The Iron Dragon Never Sleeps.......2003-09-30
This is a SUPER book! It was a very basic reading level and I'm kinda a big, advanced reader, so that's why I rated it so low, but it really was good. The characters were believable and it encouraged me to think- as my english teacher says, "to be a good reader" I recommend it to everyone, except people who think they're above good books that just happen to be at a low reading level. To them, I recommed a sour lemon to match their sour attitude!
Great book.......2000-12-06
This book was great. Everyone should read it.
Book Description
The deafening roar of Chinese Air Force SU-27 Flankers shreds the tranquility of the gathering dawn. Within minutes burning phosphorus, shrapnel, and delayed action mines have ripped apart the main naval base at Cam Ranh Bay. Operation Dragonstrike has begun.
By the end of the 20th century, China had grown from one of the most impoverished, technologically-destitute nations of the world, to a regional superpower with global ambitions--ambitions that some in the Chinese government will stop at nothing to achieve.
When a desperate China, weakened by the economic turmoil in Asia, seizes the oil-rich South China Sea, it ignites a furious conflict with Vietnamese and Taiwanese forces. As U.S. and British task forces arrive to impose order, the Chinese strike first, sinking U.S. warships and killing hundreds. Suddenly, Americans finds themselves fighting a desperate battle on, above, and beneath the ocean: F-14's rocket through missile-choked skies, naval officers frantically try to outmaneuver the Chinese Navy, and SEAL teams fight a brutal action against elite Chinese Marine commandos. Diplomacy proves useless as the conflagration in the South China Sea threatens to engulf the entire world.
Four days later, American satellites detect Chinese nuclear missiles being prepared for launch.
From its riveting description of a tense submarine duel beneath the surface to its compelling portraits of men under fire, Dragon Strike offers a gripping portrayal of the fury of modern warfare. A military thriller in the tradition of Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising, Dragon Strike grabs hold and doesn't let up until the final page.

An Excellent Fiction/Non-Fiction Novel.......2006-02-14
As a work of fiction, this novel I think had surpassed its initial intention as book of fiction. Both writers, based on their previous professions as reporters, had suffused politics, war machines (airplanes, warships, etc.), economy, history and geography into this novel. Actually I learned more about stock market, mutual funds and other monetary stuffs from this fiction novel compared to my modest knowledge in money markets.
Should this book is placed into the non-fiction section, I doubt it will make a significant difference. Most of the materials presented in this novel is very convincing, it's hard to differentiate between facts and fiction. The authors had some weaknesses in this writing though. Some pronounced names in Chinese and Japanese are incorrect. But those are small issues.
The plot went around the Red Chinese attacking it Vietnamese neighbor. The story evolves around this issue. Crichton, Grisham, Clancy and Dale Brown's fans take note. Future World War 3 scheme may have similarities with this plot.
For a fiction novel, this book is quite "heavy". Thus, it is not your regular summer reading at the beach. It is much more than that. I would have preferred this novel be written in a lighter fashion.
Anyway, a four-star read for this fiction (or should I say, non-fiction?) book...
Dry read with a lot of technical mistakes...........2005-09-22
Just got through reading Dragon Strike, and have to say it left me unimpressed. While Hawksley's grasp on the financial/market aspects of the conflict is good, his knowledge of military tactics and hardware leaves much to be desired.
Constant, nagging technical errors plague the book, such as references like "SU-24 Flankers" and several others. The lack of understanding on naval and air warfare shows through, and their is also an unusual bias towards the Royal Navy capabilities that shows through, and a British bias in general.
This bias is exemplified not only by exaggerating British military capabilities in the fight for the South China Sea, but also by his treatment of panic caused by a possible nuclear attack. While the UK remains calm but prepared, the US falls apart with panic while gangs armed with AK-47 rule the streets and crowds surrounding the white house fire RPG's on government buildings ;-)
It's that kind of over the top style that distracts from the book overall. However the prose is not much better. His style is one of 1-4 page snippets that attempt to link the story as a cohesive whole, jumping around from China, Vietnam, Japan, the White House, etc. But the writing style is dry, with the characters nothing more than paper cut-outs, that you come away unimpressed, and unsympathetic to any of them.
As a techno-thriller, this falls short. As a primer on economics and the markets in time of war, Hawksley does show a grasp on the subject at hand.
Certainly no Larry Bond, Tom Clancy, Harold Coyle or Scott Malensek, but the book does make for an interesting "what-if" chronology, even if the delivery falls short. If you can find it cheap, and really enjoy the genre, pick it up and give it a look. Otherwise you should pass on this one and try one of the above authors.
Unlikely Scenario Post 9-11, Still A Thought-Provoking Novel.......2001-10-15
A remarkably believable account, Humphrey Hawksley's Dragonfire, illustrates a major nuclear war in Asia emerging and proceeding in a series of logical steps, none of which seems as horrendous as the final outcome.
Assume Tibetans based in India launch a raid into Lhasa to free a Tibetan monk being held prisoner by the Chinese. Assume the Chinese encourage their Pakistani friends to stir up trouble on India's western border. Assume the Pakistani military produces a risk-taking leader who replaces the weak government, undertaking a high-risk campaign against India with strong backing from China. Assume that at the peak of the Pakistani campaign, the Chinese launch an attack on India. These circumstances set the stage for what follows. As India's larger military weight wears out the Pakistanis and India pushes into Pakistan, the Pakistanis desperately decide to use nuclear weapons tactically on their own territory. From then on, the situation spirals out of control.
The recent terrorist attacks on America make this novel slightly less likely because we are almost certainly going to see a stronger American military and a closer American relationship with Pakistan, which will have a stabilizing influence.
Nonetheless, as a harbinger of the dangers the world will face in the next generation and the potential for utilization of weapons of mass destruction, this is an especially believable and incredibly thought-provoking novel well worth reading.
Red Dragon.......2001-08-15
Hawksley has such a talent for understatement. The 'China Syndrome' time is back again. Where is the new one? "RED SPIRIT"? With a global take on both business and politics as usual, we deserve the thoughtful insights of an author who looks to the spirit behind material dialectic and capitalism whether East or West. Where is Hawksley hiding? we need to hear his voice.
Miscalulation in a nuclear world.......2001-06-27
Portrays the harm that can come about when politics and distrust rules in a world armed to the teeth with nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction

Marvellous! One of the best books ever written on the Korean War.......2006-04-12
To anyone who wonders what a new book about the Korean War has to offer, Mr Patrick Roe?s magnificent work gives a most convincing answer. The writer is a military man and he analyzes the reasons and the strategy of the Chinese intervention in Korea in a masterful way, using a wealth of Chinese, Soviet, Korean and American sources. Every bit of detail is here, to satisfy even the most demanding reader: what was the status of the PLA in the eve of the Korean War, what was the military philosophy of Mao and his entourage, how the Soviets repeatedly let down the Chinese offering help and then changing their mind, how the PLA overcame great doubts (and fear) to go for the first time outside their own borders to fight against the most well-equipped force of the era, how the Chinese regarded the nuclear threat of the USA, which forces they employed, how and why, the reasons for choosing General Peng Te Huai to command the Chinese People?s Volunteers, a blow by blow analysis of the battles between the PLA and the UN forces in Korea during the first critical months and, of course, the many mistakes of the US intelligence services who underestimated the Chinese factor for a long time. Highly recommended!
An excellent coverage of a difficult time.......2001-02-24
I consider this the best book I have read on the first six months of the Korean War. It accurately covers the conflict both before and after the entry of the Chinese. More importantly it gives excellent background on the Chinese, Korean, Soviet relations. It fairly identifies the deficiencies of the high command (Washington and Tokyo) and the problems faced by a badly depleted military force. It coordinates the actions of the Eighth Army and X Corps and identifies the lack there of. With only minor errors it accurately portrays the debacles of late November and early December, a feat rarely done. I know, I was at Koto-ri.

The Dragon and the Horses Mouth.......2000-06-13
Review of Roe, The Dragon Strikes This is an important book for the serious student of military and political history and for the veterans of the "Forgotten War" - and of other conflicts large and small, before and since. It is a sober, serious carefully organized and closely written work. That should not be read as dull or difficult. It is simply and elegantly composed in terms immediately accessible to any interested reader. I would suggest thatthe reader first scan the final chapter (16), "Looking Back", for a contextual summary of the author1s findings. After that, the Preface tells you who the author is and what motivates him. Itis brief, simple and overly modest. From this point on the chapters develop an account rangingfrom the historical relationships of Asians and Europeans over the last 150 years, to the political aftermath of WW2, the overheated ideological confrontations of "super powers", and the willful - if not entirely intentional, misunderstandings that led up to and resulted in the tragic mishandling of the (multiplex) strategies and tactics of the Korean War. Although it is told in simple language, this is not a simple tale. Roe does not seek or dispense blame. The book is a painstaking and rigorously objective attempt to make sense of the cascade of misconceptions, missteps and faulty decisions that were the pivotal crises of the Korean "Police Action" and the tragedy of that still unresolved war. If the reader discerns incompetence, rampant egotism, chauvinist arrogance or just plain stupidity, these are revealed by the actors themselves, in the context of their actions, and not by the conjecture or "interpretation" of the author. My personal bias should be made clear. Like Pat Roe I am a member of the Chosin Few. As he was a young 2nd Lt. in the 7th Marine Regiment, I was a young Sgt. in the 5th Marines.I came to know him personally a dozen years or so ago. I respect and admire his clear-headed intelligence, his uncompromising - if polite -honesty, his unquestionable personal integrity and his ability to look calmly and objectively at the facts and to organize and present them lucidly, without adjective or adverbial coloring. Roe is known throughout the membership of the Chosin Few for his remark at the first reunion of that fraternity in 1985. On the heels of much in the way of rhetoric and reminiscence and the emotional impact of encountering old comrades and mourning those lost, Roe summarized his viewpoint and his feelings. He wrote simply, "We did a good thing". Pat has done a good and valuable thing in this book. In the Preface he writes that the book is a product of six years of research and writing. This is his only misstatement in 450 pages. The book is the product of fifty years of attention and devotion to duty.

Dragon Strike Game! Cool!.......2000-09-02
The Dragon Strike Board game is one of the best games I have every played. It comes with a video to watch before you play (mostly for beginners) to get you in the mood for Dragon Strike. The video is pretty lame, though, but the game is awesome! It's like Dungeons and Dragons, only it's on a board and the adventures are much shorter. Good adventures take about an hour - an hour and 45 minutes. In this game, there are adventurers (1-5 players) and a Dragon Master. The Dragon Master does not have as much control over the game compared to Dungeons and Dragons. I suggest you try this game out if you like this kind of stuff.

The best future conflict book yet.......2004-09-30
This book is without doubt the best work done on a possible future conflict. Makes books like the "The Third World War" and "Red Storm Rising" appear amateurish in comparison. Attention given to details of both political and military actions is amazing. Best of all is the fact that the book is free from moralising sermons or two dimensional characters.
The best of its kind.......1999-03-21
One of the best books I have ever read on the subject. Gives critical analysis, written in a semi-fictional form, based on real world reports.
If you can't understand why so many view China with unease, you have to read this book.
A thought provoking, disturbing but accurate potrayal of WW3.......1999-03-19
In the light of recent events in the region, this book presents a disturbing acount of how this very real conflict may escalate. Refreshingly, attention is given to the political, economic, social and technological consequences of such a conflict. An addictive read.
Very good.......1999-03-11
A very good "what if" story about war in Asia. The authors definitely did their homework on this one...

Customer Reviews:
Great Introductory Text.......2007-10-05
If you are interested in the broad spectrum of public administration, this is a great book to start with. It covers what public administration is, politics and public policy, government management and reinvention, intergovernmental relations, ethics, org theory and OB, leadership, finance and HR, and program evaluation, among others. It also has case studies and review questions for each chapter and other helful resources. Yet, probably the best thing is that it is written in a very readable way. This text would be good for Bachelors or Masters students, especially with its key concepts, bibliography, recommended books and related websites. I enjoyed it in a Masters class, and can recommend it.
All inclusive.......2007-03-24
This book has it all. Great stories, great information, and a great layout. Good for grad school and undergrads the same.

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy f/ Anxiety Disorders: A Practitioner's Treatment Guide to Using Mindfulness, Acceptance.....
ASIN: 1583918523 |
Book Description
The costs of occupational stress in absences, ill-health related retirement, litigation and lost productivity are increasing, putting strain on economies across the world. The fact that health care work is inherently more stressful than many other occupations makes it vital that the problem of occupational stress among health professionals is addressed.
CBT for Occupational Stress in Health Professionals goes beyond simply defining the problem and fills a gap in the current literature by providing clear and concise individual treatment interventions. In three parts, the book covers:
· an overview of stress in the occupational context
· the standard CBT approach to assessment, formulation and treatment
· a new schema focused approach to treating occupational stress
The schema focused approach presented here provides powerful tools for treating a range of work related problems, for which standard CBT approaches are ineffective. Case studies are presented throughout the book to illustrate the therapeutic approaches described.
This book will be of huge benefit to clinical and organizational psychologists, psychiatrists, mental health workers, counselors and anyone else involved in treating occupational stress. It will also have much to offer those who manage people suffering from stress, human resource workers and those who are experiencing work related stress.
