Book Description
This volume is the result of the clinical, administrative, and advocacy experience that Dr. Plenk gained during the growth and development of The Children's Center in Salt Lake City. Using the day-treatment group therapy model, young children with emotional problems have been helped to eliminate difficulties that affect their education at a very early age. As a community agency built on a shoestring budget, the state, federal, and local levels have contributed to major improvements in the learning and family life of many individuals associated with The Children's Center. This is their story written by the founder and executive director, now retired.
Book Description
Led by Lieutenant Colonel Evans Carlson, the 2nd Marine Raider commandos were the celebrated "Gung Ho Battalion." In August 1942, as a diversion to the invasion of Guad-alcanal, the 219 Raiders traveled 2,000 miles by submarine to Makin Atoll. In one of the most daring attacks of World War II, they caused substantial damage to the Japanese-before making a nightmarishly hazardous withdrawal.
To an America badly in need of heroes, Carlson's Raid was the answer to a prayer. But the raid's long-term consequences were bloodier than anyone could have imagined. And, ultimately, the controversial Carlson's high profile would be his undoing.
This is the full story of that daring mission, its unforeseen consequences, and the decision made when the fighting was toughest-kept secret for fifty years-that would have brought a far different conclusion to the famous Makin Raid.

Well Written Account of a Forgotten yet Exciting Action in the Pacific War.......2006-07-27
Smith is a pretty good writer for this style of book, essentially a regimental history. That genre, though used as source material is particularly excrable in writing style. But Smith pulls of a masterly work which could be claim of larger and more campaign-centred histories.
The essentials of Carlson's biography set up the mission requirements and the advent of this particularly class-less based fighting unit in WWII. Carlson has attracted a lot of controversy in life and death with his commando concept for the marines. In other countries such a figure as Carlson -- brash, socialist, schooled in guerrilla warfare by basically travelling with Mao's troops in pre-WWII China -- would not attract such attention. But the US with its particularly ideological slant on the world, anti-collectivist attitude, and mere fact that the US Marine Corps is perhaps one of the most conservative of institutions, it was inevitable that a man who believed in mythic leadership -- the notion that leaders lead by example -- would get under the skins of conservatives, turf defenders and those advocates of grander strategies.
Smith did not really cover too much of Carlson's ideology except to stated that he was no communist, but something worse -- "a socialist with a genuine fear of God." Such a man with a mission was dangerous in established institutions and went very far for the same reason a Orde Wingate -- he was a soldier that fights.
The book should be standard reading for any special operations person and tells the value of not only preparation, but how even the best laid plans can, and often will, go astray. Many people found fault in Carlson. I found his ability to improvise to be quirky and inspiring. I also found the fact that the raiders were not expecting snipers in trees also a glaring fault in their training.
I do not think there is much to be gained in arguing over the military value of the raid. It was paltry. Not even a blip on the screen of combat that presaged and followed. But it was a test run of a daring concept.
The value of the raider concept for combat in WWII is more controversial. There are those that argue you get greater bang for your buck by integrating these fighting men into traditional combat units. Certainly this was proved with the British-Commonwealth Commando raiding concept. It was also proved in Burma where clearly Orde Wingate's Chindits would have been better employed as a traditional British line divisions.
I like the book and rate it highly. I think it highly ironic that in 1943 the raider concept was ultimately crushed by the Marine "forces that be" and their units integrated into regular Marine Divisions. This contrasts with the obscene plethora of troops in the US Armed Forces who regard themselves as "Special Forces" -- to such a degree that the term has beome largely meaningless.
Factual histories reveal how messy reality is..........2006-01-05
Evans Fordyce Carlson was a loose cannon. The Raider concept was "emerging doctrine" (MilSpeak for "make up stuff as the situation develops"). Carlson's legacy is the modern Marine Corps fire team--a humble honor that Carlson would probably appreciate. As for the official record, "maverick" is an understatement.
George W. Smith begins "Carlson's Raid" with the events of Sunday, December 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor. The author also gives a brief biography of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, a key player in the Raider story. James Roosevelt, FDR's son and Carlson's battalion executive officer, and of course the President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, were the reason that Carlson wound up with one of the two Raider battalions. The Marine Corps was bitterly opposed to forming any "special force" because the official dogma was that every Marine was special. (Note: in 2005 the United States Marine Corps finally recanted this long-held doctrine and established a presence in the Special Operations Command--SOCOM. "Carlson's Raid" was published prior to this event and only time will tell how this radical change will affect the Corps.)
The bulk of the book is about the Makin raid from preparation to aftermath. One chapter is devoted to Carlson's Raiders' Long Patrol and another is devoted to the disbanding of the Raiders. I like bibliographies and indexes because they allow me to go to other sources and quickly find things.
I came to the conclusion that the Makin Raid was a defeat for Headquarters Marine Corps because even after being organized and equipped specifically for raiding and undergoing extensive (for the time) training the raid was all but a disaster. This was an HQMC defeat because it proved that "ordinary Marine line companies" were NOT capable of conducting Makin Island type operations. The Raider companies themselves needed refinement in training and better equipment. Radios and outboard motors were not up to the task of keeping raid elements in touch with the mother ship or each other, and of crashing through the surf line. No wonder Raider units were "squandered" as line infantry on Guadalcanal and then disbanded! The Para-Marines were never used as parachute infantry, either.
I think that "Carlson's Raid" is great history because it shows how fouled up war fighting can be. Smith leaves me with more questions than answers, which is a good thing. There are gaps in the record on the Makin Island operation. George W. Smith put a lot of information into "Carlson's Raid" because military operations do not happen in a clinical, isolated setting. FDR's "interference" in "military operations" and the Hollywood connection (the movie "Gung Ho!") all cloud the issue of success and failure. In military operations the difference between defeat and victory is often merely a matter of opinion.
Gung Ho!.......2001-09-08
George W. Smith has done a superb job of chronicling WW2's 2d Marine Raider Battalion. He tells the true story of the exploits of the Raiders, and details the life story of their leader, Evans F. Carlson.
Far from being a dry account of the facts of the 1942 raid on Makin Atoll in the Pacific, this tale recounts the events leading up the the actual skirmish with the Japanese, and tells the story of the battle in riveting first person detail. From their disorganized entry onto the island, their successful assault on the waiting Japanese forces, and their almost disastrous exodus through fierce ocean waves back to the submarines, the reader is captivated by their unique tale. For the first time, the conclusion to the attack is laid out in all its controversial detail. It is a highly compelling story that has waited 59 years to be told in its entirety.
Kudos to Mr. Smith for an exceptional, factual account of a significant World War II battle, one that captures the attention of history buffs and laypeople alike.
Shakin' Makin With Peatross Too.......2001-09-06
I enjoyed the book, however, a lot more can be learned of the Raiders by reading Oscar Peatross' book Bless 'em All, which is out of print, unfortunately; however, excerpts are available at one of the Marine Raider websites. The chapter on The Long Patrol at the end of the book, is short and somewhat superficial, and a story truly deserving of a novel in itself. Imagine being on patrol and living in the jungles of Guadalcanal for 32 days. Ahoy Raiders! We are truly indebted and thank you for your sacrifices.
Marine Raiders Takin' Makin.......2001-08-23
This is a fairly brief(233pp.) account of the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion's assault on a Japanese held Central Pacific island in the first year of the Pacific War during WWII. The author outlines the formation of elite Marine commando units and the intra-service squabbling it entailed. He then takes you into the early career of the leader, Evans Carlson, and its influence on his philosophy of covert operations such as these units were tasked with. He later follows with a descriptive narrative of the preparation, training, and execution of the mission of invading Butaritari Island in Makin Atoll in the Gilbert Islands. I applaud his use of oral interviews of survivors of the operation. My only critique was the ineffective sprinkling of humorous events throughout which did not blend well with the flow of the story. Overall I highly recommend this book to those interested in learning more about one of the elite Marine units of WWII.

Book Description
The most definitive volume on guerrilla warfare during the Civil War features a foreword by the distinguished scholar Bruce Catton and 22 photos and maps. Gray Ghosts introduces a cast of daring and dashing Southern soldiers: John Singleton Mosby, Turner Ashby, and Harry Gilmore, among others. These men used irregular troops and even more irregular methods against the invading Union Army. A fast-paced narrative describes daredevil acts performed by these small, bold bands of fighters, and shows how, over and over again, they managed to thwart Union efforts. Defiant to the end, the “gray ghosts” and rebel raiders resisted surrender after Appomattox and continued to fight until all hope was gone.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty Darn Good!.......2005-01-30
This is as good an account of Confederate guerilla activities in the Eastern Theater of operations as I have run across. For me, this book helped me understand 3 things:
1)The war was intensely continuous. It never stopped. Most historians focus on the major battles being as they were the key tests of strength between North and South. But the war was not made up of 15 or 20 segmented, key events. It was not a sometimes thing. It was brutally constant. These people were angry with each other, killing angry, and went out of their way to make their point as often as possibly.
2)The North's battle plan was exceedingly difficult to execute. Virginia's topography was not suited to a clean advance. Holding territory taken was difficult. Supply lines had to be thin, extended and vulnerable. The land itself had to be worth many divisions to Southern forces. And they took maximum advantage of the terrain.
3)The South fought a campaign of terror and was damn good at it. Both sides fought to win. Both sides fought to intimidate. The South was exceptional at this through the summer of 1864 but then the tide changed and when it did it was a tidal wave of unimagined proportions.
It is amazing how small some of these bands were that descended from the mountains to attack their enemy and then disappear. They snatched couriers to learn of Union movements and plans, destroyed bridges and railroad service, attacked sleeping camps and captured supply trains and prisoners by the thousands. They attacked in the evening, at noon, in the morning and at night. They even captured three Union generals from their beds, almost without firing a shot.
This is a good book, one worth reading. It drives home the intensity and continuous nature of this conflict. You will not be disappointed.
Dense History.......2002-12-02
This is an incredibly dense historical account of Confederate guerrilla warfare in the areas of northern and western Virginia. The author obviously did his homework with hundreds of quotes and references. The book was so detailed as to occasionally lose the reader. A map certainly would have helped. I got the feeling that every single guerrilla attack was accounted for in this book.
On the strong side were some amusing and touching accounts of individuals and incidents. On the weak side was the page after page of oh-so-so similar accounts of attacks. The book also centered on the Virginia area guerrillas with hardly a mention of those in Missouri and Kansas.
The author's theory, that the Civil War - or at least Lee's surrender - was delayed by at least months by the work of the guerrillas is well-substantiated in the book. However, I think the author would have been better served to apend more time on the larger picture and overview and less time on every derailment on the B&O Railroad.
Worth reading for a serious Civil War buff. A bit too much for the casual reader of Civil War material.

The Worst Book Ever.......2002-01-02
This book was horrible. It didn't have enough pictures, and wasn't in large enough print. They used complex words that I couldn't understand. The cover was also an embarrisment to the book! So don't buy this book EVER! If you do you would be out the money.. but may have a new door stop!

Fascinating read.......2004-07-28
TWO YEARS is an extraordinary first-person account of some of the most exciting naval history in the civil war. Filled with drama and action, this book grips the reader from page one. Although it would have been helpful if the editors had included a glossary of slang from that era, the book is easily read and understood despite being an historical account.

While the United States flexes its economic and military muscles around the world as the dominant global player, it may soon have company. According to the Washington Post's T.R. Reid, the nations of Europe are setting aside differences to form an entity that's gaining strength, all seemingly unbeknownst to the U.S. and its citizens. The new Europe, Reid says, "has more people, more wealth, and more trade than the United States of America," plus more leverage gained through membership in international organizations and generous foreign aid policies that reap political clout. Reid tells how European countries were willing to discontinue their individual centuries-old currencies and adopt the Euro, the monetary unit that is now a dominant force in world markets. This is noteworthy not just for exploring the considerable economic impact of the Euro, but also for what that spirit of cooperation means for every facet of Europe in the 21st century, where governments and citizens alike believe that the rewards of banding together are worth a loss in sovereignty. Reid's most compelling portrait of this trend is in the young Europeans known as "Generation E" who see themselves not as Spaniards or Czechs but simply as Europeans. To illustrate America's obliviousness to this trend, Reid tells of former GE CEO Jack Welch, who never bothered to factor European objections into a proposed multi-billion dollar merger with Honeywell, leading to the deal being torpedoed and Welch disgraced. But what is most striking in The United States of Europe is the contrast between the new Europe and the United States. The Europeans cannot match the raw military size of the U.S., but by mixing wealth with diplomacy and continental unity (helped along by antipathy toward George W. Bush's brand of Americanism), they are forming an innovative and powerful superpower. --John Moe
Book Description
To Americans accustomed to unilateralism abroad and social belt-tightening at home, few books could be more revelatoryÂor controversialÂthan this timely, lucid, and informative portrait of the new European Union.
Now comprising 25 nations and 450 million citizens, the EU has more people, more wealth, and more votes on every international body than the United States. It eschews military force but offers guaranteed health care and free university educations. And the new ÂUnited States of Europe is determined to be a superpower. Tracing the EUÂ's emergence from the ruins of World War II and its influence everywhere from international courts to supermarket shelves, T. R. Reid explores the challenge it poses to American political and economic supremacy. The United States of Europe is essential reading.

js.......2007-06-10
This is a well written book which is very enlightening. As a US citizen it is important to recognize our diminishing stature worldwide. Its time for America to take some cues from Europe to improve our standard of living, save America's middle class, and become globally competative.
Poorly researched and overly sympathetic........2007-06-01
T.R. Reid's "The United States of Europe" doesn't stand up to scrutiny. The basic premise seems sound enough, but the book sounds like it was lifted from an EU pamphlet. Reid doesn't engage in analysis, he engages in pure praise without any visible criticism of the EU. Does he mean to say that the EU and its member states have absolutely no problems? That's hard to believe.
Furthermore, his theory doesn't hold up when looking at the Iraq war. In fact, Reid hardly mentions this critical event except in a handful of pages in his book. If Europe is as united as he claims and sees itself as such a counter force to American power, then why did so many European states support invasion including Italy, Spain, and Denmark among others? Surely the EU would have been able to exercise influence over its members if the book's claims were true. Reid hardly even considers the event.
In fact, France and Germany's prominent resistance to the war was, as is usually the case in the face of American militarism, helpless to do anything. Reid explains this by saying that Europe goes for diplomacy and deals mainly with reconstruction and nation building (the "peacekeepers"). So essentially Europe is powerless to stop military aggression, even from a close ally and instead picks up the slack after the damage is done proving that "soft power" still cannot match military might.
You can get a good feel for this book's academic content by flipping to the notes/works cited section. Most scholarly books have at the least a dozen pages, often a chapter purely for citations. Reid has a total of roughly 5 sources that he used to write a 300 page book on. In other words, Reid seems to have done no academic research which would explain the poor content and analysis of this book.
The underlying idea is promising, but without substantial research to confirm his claims, Reid's book is useless.
The United States of Europe is a must-read........2007-03-24
The United States of Europe is an intelligent, well-written and eye-opening look at the European Union; its history, its euro, its ever growing market and political muscle. Although the book is clearly aimed at the US, Europeans will certainly benefit from reading it.
T. R. Reid writes in a strong and confident style, submits names, dates and numbers with authority, and anecdotes like a belly-laughing buddy on a Saturday night over a couple of Heinekens.
The United States of Europe is a must-read.
great book!.......2007-02-20
The book is great in content, and it gives readers a sense of how contemporary Europeans think of their current union and how that will challenge United State's role as superpower in today's world. The author uses great analogies and it's a very down to earth book that anyone with a college degree can appreciate.
The Other Side of the Ocean.......2007-01-22
This is a great book. Reid spells out the ascendancy of Europe from the ashes of WWII into a corporate nanny state - no politics in that statement, it just seems like a deliberate choice on the part of the Europeans.
The history alone is worthwhile but Reid has several sections which should be taught in schools as Things We Should Have Paid Attention To Instead Of Our Usual Pop Culture Navel-Gazing:
1. The rise of the EU as a force deliberately created as a counterbalance to American hegemony;
2. The implied racism of seeing China/Japan/India ascendancy as a threat to our livelihoods while cheerfully accepting European ownership of significant elements of American commerce and standards because they're white and our Nanna (or Nanna's nanna) lived there once;
3. The invasion of Iraq and the whole "Freedom Fries" and Rummy's dismissal of the "Old Europe" still resonates over there and will color American/European relations for a good long while after 43 goes back to brush-cutting;
4. America arguably has the world's strongest military in some part because the Europeans choose not to compete with us, not because they couldn't. They are happy to let us pay for the carrier battle groups and 4,000 casualties in Iraq. They're only invested in Afghanistan because that's relevant to their interests;
5. How the rise of the euro currency is a threat to American dominance and if it is successful in replacing the dollar as the investment of choice (and things appear to be heading that way) that will be the beginning of a possible slide into Argentina-like currency devaluation. Then we will find out that all of the yellow ribbons in the world imploring God's support of America don't amount to a whole heck of a lot vis-a-vis international currency market speculation;
6. Jack Welch was a God-like figure in Corporate America, but after he met the Europeans they were the ones wearing the pants.
Great powers stay great because they hunger for greatness. That sounds like an idiotic maxim from a strategic planning offsite, but it's true.
The leaderships of Europe, China and India hunger for it. Do we? Read this book and form your own answer.

nearly perfect.......2002-04-05
"Cataclysmic Variable Stars: How and Why They Vary" by Coel Hellier is
one of those rare books that successfully toes the line between being a
scientific and a popular book. This book is so popular with AAVSO HQ staff that it
frequently is taken home and has to be tracked down when someone needs it!
It works as both a reference and a straight-through read. As a reference,
one can confidentally refer to it when coming across any type of unfamiliar
CV. As a straight-through read, it is clearly structured and written in a
lively style that makes it easy to go from start to finish.
The majority of the book is broken up into sections about the different
types of CVs. Each section is well illustrated with light curves (many coming
from AAVSO observations from observers like you), historical background, a
breakdown of the system with easy-to-read diagrams, theory, and more. When
mathematics is introduced it is always in a sidebar or appendix which allows
those interested to get involved but does not require an understanding of the
equations for those who wish to avoid math.
The book is not simply an encyclopedia of CVs, though. It covers everything
from basic visual and CCD observing techniques to how to derive a stellar mass
from your observations.
This is a book that every CV lover should own along with anyone who is
interested in learning more about these enigmatic objects. The layout,
illustrations, structure, and writing have all come together to create what is
almost the perfect book on CVs. I hope the team that put together this book
continues to work together on future endevours. If so, the future of variable
star publications looks not variable at all, but bright and steady.
Thanks, Coel, for writing this book.......2001-06-26
Thanks, Coel, this book has made my job of involving undergraduates in my research (on CVs, of course) much easier. It is suitable for amateurs, too, being self-contained with its chapter on CCD photometry. It's also nicely produced, and yet the price is quite reasonable...: I have no qualms with telling them to go out and buy their own copies, necessary since both my copies are already in the hands of students.
"Absolutely Astonishing".......2001-06-07
Gives the reader a full understanding of why these cataclysmic variable stars are so important to understanding the cosmos. Amateur astronomers will love this. Don't be surprised to find yourself gazing at a variable star next trip to the backyard.

Book Description
This book contains the proceedings of IAU Symposium No. 151 `Evolutionary Processes in Interacting Binary Stars,' which was held from 5 to 9 August 1991 in Cordóba, Argentina.
The primary aim of this conference was to review and evaluate our current understanding of the evolutionary processes in wide variety of interacting binary stars from their births to their deaths. Subjects included the formation of binaries, mass flow and transfer, accretion processes, and binaries with collapsed components, such as novae, X-ray binaries and binary pulsars. As the field covered is both broad and diverse, there were in all thirty-seven invited talks; sixty-two contributed papers were also presented. In addition, these proceedings contain comments from a panel discussion of the major unsolved problems of interacting binary stars.

Book Description
This conference examines the progress in the field of interacting binaries discussing a number of relevant astrophysical problems regarding the interaction between stars in binary systems, such as the physics of neutron stars and black holes that accrete matter from their companion stars and the study of the end points of stellar evolution, like supernovae and gamma-ray bursts. This proceedings provides an updated overview of both observations and theory. Topics include: compact binaries in globular clusters, millisecond binary pulsars, supernovae from massive binary systems and GRBs, accretion on black holes and microquasars, accretion on white dwarfs and novae, rapid variability and secular evolution of LMX-Ray binaries, supernovae type Ia, as well as secular evolution of high-mass x-ray binaries.

Book Description
This introductory account provides the physical background to an understanding of interacting binary stars. These are star systems in which the pair of members is close enough to each other to cause interactions. Several such systems are strong sources of stellar x-rays. The contributions, all by active researchers, concentrate on three areas of current interest which serve to illustrate the problems encountered generally in these binary systems. The topics covered are: binary star evolution, contact binary stars, and cataclysmic variable stars. The book brings a graduate student to the point of being able to start independent research.

Book Description
Short-period binaries run the gamut from widely separated stars to black-hole pairs; in between are systems that include neutron stars and white dwarfs, and partially evolved systems such as tidally distorted and over-contact systems. These objects represent stages of evolution of binary stars, and their degrees of separation provide critical clues to how their evolutionary paths differ from that of single stars. The widest and least distorted systems provide astronomers with the essential precise data needed to study all stars: mass and radius. The interactions of binary star components, on the other hand, provide a natural laboratory to observe how the matter in these stars behaves under different and often varying physical conditions. Thus, cataclysmic variables with and without overpoweringly strong magnetic fields, and stars with densities from that found in the Sun to the degenerate matter of white dwarfs and the ultra-compact states of neutron stars and black holes are all discussed. The extensive index permits cross-referencing.
The objects being discussed are carefully defined in each section and the contributions are organized according to the compactness of the binaries that are treated. Some treatments are of individual objects; others are more general.
The observational techniques that are used by the contributors to throw light on these objects include gravitational wave investigations, X-ray, radio, infrared, and optical astronomy; and the ways in which these objects are analyzed is also discussed. Among the specific objects reported is the Double Pulsar, highlighting what observations of this object tell us about fundamental physics.
The level of the book is appropriate for both professional astronomers in the field as well as people interested in other fields and dedicated amateur astronomers.
