People around the world have found inspiration in the story of Lance Armstrong--a world-class athlete nearly struck down by cancer, only to recover and win the Tour de France, the multiday bicycle race famous for its grueling intensity. Armstrong is a thoroughgoing Texan jock, and the changes brought to his life by his illness are startling and powerful, but he's just not interested in wearing a hero suit. While his vocabulary is a bit on the he-man side (highest compliment to his wife: "she's a stud"), his actions will melt the most hard-bitten souls: a cancer foundation and benefit bike ride, his astonishing commitment to training that got him past countless hurdles, loyalty to the people and corporations that never gave up on him. There's serious medical detail here, which may not be for the faint of heart; from chemo to surgical procedures to his wife's in vitro fertilization, you won't be spared a single x-ray, IV drip, or unfortunate side effect. Athletes and coaches everywhere will benefit from the same extraordinary detail provided about his training sessions--every aching tendon, every rainy afternoon, and every small triumph during his long recovery is here in living color. It's Not About the Bike is the perfect title for this book about life, death, illness, family, setbacks, and triumphs, but not especially about the bike. --Jill Lightner

1/2 The Story: After "BIKE" Read "WAR".......2007-09-20
IT'S NOT ABOUT THE BIKE gives you a wonderful, inside view of Lance Armstrong. A great read. But only half the story...
Don't miss out on the "outer view," Lance through the eyes of a good reporter. LANCE ARMSTRONG'S WAR: ONE MAN'S BATTLE AGAINST FATE, FAME, LOVE, DEATH, SCANDAL, AND A FEW OTHER RIVALS ON THE ROAD TO THE TOUR DE FRANCE by Daniel Coyle is simply marvelous.
The two books belong together.
Dr. Kirtland C Peterson
Good at the beginning....but it IS about the bike........2007-09-17
I was eager to read this book, I saw Lance on several t.v. shows, his battle with cancer interested me because my mom also had cancer at an early age (29), so I bought the book with the hope of learning what made him strong, wondering: how can he inspire others? Well, the first half was pretty good, I was amazed at how much the cancer took over his body and the grueling recovery. I was in awe of Kik and how she stood by him, along thinking he was a humble, family man. I was wrong. The latter part of the book indeed was "all about the bike" going on and on about all the prep for the upcoming races, the TDF (the biggest, most prestigous bike race), the move to Europe (for the bike) and all the proper cycling terms...ho hum. I almost left that part unread, but I hate doing that, so I trudged on. I was sad to find out later after having read the book, that he no longer was with Kik and his children, but doing just spendidly peddling away and loving his singlehood.
I think in writing this book I only learned that for Lance it IS about the bike (and himself). He seems cold, egotistical and unappreciative of those who sacrificed for him. Is that what it takes to get to the top??
Must read.......2007-09-16
This is a must read for cancer survivors, the most inspirational book I have ever read!
It's not about the bike: My jouney back to life.......2007-09-02
This book has been one of the most inspirational books that I have ever read. Now whenever I'm at the gym I just say to myself, come on mike if Lance can do it so can you. I raced bicycles myself when I was younger and after breaking my collarbone at sixteen years old I thought biking was over for me; If only I realized at that age a broken bone was nothing compared to Lance. Thank you Lance Armstrong.
Inspirational.......2007-08-31
This book is an inspiration. It shows the hardships of battling cancer and the effort of recovery. Lance Armstrong is one of the most driven individuals I've ever read about; I could not put it down. Recommended for anyone and everyone, MUST READ!!!

Eye-opening and thought-provoking.......2007-09-19
Not only is the book wonderfully written, it is eye-opening in every respect. Everybody knows somebody with cancer, but who really knows what they go through? This book brought me one step closer to understanding what it means to be a cancer patient. I was also fascinated by all the cycling references and stories. I finished it in 3 days.
READ THIS BOOK: It changed me. Beautiful writing........2006-09-19
I picked up this book in the juice store in San Jose on a trip. Someone I knew had given a moving speech on Lance, and I love inspiring stories. I have read a few. None, and I mean none so damn well written. The words, the descriptions, and the story, is so deep, and so well-written, that it was incredibly hard to put down. You start to get to know a real person, and all his defeats, his hardship, his anger, and his emergence as a real winner in face of it all. It is the best read in all of my carefully selected dozen books in the last few months. I highly recommend it!!! I love you Lance Armstrong! You are amazing!!

quick & informative.......2007-01-22
We are adopting from Guatemala and have been desperate to find books to read on the country & culture. This offered a quick glance into the specifics of the country: a brief history, economy, politics, religion, the people, etc. Very good for a general overview of Guatemala. I would recommend to any adopting parent that is going there!
Guatemala from the eyes of a concerned American.......2006-03-17
Seldom have I seen such an easy read which is a concise, accurate, and to-the-point review of the Guatemalan Maya and their progeny from the Classic Period to the 1990s. In the interests of brevity, early cultural history is scanned, but the essential information is covered from 209 AD to the entrada of the Spanish Conquistadors led by the cruel Pedro de Alvarado and continuing through the multiple exploitations that occurred to recent days. The role of the United Fruit Company, the military, and the CIA are discussed frankly. Topics of the economy and society are succinctly covered as are current religious practices with the syncretism of the Catholic, Mayan, and the encroaching protestant sects. Visit Guatemala and you will know that these tough, resilient people, both Mayan and Ladino, are not to be denied. While there, visit with individuals who survived the Civil War and hear their stories. You can not help but become a sympathetic traveler, not just a tourist.
Volums have been written about the turmoil in Guatemala and elsewhere in Central America, but if your time is limited, here is a helpful shortcut.
nice and to the point.......2005-08-08
i'm adopting a child from guatemala soon and wanted to get a good, general overview of the country. it's an easy read and i learned enough to be dangerous....
great overview of Guatemala's history and culture.......2000-02-01
This title offers an easily readable introduction to Guatemala. It is great for the first-time traveler to Guatemala who wants to understand the modern country in the context of its history and culture. It explains the current status of Guatemala and its uneasy balance between the remaining Mayan culture and the ladinos. The book is a quick and enjoyable read--truly a great orientation. It also points out how the intrusion of the U.S. CIA interrupted Guatemala's transition toward agrarian reform--an eye opener for me, anyway. Read and learn!

Book Description
This is the most accurate and comprehensive checklist of birds ever published in a single volume. First published over twenty years ago, The Howard and Moore Checklist was the first such compact list to include not only all the known species in the world but subspecies too. This new edition of the highly respected reference volume has been fully revised and updated throughout. Enlarged significantly, it has benefited from the input of five regional consultants--one for each of the Americas, Africa, Asia, Australasia, and the Palaearctic--who have assisted with a thorough and rigorous reassessment of all taxonomic data. This review has led to the inclusion of many valuable new footnotes and references; there are some 4,000 footnotes explaining taxonomic choices, and 3,000 references. All authorities for newly described taxa (whether recognized now or not) are given with full references, for the first time in any checklist.
The introductory sections set forth the rationale of the sequence of families adopted as well as key concepts and new developments in the study of avian taxonomy; discussed are the relative attributes of the Biological Species Concept and the Phylogenic Species Concept, which are critical to our understanding of taxonomy and related issues. Also covered are new developments in taxonomy; those areas where consensus is fast developing are highlighted. Finally, all main entries and synonyms are indexed by English and scientific names--the latter to subspecies level for the first time.
- The most accurate and comprehensive taxonomic checklist of birds of the world ever published in a single volume
- Now in its third, thoroughly revised and updated edition
- Existing data rigorously referenced by a team of regional experts
- All species and subspecies described since the mid-1980s fully referenced, for the first time in any checklist
- Around 4,000 footnotes explaining taxonomic choices, and 3,000 references including all authorities for recently described taxa
- Introductory sections discuss the rationale behind the list sequence, as well as key concepts and new developments in the study of avian taxonomy.
- All taxa fully indexed by English and scientific names--the latter to subspecies level for the first time

The Complete Checklist of the Birds of the World - A Review.......2006-02-24
This is the only work I have come across so far dealing with all known species as well as subspecies of birds of the world. Each species is listed with all known geographic subspecies (if any) with full scientific name (i.e. including author and year). Also, the editors add a review of the incorrect scientific nomenclature in current use, for example, Psittacula calthorpae is widely spelt as Psittacula calthropae, which is incorrect according to the editors. The last section of the book contains an extensive bibliography (of some 2000 references), so this is useful to anyone who will be reading further about the subject. I highly recommend this work for anyone serious about birds.

Howard & Moore's Checklist of the Birds of the World.......2000-12-16
This is the first checklist since James L. Peters checklist was completed by ornithologists after his death that includes the names of avian subspecies known at the time of printing. Though the name alone is entered, with no credits or source listed, this is still the only volume that brings the lists of avian species and subspecies current through the mid-1990's. Howard & Moore's checklist is a valuable reference tool for any student with the need for a reasonably current listing of avian species and subspecies. The index is excellent and complete for all genera and species, but it does not index the subspecies. This is the only reason for the book's 4-star rating, rather than the 5-star rating it would otherwise deserve.
