The author has done a wonderful job conveying a complex set of issues in a user friendly manner. This killer disease is the subject of intense research and it was good to get an up to date perspective on the topic. I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in being empowered on the subject.

This book let me finally understand where my doctor was coming from. I read the book three times, I found it so useful. Being able to understand both the potential dangers that lie ahead and how to avoid them has made me a stronger person as I confront this disease. I have read several other books on hepatitis C, and I liked this one the best. I really liked learning about the PEGYLATED Interferons as well as the safe use of alternative antioxidant treatments along with the ones my doctor is prescribing. This book seems really up to date. I am pumped about it.

A non-technical, easy to read approach. Short chapters cover the realm of topics and FAQ's. This may not be the only book you read if you want an in depth knowledge of the disease but it is excelent starter book. The information is current and timely. Timely information is important on this subject.

A little dated but still a knockout of a book.......2004-08-04
You wouldn't want to base your entire medical future on a book from 1999 (literally the last century and in medical terms several generations ago in terms of available knowledge) but Carol Turkington has written a wonderful book that fully and frankly explains the ramifications of a disease that has been the subject of much mystification and ignorance since his discovery and classification. Why? Why the darkness? I suppose because many people contract the illness through needle use, the suggestion is that people who suffer from it have brough it on themselves, that they deserve to suffer. Hogwash! And Carol Turkington helps set the record straight on this issue right away. Thank goodness for clear thinkers like Ms, Turkington.
If everyone in America read this book, we'd be a far healthier nation, and based on recent speeches given at the Boston Democratic Convention, we'd be a nation dedicated to stopping disease instead of sweeping it under the carpet with everything else we don't care to think about. Let's get some research done, and help save lives, before it's too late for all of us, and only our children left alive to reap the benefits of the education we spurned.

This is the most informational book I have read on the disease of Hepatitis C. It goes through the different stages, treatments, alternative medicines. It also helps you understand what tp expect as the disease progresses. A must have for anyone battling this horrible illness.

Formed out of the Royal Irish Constabulary at the time of Partition, the RUC's history is predictably a turbulent one right through to its replacement in 2001 by the Police Service of Northern Ireland. Few police forces in the world have suffered so grievously as the RUC and this book is a fitting memorial to the sacrifices made in the interests of the civil population it was determined to protect. Throughout its history, it has not only had to perform normal police duties but contain the ever present IRA threat.
In 1969, the climate changed and ushered in a new and even more violent era of sectarian strife. The emergence of extreme nationalist organizations posed grave problems and, with the RUC in a prime role, the position of the Chief Constable was hugely important.
This book tells the story of a remarkable police force without fear or favor. Ironically its reward for containing a hugely challenging internal security situation and at the same time policing the community traditionally was its disbandment.

Dogmatism is bad; very bad.......2007-07-09
Like almost any politician, there are things I admire about them. Mao implemented measures that were preferable to that of Chiang Kai-shek, but nevertheless, if Mao ever stood trial, he would deserve nothing short of torture...then shot.
This book is filled with Mao quotes; some good, but most dull. What's interesting about the book isn't its content, but the fact that this book was distributed, and required remembrance among many students, as if it were a religious manuscript - which it essentially became. The Little Red Book became, yes, equivalent to a religious textbook whose doctrines became responsible for the deaths of millions of dissidents. This is an example of why dogmatism of any kind is horrible. It was not his "Marxist" belief that killed people, as any "title" can be attached to any dogmatic person out to attain political power; it was just THAT which killed people - his aim for political power. "Communism" just happened to be the leading alternative to what Chiang Kai-shek represented, which was state capitalism, or "mercantilism" (the allowance of private property within a governmental framework). Titles like "communist", "socialist", "capitalist", "anarchist", "Marxist" have been entirely evacuated of any essence, as China under Mao considered itself "socialist", yet was a dictatorship, while Britain calls itself "socialist" too, and there's far more political freedom.
So read this book if you're having a difficult time sleeping, or interested in knowing why Mao disregards personal freedom and subjects them to the Chinese state.

What a Whacko!!! Great insight into the mindset from this time period, though. If you're a history buff like me, you'll appreciate this book and it's relevance to how it shaped China's people and policies. Those policies even have some implications into today's China!!!
The most re(a)d book of the past century?.......2007-05-17
Well, maybe not the most read (although still read very much), but probably the most red. Puns aside, this book is a very important read for us today. I think the best way to show this is to make the kind of list that Mao likes to.
1. It contains the central doctrine of a superpower.
2. It is written by a great conqueror and a successful military and civic dictator.
3. It teaches us practicable and useful rules for working with or against others.
4. It indoctrinates the reader with noble ideals.
5. It teaches us about modern Chinese thought and culture.
6. It helps us understand communism: a very influential movement in history.
7. It contains a strong model of rhetoric, proven effective!
I am not a communist, and I am strongly opposed to communism, but by looking past the communism I was able to get a lot of knowledge and wisdom out of this book about other things, such as concepts of social motivation and organization, and also of strategy, and of course a persuasive rhetorical model. Mao was very conversant with the Chinese classics such as the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Lao Tzu, Confucius and the Art of War. His book of quotations is clearly modelled on the pithy, aphoristic writings of the classical Chinese philosophers and strategists. In a guarded way, I feel that Mao has written a book of that tradition and of that status. It is clearly styled after the great Chinese classics and is even more relevant than them for us today who are interested in these classics since Mao actually put his philosophies and principles to the test on a grand scale and was successful, and he is closer to us in time than they are. Very few of us have accomplished anything like what he did, so, a full study of the ethics of it aside, there is a huge amount of useful wisdom and learning contained between the covers of this book; and not only Machiavellian!
The 22-year-old student admitted it was a hoax.......2005-12-27
...the student confessed that he had made it up after being confronted by the professor who had repeated the story to a Standard-Times reporter.
The professor, Brian Glyn Williams, said he went to his former student's house and asked about inconsistencies in his story. The 22-year-old student admitted it was a hoax, Williams said.

Hawks fly at very high altitudes, sometimes over water, and thus their flight behavior and migration patterns are extremely difficult to study. Now, based on nearly ten years of research, this book provides the most complete analysis to date of how hawks migrate. Paul Kerlinger has employed both direct observations and radar techniques to obtain a much more accurate understanding of the migratory behavior of hawks and the "decisions" they make in flight. And, he has integrated data on the flight behavior of raptors in general with information about their ecology, physiology, evolution, and nonmigratory behavior.
Kerlinger begins with an overview, discussing ecology and geography, research methods, natural history, and evolution, and atmospheric structure. He then addresses specific aspects of flight behavior: aerodynamics, morphology, mechanics, direction, altitude, flocking, water crossing, speed selection, daily distance traveled, and flight strategies. Kerlinger describes each aspect of behavior quantitatively, testing mechanistic hypotheses. In conclusion, he examines how migrants integrate these behavioral components. Throughout the text he draws comparisons between the migratory flight behavior of hawks and that of other taxa. By means of such comparisons, researchers can gain insight into the selective pressures that shape the behavior of migrant species.

Book includes over 85 photographs, 60 tables, 48 maps, and 40 figures. Here is an excerpt from the book's preface:
" The book is divided into six parts. Part 1 describes field study methods and discusses hawk identification. Part 2 provides an extensive survey of the most important or useful eastern North American hawk lookouts. The survey thus serves a a catalog of sites of exceptional ornithological importance. Hopefully conservationists will be able to benefit from this survey by being able to visit many more hawk lookouts than previously were known to them. Parts 3 through 6 detail technical aspects of autumn hawk migrations. Even novices will find much of this information of value, however. The list of literature cited also will lead interested persons to sources of much fascinating reading."
