A great introduction and guide for new parents-to-be........2000-08-03

Excellent, Easy to Read, Well Illustrated Guide.......2000-07-24
My husband and I both found this to be a very well written book that covers all stages of pregnancy, labor and birth. Though it is not exhaustive in all the different views and opinions surrounding pregnancy and delivery, it does do a very good job giving a well illustrated guide to the basic, normal process. Seems to favor neither natural nor assisted (i.e. epidural/medicated) delivery. Just gives facts. ALSO, it is VERY graphically illustrated (weak stomachs beware!)

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful!.......2007-06-16
Very informative and beautifully illustrated, this is the best book on breastfeeding that I have seen. It is full of useful information on positioning and other basics. Shares the personal experiences of breastfeeding mothers, and has a great section for trouble shooting. Clearly explains the importance of both foremilk and hindmilk, and how to ensure your baby receives both.
AMAZING!!!!!!.......2007-03-06
This is by far the very BEST breastfeeding book I have ever read. It has TONS of actual pics of mommas breastfeeding their children and that is so helpful. Most breastfeeding books generally only have drawings of breastfeeding moms and babies, and while that is ok it is not always helpful. This book is so amazing. I was unsuccessful in nursing my first daughter, and I really think it was from lack of support and knowledge in what I was doing. This book is so informative, so helpful and full of encouragement. Its like your own personal support system in a book. I know I will be 100% successful breastfeeding my next little one. : )
A Must Have.......2006-11-11
I extremely enjoyed the book and would definitely recommend it to anyone planning on breastfeeding!
If you're going to breastfeed, and especially if you aren't planning on taking a short course in it at the hospital, I'd say this is a fine substitute. It basically covers nearly everything you need to know, from the physical aspect of how breastfeeding works, to how you properly do it, to common mistakes.
I, myself took the class my hosptial offered so a lot of this book was repetition for me. And, while the first few days I had a very hard time, after that it was smooth sailing. However, I did have some questions about things my baby was doing once in a while and was concerned, I thought maybe the book could help. Had I had this book at home already from day 1, I think I could have gotten more use out of it, since I was having latch-on issues (then). The book covered this in great detail, I don't think you could ask for a better book from that aspect- latch-on, how to know if baby has had enough, how to position yourself/baby etc. Anyway, the concerns I was having, and I'm sure a lot of moms have different issues once things are going well but then something pops up- the book didn't help me with. One main thing I think I would have liked more help with would be how what you're eating affects baby, and when your baby has bad gas problems. I know a lot of moms have problems with this, as well as fussy times, and we often wonder if it's something in our milk and what we can do about it...So while I feel the book is missing a few things and/or should have gone into greater detail about certain things; I'm still convinced this is one of the best books out there.
Overall, if you are going to breastfeed, get this book! It's awesome to have on hand, it also covers things like common myths and has some case studies of women who had different difficulties. The price for this book is so reasonable and I think what it gives you is priceless!
WAS having problems..........2006-05-31
I spoke with a lactation consultant at the hospital before I was released with my first daughter, and thought I had breastfeeding down pat. Boy was I wrong! I was really sore in no time and had a lot of frustration. I was hesitant to go to the consultant again for fear of being judged by such a "pro". I bought this book, took it's advice of having my husband compare what I was doing to the book and poof! my problem was recognized and solved! I would recommed this book to anyone who is having problems breastfeeding but really wants to continue to try it.
This book is the reason for my successful breastfeeding!.......2006-04-11
I failed to get my son to successfully latch and breastfeed 3 years ago because I really had no idea how to hold him and how to help him latch correctly. This book taught me how to do both and now I am successfully breastfeeding my daughter!!! This book has many excellent photos and tips for breastfeeding. My only complaint is that it doesn't address moms going back to work and/or pumping.
Book Description
Clear information, beautifully presented
"Margaret Martin's book fills in the gaps in so many people's knowledge. Her book describes in simple language and with wonderfully clear illustrations what is happening in our bodies when we are expecting a baby. The author tells what to look for in the various stages and phases of labor and delivery, and then continues to discuss the first week after birth." Elisabeth Bing, FACCE, Founder ASPO/Lamaze
"This book can be read and enjoyed, and most importantly understood, by women of all ages and backgrounds. Fathers-to-be, physicians, midwives, and other health professionals will also benefit from the beautiful way in which this subject matter is presented." Patricia J. Dolhun, M.D., Diplomate of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology
Knowing the basics about pregnancy and childbirth helps women avoid the common complaints of pregnancy. Regular prenatal care can help prevent or reduce risks to mother and baby.
In easy-to-understand language, Pregnancy and Childbirth tells you everything you need to know to enjoy a safer, more comfortable pregnancy and welcome a stronger, healthier baby. Simple, clear, two-color drawings explain every aspect.
This inviting book is for the whole family! Fathers and children will learn from and like the straightforward, friendly format of Pregnancy and Childbirth as much as the woman who is expecting a baby. Health professionals will find it invaluable as a teaching aid.

BEST SERIES AROUND!.......2007-01-12
This whole series is the best I know of. I started purchasing them in the 70s for my children...who are now soon to be parents. Buy them, put them on the coffee table and leave them there for years! From generation to generation, the charming truth of our bodies, minds and spirits.
Very bad information--should get relegated to the trash pile.......2006-05-16
I actually had checked this book out of our local library when we found out my wife was pregnant. The advice is so dated and bad (mind you, it was first published in the 1970s) that it can only be treated as bad humor as opposed to information. It advises you to take your wife out for one last alcoholic fling when you find out she's pregnant, offers advice that is no longer relevant for the birth, and really bad cooking advice. It does not reflect any current knowledge and could give a guy a very wrong idea about what to expect. May it go out of print!
Dated and not all that useful.......2001-07-31
At one point in the narrative the author recommends that you read some of your wife's pregnancy books to get an idea what's going on. That is the best advice this book has to offer. Read another book.
I found most of what was advised here to be dated and not all that useful given the changing roles in modern America. Most men do not need to read hints on how to make canned soup and the recipe for "Tuna Chowder" made my wife's stomach churn when I read it out loud. The entire chapter on what to do while in the waiting room seems superfluous in contemporary society where the husband accompanies his wife during the delivery.
There are some good words of wisdom peppered through the 1950s mentality though. Let your wife know you love her and that she's attractive. Get involved with the process right from the start and... and.....
Sorry. That's about all I could glean from this thing. I just saved you ten bucks.
if all you need is a laugh or two.........................2001-04-29
The author has tried to cover too much ground, with the usual result that much of it is skimmed. You may be able to glean a few good points, but don't put all your hopes in this being your sole source of information, it just can't do it. Not only is it generally flighty but also occasionally ill-informed; "giving a pregnant woman champagne". If it had been a clear-cut comedy book I could respect that, but the chuckles are weak and a few are not even funny being disrespectful to women. I have been a bit harsh perhaps in reviewing this book, if this is not the only book/class/etc the expectant father learns from it is ok as a mild humor book. Hopefully it will prompt the purchase of a more accurate and informative book.
For the Busy Dad-to-Be.......2000-12-13
I bought this book for my husband shortly after we learned I was pregnant. I read it first and thought it was perfectly short and direct for the first-time and somewhat-frightened busy father-to-be. My husband didn't read it until after our baby boy was born. At which point, enraptured by our son,he read it from front to cover and tried out all the recipes included during my first couple of weeks home. The recipes are simple, but really, really delicious. He still refers to it for certain dishes. My bet is that he will read it again, but at the beginning of my next pregnancy -- not the end of it!

Book Description
The national bestseller that shows how the American Dream is languishing, surpassed worldwide by a powerful alternative in the lifestyle of the new Europe.
Customer Reviews:
Fodder for consideration and debate.......2007-06-08
I'm about halfway through and have just come to the first chapter that, I confess, is leaving me scratching my head - network commerce.
Aside from that, I've found the book so far to be full of ideas to ponder and discuss with others who might be interested. Or... at least it provides more elements through which to filter/view the day-to-day news of the world.
Rifkin brings quotes and thoughts from a multitude of other writers, historical and contemporary, into a thought-provoking stew.
This is not an academic book with a bunch of substantiated and indisputable facts; rather, it offers interesting suggestions and makes conclusions based on aforementioned breadth of thought.
Easy to recommend.
In depth and well written..........2007-05-29
I think this book is for the person who wants an in depth analysis and history of the EU. The book takes into account almost every facet of EU life including markets, science advancement, social metworks, currency/finance, birth rates, etc and offers a reader a thorough history of why the EU countries think and behave as they do. Mr Rifkin takes us back to the 12th and 13th centuries for some of the analysis, which is great, but for the casual reader, can be too much. I found Mr. Rifkin's analysis and writing very well in hand and very informative. I learned much about the EU from reading this book. I would recommend this book for the people that have a strong interest in Europe and want to further understand its people. Good book.
Over simplified.......2007-05-11
As an American who has spent 5 years living in Belgium, I found Mr. Rifkin's book to be oversimplified and full of stereotypical errors. The first big one was assuming Europe, as a whole, is one monogamous culture. Each country has their own set of beliefs and ideologies, and while these states reconcile their differences vis-a-vis European policy, it is totally inaccurate to refer to a 'European dream' as a pan-continent phenomenon. A simple example would be to compare any two states. Belgians are very different from the Greeks, the Spaniards different from the British, the Germans different from the French.
This isn't just a language issue either. In Belgium, where the people living in the south speak french and the people in the north speak dutch, a distinct difference is made in their culture compared to their 'linguistic parents.' Simply put, call a Walloon french or a Fleming dutch, and you will have greatly insulted them. To bring this back home, it's like referring to Americans as North Americans. The US isn't the same as Canada, and it certainly isn't the same as Mexico. Does an American like being called a Canadian? I think not. This is just the same as grouping A Romanian in with a Swede; While they come from the same continent, they have different beliefs and cultural values that very few people are willing to give up. However, these states get along and have healthy, normal relations that insure peace and prosperity for its citizens.
As for calling the American dream obsolete in favor of a 'European' one, I would have to completely disagree. This is a matter of interpretation. One poster said that the American middle class is bound to economic enslavement. I beg to differ. The whole point of the American dream is to have the freedom to move away from it. Sure, you can work to get into the US middle class and live a comfortable life, or you can go out on your own and make your dreams come true. Many western European nations have a much larger middle class, where wealth and equality are much more evenly distributed. However, for those who want to break out, they are much more restricted in how they can. And this isn't to say that there is a right one or a wrong one, it's just a matter of opinion.
In the end, America isn't dying. Sure, the American dream is unique to America, but that's our culture, and, as we have painfully learned throughout history (Vietnam, Iraq II), it's extraordinarily hard to kill an idea. This book, in my opinion, is detrimental to American opinion on the 'outside world.' My recommendation to any American who wants a real take on the way the world is shaping, is to go live abroad for a while. The world isn't going to bite, and no one will single you out for being an American, unless you do something stupid, in which case you're singled out for being stupid. The world doesn't hate us, it's just the foreign policy they don't like.
The European Dream.......2007-05-07
A very thought provoking book all Americans should read. This may give readers a different world view.
A Mirror for our Values.......2007-04-18
When I read this book, I realized that in spite of my self-image as a very individualistic person, my values themselves are very predictable and derivative. In spite of the fact that I am in the secular minority in America, I can absolutely see how everything I -- and we -- value are a result of cultural evoluation. Duh. Oh well, just when you thought you were unique.
In addition to helping you understand why you value what you value, this book will also help you see the downside of the cultural evolution and values of America. It puts into words something you probably suspect, but haven't been able to put a finger on: that the leadership in an increasingly interdependent world will not arise from within this culture.
