An anthropological study that compares a central London neighborhood with a London suburb in terms of family and community life, mobility, social status, and social interaction. The main sources of the authors' information were sample interviews from the two populaces. The main themes of this book are the differences between the London suburb and the East End, and the differences between the middle and working-class residents.

                      Book Description

The story of the South African Special Forces ("The Recces"), from inception in the 1960s to disbandment in 1993. A unique account of one of South Africa's premier units, masters in the art of reconnaissance and clandestine warfare. Pro rata, the most highly decorated unit during the wars in Angola and Namibia/SWA. Special forces operators were carefully selected and trained to gather covert strategic and tactical information about enemy activities. They learned how to observe silently, harass the enemy and destroy selected targets -- all behind enemy lines. Frequently required to face great dread, they had to learn to control that fear in order to survive. This book brings the reconnaissance soldiers - the recces - to those who have wondered about what kind of men they were. Their families, their heartaches, their sufferings and achievements. These men were not assassins who eliminated spies in hotel rooms. They were responsible men who had a sense of integrity and served their country proudly.

I found the book a good stratrch into a subject plagued with the taint of aparthied. Though it doesn't go into great depth .. it tells some good stories. It compliments any library on the conflicts of Southern Africa. Good photos and I enjoyed the CD that came with it.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting Subject, but .............2002-05-06

A fascinating story, as Special Forces operations tend to be. However, the author is obviously no professional writer, as the text is disjointed and difficult. Written as a history of each of the reconaissance regiments, some unit receive more attention than others. The actions of various individuals are highlighted, but there is little continuity or development of a consistant thread or theme throughout. Not so much a unit history, as a collection of anecdotes - which is a real pity.

This book provides a highly detailed account of the history, organisation, uniforms and insignia of South African Special Forces from their origins up to the early 90s – units such as the 44 Parachute Brigade, the Hunter Group and the infamous SWA Police COIN Unit 'Koevoet'. These elite units of the South African Defence Force and the special anti-terrorist units of the South African Police Forces comprised the largest, best trained and best equipped of any country in southern Africa. Robert Pitta and Jeff Fannell provide the text in a volume packed with photographs and illustrations.

A comprehensive and fascinating book, a good primer on the elite of the SADF and SA Police Services. Besides the Recce Commandos, covers such units as the SA Marines, the Police "Hunter" units of the 60s and 70s, and the 44 Para Brigade and Pathfinders. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Wish there was more........2000-09-24

Not much has been written about the South African Defense Forces. Like Isreal, South Africa of the late cold war was surrounded and under siege. It cannot invade and occupy forgien land. So instead the SADF raised commando units, from Recce Commandos and the Parabats to 32nd Battalion, to strike at their enemies to great effect. I wish that a deffinative book about South African special forces could be written and published in America.

                        Book Description

The author of an award-winning memoir about growing up black in Mississippi, Chalmers Archer turns his attention in this book to his experiences as one of the first members of the U.S. Army's Special Forces. His perspective is unique, not only as one of the first to wear the Green Beret but as a black man in the early days of armed forces integration. Archer participated in some of the earliest forays into Laos, long before Southeast Asia was in American headlines, and he was a member of the first U.S. unit to go into Vietnam. He trained the first Special Forces teams of the South Vietnamese army and participated in some of their earliest operations, many of them unknown until now because of their highly classified nature. He saved the lives of the first American and Vietnamese soldiers injured in war and also witnessed the first American combat death in Vietnam, holding the man in his arms as he died. His unit operated alongside the Central Intelligence Agency and helped influence American foreign policy. A self-described soldier-teacher, he developed and spread the early gospel of special warfare while serving in the Philippines, Hawaii, Korea, Taiwan, and Panama, as well as in Southeast Asia. All of these activities are fully chronicled in this book, but Archer's perspective as an African American in an elite unit of the U.S. armed forces in the 1950s gives his memoir additional depth and insight. It is an uplifting-though sometimes harrowing--story of struggle in unfamiliar environments and an eye-opening account of events little known today.

                        1 out of 5 stars Rather boring!.......2006-06-05

I found a used copy of the book in a bookstore and I am happy that I didn't pay the full price for it. From reading the title I expected something more exciting.
The book starts interestingly but becomes boring after the first half due to constant repetition of details and self-glorification by the author. He also put a lot of advertising for his first work into the book's contents.
It might be interesting for other readers but for me it was rather disappointing.

3 out of 5 stars how the Green Berets got to Vietnam.......2001-05-09

Chalmers Archer must have been a remarkable soldier, for he was a black Green Beret at a time when the U.S. Army Special Forces was almost entirely a lily-white outfit. His book belongs on the shelf of every student of the Green Berets.

It's not a knock-you-dead combat yarn like Jim Morris's "War Story"--Archer didn't really serve what you could call a combat tour in Vietnam. He was there much earlier, knocking about Southeast Asia in the years before there was a Vietnam War (or American War, as the Vietnamese prefer to call it). He was in Laos, Thailand, the Philippines, and of course Vietnam when the Green Berets were first staking out their claim to fame, and when men like Archer created the jungle-training practices that would make Special Forces the most effective American combat arm in South Vietnam.

To me, the most interesting anecdote is the account of the American training mission that was attacked by the Viet Cong as it graduated its first class of Vietnamese Special Forces. Officially, Captain Harry Cramer died of an accidental explosion, and he wasn't even listed on The Wall (the Vietnam war memorial in Washington, D.C.) until 1983. In fact, as Archer recalls, Crame died in a mortar attack, and he was the first American to be killed in that long war--21 October 1957.

This is a slight book--just 138 pages. How it can be priced at more than forty bucks is beyond me, so I'm glad to see that there are cut-rate copies available from the vendors of new-used books on this site.

A quarter of a century since the award of the last honours and decorations of the southern African country of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), this is your chance to own the definitive roll of medal recipients. Rhodesia Medal Roll is the first book to list all gazetted recipients of Rhodesian honours and decorations from their inception in 1970. It even includes over 1,700 previously unpublished awards made between September 1979 and the abolition of the Rhodesian honours system in October 1981. Authoritative: the product of two years' research in the United Kingdom, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Comprehensive: listing over 12,000 separate awards, including awards to foreign nationals and former members of the Rhodesian security forces Accessible: fully indexed by surname With a separate chapter for each award, Rhodesia Medal Roll's large type, spacious layout and generous size (over 6" by 9") make it a pleasure to use-whether researching medals or family history, or simply browsing. Awards are presented in date order, and a full alphabetical index means that it is simple to cross-check awards and confirm entitlements. A definitive record of the award of Rhodesian honours and decorations, and an indispensable companion for enthusiasts of genealogy, medals or military history of southern Africa.

This book covers South African covert operations from the 1960s to 1980s. It gives details of many undercover operations as far afield as Nigeria and includes many counter-insurgency operations and meddling in the affairs of South Africa's neighboors including raids on Maputo and Lesotho and Gabarone in Botswana. A very interesting, rip roaring account. Perhaps more interesting to those interested in the military than those interested in politics.

You have to take a step back and appretiate what these men went through. There is only one thing that comes to mind, they are harder than a bag of hard things, without a dought!

                                Book Description

In September 1999, an earthquake devastated much of Taiwan, toppling buildings, knocking out electricity, and killing 2,500 people. Within days, factories as far away as California and Texas began to close. Cut off from their supplies of semiconductor chips, companies like Dell and Hewlett-Packard began to shutter assembly lines and send workers home. A disaster that only a decade earlier would have been mainly local in nature almost cascaded into a grave global crisis. The quake, in an instant, illustrated just how closely connected the world had become and just how radically different are the risks we all now face.

End of the Line is the first real anatomy of globalization. It is the story of how American corporations created a global production system by exploding the traditional factory and casting the pieces to dozens of points around the world. It is the story of how free trade has made American citizens come to depend on the good will of people in very different nations, in very different regions of the world. It is a story of how executives and entrepreneurs at such companies as General Electric, Cisco, Dell, Microsoft, and Flextronics adapted their companies to a world in which America’s international policies were driven ever more by ideology rather than a focus on the long-term security and well-being of society.

Politicians have long claimed that free trade creates wealth and fosters global stability. Yet Lynn argues that the exact opposite may increasingly be true, as the resulting global system becomes ever more vulnerable to terrorism, war, and the vagaries of nature. From a lucid explanation of outsourcing’s true impact on American workers to an eye-opening analysis of the ideologies that shape free-market competition, Lynn charts a path between the extremes of left and right. He shows that globalization can be a great force for spreading prosperity and promoting peace—but only if we master its complexities and approach it in a way that protects and advances our national interest.

End of the Line by Barry C. Lynn is a delightful and interesting book about a very disturbing issue. I stumbled across this book while searching for a book with a similar name dealing with Amtrak. A critique of the global economy seemed interesting and slightly different from what I normally read.

Far from an unreasoned polemic, this book provided a fairly well reasoned and argued analysis of the weaknesses of the global supply chain. In a sense, America got a taste of these weaknesses with the disruption caused by hurricane Katrina in the fall of 2005. However, the potential shortfalls are not just limited to the handful of so-called super-ports that process the bulk of America's imports and exports. The extremely small numbers of companies that still make micro chips combined with their location in Taiwan make this a risky organization if China becomes bellicose or if Taiwan decides to be adversarial towards the United States for an extended period. These are a few examples, but the point that there is very little redundancy in a supply chain that has been made extremely lean to reduce costs. Moreover, it has created a situation where large multi-nationals bully suppliers without understanding anything about mass production. For example, does anyone really believe that Wal-Mart knows anything about the Chinese companies that make their products?

To this humble reader, we are in a very abnormal period of history where transportation costs are so low that it is extremely inexpensive to transport manufactured goods around the world. It seems likely that rising energy costs, increasing computer power and nano-technology will all combine to reverse that trend and potentially turn an individual into a thousand different factories. However, that is not the world we live in now. Mr. Lynn's analysis seems more right than wrong.

If you are interested in a well argued thesis demonstrating weaknesses in the current international business model, this is an excellent read.

I found this an interesting, albeit Jingoistic, account of the sharp increase in the corporate "single points of failure" and critical dependencies. It is worth reading if for no other reason than to get a better feel for how tenuous and time-critical our 1st world supply lines are. We have a more efficient economy these days. It is also far more brittle.

I found the latter half of the book more interesting, especially the author's recommendations. They are worth serious consideration. Sadly, however, I suspect that companies won't pay any attention to them until after a crisis.

The flip side of "The World is Flat". While US Companies are sending jobs overseas to "Cubicle Coolies" in Third World Countries for a short term return to investors and the CEO's yacht funding, American workers suffer. In the long term US companies must rely on the good will of Pakistan not to nuke their call centers in India over the Kashmir.

Lynn's book is a good look at the mindset of International Corporations who like the media today do not look at themselves as American but as World citizens. To save a little money American corporations since NAFTA have started moving jobs overseas. To justify this they are claiming they are fighting terrorism by increasing the standard of living in the third world. A $300 a month tech in India may be as good as his american counterpart in the US making $4000 but a GI Joe with Kung Fu grip costs as much in Hylalabad as it does in LA. Their standard of living isn't going to rise too much.

Lynn argues that Globalization rather than decreasing our vulnerability to terrorists is actually increasing it as means of production are moved closer to hot spot areas and Companies are dependant on third world despots (and probably the US military) to protect their interests.

He relates how both parties in the US are in bed together on the issue of globalization. He relates that the free trade positions of both Bush Administrations and that of Bill Clinton were almost in lock step. It makes one wonder if there is a politicl solution out there.

The book is very scary and I would reccomend it to those who need a reply to some of the rah rah Pro Globalization books out there.

5 out of 5 stars Global Diversification Re-examined.......2006-02-20

On September 21, 1999 an earthquake that registered 7.6 rocked Taiwan. Despite the death toll of 2,400, the quake barely registered in the consciousness of most Americans.

Watching the news would lead even the most cosmopolitan American observer to conclude that people in this country were more interested in North Carolina. Hurricane Floyd dropped more than 28 inches of rain there the week before.

Yet the shock wave from the quake was felt within days. Xilinx, a highly-specialized American semiconductor designer and manufacturer, lost two of its factories that day in Taiwan. Soon, thousands of assembly-line workers located from California to Texas, were furlogued.

The chain reaction did not stop there. Wall Street traders began to place the Taiwanese natural disaster in its proper prospective. Shares of Dell, Apple and Hewlett-Packard began to tumble.

By Christmas, American shoppers were scurrying to avoid the shortages of laptop computers, Barbie cash registers and Furby dolls.

In short a disaster that only 10 years prior would have been a localized disaster, cascaded into a worldwide crisis. The Taiwanese earthquake had elevated itself into a symbol of how closely connected the world has become. Perhaps, more important, Barry Lynn, a fellow at the New American Foundation in Washington, D. C. illustrates how that out-sourced world faces different risks.

Lynn argues today's worldwide economy is an improvisation that creates and distributes wealth in ways beyond the control of its designers.

In this well-written and well-researched monograph is an at times angry look at globalization. It offers a departure from the now familiar argument that interconnected, worldwide capitalism is good. In its place, the author offers a subtle and often scary look at a risk-laden system beyond any government's control.

Lynn's arguments promise to add clarity to this nation's growing global debate.

                                2 out of 5 stars Overly Pessimistic.......2006-02-11

Barry Lynn's central argument in this book is that today's large firms, in the name of short term profits, have outsourced labor and components to foreigners to the point where a natural disaster, strike, or other disruption in that part of the world where the outsourced provider resides can cause a total breakdown of the industry and the economy at large. He makes mitigating suggestions such as limiting market share for individual firms and full disclosure of the risks in the firm's financial reports.

If you are are skeptical of pure market forces, you will enjoy this book. If you find any validity to market economics however, you will find this book very pessimistic.

Whether outsourcing is good or bad depends on who you ask and when you ask. Economists say that it is bad for domestic employment in the short term, but good for profits, good for the consumer and good for international cooperation. A few people loose their jobs, but many more get the goods they want at a price they can afford. The question is not whether Americans loosing work due to outsourcing is a bad thing. The question is when will market forces bring the jobs back.

He provides a few examples of firms that have suffered from a disruption to their outsoured provider, but he doesn't tell us how the rest of us are collectively worse off from a particular firm's misfortune. Despite the risks, we are all still getting all the goods and services that we need, and usually at a lower price. Firms are all about risk minimization, which is why they outsource in the first place. They can't face the risk of higher costs and lost market share. When it seizes to be cost effective, the practice will discontinue. If there are not enough workers earning wages domestically, the firm can not sell enough of its goods. There is a built in market mechanism that will eventually bring the jobs back home. This should provide some solace to the reader.

                                  Book Description

This book is a comprehensive survey of the current research in the field of cataclysmic variables and low-mass X-ray binaries. These compact binaries contain a Roche-lobe filling low-mass star and an accreting white dwarf, neutron star, or black hole. In the turbulent process of accretion, a broad and highly variable spectrum of radiation is produced. The interpretation of the behaviour of these binaries is the present work of hundreds of astronomers, many of whom contributed to this volume. Among the topics covered here are observations and theories of low-mass neutron star and black hole binaries, magnetic and non-magnetic white dwarf binaries, transient X-ray sources, novae, and binary pulsars, as well as theories of the evolution of these binaries. The book is based on material presented at the 11th North American Workshop on Cataclysmic Variables and Low Mass X-ray Binaries held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in October 1989. Each contribution contains sufficient in-depth information to be of use to the specialist, while the breadth of subjects covered will ensure a wide audience among advanced undergraduates and graduate students.

                                    Book Description

Research on the formation, structure and evolution of binary stars with at least one compact component (i.e. a white dwarf, neutron star, or black hole), has in recent years been one of the most active areas in astrophysics. This volume gives an overview of recent progress in this area, with particular emphasis on the evolutionary connection that may exist between these binaries as observed in a variety of wavelength bands, in particular in the radio and X-ray bands. Among the subjects covered are Type Ib/c supernovae and supernovae in binaries; common-envelope evolution, coalescence of binaries and Thorne-Zytkow objects; gravitational waves from compact bodies; binary and millisecond radio pulsars; planets around pulsars; the pulsar velocity distribution; transient X-ray sources and black-hole binaries; quasi-periodic oscillations in X-ray sources; supersoft X-ray sources and their possible connection with Type I supernovae; soft gamma-ray repeaters; gamma-ray bursts and binary neutron star mergers.

Information published in these Proceedings books will be useful for researcher working in Astronomy and Astrophysics, mainly in the field of observational and theoretical studies of compact objects (such as super-massive and stellar mass black holes, highly and weakly magnetized neutron stars, and white dwarfs, isolated or in binary systems, Galactic or extra-galactic) and their progenitors or end points (such as Supernovae and Gamma-ray Bursts).

All papers have been peer-reviewed. These two Proceedings books contain the scientific discussions that more than one hundred scientists from all over the world have had during a two-weeks conference held in Cefalù (in the beautiful island of Sicily, Italy) from 11 to 24 June 2006. Oral contributions and posters were presented at the conference dealing with the astrophysics of compact objects, such as super-massive and stellar mass black holes, highly and weakly magnetized neutron stars, and white dwarfs, both isolated and in binary systems, and of their progenitors or end-points, such as Supernovae and Gamma Ray Bursts. In particular the meeting (and the following Proceedings books) are focused on several scientific areas that are briefly described in the following.

The first volume starts with the discussion of the so-called GAMMA RAY BURSTS (GRBs), which are among the most violent explosions in the Universe, most probably related to the final stages of the life of a massive star and the formation of a black hole, or to the coalescence of two neutron stars in a close binary system. In particular we discuss the globalproperties of long and short GRBs and of their Afterglows, the relation between GRBs and Cosmology, the connection to particular types of Supernovae, as well as present and future instrumentation. Then we discuss the so-called MAGNETAR CANDIDATES, which are neutron stars with very large magnetic fields (above 10^13 Gauss) showing coherent X-ray pulsations. These are usually observed as Anomalous X-ray Pulsars or Soft Gamma Repeaters. This last class of objects show sometimes very powerful soft gamma-ray outbursts from which a connection to the GRBs phenomenon has been proposed. The first volume ends with the discussion of the properties of SUPERNOVAE, which are connected tothe GRBs and are often the progenitors of collapsed objects.

In the second volume of the Proceedings we discuss the properties of PULSARS and millisecond pulsars. In particular, an update of the recently discovered double neutron star system is presented, were it is shown that with this system the theory of General Relativity has been tested with a precision of 0.05%, becoming the most precise physical theory to date. The discussion continues with the observational and theoretical properties of INTERACTING BINARIES containing white dwarfs, neutron stars or black hole candidates.
