5 out of 5 stars Darling and sweet.......2007-06-20

Every book in this series is so adorable. Each one tugs at your heart and captures a true emotion.

Priceless.

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming.......2007-03-20

Could not put it down. The inherent wisdom in this book amazed me. I bought several copies and gave them to all of my siblings. This book is a true treasure.

3 out of 5 stars Good inspiration for writing mom a thank you note.......2007-03-15

This narrative is full of black and white photographs of animals, most of which are young. The writing is on the generic side for gift books as Greive recounts broad experiences typically shared between mothers and their children not clearly showing what "everything" is. The tone of the writing feels akin to a letter that has been broken up to a sentence or phrase per picture/page, though the enjambment is well distributed offering a poetic feel to each passage. Overall this makes a fine book as a thank you gift but shouldn't be a substitute for a sincere, heartfelt note thanking a mother for her lifelong commitment of love and defining what "everything" really is. In fact, the text is a strong source of inspiration for writing this kind of mother thank you note.

2 out of 5 stars nice, but not very fitting.......2007-01-11

While the pictures were kind of cute and the message endearing, there were many parts of it that did not really realte to my relationship with my mother. Some parts are too specific to the author's relationship with his mother so that it may not make sense if you were to give it to your mother.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Animal Photography.......2006-12-14

Any of Greive's books are good for gifts. His photographs really match the literature beneath each photo and will make one feel more human again and able to recall what's really important in life.

5 out of 5 stars Books, not Movie........2005-10-21

The books are wonderful, but if you think that the books are gonig to be like any other version of The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy, you are dead wrong. If you read the introduction to the books you know that each version is meant to be different than the others. That is the beauty of Douglas Adams work. They are all unique but all worth you time.

    5 out of 5 stars your guide.......2005-10-13

Okay, for those of you who haven't read the book yet but did watch the movie you guys missed out on a lot the movie didn't include all the scenes that I personally though was very well.
Now that that's out of the way. Douglas Adams in his one of his possibly best know books really out did himself. In this adventure a boring simpleton named Arthur Dent living on the planet we call earth has befriended a guy named Ford Perfect, who is not as he claimed from earth but from a planet called Betelgeuse. Where he was sent from to do research for "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe" (it's a book where it has everything and anything that you could possibly need to know about the universe). Ford tells Arthur that he isn't from around here. He isn't from Earth. In telling Arthur this he also tells him that the earth is about to end.
And since they have gotten to be really close friends he takes Arthur with him when he hitches a ride with the Vogan ships (these are what the aliens are called that destroyed our planet earth). Vogan's in particular don't like hitchhikers very much. So they kick them off the ship, shortly after they get on. And by pure chance they get picked up. And the story goes from there.
Now that I've told you how the book starts I'll leave it up to you to read the rest of the book. And if you read this book, then watch the movie. You'll see that the movie is hardly based on this incredible book .

4 out of 5 stars A thoughtful well documented book.......2003-08-15

I stumbled on this book while waiting for an appointment with a chiropractor. I was not particularly concerned about heart disease. What struck me initially was the careful research and quality of the writing of the author who is a medical writer, not a doctor . In addition, the opening of the book is very personal - as the author relates how he went from surviving his second coronrary bypass at the age of forty one to completely beating heart disease without abadoning steaks or other things he likes to eat.

He carefully puts together an analysis of how a good cholesterol-reducing diet can be followed and marshals the evidence - or lack thereof - as he discusses the claims and counter-claims made regarding various approaches and remedies. The section on the role of niacin in reducing cholesterol in especially good, although there now seems to be much more research on this topic. The references are very extensive and cover a lot of the medical literature on these topics.

I enjoyed the presentation enough to borrow the book from my chiropractor and finish it. Hopefully, this is a recommendation for you to consider it, if these topics interest you.

5 out of 5 stars Way ahead of the field.......2000-10-11

The book is very thorough and informative, and at least 5 to 7 years ahead of the doctors who prescribe lipid lowering drugs. The book pointed out the dangers of Homosystene and Lp(a) well before it was labeled the "really bad cholesterol", and getting Doctors to prescribe such tests was like pulling teath. And after all thats said and done, It seems Niacin (well supported in the book) is proving to be better than the statins that are currently touted...particularly since the statins can not effect Lp(a), whereas,Niacin is the only cure for Lp(a). As a result, we are only now hearing about combination therapy of Niacin and statins.

Growing up in a small Midwestern town in the 60s, Matt wants nothing more than to run cross-country, hang out with his friends, and act cool. When Matt’s father dies unexpectedly in a tragic car accident, his world is turned upside-down. Bitter over the loss of his father, Matt wants everyone to leave him alone, including God. When Wade, a stuttering, handicapped young man, moves in next door and insists on making Matt his best friend, Matt wants nothing to do with him. Teased by some of his friends at school, Matt struggles with choosing to be accepted rather than doing what’s right. Only when Matt is able to see the world through Wade’s eyes will he truly understand the meaning of grace and forgiveness.

        4 out of 5 stars Wonderful coming-of-age story.......2007-08-30

The winner of The Christian Writer's Guild Operation First Novel contest, begun in 2004, receives both a cash prize and a Tyndale publishing contract. Jan Watson's wonderful historical fiction novel, Troublesome Creek, was the first award winner, and Tyndale is now releasing the book by the 2005 recipient, In Everything Give Thanks by Terry Barnes.

In Everything Give Thanks is a touching and realistic coming-of-age story about fifteen-year-old Matt Collins, who finds his world and faith shaken by his father's unexpected death. Matt, almost overnight, goes from being a typical teenage boy with a passion for cross-country running and a desire to be a preacher, to a disillusioned grown-up who is now the man of the house. In his pain, Matt makes a deal with God--he'll leave God alone, if God will leave him alone.

When Wade Hampton, a teenage boy with cerebral palsy, moves in next door, he determines that Matt is his new best friend. But Matt wants nothing to do with Wade; hanging out with him only brings trouble, and Matt has enough trouble of his own to deal with. But Wade is persistent, and eventually Matt learns that Wade and God have a lot in common--neither one will leave him alone.

While I felt the many narrative passages slowed the story down more than necessary, this heartfelt novel shines, especially in the last few chapters. Matt's feeling of abandonment by God is one I'm sure many readers will understand. And I appreciated that Matt's struggle with faith did not have a quick resolution. Just as in real life, rarely are all of our questions answered. But Terry Barnes handles the emotions and questions of loss authentically, while leaving the reader, in the end, filled with hope

Armchair Interviews says: Look forward to reading more by this promising author

5 out of 5 stars A book that anyone who has ever been a teenager can relate too. .......2007-07-23

I love this book, I couldn't read it fast enough I was so anxious to see how it would end. Loved the open honest questions of Matt. I understood the pressures that Matt felt about Wade and Colby. I think most people who read this book will sit a remember how it was to be a teenager, the pressure between those we "thought" were our friends and our true friends. It was just a really good book. I hope this author continues to write. I felt like it was open and honest about people, grief and forgiveness.

5 out of 5 stars superb inspirational tale .......2007-07-08

Fifteen years old Matt Collins loved his dad Tommy, who was wounded at Iwo Jima where he found Jesus. His dad loved watching Matt run cross country and attending the Bethel Baptist Church service with his family. So Matt questions why God failed a man like his father, who loved the Lord deep in his soul; why allow a drunk to kill him in that horrible car accident. The grieving teen vows God will no longer be in his life.

Cerebral palsy sufferer Wade Hampton and his family move next door to Matt. Wade wants to become best friends with Matt, who wants nothing to do with the stuttering dork especially since the newcomer wants to become a preacher. As school bullies pick on Wade, Matt begins to wonder how his handicapped neighbor, who was dealt a bad hand by the Lord, can believe like his dad did so strongly in God.

Matt is the key to this superb inspirational tale as his first person account of how he feels seems raw and real especially when he questions God with the whys. Readers will hope he finds solace as his grief is hurting him. Wade is also a wonderful character who will have the audience marvel at the strength of his conviction in the Lord including overcoming his so called handicap. Terry Barnes provides a thought provoking tale that will lead fans to understand how much greatness we all have and thereby IN EVERYTHING GIVE THANKS.

Many who saw the 1990 Hollywood movie Memphis Belle think they know the story. But the real story had nothing to do with the movie-and it is told for the first time here, by the pilot who lived it. An emotionally moving tale, and a heartbreaking love story, this is an unforgettable memoir of a man who was born into a life of ease-and tested in the hardship of war.

"Bring[s] a new perspective to World War II literature. Written in a chatty style that is easy and exciting to read, this book is recommended." (Library Journal)

"A book that needed to be written while the best man to write it still could." (Booklist)

5 out of 5 stars A Complex Friend, Terrific Read.......2007-02-22

Bob Morgan was a friend of mine. His lovely wife urged him for years to write a book, yet he always seemed to sluff it off. At speaking engagements, he always pointed out that he was no hero, giving full credit to the other members of his crew, and the many other crews that flew the skies of Europe. Very typical of his generation, and traits that later ones seem to have lost. The crew of the Memphis Belle was thrust into fame by accident, circumstance, chance, or whatever fate chose, much like the flag raisers of Iwo Jima. It forever changed their lives to some extent. Bob almost waited too long to write this, and he couldn't have found a better co-author than award winning Ron Powers. Bob wasn't your average pilot in the air, there was this unruly side of him that was able to express itself somewhat before the bond tours, but certainly was turned loose afterwards. I remember once when he came by to see me and handed me a picture of him flying a B-17 at Oshkosh when he was well into his 70's. He'd run the plane down the runway in front of the crowd, then turned it on it's side, leaving the wing tip only slightly off the ground. Some things never changed. The book would be a great read just for his WWII and war bond experiences, but Bob was a unique individual, no actually a complex individual, and much to my surprise, he held nothing back in his book. Perhaps this is why he waited so late in life to do it, but I'm glad he did. This is probably the most honest and personal WWII memoir that you will ever read, and nothing was held back. The complexity and struggles of Bob as a man would have made this a fascinating book had he never sat at the controls of the Memphis Belle. But he did, and as a result, you get the unique insight into a very unique, and complex man, and this is the treat that you will come away with in this book, long after the story of the Memphis Belle.

2 out of 5 stars The Man who.......2006-04-23

All 8th Air Force veterans are heroes and special, few are self absorbed in their own life. This is a story that deserves to be told but the me, me, me gets in the way. Morgan loses his mother and spends the rest of his life trying to find her in a marriage. As far as the story, he still dodges the fact that Irl Baldwin and the 303rd Bomb Group B-17 `Hell's Angels' was the first to fly 25 missions in the European Theatre of Operations. Good book but would have been better without such a self centered perspective. Not everyone came back from the ETO, we will remember them.

5 out of 5 stars The life and times of the first American pilot in WWII to survive 25 missions over Europe.......2005-10-18

For those who may not know: In the early days of World War II the United States had no long range fighters capable of protecting our bombers all the way to their European targets. Even so, and unlike the British who flew only night bombing raids which were much safer but largely ineffective, the American fliers were tasked to continue flying higher precision yet much more dangerous daylight missions. As a consequence, the attrition rate for American bombers and their crews was grimly and almost unacceptably high. To bolster morale, a policy was initiated such that any bomber crewman completing twenty-five missions without being shot down and captured or killed would be relieved of duty and returned to the United States. The "Memphis Belle" was the first bomber to successfully achieve that milestone.

Having heard about the Memphis Belle for most of my life, I was curious to read the real story of that famed B-17 and its equally famous 25th mission, particularly from the standpoint of the bomber's pilot. I wasn't disappointed. In fact, the story went far beyond that bomber and its mission and was much more interesting. For through the eyes of the book's author you could almost sense what it was like to experience his life and times and know what it was REALLY like to actually pilot a B-17 into combat. . . Ignore the German fighters. Don't drift. Ignore the flack. Don't let your mind wander. Keep your eyes fixed straight ahead. Keep your plane in formation. Try to relax. Don't let your wings touch. Bomber pilots apparently had a very narrow view of the war.

The remarkable thing to me about the book, however, was that Robert Morgan wrote it quite late in his life. To me, that broadened his perspective, lending much more insight to the story. In fact, I don't think a young Captain Morgan could have written a book with such clarity, honesty, perspective and sensitivity. Bottom line: This is a very good book and not just from a historical point of view.

              5 out of 5 stars What a Life!.......2005-06-20

This is a grand story of a B-17 Flying Fortress in the 8th Air Corps early days bombing France and Germany in WW II. More than that, it is the autobiography of one of the most interesting men I have ever encountered. The MEMPHIS BELLE was one of the first planes and crews to complete 25 missions and come home to thank Americans for their home front efforts.

4 out of 5 stars Amazingly frank and personal autobiography.......2003-12-25

Leaving aside the question of historical accuracy (this has been touched on ably by another reviewer) except for one comment - I was a little unconvinced by Morgan's soliloquy's on WW II grand strategy, such as his explanations of how the war in Russia was fought, and other things that he as a 23-25 year old bomber pilot would have known little about and perhaps cared even less. These parts of the book come across as forced.

Having said that, however, I have no doubt Morgan felt them necessary to put the overall story into context, and they do that well. This makes the book perfect for youngsters or those with no understanding of the larger picture of WW II history, and thus provide this with a broader appeal.

But the meat of the story is Morgan himself. This is not "just" a story of a WW II bomber pilot, this is a wonderfully told story of Bob Morgan, the man, and a blushingly honest discussion of his many demons - his relationship with his departed mother, his father and siblings, his girlfriends, fiancees and wives, his crew (many of whom were fast friends), his superiors, and a terrific look at how he grew up, trained for war, matured as a commander, lived as a returning veteran, and overcame the evils of a pampered upbringing, and learned the value of hard work.

The details about his tour with the 8th Bomber Command were especially interesting, and his revelations about the WW II documentary about his aircraft will answer many questions for ardent Memphis Belle fans who always wondered how much of the 1943 documentary was real (apparently, not much), and also records what Morgan thought of the 1990 film with Matthew Modine (apparently, not much).

His tour in B-29s is also well discussed. This is very much a terrific human interest story which just happens to take place in flak-filled skies. It's certainly more Twelve O'Clock High, with its introspection, than it is Monte Merrick's Memphis Belle, with its cartoon heroics.

Colonel Morgan is to be commended for his bravery in baring his soul to the rest of us, for trying to make sense of his life in a way that we can all learn, for admitting to the hurt he has caused others, and allowing us to relate to his own hurts. He was a courageous man at 23 - he had to be - but now, of his own accord, I think he is even braver in his 80s for writing this thoroughly inspirational book.

              Book Description

El Paso/Juarez served as the tinderbox of the Mexican Revolution and the tumultuous years to follow. In essays and archival photographs, David Romo tells the surreal stories at the roots of the greatest Latin American revolution: The sainted beauty queen Teresita inspires revolutionary fervor and is rumored to have blessed the first rifles of the revolutionaries; anarchists publish newspapers and hatch plots against the hated Porfirio Diaz regime; Mexican outlaw Pancho Villa eats ice cream cones and rides his Indian motorcycle happily through downtown; El Paso's gringo mayor wears silk underwear because he is afraid of Mexican lice; John Reed contributes a never-before-published essay; young Mexican maids refuse to be deloused so they shut down the border and back down Pershing's men in the process; vegetarian and spiritualist Francisco Madero institutes the Mexican revolutionary junta in El Paso before crossing into Juarez to his ill-fated presidency and assassination; and bands play Verdi while firing squads go about their deadly business. Romo's work does what Mike Davis' City of Quartz did for Los Angeles-it presents a subversive and contrary vision of the sister cities during this crucial time for both countries.

David Dorado Romo, the son of Mexican immigrants, is an essayist, historian, musician and cultural activist. Ringside Seat to a Revolution is the result of his three-year exploration of archives detailing the cultural and political roots of the Mexican Revolution along la frontera. Romo received a degree in Judaic studies at Stanford University and has studied in Israel and Italy.

              1 out of 5 stars Self-indulgent ramblings.......2007-01-26

Nicely packaged and attractive speaks well for the publisher, but this book could have used a good editor. Author has written a very self-indulgent, rambling book filled with trivia, but often losing sight of the Mexican Revolution and Pancho Villa. More disappointing, most of the photos in the book have been published numerous times, which is surprising since the author claims to have examined photo archives all over the US! In fact, 70% of the photos in this book come from El Paso/Las Cruces sources--and some of them have nothing to do with the revolution--they were just interesting for the author, so he included them! I'm surprised the book was published in this form and written this way, but it will not sell well outside its target audience in El Paso.

              5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-11-10

This book is one of the few scholarly page-turners. It covers the topic in a local-history approach. The use of many, well-chosen photographs, keeps the readers interest. The author's "hook" of viewing the Mexican Revolution from a distance in El Paso is both novel, and effective.

A first rate book, with an excellent collection of photographs. See/listen to John Burnett's NPR radio materials on the David Dorado Romo book, aired Sat., Jan. 28, 2006. NPR web page: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5176177

              4 out of 5 stars A Pictoral and Micro-history.......2005-11-29

If you like micro-history, you'll enjoy this book. Rather than dealing with the big events of the day, Romo tells his stories with the details of the day.... details that, put together, make a much larger story. The book is a series of readable essays that are fascinating to those who have an interest in immigration, Pancho Villa, the border and the Mexican Revolution. The pictures alone are worth the price of the book! I recommend it to all students of American and Mexican history.
