Simplifies Standards-Based Grading.......2006-07-24
I chose this book on the recommendation of the superintendent of schools in the county where I teach and my children attend school. The language is clear and easy to understand. As a teacher, I am familiar with the goals behind standards-based grading, but I find that many parents have misunderstandings. The whole first chapter is devoted to explaining the language of the book. I plan to make it available to the parents in my classroom this year. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to understand what standards-based grading REALLY is.

Book Description
Since man's earliest days there has been conflict and, also from that point, unconventional forms of action where the norm was abandoned and the unorthodox employed. Here, David Rooney selects examples of the leaders who, for personal, religious, tribal or national ambitions, have been trailblazers in this form of warfare. Tracing the origins of guerrilla theories back to the Maccabees, the author moves on through the Napoleonic Age and the Boer Wars before considering Michael Collins, Mao Tse Tung, T. E. Lawrence, Castro and Guevara, and the Guerrillas of World War Two before considering the current situation with Al Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden. The irregularity of this form of military action seems so pertinent in an age where convention and tradition in all walks of life is quickly abandoned in search of fast results; the warrior of the 21st century is more likely to adopt unconventional strategies than ever before. The topic is one of public debate and this explanation of its evolution can only increase our understanding and awareness of the topic. THE AUTHOR David Rooney has taught in many important institutions including the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Amongst his previously published titles are the popular Wingate and the Chindits, Burma Victory and Military Mavericks. He lives in Cambridge.
Customer Reviews:
Informative, but dry. Historical, but opinionated........2006-08-06
Perhaps this book would've been less of a disappointment had it been packaged better, but I found it to be more of a low key reference to the psyche of selected guerrilas than as a reference to their techniques and operations. In this regard, it would suit well for inclusion into a sophisticated high school report or an unsophisticated college one; the information being useful but the telling is errant and rather dry.
It was hard for me to determine whether this was supposed to be a historical guide on the subject, or a biased commentary of the author. For example, he states in the Epilogue (2004 - The Guerrila Scene), regarding the religious influence upon guerrila leaders, "What tragedy for the world that not one of the great spiritual leaders -- Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Muhammad or the Buddha -- was brave enough to say that he did not believe in life after death." Is he kidding???
I found this remark exceptionally strange as I cannot recall a single religious leader in history (whether Pharaoh or Pope) who did not believe unconditionally in an after life -- the fundamental basis of religion itself.
On the section regarding Che Guevara and his intense hatred of American industrial corporations, one is led to belief that the author is speaking instead of saying, for example, "It was Guevara's belief that society was wronged by..." or, perhaps, "This led to Che believing that..." Instead, this books zeros in on the 'corrupt corporation' more than the corrupt governments that obviously also existed. A fair and impartial balance would've been nice here.
Furthermore, in the section on Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda -- the topic perhaps most critical for today -- there is surprisingly very little information on the group or its leader, most of the article "setting the stage" with an indoctrination into the Soviet-Afghan war and very little follow on from that point forward with the exception of a brief comical input -- such as when he discussed the irony that Bin Laden might've read Issac Azimov's (an American Jew) THE FOUNDATION, which translated into Arabic is Al-Qaeda and tells the story of a leader who carries on after his death through pre-recorded videos.
After reading this particular article I developed a strong distaste that the author was more than a little sympathetic towards Bin Laden -- 9/11 being mentioned primarily as a date, with no strong relevance to either Bin Laden or Al-Qaeda. Of course, 767s flying into commercial buildings is not necessarily a 'guerrilla' tactic, but why then include Bin Laden at all if the whole person is not analyzed?
Perhaps, I have been too critical in my analysis, but I was hoping that this book would spend more time on 'how' these famous figures became so legendary instead of why (obviously, they all hated someone). As Sun-Tzu and Clausewitz seemed to be continually mentioned as required reading by all of Mr. Rooney's guerrillas, might I then suggest that the serious reader of military history turn to those texts instead of this one?
For the serious student only.......2005-08-31
I was disappointed myself but there is a wealth of information in here just was looking for more detail on the individuals themselves and how they did what the did. This is incredible detail on the wars themeselves and the people that led it but not what I was personally looking for. Tough read. For the real serious student of history I would say.
Interesting, yet lacking a coherent theme.......2005-05-11
David Rooney has provided us with an interesting history of some of the most well known guerilla warriors, yet this book lacks focus. A series of articles detailing particular guerillas provides background on each person and the movement they were associated with and includes information on each movement's strategy and tactics. However, the biggest drawback of this book is Rooney's treating history like it is one damn thing after another. Rooney fails to show the reader how guerilla warfare has progressed in any way, shape or form. Instead he concludes that nothing much at all has changed from the time of Sun Tzu. His conclusion that religion has added a terrible ingredient to terrorism is true enough, but Rooney's thesis that terrorism would not exist to the degree it does if it wasn't for religion lacks evidence to back it up. Rooney forgets that World War II, replete with terrorist acts, was the bloodiest war ever conducted and at it's root was the atheism of Nazi Germany and of the Soviet Union.
Still, all and all, a valuable addition to the subject in terms of the overview of several key guerillas it provides. It does not advance the thesis of how guerilla warfare is conducted and this is the weakness of the book.

The O'Reilly Factor for Kids: A Survival Guide for America's Families

The O'Reilly Factor isn't just the name of Bill O'Reilly's popular talk show on the Fox News Channel anymore--it's also the title of his book, which, appropriately enough, actually reads like a TV show. The narrative rarely proceeds for more than a few paragraphs before a bold-faced "This Just In" or "Bulletin" pops up on the page and breaks the stream of thought--sort of like a commercial interruption. This provides an ideal forum for O'Reilly to sound off on any number of topics with lots of verve but not too much depth. There are breezy chapters here on money, media, religion, race, and sex, among others. O'Reilly dislikes many things, and he isn't shy about sharing his opinions: "SUVs should be immediately outlawed," he rants. Here's O'Reilly on President Clinton: "What a ridiculous waste!" Attorney General Janet Reno is a "ridiculous, incompetent woman" and President Clinton's "primary 'enabler.'"
This is not a subtle book, and its bombastic approach would be even more grating if it weren't for several flashes of self-deprecation, such as when the author shares a negative piece of viewer mail, or when he writes, "In case you haven't noticed, I'm a cocky bastard." Sometimes O'Reilly's put-downs are creative and funny: "If God has a sense of humor, as I believe he does, [Al Sharpton and David Duke] will be sharing a sauna in the netherworld. With one thermostat." And he's good at illustrating his points with outrageous details. In criticizing the bloated federal budget, for instance, he points to these shockers: $230,000 for a study of housefly sex habits, $27,000 for an analysis of why prisoners want to escape, and $100,000 to find out why Americans don't like beets. (To which he replies: "Houseflies mate when no one is looking. Prisoners don't like prison. Beets don't taste good.") O'Reilly is often considered something of a conservative, but he can also play the blue-collar populist: "The rich want us to believe that anyone can make the quantum leap from bowling league to country club by just working a little harder. That's supposed to keep us motivated and quiet." Fans of his TV show will probably appreciate this cantankerous book. --John J. Miller

Now four seasons strong, Bill O'Reilly's nightly cable news program, "The O'Reilly Factor," is one of the hottest shows on the air. In book form, The O'Reilly Factor has sold over a million copies and spent fourteen weeks at the top of the New York Times bestseller list.
Obviously, Bill O'Reilly has made his mark. His blunt, ironic, no-holds-barred style has earned him a devoted audience—friends and foes alike—who send him five thousand letters every week. "A lot of people love Bill O'Reilly, you see. Then again, a lot of people would like to punch Bill O'Reilly in the nose. The joke's on them, though. Bill O'Reilly, this brash New York guy with a brash show and a brash book, is becoming a huge media star."
NEW YORK OBSERVER
"He is a complicated man, at once belligerent and self-effacing, ambitious and determined to remain humble. He can be a loudmouth but also companionable. He is Everyman on a barstool, mad as hell, but with a wink."
NEWSWEEK
"This book bristles with assumptions, assessments, and attitudes that will either have you bobbing your head in agreement or shaking it in disbelief. No wonder O'Reilly's ratings are rising the way the stocks once did."
FORBES
"Personal anecdote meets political discourse in [The O'Reilly Factor] where O'Reilly is in a pure, heartfelt state. He's softhearted and enraged in equal measures. He's hard-driven and bemused by where his drive got him. He's the male sphinx as TV blabbermouth."

My grandmother read this book out loud to me and we really enjoyed itI had a glass of warm milk and her cookies and I want her to read it again to me.I want to be just like Bill someday. This book is fun and never boring too.
Surprisely good for a conservative analysis........2007-08-07
OK, so O'Reilly would not label himself a conservative. However, most people have lumped him into that category. I am not sure that in itself is correct. O'Reilly seems intelligent and moderate in many things a conservative would not be. For example, on gay pride, he states that he has nothing against being gay, but don't show your displeasure in goofy marches. Any sex should be kept in the bedroom. This shows the common sense of Bill O'Reilly as opposed the goofy opinions of some conservative commentators. Bill O'Reilly makes intelligent summations in this book that are hard to argue against.
This is an intelligent read for the politically minded. Although, I think O'Reilly has a big ego, his opinions are wise and bear the test of time.
Someone's Opinion. Good or Bad, Treat it as Such........2007-06-04
"Bill O'reilly's personal view of many things affecting our society" pretty much sums this up. The topics range from raising a child to the media as it affects our society. Much of what he writes are his personal views and opinions.
Whether you believe them or not this book is good to read just to become familiar with someone's opinion who regularly reports on the topics written about. Whatever your opinion of him (good or bad) reading a book like this has it's merits either way. If you believe the opinions, you have another reference. If you don't believe the opinions, you have a contrasting viewpoint for your arguments.
What you should NOT do is buy this book hoping to form an opinion for yourself just from his opinions and suddenly agree or disagree what he says without checking into it.
---*** THE BOTTOM LINE ***---
This book is someone's opinion. Treat it as such.
That being said, it is worthwhile to read and would be ideal to borrow, but worth purchasing as well.
A book to share.......2007-01-19
This is a book to share. "It's o.k that you don't know...but once you DO know, you have a responsibly to share the information"

Great Book!.......2006-01-16
Very good book and somewhat educational
This book makes for fun reading.......2002-05-11
Being a chukar hunter myself, I found this book to be enjoyable. Whether you hunt them or not, the book has a lot of good points. It doesn't tell all, but it does talk about the realities of chukar hunting. If you're looking for a text book, forget it. But if you want to read a book that is factual and fun at the same time, this is a great book.
If you hunt chukars or even uplands this book is for you..........2001-06-22
I've hunted chukars with a fever since I was able to carry a shotgun 25 years ago. Buddy Levy writes wonderfully and his passion, respect and understanding for this great game bird and the land they inhabit shines. It is obvious this book is personal and we are fortunate Levy has let us in.
I highly recommend you make the effort to share Levy's love of what it means to hunt chukars....
The only book on the subject and well done........1999-09-07
This is a literate and personal book, and a short one. As a long time chukar hunter, I think that it falls short in a couple of areas, or I would have rated it five stars.
This is not a "how to" book, although it contains a fair amount of information, and tips on gear.
Worth the money, and as I said, the only book (in English) on the subject.
Lofty opinion of himself.......1999-05-14
Like the high canyon slopes that chukars can be found at, Buddy Levy has a similarly lofty opinion of himself when chasing chukars. There are a lot of things I liked about this book - the technical material on chukars and their habitats, strategies etc. If you have ever hunted chukars, this book will stir your blood and get you pumped up for next season. But every once in a while, Buddy feels compelled to tell you how well he did something - waiting for birds to fly further away while his friend blazes away ineffectually at short range. Maybe that incident happened but a better writer might have reversed the roles to keep the reader on his side. He also suffers from those common maladies of outdoor writers- "thesaurus" mouth and excess spirituality. There is no need to describe every sensation associated with bird hunting with a large vocabulary. It has been done before and probably cannot be improved. Find some unique feature to describe. Not every step in the wilderness is a one of profound and deep meaning. Some of them are just hard, boring slogging.
The book is very short - not much more than a magazine essay. There is a chapter on gear that drops enough brand names to raise the topic of paid advertising but that is just nitpicking. I agree with him about Filson gear. It is worth the money .
For those of you who have stuck with this, I will now reveal the real reason I have been so critical of a book I did enjoy reading. In the section on birddogs, he discusses pointers and retrievers but fails to mention flushing dogs. As the proud owner of a springer spaniel that will hunt chukars until the cacti leaves him bloody, I can only say that was a major omission.
Anyway, if you like chukar hunting, buy this book if only for the winter hunt story. I could feel the wind blowing down my neck.

A picturebook story about a mouse's plan to save his avian friends from the bird-eating alligator of the first book.......2006-03-13
The sequel to "A Big Beaked, Big Bellied Bird Named Bill", Brendon Mouse's Big Idea To Save The Big Bird Bunch is a picturebook story about a mouse's plan to save his avian friends from the bird-eating alligator of the first book. The charming color illustrations of appealing animals with exaggerated proportions balance the story, with its moral that the greatest power comes from accepting and being true to oneself. The story's text is slightly more involved than that of typical picturebook; Brendon Mouse's Big Idea To Save The Big Bird Bunch is ideal for young readers age 4-9.
