was very much a young resident of Tulle, not associated with the resistance or communists. The author also casually leaves out the 100 men deported to concentration camps the same day, of which a small handful ever returned. As far as Oradour sur Glane, the author claims the church fire was accidental, and (I suppose) the grenade shrapnel that killed so many women and children was a result of munitions stored in the "attic" (an attic in a church??) rather than the eyewitness report that grenades were thrown down the nave by German soldiers. Get real - if the church had just accidentally caught fire, why didn't these charming soldiers just unlock the bloody doors to let the people out?

Frankly, I can understand why someone would be proud of their regiment, but defending the single worst civil atrocity of the war in France? I don't know anyone who could possibly even try. I'm returning my copy - the publishers of this garbage don't deserve anyone's money.

5 out of 5 stars A detailed recollection of the DF Regiment.......1999-06-17

This book provides a detailed recollection of the Der Fuhrer Regiment's actions during and after the war from several of the units senior officers. There is a good mix of small unit and individual battle stories in addition to descriptions of the units that fought with and alongside the DF regiment. There is a detailed description of the events at Tulle and Oradour which (compellingly) disputes much of what is most often printed in other sources. Having spent many years in various US Special Forces units I also greatly appreciated the no-nonsense approach the authors took in writing this book, and highly recommend it to both historians and casual readers.

4 out of 5 stars Memoires of the commanders of "Der Fuhrer"........1999-03-22

"Der Fuhrer" was a regiment in the "Das Reich" Waffen SS division. It was created in 1938, and fought with distinction until 1945. This book is a series of 4 sections, each written by the regiment's commander in the corresponding period, with a preface by Hausser. It is a translation of the 2nd edition of an old book (Hausser passed away in 1972) that was originally in German. Most discussion of tactical situations is at the regimental level, with virtually no discussion of anything above division level, and only moderate coverage of the actions of individual soldiers. Within this genre, it is a fairly good book.

The authors have broken out of the usual post-war memoire habit of sucking up to the western allies, while denouncing the Soviet Union in a play on Cold War sympathies. They denounce a war crime commited by the Dutch, of all people, and acknowledge battles in which the Soviets behaved themselves properly. Of course, there is also the usual denunciation of the shabby treatment that the West German government gave them after the war. However, the book does not get bogged down in whining with self pity.

In the middle of the book, there is a section of black and white photographs, one of which contains an interesting variant on the Hanomag armored personel carrier.

Book Description

"It is my sincere hope that Christopher Bryson's apparently thorough and comprehensive perusal of the scientific literature on the biological actions of fluoride and the ensuing debates through the years will receive the attention it deserves and that its implications will be seriously considered."-Arvid Carlsson, winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize in Medicine

"The Fluoride Deception reads like a whodunit. . . .We are left with compelling evidence that powerful interests with high financial stakes have colluded to prematurely close honest discussion and investigation into fluoride toxicity."-Chemical & Engineering News

"Previous authors have presented the idea of a deception, if not an outright conspiracy, involving fluoride. What makes Bryson's book unique is that it is an up-to-date account supported by indisputable new evidence in the form of declassified correspondence and exhumation of buried studies."-Fluoride

"As with landmark titles, such as Silent Spring, Bryson's book is bound to become a seminal volume."-British Columbia Naturopathic Association

With the narrative punch of Jonathan Harr's A Civil Action and the commitment to environmental truth-telling of Erin Brockovich, The Fluoride Deception leads us on a terrifying journey through the history of the industrial use of fluoride, a chemical substance that has risen steadily in status from a deadly environmental pollutant responsible for injuring thousands to a key component in the development of the atomic bomb to a staple ingredient in toothpaste and drinking water all across the United States.

Christopher Bryson is an award-winning investigative reporter and television producer. After reporting on Guatemalan Army human rights abuses from Central America in the late 1980s for the BBC World Service, National Public Radio, and The Atlanta Constitution, he then won a George Polk Award as part of the Jonathan Kwitny investigative team on public television's The Kwitny Report.

A well written and increadibly referenced source for those who do not wish to succumb to the Bernay-style-propaganda that tells you Fluoride is good for your teeth and does not inhibit neuronal migration and development during fetal and early infancy. "Remember - you kids need fluoride for developing teeth" - Apparently your kids also need fluoride to accumulate in their pineal gland so that there melatonin poroduction centers can be poisoned, the can mature more quickly, and become docile, unintelligent, diabetic, obese "good" Americans, willing to fall in line and become a spoke in the organic wheel of a Hegelian society. Apparently all Americans need the direct neurotoxic effects that Fluoride can afford, and the direct renal toxicity that only increases when your kidneys fail. Apparently Americans need to poison spermatogenesis, out population is growing too fast anyhow. ASK any nephrologist --> Why has the age corrected incidence of renal failure increased dramatically over the past 35 years?; ask any reproductive endocrinologist --> Why have male viable sperm counts and motility decreased approx 50% over the past 35 years?; ask a psychiatrist - over the past 35 years, WHY has the incidence of autism spectrum disorders and ADHD now reached epidemic levels? Ask all these questions and you will hear the response that "We don't know why?" Apparently they have been sheilded of the pesky scientific papers pointing to fluoride.
Ignore the science.
War is Peace.
Freedom is slavery.

5 out of 5 stars The Truth About Fluoride.......2007-09-06

Thank you, Chris Bryson, for this wonderful book. This is one of the most shocking, eye-opening books I have ever read. I was completely in the dark about this subject. How could we all have been fooled all these years? It's all been a complete and total lie. Fluoride rinses in school, fluoride toothpaste, fluoride in the drinking water...This is insanity. I sincerely hope that more and more people find out about this. I am trying to tell others as much as possible.

The book is extremely well documented. The footnotes are intensely detailed. The style and flow of the book makes for interesting reading. I still cannot believe this. This is one of the biggest scandals in history, but almost no one knows about it. When will we all wake up?

5 out of 5 stars Well Documentated book on fluoride in the U.S.......2007-09-04

Bryson does an excellent job researching and providing information about the use of fluoride by the US military. It is extremely disturbing that the US government has known about the damage that fluoride does to the human body and has actively worked with U.S. corporations to cover this information up.

5 out of 5 stars How fast can I say "I've changed my mind"?.......2007-09-01

The Fluoride Deception is an important book for our society and strongly recommend it be read by anyone interested in human health. Like most people I was moderately positive toward the use of fluoride in our water, toothpaste, etc. Recently my small Texas city has been faced with a decision to install water fluoridation equipment. I am a councilman and a retired scientist, although not in a medical field. I began researching the literature, both pro and anti fluoride. I was appalled by the low quality of information from the pro-fluoride side with their tactics of character assassination and deception. A thinking person would ask "If fluoride is so good for you why do they have to resort to such tactics?"
I found this book in the public library but I have now purchased a copy for future reference. I want to express my appreciation to Mr. Christopher Bryson for writing such a clear and compelling book that all can read and enjoy and maybe we can take back America's water someday.

5 out of 5 stars Fluoride Deception.......2007-07-26

I would highly recommend this book for those who want to learn the history and political chicanery behind why we are the recipients of our government's mantra,"Trust me I'm from the government". This book was really a riveting story that combines the best of a great detective novel , a mystery and a historical eye opener into how flouride became a terrible element introduced into our drinking water and other areas of our lives.

Be careful though when sharing this information with others. Be prepared to be branded a conspiracy nut. Many people refuse to see the truth!!!

Much of the best work of six leading pottery manufacturers, Ak-Sar-Ben Pottery, Denwar Ceramics, Iroquois China Company, Laurel Potteries of California, Royal China Company, and Stetson China Company, is shown and described in detail. The dinnerware shapes, including Bantu, Casual, Futura, Holiday, Impromptu, and Scandia, produced by these important manufacturers are well represented to attract collectors today. An engaging scholarly text is filled with new research about the companies and their wares, grading guidelines, informative tables, detailed endnotes, and an extensive bibliography. Current market values are provided in the captions. This dinnerware is an exciting gallery of mid-century design.

4 out of 5 stars "You made your house and all things come to it".......2004-11-18

This book is a collection of 14 short and simple tales from various Native American groups. Each tail ties into the Spider motif that weaves its way to the Native American oral traditions.

The authors and presenters are an aggregate of storytellers and various writers. Even the editor Jill Max is actually a pseudonym of the team if Ronia K. Davidson and Kelly Bennett.

Each tail is simple and geared toward the young reader of grade two and up. It starts out with a few Paragraphs explaining the particular culture the story is being told by and for. These include Kiowa, Tewa, Zuni, Wiyat, Osage, Muskogee, Navaho, Achomawi, Cherokee, Hopi, Cheyene, and Lakatoa.

Not being that familiar with the different cultures I can not vouch for the authenticity of the different color paintings that accompany the stories, however they add a visual plus for the young reader.

          5 out of 5 stars Spider Spins a Story.......2002-05-30

Spider Spins a Story connects Native American tribes together with 14 various tales, all involving a spider. Preceding each legend is a brief history and description of the tribe associated with each story. Muskogee, Cheyenne, Kiowa, Hopi, Cherokee, Navajo, and Osage tribes, as well as others, are mentioned in the book.

Full of colorful, gorgeous illustrations by 6 Native American artists, the book is also endorsed by tribal authorities.
It appeals to both children and adults with its wonderful storytelling of Native American customs and lore. It is also a great reference to the past history and beliefs of Native American life.

The brilliant colors used in the illustrations are particularly appealing and remind the reader of fine Native American art. The Gilcrease Museum, located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was an excellent choice for the detailed research needed to write this spectacular book. Spider Spins a Story is a perfect gift for all ages.

4 out of 5 stars A definite improvement over the last edition..........2000-04-02

This book is a definite improvement over the last edition Dollen put out on Red Wing, but I still find it somewhat incomplete. For example, I would have liked more examples of the various patterns of mixing bowls, as they differ greatly.

That being said, there are improvements that were made which make this a better book than the last. I like the fact that more backstamps (marks) are shown, and I appreciate the more extensive treatment of dinnerware. All in all, a worthwhile book, if a little high priced.

3 out of 5 stars A good start, but could be more complete..........2000-04-02

This book is not an extensive encyclopedia. It provides an introduction and overview to the Red Wing art pottery lines from the 20s - 60s. It covers a number of different patterns and types, but is not as complete as it could be.

I would have preferred to see many more photos of backstamps (marks), as Red Wing used many. It would have been good to have those, along with associated dates, in order to help date various pieces. As well, more photos of everything would have been nice. All in all, this is a start, but not the be-all-and-end-all a serious collector needs.

            Book Description

It's not fair, Emma thinks, for her parents to go away (for five whole days) and leave her with an aunt and uncle she hardly knows. What if they don't like children? But Aunt Evelyn and Uncle Eliot like Emma and her brother, Zachary, just fine. They also like rules. Rules about: Eating. Sleeping. Cleaning up. Messing up. Emma doesn't believe in rules. Not unless they're hers: Eating no broccoli, dead or alive. Sleeping: No sleeping in a room where night rumbles hide. Cleaning up: Don't. Messing up: Do. Emma can see that Aunt Evelyn and Uncle Elliot have a lot to learn about being parents. But that's okay---because Emma has five whole days in which to teach them.

            5 out of 5 stars Great Book!!.......2006-04-13

If you liked any of Patricia MacLachlan's books, this one will satisfy you! It's about Emma, who is eight years old, whose father is an "Eyeball Doctor" and has to go to an "Eyeball Meeting" with Emma's mother, which means Emma and her teenage brother Zach's uncle and aunt have to come baby-sit them for a week. This week teaches Aunt Evelyn and Uncle Elliot about being parents, from divided grapefruits to "night rumbles", and it teaches Emma and Zach about "different spokes for different folks". I read this book when I was 11, but my sisters, ages 7 and 6, listened to it as a read aloud, so I really can recomend it to anyone!! Great book indeed!

            3 out of 5 stars Patricia MacLachlan's Seven Kisses in a Row Makes a Sweet Children's Book.......2006-03-07

Emma, who's 8 years old, has woken up almost every morning of her life to 7 kisses in a row from each of her parents. But her father is an `eye doctor' and had to attend an `eye doctor conference', bringing her mother along. With their parents gone Emma and her brother are being taken care of by their Aunt Evelyn and Uncle Elliot. In this cute, 7 chapter story, Emma and Zachary have 5 days to teach their Aunt and Uncle how to be good parents. I would give this book 3 stars, and recommend it to any 7, 8, or 9 year old.

            4 out of 5 stars A cute book!.......2000-06-23

This is a cute book. When Emma's parents go out of town to an "Eye Ball meeting" their aunt and uncle come to stay with them. While there the kids ( Emma and Zach ) teach their uncle and aunt how to be good parents. The story is cute and the characters are believable. There are lots of words on the pages. The ending is endearing. I think kids between 7-9 might enjoy this book. .
