Fans of Guy Finley know he's a repository of "great wisdom" from philosophers, poets, and religious figures from throughout history. He thinks thinkers as diverse as Rumi, Emerson, Thoreau, Saint Augustine, and Krishnamurti all have ideas worth considering as one meanders along the path to happiness. Finley says that contentment comes when one learns how to "bridge the distance between who we are at present and what we may become." While this is certainly material he's covered in his many other titles, here he focuses on the importance of living in "the Now" (which he deems worthy of constant capitalization).
Finley's concept of the "Now" seems to borrow more than a bit from Buddhism's idea of mindfulness, as well as cognitive therapy. He claims those seeking to find internal peace must "[dare] to leave who we have been behind," consciously forgetting about unpleasant events and emotions in the past, lest they influence one's feelings--and undermine one's self-confidence and potential for happiness--in the present moment.
Finley's writing is rather rambling at times, and he relies heavily on italicizing to express his points as he covers topics ranging from heartbreak, the "False Self," self-fulfillment, and "the Light of the world." Each chapter includes an "Ask the Masters" section of hypothetical spiritual questions (example: "Why do we have so little true understanding of ourselves?"), which he answers with quotes from the likes of Plutarch and Thomas Carlyle. He also adds a "Key Lessons" summary at the end of each chapter, offering a Cliffs Notes-style translation of his often lengthy arguments. For all his lack of clarity, Finley does do a capable job of expressing one timeless truth, as he calls it: that one's inner nature determines one's experience of the outside world."--Erica Jorgensen
Book Description
That chronic, nagging sense of discontent, that sneaky feeling that something is missing from life, that secret yearning for "something more" can all be healed. In Let Go and Live in the Now, best-selling author Guy Finley brings the great Wisdom Teachings of centuries past into our lives in an intimate, accessible way.
Each chapter of Let Go and Live in the Now tackles a hurt that keeps us from experiencing inner peace and happiness. Every chapter includes a brief essay and a contemporary teaching story followed by exercises to help readers incorporate the teaching into everyday life. Each chapter ends with "Ask the Masters," a question-and-answer format with such historical and modern-day spiritual masters as Buddha, St. Augustine, G.I. Gurdjieff, Henry David Thoreau, Peter Matthiessen, and Jeanne Guyon.
"It only seems as though there's something more important for you to do than just quietly be yourself," writes Guy Finley. Imagined heavens never last, but eternal principles empower readers to live in "the now." From the first story of Katie, her broken heart, and the doctor who shows her how to heal it to the very last lesson of Paul who relocates himself from the city to the country and still can't see "the forest for the trees," readers see themselves in these eloquent retellings of ancient spiritual principles.

Not Worth the Time to Read .......2007-07-20
Try Happiness Now; it's a much better book. Once I read Happiness Now, skimmed this one and realized it was not as well written as the others.
Truly Inspirational.......2006-07-18
I highly recommend this book Let Go and Live in the Now. All individuals walking the spiritual path and who truly seek to understand the Universal Principals that govern our daily life should read this book. This book is like nourishment for the hungry soul. As with all of Guy Finley's books I find it to be a true treasure. I have enjoyed reading this book and have read it several times, gaining a deeper understanding of truth each time. The style of Mr. Finley's writings in the form of parables allows the reader to discover for themselves these
spiritual truths.
Good try.......2006-06-26
I read this book two years ago and again this week. It actually made no difference at all to me and I read it with a open mind . It is as other reviewers have mentioned incredibly repetitive of the one idea and this was the hardest part. I kept waiting to get to the part where he gives the solution but it never came. It is however a book that is easy to read and advances Tolles book on the same idea the Power of now .
Great Wisdom.......2006-05-21
Guy Finley is one of those treasures that everyone should get to know. I gave this book 5 stars, because I think it conveys very important concepts to live a happy, fulfilling life. Guy's writing style is a bit "quirky" and repetitive, and some find it a bit off-putting. I enjoy reading him, though, because I have heard his talks both on tape and in person, and can hear his voice when I read his books. So, I have an advantage.
If you really want to get into some great material, get his tapes or CDs. Warning: they are highly addictive!! His talks are wonderful, and full of incredible metaphors, stories, and passion about what we are about, and how we can attain so much more through mastery of our selves.
Guy Finley can best be described as a self-taught master of a wisdom tradition that incorporates the work of Vernon Howard, Gurdjieff, Ouspensky, and Krishnamurti, into a contemporary blend of thought that is not New Age at all, but transcends the superficial and aims much higher. He is iconoclastic and insightful, challenging and subtle.
Anyone who has the opportunity to gainn access to his work, whether in book form or tapes of his powerful talks, should do so.
A complete handbook of the art of self-knowledge and skillful living........2005-11-19
Let Go and Live in the Now is a complete handbook of the art of self-knowledge and skillful living, practical and down-to-earth and yet lofty and spirit-filled. In this book, author Guy Finley uses original "truth tales" to convey deep spiritual teachings that concern the whole of Creation as much as the individual. These stories are thoroughly explained and elaborated upon within the chapters, most of which include practical "lists" of exercises and ideas one can work with right away. Here are some examples: "Five Ways to Raise Your Level of Spiritual Freedom" (p.60), "Seven Insights Into True Silence" (p.86), and "Seven Simple Exercises to Invite the Extraordinary Life" (p.181). For an example of the depth and the clarity of Mr Finley's thinking, I would strongly recommend that you carefully study the information contained in pages 49 to 59. There you'll find what you've been wanting to know all along.
Particularly useful is the closing section of each chapter, which includes a Q&A section entitled "Ask the Masters", in which Finley quotes famous spiritual authors and philosophers (Thoreau, Eckhart, Krishnamurti...) to answer questions likely to be in the mind of every reader, and a final summary of the chapter under the title "Key Lessons in Review". These Key Lessons make excellent working tools for those who like to meditate on higher ideas.
If you are familiar with Mr Finley's work you will recognize in Let Go and Live in the Now a different approach from his previous books; each one seems to appeal to a specific part in the reader (the mind, the heart, the emotions...), but all revolve around the same central idea: liberation from the prison of the self through true self-knowledge leads to the happy life --already awaiting you-- that your heart longs for.

A delightful and enlightening book!.......2000-03-30
Dr. Robinson has done a wonderful job of combining personal experiences with basic truths that, at one point in most of our lives, we have all either learned or suspected may be true. Great reading as a morning "thought of the day" or wisdom to fall asleep to. Certainly, we all would be happier if we could remember these lessons as we go through our hectic lives.

Passionate, Practical Never Preachy.......2004-02-07
Jill Brooke writes where others fear to tread. Her simple logic and easy-to read style gave me a feeling of peace while reading about this painful subject. Brooke writes of death as a muse and motivator and builds her theme slowly and in such a spirit of sharing that I felt I was being guided by a friend. One of the most important lessons learned, was how thinking, talking and remembering your loved ones with others keeps them alive through memories. The book is full of practical information and advice from grief professionals entwined around interviews from well-known personalities such as President Clinton who've experienced loss. A great gift, not just for the bereaved, but for new mothers looking for ideas on how to keep the memory of their parents alive with the next generation who never knew them. After reading this book, I felt I had the tools to help continue my loved ones legacy. This well researched book presents a very real way of thinking about death that removes some of the stigma and fear and leaves in its place compassion and hope for the future. Highly recommended.
Healthy, Necessary Book When Dealing with Loss.......2003-11-29
When I lost my father at the age of 25 and was left to handle *everything* (funeral, flowers, arrangements, property, and so forth) amid grad school and two jobs, I received too many pieces of advice and useless, but well-intentioned, texts. This book does wonders for the spirit, as it's a refreshing, true-to-life book to honestly get us through the loss of loved ones. No matter what anyone says, he/she doesn't know what you're going through; this book assists one with the unique experience of loss. I've given this book five times over as gifts to my siblings and friends who really needed these words and healthy, sensible suggestions. Kudos to the author! I still pick it up years later when I cycle back to struggling with my father's death.
One of the very best books on the subject.......2002-12-15
I began reading books and articles on death and grief more than 40 years ago, and after a while, I found they all said the same thing, more or less. Then I read Don't Let Death Ruin Your Life. I was delighted to find a book that reflected what my experience working with grieving people has shown -- that while painful, our relationship with loved ones continues and grief provides the opportunity to learn about life and living with greater purpose. Jill Brooke provides a new framework for the stages/phases of grief and offers everyone hope. I recommend it highly, both to those who are grieving and to those who are working with grieving individuals. And as I think about it, I recommend it to anyone who is interested in living a better life.
Very Helpful Book.......2002-10-30
This work contains a lot of great information for a difficult time. Much thought and research was done to produce a sensitive and practical approach to a difficult subject. I read and referenced this work in my own book, The Wisdom of Death: Six Paths to Understanding Loss and Grief (available here at Amazon)and found it helpful in taking that journey into sorrow.
The book I wish I'd written.......2002-03-07
...It was with great interest and relief that I read the book, Don't Let Death Ruin Your Life, by Jill Brooke. It's filled with insights, wisdom, and compassion. What I like most of all about it is the fact that it gives us permission to miss our loved ones--in a healthy way--for the rest of our lives if we want to. Brooke assures us that it's okay to 'keep our loved ones close by and honor their memory while integrating them into our lives that have now been changed by their physical absence.'
"Some of the ways that she shares how to do this is to notice how our loved ones live on in our beliefs and our feelings, and to tell stories about the positive ways they affected our lives. In doing so, we continue to have a meaningful, significant relationship with them while, at the same time, moving through our grief to a brighter place and reclaiming our happiness.
"This is an amazing book, and one that I'll be buying for others and sharing with people for a long time to come...

Packed full of useful and easy self-discovery tools.......1999-04-25
Joy Freeman's "Express Yourself" is a useful example of an author who has worked hard at successfully obtaining life's "psycho-spiritual" wisdom. She then puts these insights into a book form that is easily assimulated. Her many "Try it!" excercises provided me with heartfelt and "grounded" tools that helped me transform my life into a more soul-empowered one.
I have read many "self-help" books over the years, but this book seemed a conglomeration of all other books, plus it offered me new and more powerful ways to free my soul.
My life has changed drastically to the better since reading this book.

Book Description
The story begins in March 1865 as Union troops closed in on Richmond. Jefferson Davis tries to establish new capitals in Danville, Greensboro, and Charlotte and is ultimately captured in Georgia. Secretary of War Breckinridge dons the style of a pirate to escape. Secretary of State Benjamin disguises himself as a poor farmer-with his gold sewn inside his clothes. Nearly 60 primary and secondary sources were used to research this dramatic history. The book contains sketches made by an artist who accompanied Davis on much of the escape, and includes maps of the escape route.
Book Description
A first-hand personal account of American businessman and Slim Fast founder Danny Abraham's more than 15 years of peacemaking efforts in the Middle East and the reasons he believes peace is possible.
For more than fifteen years, entrepreneur Danny Abraham, founder and former chairman of Slim Fast, chose to utilize his considerable resources to facilitate Mideast peace. Together with Utah Congressman Wayne Owens, Abraham made more than sixty trips to the Middle East between 1988 to 2002, meeting with Arab leaders Hosni Mubarak, Hafez Assad, Crown Prince Abdullah, and Yasser Arafat, and Israeli prime ministers Yitzhak Shamir, Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres, Ehud Barak, and Ariel Sharon.
Using his business experience with difficult negotiations, Abraham took an active behind-the-scenes role, setting up critical one-on-one meetings between key figures. He urged these leaders to articulate not what they wanted, but what they needed, to make peace, fostering significant advances in the peace process. Since Owens' untimely death in 2002, Abraham has continued to arrange peacemaking meetings on his own.
Drawing from meeting transcripts, diary entries, and extensive handwritten notes, Abraham writes in the first person about these extraordinary, often private meetings, giving us rare "you are there" insight into historically significant events. In his pragmatic and hopeful book, he writes, "I am a great optimist, particularly about a region of the world that usually brings out people's most pessimistic inclinationsIsrael and its neighbors." Foreword by President Bill Clinton. 16 page color photo insert, maps, chronology, index.

A unique documentation of a personal contribution to the peace process.......2006-05-23
Plenty of books have been written about Israel's stormy relationships with its neighbors - but few hold the content and impact of PEACE IS POSSIBLE: CONVERSATIONS WITH ARAB AND ISRAELI LEADERS FROM 1988 TO PRESENT. Entrepreneur author Dan Abraham founded Slim-Fast Foods and utilized his resources from this to facilitate Mideast peace, making over sixty trips between 1988 and 2002 and meeting with major Arab leaders as well as Israeli prime ministers. His business background helped difficult negotiations, and his active role helped leaders understand the process of peace. Meeting transcripts, diary entries and his own notes make for a unique documentation of a personal contribution to the peace process.

An interesting book.......2006-02-23
Oh sure, this book has some material that is worth reading. Danny Abraham talked to all sorts of people in the Middle East about peace. And I'm giving his book three stars on that basis alone. On the other hand, meeting people is not really the same thing as accomplishing something positive. If the people my own parents had met with had decided not to start wars, the Second World War would not have occurred.
Is peace possible? Of course it is. The potential benefits of peace are enormous (not only to both sides but to society as a whole), and sooner or later, it is likely that people will take advantage of them. However, I think we need to avoid counterfeit offers of peace. I get plenty of Internet messages saying that I've won the Lottery, but I ignore them. And similarly, I would not want to take a peace offer seriously if it were made by a bunch of insincere, dishonest, and racist thugs who regarded their opponents as trash.
I think Dan Abraham should have made it clearer that there is a difference between a Moderate position in human relations (namely one in which one lives at lets live) and an Extremist position (one in which one feels a need to engage in genocide, or at least ethnic cleansing). Extremist positions tend to lead to war, and that's what we're seeing from many on the Arab side. And while Abraham does discuss some Arab misperceptions about reality, I feel he does not do justice to the severity of the problem of the barrage of anti-Zionist lies we see from the international community, academia, and the media.
The author does mention that one makes peace with one's enemies, not with one's friends. But that is misleading. Peace needs some sincerity, some truth, and some ability and desire to keep commitments to avoid fighting. I think Abraham overestimates how close peace is, and I think he overestimates the importance of Israel. At one point, he asks how good the 1966 borders would be for Israel. I think that in peacetime, they might be okay, but that isn't the point. The point is that there is no peace, and under these circumstances, the 1966 borders would be very bad for human society as a whole. Such borders would mean rewarding the crime of Arabs stealing land from land-poor Israel. And I think that crime is indeed bad for society, bad in the long run for the criminals, and not good for the victims. Even Israel's flight from Gaza (a region which is heavily Arab and in peacetime probably ought to be under Arab sovereignty) is, in my opinion, a bad precedent because it rewards crime.
There is an "Arab" perspective about the fight with Israel in which the Arabs are the victims. But I think we need to be reasonable here. We humans move folks around quite often to build new dams, bridges, freeways, sports stadiums, and so on. And plenty of politics are involved in deciding where to put such public structures. But it is ludicrous to claim that the Purpose of a new Sports Stadium is to inconvenience a few landowners! Similarly, those who accuse Israel of existing merely to inconvenience a few Arabs are liars. Such folks are useless as potential peacemakers. And those who add that Jews never had a connection to Jerusalem are simply making absurd taunts; they also ought to be disqualified as "peacemakers."
The author makes an interesting point, namely that many Arabs see it as a problem that Israel has no declared borders! Well, if Israel did declare borders, I bet these Arabs wouldn't like that either! I think the real problem is an Arab demand to obliterate Jewish rights in the region. And the complaint about undeclared borders is simply a demand to steal Jewish land. Fine. If the Arabs think Israel is a pushover, I can understand that. But if the Arabs truly fear Israel, as they say they do, I have only one thing to say about all this, namely: "if you truly fear the Israelis, stop tweaking their noses and stealing their land...show them some respect instead." It is as simple as that.
Meanwhile, I think that Abraham feels that the central Arab demand is for one more little Arab state. And I disagree. As I said, I think the issue is Jewish rights (not even Arab rights). The Jews are in favor of human rights for Jews, while many Arabs can't abide that.
On the issue of settlements, Abraham advises the Israelis not to indulge in expanding them even though such action is permitted. One shouldn't do stuff just because it is legal, it may be unwise or provocative! Hey, he ought to give some of the same advice to the Arabs! Both sides need real rights. And he ought to demand equal rights for everyone.
