Customer Reviews:
A little disapointed.......2007-09-13
This book was more about HRT than anything else. It could have been written by a pharmacutical company.
Pretty good overview..........2007-03-19
Not a bad review on HRT options. Really quite technical and full of details that anyone but a health care provider will have difuculty fully grasping, but for those laypeople motivated to read it, it will still be quite usefull. As a health care provider myself, I wish the book was less wordy and had more bullet point summary charts with just the facts listed about various treatment options. Still, good information overall, and once I get motivated enough to type up my own summary sheets, I will likely use the info quite a bit in practice.

A practical manual to assist the menopausal woman to greater comfort during her change of life.......2006-09-14
"Hot Flashes: 21 Non-Hormonal Strategies to Put Out the Fire" is a tool to empower women to survive menopause by giving tips to help women control their hot flashes, or 'put out the fire.' The author, Julie Calligaro, is a former nurse and practicing attorney, and an author of several other self-help books for women. In brief, Calligaro begins by suggesting that the woman begin by establishing a baseline of frequency, duration, severity, and triggers of her hot flashes, then try any or all of the following approaches: Paced breathing, regular exercise, black cohash, red clover, soy foods, acupuncture, avoidance of triggers, cessation of smoking, reduce weight until achieving a health weight, bathing/showering in tepid water, and lowering the temperature of surroundings, especially the bedroom. Additionally, these are 10 cooling strategies suggested: Wear cotton, not wool or synthetics. Dress in layers. Wear sleepwear that wicks sweat away from the skin. Carry a pocket fan. Have fans positioned around home and workplace. Meditate. Do yoga. Adjust your attitude about menopause. Use BeKool Hot Flash gel sheets for immediate cooling. Wear kleenex in your bra. Calligaro's final suggestion to the reader is to maintain regular physical checkups, pap smears, and breast exams. "Hot Flashes" is a practical manual to assist the menopausal woman to greater comfort during her change of life.
Relief!.......2006-05-27
I've been bothered by hot flashes on and off for quite some time and I've been looking for safe but effective ways to reduce them. Julie Calligaro's book has been a huge help to me. The information is clearly written and easy to understand. The methods she describes to reduce hot flashes and the tips she includes to make flashes easier to bear are excellent.

A guidebook for a hormonal roller coaster.......2006-03-22
I found Julie Calligaro's book,"Hot Flashes-21 Non-Hormonal Strategies to Put Out the Fire", an easy read and a good reference. I especially appreciated the review of herbs, supplements and extracts. Also, the chapter on 'Depression in Midlife' reminded me of the additude adjustments we (I) need to periodically make!! A helpful guidebook through the hormonal roller coaster associated with menopause. Ann Klein
I'm cool !!!.......2006-03-17
Hot Flashes 21 Non-Hormonal Strategies to Put Out the Fire is the book to have if you are struggling with Hot Flashes. After taking HRT for many years to control my hot flashes, I was told by my doctor that I would have to stop the medication and just deal with hot flashes. They returned with a vengeance, just as they had for the author, Julie Calligaro. Well, just dealing with them is easier said than done. So, a big thank you to Ms. Calligaro for her comprehensive book on safe and effective strategies to combat Hot Flashes. I am now very cool.
This book put out my fire!.......2006-02-27
This book changed my life. With several simple, safe and inexpensive steps I now feel more in control of my hot flashes. I ordered the nightclothes recommended and now sleep better than I have in quite some time. Most importantly I re-evaluated my outlook on this major life change and found that merely changing my attitude has made a difference. I have recommended this book to many of my friends and family.

Book Description
An up-to-the-minute revision of the enormously informative and comforting book that describes everything you need to know about the perimenopause, the menopause and the postmenopause.
Women are now regularly living into their eighties and beyond, but are often hobbled by destructive cardiovascular, bone and other symptomatic problems that begin early in their perimenopause and that rob them of their freedom of movement, their personal decision-making opportunities and their joy ion living. The goal of this book is to guide all women, starting early on in life through the so-called silent menopausal passage, by offering information about nutrition, fitness, hormone replacement therapy and lifestyle changes so that they may remain active and unencumbered almost as long as they live. This revised edition discusses the latest medical findings about hormone replacement therapies, the new food groups, changes in fat allowances, the role of antioxidants in cardiovascular protection, osteoporosis and the treatment of ovarian and breast cancer, including the use of Tamoxifen. Dr. Gillespie also covers:
- Premature menopause
- The perimenopause and PMS
- Diet and exercise
- Sexuallity and birth control
- Breast disorders
- Hysterectomies
- Aging
- The doctor-patient relationship...and much more.

fine if you think menopause is a disease.......2000-04-16
Unless you are very good at separating medical fact from the attitude it is presented in, or are already convinced menopause is a disease, stick to the much more balanced "The Complete Book of Menopause: Every Woman's Guide to Good Health" by Carol Landau et al. I intend to. If however, you want to take the approach menopause is an illness and fight it with one form of therapy or other, you will like this one.

Hot Flash Queen is Right on The Money.......2005-10-08
I personally know the author of this book. All womem, of different sizes, ages, can begin peri-monopause and/or full meanopause. I kmow this as at 31 years old I have been diagnosed with peri-menopause. This litle life savor of a book can be a 'life saver'. It doesn't necessarily mean that all menopause symptoms will 'vanish', but the book let's everyone know that women do understand each other and that they are not alone. The little tips to help with the syndromes are out of this world. It's about time someone took the knowledge, personal knowlegde/journies through this horiffic change that occurs to a womans body and the tells 'truth'. We no longer have to listen to doctors tell us women that there is nothing that can be done, especially if your doctor tends to be a pill pusher. I am not writing this on behalf of BJ, who is a friend of mine, but I am writing this from my own experiences and using her book being peri-menopausal myself, it has helped me. Check the book out, it will help. It's not very expensive and you can order them online at bookstores, Blockbuster and of course through Amazon. Read through the whole thing and just see how her and many other issues in the book are related to issues you yourself have. You'll be impressed as she has done ixtensive researching on our menapousal systems.

Book Description
Today, Iran constitutes the single greatest challenge to the United States and the War on Terror. In the Persian Gulf and Central Asia, Iranian policymakers are busy cobbling together alliances intended to marginalize the United States and its Coalition allies. Iran remains the world's most active sponsor of terrorism, fueling the activities of Hezbollah, al-Qaeda, and insurgents in Iraq. And, through its nuclear advances, Iran is gaining the capability to catastrophically alter the geopolitical balance of power far beyond its immediate neighborhood. As evidence of this threat mounts, one thing remains crystal clear to Ilan Berman: Washington is woefully unprepared to deal with this mounting peril. Berman's approach is hard-hitting, provocative and unflinchingly critical. Yet he takes the exploration of Iran's menace one step further, providing what has been missing so far in the foreign policy discourse regarding Iran -- practical policy prescriptions designed to contain Iran's strategic ambitions.
Customer Reviews:
Read Elsewhere to Learn About Iran and the U.S........2007-08-19
After reading perhaps half a dozen books on the history of Iran and Iranian-U.S. relations, I would rate this book at the absolute bottom. I knew I was in for a rough ride when the author effusively praises Bush's "Preemptive Doctrine" as a "groundbreaking new policy" without the slightist consideration of what it would mean for the world if all countries felt free to attack at will any other country they imagine MIGHT attack them.
You will not find a balanced or even rational approach to the topic here. The book is a primitive, ahistorical attack piece written by a Superhawk who is attempting to set up the U.S. to do Israel's dirty work in the region. Proof by assertion and undocumented opinion are the primary tools of this author's trade. Repeat until you believe it: Iran Bad, U.S. Good.
Scott Ritter's "Target Iran - the Truth About the White House's Plans for Regime Change" and Ali Ansari's "Confronting Iran: the failure of American foreign policy and the next great crisis in the Middle East" both give the reader a more balanced and informed view of the complexities of Iranian-U.S. tensions.
If you hate Christendom, believe the first few reviewers.......2007-01-30
If not, discard their obvious racism toward Jews and hatred for the country and culture which has (somewhat foolishly?) taken them in. They want to see America at the mercy of the sword of Islam--a dubious mercy, by all accounts.
I don't and I'll bet you don't either.
Another Biased Political Pamphlet.......2006-10-19
As many other Zionist propaganda materials, this is a distorted, deceptive
collection of "prefabricated information" made up by previous "so called" writers and/or commentators which is a waste of time to read it. The socio-political affiliation of the writer speaks for itself and there is no need to struggle to find out where he comes from.
Zionist Propaganda.......2006-10-19
Completely unsubstantiated and false claims geared towards the Neo-Con and Zionist audience. There's much more truth to the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" than this piece of work.
The author, Ilan Berman, is a Vice President for Policy at the American Foreign Policy Council, a Zionist organization in bed with the "Israel-first" AIPAC lobby in Washington, DC.
If you want to read literature authored by otherwise intellectually honest and gutsy Jewish authors check out any of Noam Chomsky's books or Norman G. Finkelstein's "The Holocaust Industry".
A complete waste of time and devoid of intellectual honesty that contributes to the seeds of war and misunderstanding. Enough American youth have been sacrificed at the altar of Zionism/Israel.
Misleading and inaccurate.......2006-08-07
Based on sources including Israeli intelligence, Mujahedin-e Khalq and right-wing US think tanks, this book repeats a whole raft of unsubstantiated accusations designed to show that Iran is pulling all the strings behind all America's problems.
Forget Saudi Arabia. Forget the west's role in training Islamic militants in Afghanistan. Forget the west's support for the Shah before 1979 and forget the support for Saddam Hussein. Forget the backing for Israeli in every adventure through half a century of dis-appropriating and then persecuting the Palestinians. Forget the mismanagment of Iraq (if that's what it is) that has taken the country nearer and nearer complete disaster.
Forget even intellectual honesty. Mohammad Khatami is a "reformist" in quotation marks, but George Bush's invasion of Iraq was the Coalition of the Willing (no quotation marks and capital letters).
Forget even basic accuracy. The author thinks North Korea was "the only Asian member of the axis of evil". So where exactly is Iran, Mr Berman? South America?
And there is not even a basic understanding of Iran - well, why should there be? It seems Mr Berman hasn't even bothered to visit. He thinks with a "moderate, pluralistic, post-totalitarian government in Iran, the US would gain a new friend in the Persian Gulf and a valuable ally in the War on Terror".
Really, are you sure? Is that why the Americans overthrew Mossadegh, the most popular leader of Iran in modern history (mentioned in this book, once, in passing)?
But then the only Iranians Berman has talked to are former supporters of the Shah (one of whose former newspaper barons is frequently cited, the man who peddled the totally erroneous story that Jews in Iran would have to wear yellow stars) and the Mujahedin-e Khalq.
Maybe this is a question of the US right - the blurb calls Berman "one of the rising stars of US foreign policy" - needing to create external enemies for domestic purposes. That could be a reason to call Iran a "superpower" that is dedicated to "destroying the United States" (have you checked out the military disparity between Iran and the US?).
Otherwise it's simply laughable.
Avoid.

Customer Reviews:
A good but complicated book!.......2000-03-25
Planetwatch is a very good book with many interesting experiments, from tracing the moon to viewing Jupiter. The experiments range in level from beginner to expert. I like many of the experiments, but even the beginner ones are sometimes very complicated for anyone that has never tried astronomy before. It is still a very good book, though. It shares a lot of information about the solar system and makes you aware of what possible things an amateur astronomer could see. Overall, it is a very good astronomy book for beginners and advanced alike.
