    Book Description

The entry of the United State’s premier jet interceptor into the Korean War was triggered by the ever-increasing presence of the Soviet-built MiG-15 south of the Yalu River. The possibility of the USAF losing air supremacy over the Korean Peninsula was unacceptable. The 4th Fighter Wing got the call for combat in Korea. They were made up of a combination of new pilots right out of jet training and the older combat veterans of World War II vintage. This combination of pilot types wrote and re-wrote the text books on jet warfare. Of the 40 jet aces that the war produced, the 4th Wing boasted 24 of them. They also were the dominating MiG killer outfit with the USAF.

    4 out of 5 stars F-86 Sabre.......2007-01-05

The only thing missing in the text its that it should include more about the Sabre technical side and a little bit more about the Sabre - Mig comparison. In my opinion one of the most important thing missing (and it is a case with a number of Osprey books) its that there is no charts showing the regions over which the battles were fought or where the actions were taken. Also, there is a lot of talking about pilots "going from this squadron to that squadron etc."-this is a completely irrelevant information. In any case I think that the book is good and Osprey needs just a little bit to be perfect.

    5 out of 5 stars Top-Scoring F-86 Pilots in MiG Alley Action!.......2006-09-20

Hard on the heels of his recent history of the 51st FW, noted Korean War historian Warren Thompson serves up the exploits of the top-scoring 4th FW in this nicely done Osprey 'Aircraft of the Aces' series.

As with previous Osprey titles by Thompson, the reader is presented with many first-person narratives from pilots who flew the Sabre in MiG Alley including acCounts from well-known aces like Lonnie Moore, George Jones, Cliff Jolley and 'Hoot' Gibson. Not every F-86 pilot made ace and it's interesting reading the stories told by the 'wingy's.'

As always, there's tons of photos including many in color and 14 pages of color side-views and some nifty nose art.

    A nice, well-deserved tribute to the top-scoring 4th FW!

Wouldn't it be great if Osprey has a 'MiG-15 Aces of the Korean War' in the works!?!

    Book Description

Combining hardware and personnel, design and operations, a former U.S. Air Force pilot and aviation historian focuses on the one clear American victory of the Korean War, the jet fighter battle between the F-86 and the MiG-15. Kenneth P. Werrell explains how, despite being outnumbered, the USAF won air superiority in Korea with an aircraft that was initially inferior to its opponent. His book examines the Sabre's design and development, its combat service, and efforts to improve its performance. In addition to describing the difficulties encountered with the aircraft, he details the problems with rules of engagement, friendly fire, and personnel. He shows how numerous Air Force pilots, including almost all the aces, abetted by their leaders, violated restrictions and engaged and destroyed MiGs over China.

Werrell is first to take such an indepth look at the F-86, its pilots and operations, in this the first jet versus jet war. One of the few bright spots in the "forgotten war," it is the story of how an outnumbered force, flying an aircraft at the limits of its range, decisively defeated its foe. The author attributes the undisputed aerial victory—the U.S. claimed an eight-to-one air-to-air victory-to-loss ratio—to the skill and aggressiveness of the American pilots, a mixture of World War II veterans and recently trained young men. The winning and retention of air superiority gave UN forces a critical edge in the war, allowing them to fight without fear of air attack while the communists were battered by air power. The study is based on the latest scholarship, including a number of previously untapped sources, and interviews with Sabre pilots.

4 out of 5 stars Not really slashing Sabres, but highly interesting!.......2006-11-06

Sabres Over MiG Alley by Dr. Kenneth P. Werrell tells the story of the F-86 Sabre against the MiG-15 in the skys over North Korea. However rather than focusing on the men and the combats from unit histories, Mr. Werrell approached this from a slightly different approach; first focusing on the technical development of the Sabre and it's technical comparison to the MiG-15, then focusing on the men in general, finally focusing on the specifics of individual pilots. By looking at the air war this way we get a good feeling for how well the two combatants compared (especially the part where Dr. Werrell tells us about flying the captured MiG-15) with some descriptions of how the individual pilots flew. In going over the non-combat aspects, Dr. Werrell has sections that focus on such things as; Efforts to Improve Performance; Maintenance: Unappreciated but Vital; F-86 Flying Safety; and Friendly Islands and Rescue Service. Btw, in addition to a pretty nice section on individual pilots, there's several small sections on the general air war over Korea. Supporting content wise there are some excellent pictures but no technical drawings or maps showing where the airbases were or where the battle occurred.

Given this, how do I rate this book... a more complex answer than one might expect. Technically it's a 5 star book. Dr. Werrell does an outstanding job telling about the development and evolution of the Sabre. The stories of the individual pilots is worthy of 4-4.5 stars, but the general air war over Korea is rather weak and only worthy of 2.5 stars. Given all of this and my personal focus's I can only give this book 4 Stars. I really wanted to give it more than that because of the development history of the Sabre, but I was looking to get more about how the Sabre was used, how engagements developed between Sabres and MiG's and maybe something more on the use of Eastern Block aviators.

5 out of 5 stars The Definite Account of the First Jet vs. Jet War.......2005-07-19

The Korean War began with the Americans sending P-51 and P-80 fighters to support the B-29 bombers. It was a surprise to find that they were being met with MIG-15's. The not-quite-ready F-86 was rushed over to meet the challenge, and meet it it did.

Overall the American pilots achieved a 8 to 1 kill ratio. (Subsequent information from the Soviet Union says that up against the few Russian pilots that were volunteers to the North Korean Air Force held the Americans to about a one to one ratio.) The plane was obviously a great improvement over what went before, and the training of the pilots significantly better.

This book is the story of the F-86's that flew in Korea. It is probably going to remain as the definitive book on the subject. The book depends a lot on conversations with men who flew the planes, and as this was now over fifty years ago, the number of remaining pilots is rapidly declining.

This book is the complete history of the Sabers, including the down sides such points as inadequate armaments (six .50 calibers) and friendly fire. It of course also includes the good side, with the story of all the Aces that came out of the war.

    Book Description

The 51st Fighter Wing initially flew the F-80C in the Korean War, but in 1951, the 51st brought in high-scoring World War 2 ace Colonel Francis Gabreski to assume command when it converted from the F-80 over to the newly arrived F-86E. His recruits included his elite 4th Wing pilots, and by the end of the war, the 51st had two pilots who achieved the status of "Double Ace" as well as the highest scoring ace of the war, Joe McConnell. This book describes the 51st Wing's tenure with the Sabre that led to their high scoring sprees of 1953.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting Tales of F-86 MiG Killers in Action!.......2006-06-15

Warren Thompson can lay claim to being THE historian of the Korean air war. In the last 15 years he has written many fine, well-researched and well-illustrated books on various aspects of that long-ago war for Osprey, Specialty Press, etc. along with articles for 'Airpower,' 'Flight Journal' and other mags.

In this Osprey 'Aircraft of the Aces' book he chronicles the combat exploits of the 51st FW from late 1951 to war's end. The 51st was 'Brand X,' the second F-86 wing to go into combat but its pilots were second-to-none in killing MiGs. Wing aces included 'Gabby' Gabreski, the unit's first CO, Bill Whisner, Cecil Foster, Hal Fischer and top ace Joe McConnell. Thompson does a marvelous job of charting the wing's combats, including many first-person narratives from the MiG killers themselves that put the reader right in the cockpit.

Visually the book is a delight with many color photos and 14 pages of color profiles including 3 pages of nose art close-ups by Mark Styling. Very nicely done!

All in all, it's a fine tribute to the fighter jocks of the 51st FW well worth the $20.95 price tag.

4 out of 5 stars Great information, weak on color pics and paper quality........2000-07-31

I am a confessed Sabre nut, and have had a love affair with the F-86 since I was a kid growing up in the '50s. I was pleasantly surprised at the detail in this book.

In the limited space available in 100 pages, WT relates the development of the day fighter versions of the airplane (The XP-86, F-86, A, E, F and H models. The interceptor versions are not covered) from its beginnings as a "jet powered P-51", a straight wing relative to the Navy's FJ-1, to the end of its service life with the Air Guard. WT does a terrific job of describing the evolution of the airplane, including an excellent review of the "6-3" wing conversion on the "F" model.

The book contains lotsa interesting details along with some neat "gee whiz" info, including pilot and maintenance manual drawings and photos that are interesting, but often not fully explained, and sometimes these diagrams leave as many questions as they provide explanations.

Disappointing in the Warbird Tech editions I have purchased is the paucity of color photos (in this edition, only four pages with 11 small pics, only two of which are USAF Korean war era airplanes)... and the choice of an off-white, coarse grained paper for the rest of the book, which causes the numerous b & w photos and drawings to die on the page. I think WT is grossly inferior to other publications in this area, and the paper choice is difficult to understand with [the] price tag.

The bottom line for this publication is that the information is very interesting and if you can get past the crummy paper selection and lack of color photos, you'll be pleased.

          Book Description

The 4th Fighter Interceptor Wing (FIW) was sent to Korea in December 1950 expressly to deal with the threat posed by the all-new MiG-15 fighter that had made its combat debut the previous month. It remained the sole Sabre wing in-theatre for a full year, its pilots tangling with Russian-flown MiGs up over the Yalu River on a near-daily basis. Through sheer skill and superior machinery, the 4th FIW prevailed, and the skies over North Korean remained firmly in UN control. This book includes numerous photos of aces and their aircraft, as well as extensive first-hand accounts.

The F-86 Sabre was the most widely produced post-war swept wing fighter. Aviation historian and Sabre researcher Duncan Curtis tells the full story of the design, development and operational use of both the F-86 and its close relative the Navy's FJ Fury. Curtis chronicles the aircraft's many variants and its worldwide use by countries from Great Britain to Australia. Fully illustrated with many rare photos.

          4 out of 5 stars Well blended Sabre/Fury History.......2002-02-04

This book presents an outstanding history of the Sabre/Fury family of airplanes, with techical, historical and operational information blended well into a complete history. To be fully complete, however, I would add drawings or pictures of the original straight wing prototype (rare, but they do exist)... My only other comment is that I would like to see a larger color photo section for the price of the book.

          5 out of 5 stars Sabres Forever.......2000-11-15

In 1963 Ray Wagner published "The North American Sabre," (Doubleday) and not since then has anyone come even close to telling the definitive story of the F-86 Sabre until Duncan Curtis' effort. Wagner's book is long out of print, (Shame on Doubleday, it's their loss). So, if anyone wants to know about the Sabre, Curtis's book is the one to add to their library. I doubt, quite seriously, that anyone, ever, will be able to top the amount of research and effort and knowledge of the F-86 varients that has been recorded in this book. Way to go, Duncan!

5 out of 5 stars A new Sabre book arrives!.......2000-10-23

The F-86 Sabre....To aircraft lovers and historians, a NEW Sabre book has arrived and was well worth the wait!! Author Duncan Curtis has done his homework and has produced a superlative product! He has done a good balance of the Sabre history in the pages written. He has, for perhaps some readers, turned up new information and this makes for good reading. The photo content is excellent. The only minor problem is that the printer should have done more color for the price and Mike Fox's artwork should have been in color on pages 188/189. This book is a definite "get one" for your library.

Revised and updated second editionContinuously at the top of New Society Publishers' best-seller list for five years, Uprooting Racism has sold over 25,000 copies since its first printing. Substantially revised and expanded, the new edition has more tools to help white people understand and stand-up to racism. Uprooting Racism explores the manifestations of racism in politics, work, community, and family life. It moves beyond the definition and unlearning of racism to address the many areas of privilege for white people and suggests ways for individuals and groups to challenge the structures of racism. Uprooting Racism's welcoming style helps readers look at how we learn racism, what effects it has on our lives, its costs and benefits to white people, and what we can do about it.In addition to updating existing chapters, the new edition of Uprooting Racism explores how entrenched racism has been revealed in the new economy, the 2000 electoral debacle, rising anti-Arab prejudice, and health care policy. Special features include exercises, questions, and suggestions to engage, challenge assumptions, and motivate the reader towards social action. The new edition includes an index and an updated bibliography.

1 out of 5 stars More stupid white guilt.......2005-12-07

I was once very active in "antiracist" action. It took me a while to realize antiracist basically means antiwhite, because you only hear one side of the story: Whites are bad and have caused everyone pain.

If you want to make a stand against racism, you should be able to take a stand against ALL racism in ALL its forms. There is racism happening right now in the world between nonwhite groups who are just as bad, if not worse, as anything seen in America.

To the self-hating white guy who said that "white people who live in all white communities live in a bubble". Wouldn't that apply to Latinos who live in barrios and blacks who live in all-black communities? Or does that not meet the standard of Political Correctness?

"I'm sorry for something that I didn't do
you said I lynched somebody but I don't know who
              GUILTY OF BEING WHITE!"

              1 out of 5 stars Counter productive.......2004-11-27

This book is an excellant example of Liberal thought taken to the level of complete nonsense. Filled with statements such as "It is difficult for any white American not to have an immediate feeling of fear in the presence of an African-American male."(pg 68) and "We expect men of color to be dangerous." (pg 69) and in the context of challenging racism we might see in other whites, "How can we challenge other whites when we may need them in case of attack?"[by a balck male](pg 68) and "...we are more easily deceived by white leaders who have an aura of trustwothiness simply because they are white." (pg 71). These are just a very small sampling of the silly statements that are evident on each page. In an obvious attempt to conjur deep feelings of guilt, the book rehashes all of the horrible things that whites have done to people of color. This is always, ALWAYS!, counter productive. Many of the solutions that he offers will never be taken seriously by Moderate-Liberal to Conservative persons. And that is the real problem with this book-unless you are a far Left individual already predisposed to believing the largely unsubstantiated opinions he offers you will more than likely dismiss everything he says and throw the baby out with the bathwater. Racism does exist. This book offers very little to uproot it.

3 out of 5 stars What about black racism?.......2003-09-21

I'd like books out there to discuss the dangers of anti-white predjucie. I'd like books out there that show it is just as racist to stereotype whites as it is to stereotype blacks or jews. As for the 'white power' reviewer-he is obviously a racist, a self hating white person. As well, calling Hispanics a 'race' is nonsense. There are hispanics who are white, and there are hispanics who are black. There are Italians who are white, and there are Italians who are black.

This typical 'white men are all racist' book reminds me of a quote from the movie, Lean on Me. Morgan Freeman is standing in front of a group of inner city kids, to which he says, "If you do not suceed in life, I don't want you to blame the white man. I don't want you to blame your parents. I want you to blame yourselves. The responsibility is yours." That line alone should already mean something for all of us.

              5 out of 5 stars A New Edition--Great!.......2002-05-29

When I began reading the previous edition a few years ago, I realized that I wanted to discuss it with other white people as I worked through the exercises.

As a result five women in leadership roles in their church congregations discussed this book over lunches over some months. It took as many lunches as there are chapters. We learned much about ourselves as white women and much about the history of racism in the United States.

I continue to look for ways to share the impact of this book with others. I am pleased that there is a new edition and look forward to seeing what has made this very useful book even better.

4 out of 5 stars In Response to Reader from U.S.A. : Dangerous.......2001-05-25

The reader who wrote that the book was dangerous obviously has a problem accepting reality. After reading the book for myself and seeing what they wrote, I wonder if he/she is racist. If they accept that racism is prevalent in this country... who are the racist and who is being plagued by the racism? Whoever is suffering from the plague ( minorities ) the other race who is spreading it needs to step in and stop it:The notion that is asserted in the book. A doctor with Ebola cannot save a patient with Ebola. I have a hard time understanding why the reader thinks that each race should isolate themself from others and lend no assistance.

              Book Description

To identify all the air-breathing offshore wildlife potentially encountered on birding, whale-watching, or sport fishing trips at sea, you could take along a stack of field guides—or this one comprehensive guide to all the birds, whales, dolphins, seals, and sea turtles of the Northern Atlantic. Written by a recognized authority on seabirds and whales and illustrated with his finely detailed color paintings, it provides both previously unknown and common field marks to help you identify and enjoy all the offshore wildlife in the Atlantic Ocean north of the Tropic of Cancer, as well as in the Gulf of Mexico, the North Sea, and the Bay of Biscay.

Michael Tove offers a general introduction to each group of animals, followed by concise accounts of every species found in the Northern Atlantic. He particularly highlights previously undescribed field marks and behavioral patterns that make identification at sea much easier than before. He also includes range/abundance graphs for twelve locations in North America and six in Britain and Europe to help you plan where and when to view particular species. To enhance your day(s) at sea, Tove includes tips on how to dress properly and avoid seasickness and sunburn.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Comprehensive Guidebook for Pelagic Buffs.......2001-03-17

As an enthusiastic birder and observer of nature, I have found that some of my most memorable moments occur during pelagic (i.e. on the open ocean, away from land) trips. There are many creatures out there that one could spend a lifetime without ever seeing from shore. Until now, if you wanted to try identifying the wildlife you might encounter at sea, you needed a stack of guidebooks - one for mammals, one for birds, one for turtles etc.

Michael Tove's terrific guide has just made things a lot simpler.

Mr. Tove is a well known North Carolina birder, naturalist and organizer of Gulf Stream pelagic trips who has had articles published in various journals on identification of pelagic creatures, including birds and whales.

His guidebook is very comprehensive and well organized. It covers both sides of the North Atlantic, from Greenland to the Caribbean on the west side and Iceland to North Africa on the East.

The wildlife covered includes all the air-breathing vertebrates one might encounter anywhere in the territory covered.

There are separate sections on pelagic birds, whales and dolphins, seals and sea turtles. For each species, there is at least one illustration, excellently done by Mr. Tove, along with information on measurements, identification, behavior, range, distribution and preferred habitat.

Where appropriate, species names from both sides of the Atlantic are given, as with "Dovekie" - North America, "Little Auk" - Europe.

For birds, there are illustrations of different plumages and ages, for whales and dolphins, there are diagrams of surfacing and blow patterns and for every species covered, notes on how to distinguish that species from others with which it might be confused.

There is data on a number of popular pelagic destinations e.g. the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Hudson Canyon off New York harbor, North Carolina's Outer Banks, Scotland's Outer Hebrides plus a half-dozen oceanic islands - The Dry Tortugas, Canary Islands etc. The data sets consist of monthly abundance charts for each species that is reasonably regular at that particular location.

In addition, there is information on oceanic ecology, regions and currents. He also includes tips on how to dress for a trip and how to avoid or cope with seasickness.

There is even a section on how to plan your own pelagic trip, and how to factor in such variables as wind, weather and surface conditions.

There is something in this book for current or would-be pelagic enthusiasts of all levels of experience from novices to "old salts."

              I recommend it highly.

                    Description:
Bis(4-chlorophenyl) sulfone (BCPS) is a high production volume chemical (HPVC) applied in thermostable polymers. BCPS has been detected as an environmental contaminant both in Europe and in North America but it is still not a commonly studied pollutant. In this study, three Baltic Sea fish species; herring (Clupea harengus), salmon (Salmo salar) and perch (Perca fluviatilis) from the Swedish coast, and one inland fish species, arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), were analysed to screen for the occurrence and distribution of BCPS. Salmon and arctic char, were sampled in the early 1970s as well as the late 1990s. Fish eating grey seal (Halichoerus gryphus) and guillemot (Uria aalge) from the Baltic Sea were included to screen for whether BCPS biomagnify or not. The representativeness of the analysed samples for studying bioaccumulation of environmental pollutants was compared through analysis of two well known persistent and bioaccumulating compounds, 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl (CB-153), and 4,4'-DDE. Pooled muscle and blubber samples based on 4-10 individuals were used for analysis, as well as individual samples of grey seal blubber. 2,4,4'-Trichlorodiphenyl sulfone, was synthesised and applied as an internal standard. BCPS was detected in all marine samples but in only one of the fresh water fish samples. The highest BCPS concentrations detected, 1600 and 1900 ng/g lipid weighet (l.w.), were found in muscle from Baltic guillemot. The results indicate that BCPS is bioaccumulated in both grey seal and guillemot, and that the guillemot has higher concentrations of BCPS than the grey seal (50-500 ng/g l.w.). The concentrations found in different species of fish from the Baltic Sea ranged between 15-37 ng/g l.w. and lower concentrations were found in freshwater species (n.d.-1.8 ng/g l.w.). The present study shows that BCPS is found in all investigated species of wildlife but, in most species, still at low concentrations. However, the guillemot has levels in the low ppm range indicating a considerable biomagnification of BCPS in this species.
