Excellent Book, Good Price.......2007-08-16

I am preparing for my fourth (sigh) recertification in family practice.
I have practiced emergency medicine for the last 26 years so I don't keep up with some of the topics - for example, child nutrition. So I need a good review book.
The last time, I read Rakel's text, which is certainly thorough, but VERY long. This book is in question and answer format, and I find it excellent for studying. It has a nice atlas of rashes, X-rays, EKG's etc. like you will find on the boards. It also allows you to access an online website with more board preparation questions, which I haven't used yet, at no extra charge. The text is quite up to date (one of the questions I've come up on so far is about HIPPA regulations). I recommend this to anyone recertifying in family practice.

BRATTON'S Family Medicine Board Review.......2007-07-22

Very up-to-date. Very happy with how comprehensive it is containing all sections of family medicine plus practice tests and on-line review. Only thing I would do different is make sure in the explanation that every wrong answer is explained why it is wrong and not simply why the right answer is right. Keep up the good work!

Bratton's Family Practice Board Review.......2006-08-07

After taking the recert. exam, I found that Bratton's review helped more than the 40+ hour review "boot camp" that I attented. Question foremat was very similar to the board exam.

This is very helpful for last minute review. Obviously not up to date on the hottest topics, but overall very good on general topics. Excellent question and answer format. With older intraining exams, questions at familypractice.org, and this review, you'll breeze through the exam. Good luck!

Good review.......2005-07-31

Just took my FP board. I used this book for the quick review 2 weeks prior to exam and I think it did help me a lot. Would definitely recommend this book for the Board preparation.

An excellent resource for early interventionist's.......2003-03-08

This curriculum guide is excellent especially for first year special educators who are required to write family-friendly IFSP/IEP goals. It lays out goals for children, the previous skills they have to acquire to meet those goals, skills that will come next, concurrent skills, as well as how to set up your classroom to elicit the goals. WONDERFUL WONDERFUL! I would not recommend the companion measurement however because it is VERY time-consuming.

Excellent for FP rotations in med school.......2006-05-21

During my 3rd year of medical school there were few books designed for medical students on outpatient or family medicine. I used this book in combination with the blueprints books on medicine, peds, and obgyn. I also worked the NMS FP question book.

I found this book to be very good, and packed with relevant information. If you like the Recall series format, I highly recommend this book. By now, I am sure there are more choices for family medicine books. But for a easily transportable book with high yield facts in the usual question/answer format of the Recall series (that reads very quickly), this book is for you. Hopefully it will be updated periodically.

The NMS family medicine book was only moderately helpful, was slow and tedious to work through, and the questions did not reflect shelf exam style questions.

small convienience.......2000-03-27

The book is not only small and easy to carry, but packed with easy-to-find information perfect for any medical student doing their family practice rotation. I would recommend the series for all the other rotations also. The question-answer format helps outline key points for each subject. The only thing I didn't like about the series is that they are not spiral bound.

Everything you need to know about wasting paper and time........2001-12-30

I wanted to give this book ZERO stars, but there is no such rating.

Want to know what to expect BEFORE you go to the doctor to have a test done? This book will tell you in nauseating detail, over, and over again. It wastes page upon page repeating, word for word, what they do during a blood test.

If you want the OLD names for tests, this book uses them all. If you want to understand the results of your blood tests or any other tests, find another book.

If you want to know what those abbreviations mean in your test results, don't look here, they aren't there.

This book has NO information worth reading at all. I wasted my money and time buying and reading it.

Like its title states, this book tells you all you need to know about just about medical test. It's clear, straightforward, and filled with helpful information.

Book Description

The Family System Test (FAST), developed by Thomas M. Gehring, is an important new tool for investigating family relations. Based on the structural-systemic theory of families, it is a figural technique for representing emotional bonds (cohesion) and hierarchical structures in the family or similar social systems. In this unique volume, the editors draw on current theory and research in family or similar social systems together with a variety of empirical studies that have used the FAST, to provide a comprehensive overview and assessment of the test and its use in various clinical research contexts.
The book is divided into four sections, each focusing on a different aspect of the FAST. Part 1 describes the concepts and psychometric properties of the FAST within the context of theoretically and empirically relevant aspects of the field of family psychology as a whole. Special emphasis is given to systematic-structural approaches to assessing individual and family functioning. Part II focuses on the use of the FAST in developmental research. For example, the the FAST has been used to show how family constructs are influenced by age, type of family and situation. Part III deals with cross-cultural issues and compares the interpersonal constructs of Japanese and Chinese families to Western families. Finally, Part IV addresses the applications of the FAST in clinical setting - in diagnosis of biopsychosocial problems and planning and evaluation of clinical interventions.
The result is a book that helps to bridge the gap between theory, practice and research. It will be essential reading for users of the FAST and all clinicians and researchers who work in family relations and development.

Disorganized, Poorly Written, and of Questionable Integrity .......2007-08-15

In this day and age of partisan journalism it is imperative to examine any issue with not only a fine-tooth comb, but a magnifying glass as well. This is especially true for Zaki Chehab's Inside the Resistance: The Iraqi Insurgency and the Future of the Middle East. Although Chehab's courage to examine a difficult topic in one of the most dangerous places in the world is commendable, the reportage tends to be rather weak and often tremendously biased. He views the present situation in Iraq as black and white. Members of the resistance arefreedom fighters and the US troops are occupiers. This is fully within reason if one is writing a polemic, opinion piece, etc. but it does taint journalistic objectivity, and indeed, Chehab is marketing his work as real journalism. Furthermore, the evidence that the author provides is less than assuring. In tracking his sources through citations, many seem less than reputable, and clearly one-sided.

I was hoping to find a thought-provoking and enlightening work on the current bedlam that is Iraq; an in depth analysis of the current insurgency, i.e. players, motivations, etc., in order to understand the situation, but instead I found a disorganized, biased, and poorly written diatribe against the US. I commend the publisher, The Nation, for taking on a lot of controversial topics, and welcome their alternative views, however they must put out a more professional product if they hope to maintain any legitimacy.

Not enough data, but what's there is good.......2006-12-20

You would think a book called "Inside the Resistance" would be jammed packed with insurgent information. Unfortunatly, this book contains three chapters on the resistance, the rest of the book covers such topics as Abu Ghraib, Iraq's Political Neighbors and the Elections.

All great topics of note, but not what I was looking for. If I wanted to read about Abu Gharaib, then I would find a book called "Abu Gharaib".

Having said all that, the few chapters that did dwell on the resistance were informative, and well written. In fact, the whole book was decent.

If you're looking for a primer on Iraq, through Iraqi eyes, then this book may be a good starting place. If you're looking for key information on the Resistance, then you may find about 100 pages on the topic in this book.

flawed work with some interesting insights.......2006-08-18

The book will disappoint anyone looking for a detailed examination of the Iraqi insurgents. The author is a reporter who has bravely gone to dangerous places in Iraq and has returned with some fascinating stories. Unfortunately, these are snapshots and don't give a very coherent picture. The book as a whole is poorly organized, perhaps a rush job to stitch some short pieces of reportage into a larger whole. As an Arab, the author appears to have greater rapport with Iraqis than a typical Western journalist might have, but the book doesn't really get inside the heads of the Iraqis enough to make me feel like I understand what they are thinking.
Some big questions the book could have grappled with but did not:
What really happened in cases in Fallujah and elsewhere in which American forces apparently gunned down civilians in angry mobs, inflaming the population? Would a larger US force to prevent looting, as some in the book advocate, have led to more violence against civilians, further increasing resistance? Was the insurgency really fed by the indignities recounted in the book, or did some elements just seize on these events because they wanted to fight for other reasons? What role did religious and ethnic tensions play in creating the insurgency? Was there anything the US could have done to dampen the insurgency, such as handing Iraq over to the UN right after the invasion? Was and is there anyone to negotiate with in order to allow the US to exit an Iraq not mired in civil war?

Overall, a nice book that presents a picture not covered by the media..unfortunately. However, some of the material or viewpoints are subject to revision given the nature of constant changes occuring in the leadership of the insurgency.

A unique and fascinating book.......2006-04-23

The recent developments in Iraq , and the scale of killing which is taking place in this country convinced me more and more that the mistakes commited after libertaing this country from its dictator Saddam Hussein should have been avoided if we have relied on experts in the region affairs rather than ignorant advisors, as it was highlighted in this unique and fascinating book .
