Head injury can quickly thrust families into a situation filled with fear, confusion and uncertainty. They are forced to make critical decisions at a time of severe emotional stress, and many times are unable to effectively communicate with medical personnel.

Over a period of several months, intensive care nurses and doctors from one of the country's leading head injury centers noted the most common questions asked by families and patients. Their direct, commonsense answers give comfort to those supporting the patient on the journey to recovery.

This book makes a great educational tool. Its easy reading style and clear illustrations help patients and their families cope with the changes that are about to occur in their lives. It also helps facilitate communication between the family and the health care team.

Interviews with families who suddenly found themselves dealing with this tragedy add a personal dimension to the book. Their insight offers readers additional tips for coping, as well as an understanding of what they can expect on the road to rehabilitation.

4 out of 5 stars Valuable contribution to understanding Gettysburg.......2006-07-13

and much else. However I found Longstreet's style dry bordering on the mind-numbing. That said, I have always been in the camp that didn't hold Longstreet to blame for the problems of the second and even the third day at Gettysburg. Lee delegated too much authority and seemed lazy during those few crucial days to survey the ground (if he had I believe he would have concured with JL). Also Gettysburg was one of those times when a great army had a few bad days starting with the location of the battle, the quality of the ANV commanders first on the scene (poor), lack of intelligence, overconfidence etc... If JL had been in Ewell's position on the first day there wouldn't have been a second or a third day. Finally, if JL had been allowed to take over for the disaster that was Braxton Bragg, the battle for Tennesse may have ended very differently.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Example of Post-bellum Memoirs.......2005-09-18

From Manassas to Appomattox by James Longstreet is an excellent example of a Post-bellum memoir, and it is written in clear and dignified voice. The memoir is of course the account of the actions of General James Longstreet, CSA during the American Civil War, his thoughts on various events, and recollections of his command and various individuals whose names are household words to the Civil War historian. As a person with only a passing interest in the American Civil War, I read this book for its purely biographical information, in other words, to get a feel for James Longstreet, who appears to be the underdog of Confederate commanders. I found the book easy to read, though at times I felt mired down in the military minutiae that fills most of the pages, but quickly recovered by small personal tidbits interspersed therein. I also enjoyed reading about his relationship with Robert E. Lee, and the way Longstreet handled himself in a very blunt, upfront manner. I would recommend this book to anyone who wanted to read a fine example of memoir writing from the period, Civil War buffs (who of course have undoubtedly already enjoyed this book), and to researchers wanting insight to the major battles of the American Civil War.

4 out of 5 stars From one who knows it best..........2005-06-30

Longstreet was subjected to criticism for his performance at Gettysburg as well as Lee, Longstreet survived and wrote his memoirs to be read and he made it a focus of the book to justify his actions and put the blame on others. Lee never wrote his memoirs, probably to his credit. At the end of the war Lee was of the opinion that it is over and needs to be put in the past. That is not to say that he did not blame Longstreet and others for the mishap at Gettysburg, he just never voiced his opinion. It was not in the man's nature. The character of his main critic also has to be questioned, Jubal Early was renowned for being hotheaded and alienating other people. he was referred to by Lee as "My bad old man."

It cannot be criticized of his work that the piece centers on himself, they are his memoirs about the war. It also cannot be critisized that he did not cover extensively his post-war years because the book is not called Manassas to Reconstruction. It has to be taken as what it is, a valuable insight into a man who was there when it all happened and a study into the man who understood trench warfare before its true advent.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous memoir from a Southern hero.......2004-10-15

General James Longstreet, who has been unjustly accused and slandered for over a century, gives a factual account of the war and its effect on the South. He also gives invaluable biographical information on his early life and career, particularly the Mexican War, which has been overlooked by historians. A must-read for serious students of the War and for anyone else looking for accounts of a soldiering life in the nineteenth century.

    4 out of 5 stars A Great Book...for the Most Part.......2004-03-28

With Lee's death soonafter the War, Longstreet was the most prominent Confederate to write memoirs on the War, and given his responsibilities in both the East and West, he was in a position to offer more insight.

Longstreet is very descriptive when it comes to setting the scene of battle, but he describes the armies' movements very generally. For this purpose, the reader has to be familiar with the battles, which have been covered in depth by other books, so when it comes to summarizing campaigns, the memoirs should be seen as complementary information. In passing, it should be kept in mind that Longstreet couldn't come into possession of all the information available now, and thus his memoirs can't be considered a case closed definitive account.

As others have mentioned, Longstreet isn't afraid to pull punches, which he does at times quite poignantly on Lee's mishaps, most notably of course at Gettysburg. In other instances, he defends himself by criticising others. When Fitz Lee notes that R.E. Lee called Longstreet the hardest man to move in the Army (a comment that can't be confirmed/refuted), he comes to his own defense in part by criticising Jackson during the 7 Days campaign. Hindsight is 20/20, and Longstreet's arguments in the conduct of certain campaigns certainly benefit from the passing of 30 years. At a number of places, Longstreet believes that if his suggestions were followed, the results could have destroyed Union armies or won the War. We'll never be sure if he's right or wrong on these matters.

The memoirs are most interesting during Longstreet's analysis of who deserves credit/shame at certain battles. But where it is most interesting is in rebutting criticism of his war record. The best part of the memoirs are the 3 chapters on each day at Gettysburg, since the postwar criticism of Fitz Lee and Jubal Early aim mostly at that. Fitz Lee most notably mentions comments by R.E. Lee criticising Longstreet that can't be confirmed/refuted with Lee's death. Longstreet does a good job of fending off criticisms of his record for the most part, usually including letters written by other officers to his defense.

The only problem I had with the memoirs was that I found the post bellum chapter of the memoirs woefully short. Throughout the memoirs, Longstreet notes his relationship with certain officers on both sides, including his strong one with U.S. Grant. He briefly covers the controversy in 67 that stirred the anti Longstreet feelings in the South. However, we know Longstreet's battles concerning his record after the War, to the extent that he wasn't even invited to the Army of Northern Virginia's reunion. Longstreet makes almost no mention of this. After alluding to his postbellum relationship with Lee souring due to "political differences" throughout the book, Longstreet doesn't elaborate on it in the postbellum chapter.

In all, Longstreet's memoirs make for a very good general read of the important campaigns and relationships between the CSA's big names. He doesn't dodge accusations and he's not hesitant to place blame where he feels it belongs, whether it's himself or, more often, General Early. That Longstreet isn't afraid to criticize the Southern deities, which in itself drew criticism of his war record from proponents of the Lost Cause, lends a more evenhanded credence to his memoirs, making them a very worthy read.

In Them, British humorist Jon Ronson relates his misadventures as he engages an assortment of theorists and activists residing on the fringes of the political, religious, and sociological spectrum. His subjects include Omar Bakri Mohammed, the point man for a holy war against Britain (Ronson paints him as a wily buffoon); a hypocritical but engaging Ku Klux Klan leader; participants in the Ruby Ridge and Waco, Texas, battles; the Irish Protestant firebrand Ian Paisley; and David Ickes, who believes that the semi-human descendants of evil extraterrestrial 12-foot-tall lizards walk among us. Despite these characters' disparities, they are bound by a belief in the Bilderberg Group, the "secret rulers of the world." In a final chapter, Ronson manages, with surprising ease, to penetrate these rulers' very lair. He writes with wry, faux-naive wit and eschews didacticism, instead letting his subjects' words and actions speak for themselves. --H. O'Billovitch

                    Book Description

A wide variety of extremist groups -- Islamic fundamentalists, neo-Nazis -- share the oddly similar belief that a tiny shadowy elite rule the world from a secret room. In Them, journalist Jon Ronson has joined the extremists to track down the fabled secret room.

As a journalist and a Jew, Ronson was often considered one of "Them" but he had no idea if their meetings actually took place. Was he just not invited? Them takes us across three continents and into the secret room. Along the way he meets Omar Bakri Mohammed, considered one of the most dangerous men in Great Britain, PR-savvy Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard Thom Robb, and the survivors of Ruby Ridge. He is chased by men in dark glasses and unmasked as a Jew in the middle of a Jihad training camp. In the forests of northern California he even witnesses CEOs and leading politicians -- like Dick Cheney and George Bush -- undertake a bizarre owl ritual.

Ronson's investigations, by turns creepy and comical, reveal some alarming things about the looking-glass world of "us" and "them." Them is a deep and fascinating look at the lives and minds of extremists. Are the extremists onto something? Or is Jon Ronson becoming one of them?

3 out of 5 stars Quite an adventure..........2007-08-27

While I thoroughly appreciate all the years and work that must have gone into writing this book, I felt there were some major things missing. It was ultimately very interesting and stimulating - but it was presented in a weird way.
Ronson seemed to be in all the right places in all the right times, receiving information most journalists would be lucky to get. Instead, he emphasized all the wrong parts - some sections I just didn't understand why they were included. Don't expect a documentation of how these extremists came to be or what they do - it is more of a highly empathetic journey into their daily lives and how they are "just like us".

1 out of 5 stars Up Your Ronson.......2007-03-18

Jon Ronson, the investigative journalist who investigates, gets scared, runs away and then calls them all nincompoops.

A little on Jon Ronson, the broadsheet columnist.

Jon Ronson's early work in the front pages of The Guardian glossy was quickly followed by a slow march to the back during the mid 90's as he became increasingly interesting due to his slide into code word psssjournalism where upon he became obsessed with the counter code word 'teddy' which was actually a double mock of the term 'chimney' because the 'chimney' was indeed an abolitionist in terms of the 'yellow' two steps back and to the right but not the 'chimney sweep' reverse incline double retort.

Jon Ronson is now the leading contender for editorship of The Guardian, which is a conspiracy not even Jon Ronson can understand. Which is a pity because his local rag is full o colour coded racism.

                    5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2007-01-06

Fascinating material presented in a well written objective format. At first i was skeptical but apparently the NY Times and various other newspapers have investigated his work and given it a thumbs up.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting, easy read you will not be able to put down!.......2006-04-28

This was an intriguing book: half a book on a conspiracy theory, half an objective analysis of people considered on the fringes on society.

Throughout the book, the author tries to track down the secret group of elite leaders who run the world... huh? While its true that Ronson does indeed find bizarre secret rituals and ceremonies during his search of the rulers of the world, I never really found myself buying into the theory, but it is an odd thread connecting different worlds he explores.

I especially enjoyed reading his experiences with Omar Bakri, the jolly Jihadist who jokes with the author about whipping him and condemning him to hell and the pleasant, Woody Allen-esque leader of the KKK. People who share hateful views and are reviled by the general public can be affable and even comical when described by the author.

One note about the book: you should be up to date on your current events. It's better to have a background on the who's who in each chapter than to blindy dive in. This was a very fun and quick read, whatever your views. I think most people would enjoy this book. :)

                      Book Description

The Field Guide to the Birds of New Zealand is astonishingly comprehensive, covering the identification, status, and distribution of wild birds seen anywhere in the New Zealand region. Up to date and featuring the latest research, this handy volume represents every bird species of New Zealand in seventy-four stunning, original, color paintings by a leading New Zealand bird artist, including rare and recently extinct species.

Renowned New Zealand bird experts Barrie Heather and Hugh Robertson have written a brief and informative identification guide which provides the reader with a summary of what is known about the birds of New Zealand. Each page contains a color plate and accompanying distribution map on the facing page. The maps provide sufficient plumage and behavioral details that should help identify the species, sex and/or age of the bird in the field as well as where species breeding in New Zealand may be found in suitable habitat. An additional handbook section provides details on distribution, populations, conservation, breeding, behavior, and feeding habitats of each species. Maps for vagrants, stragglers, and non-native seabirds, and for migratory waders (which can turn up in any estuary around the coast) are also included in this section.

The only field guide to New Zealand birds officially endorsed by the Ornithological Society of New Zealand, the Field Guide to the Birds of New Zealand is a wonderful addition to the libraries of birders, nature enthusiasts, and travelers alike.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive guide to birds of New Zealand..........2005-04-18

And I'm quite sure any Kiwi birder would agree with that. My review is of the revised edition of this book [ISBN 0670-89370-6].

This most certainly is the most complete guide to the birds of NZ with beautiful and accurate slates. I love its neat layout - slates on the right, description and ID on the left. There are no spill overs so its as simple as that. Where necessary, there are distribution diagrams with a detailed key which makes for very effective guide.

Because NZ birds are so unique, you will love the additional Handbook section which introduces the different genuses. This comes after the field guide, at the back of the book. Everything is very detailed and you can tell that this book has been crafted with alot of attention and care. Which must be why this is the only field guide to NZ birds officially endorsed by the Ornithological Society of NZ.

A downside may be that it's a little bulky to haul around the field, but using it is such a joy that this short coming is quickly compensated.

The book for any self-respecting and serious birder, and an indispensible resource for naturalists or the curious amateur.

5 out of 5 stars The definative field guide to New Zealand birds.......1997-11-14

New Zealand is indeed fortunate in the number of bird books which have been published over the past century. Back in 1953, the Ornithological Society of NZ published a "Checklist of New Zealand Birds". In 1959, the Society approached RA Falla, RB Sibson & EG Turbott to compile a practical field guide.

In 1966, this appeared as "A Field Guide to the Birds of New Zealand", published by Collins. It rapidly became the bible for several generations of field ornithologists. Several revisions of the original field guide were made, up to 1978. They all grace my bookshelf.

Finally, in 1976, almost 20 years later, this new guide has appeared. It isn't quite as portable as the original, but contains a wealth of information. The guide is divided into two sections.

The first 150 pages are an indentification guide, with brief descriptions and distribution maps facing colour illustrations of the species. The remaining 260 pages provide much more detail on the distribution, population status, breeding and behaviour of the 328 endemic and introduced bird species found in New Zealand.

Barrie and Hugh are to be congratulated on the depth of research they have done to compile the text. Similarly, Derek Onley's illustrations give much better detail of recognition features than do most photographs.

This is the one essential book for local naturalists, or overseas birders visiting New Zealand.

5 out of 5 stars Appreciating NZ's unique wildlife - and keeping it.......2007-04-29

I must confess I had found the eco-mystical title and the drab cover of this book to be barriers that long delayed me picking it up. Even the subtitle does little to hint at the real value in it. What a mistake. It meant I actually read every other book I could find on the subject before this one when it should have been the first that I read.

Kerry-Jayne is an expert on NZ's ecology, and its weird and wonderful products of isolated evolution. In Flight of the Huia she places an immense amount of useful, and even surprising, information in an easy to follow framework for a non-academic reader. The framework of evolutionary processes and history presented here is invaluable in itself and I haven't encountered similar elsewhere in an easily accessible form. The wealth of detail can be skimmed or skipped, but then easily returned to if needed. This makes the book worth buying rather than just borrowing. However I found the detail so facinating I read it through as I went.

Kerry-Jayne comes across as a practical person. There's a clear intellectual honesty in her writing, which is not always the case with NZ's eco-academics. In contrast this book's sub-narrative seems always seeking broad buy-in.

More's the pity if it hasn't reached as wide a readership as it could through a poor marketing job by the publisher.

As for my recommendation: if you're interested in this topic and you've 'bought the bumper sticker', as they say, then buy this book too. It'll help make sure your mind is also where your mouth is.
