Good introduction to Christian Virtue........2007-08-04
This books is a good introduction to the four cardinal virtues and the theological virtues. It uses the Catechism of the Catholic Church and personal experience to show how important developing virtues (habits for doing what is good with ease, promptness, and joy) to live a happy and successful life. The section on the theological virtues is good (supernatural habits which bring us into union with God). I highly recommend this book.

This is great on audiotape too. The most down to earth, sensible, practical book on the subject. A vital necessity to growing in common sense and wisdom. How does one exercise prudence? justice? charity? While every father needs this book or tape, every mom will benefit from reading and listening over dad's shoulders. It is a treasure chest that you will refer to often so don't hide it from yourself and consider this as a simple, yet significant way to improve your corner of the world: give copies to those you love and know. We've received abundant praises for this and when lending it out, found that it was lent out to another family and another. We ended up buying 2 copies due to the late return.

This is the must have book for coaching boys sports. You can take the virtues described in Tim's book and transform into team talks. There is a group that advocates this book and has done wonders with sporting teams. [...] and see how they use virtue talks to spark the faith.

As a book for our Men's Group the book is very helpful to teach us what virtues are to be about. The implemenation of the scripture and catechesis are powerful and I can't say enough good things about this small study book. Thank you and God Bless.
Real substance, good advice, scriptural inspiration..........2005-06-11
Gray writes, "Today it is more common to hear about values than virtues. Current thought is that society would be safe, healthy, and happy, if only we could instill proper values into people. Values-based moral education programs exemplify the modern conviction that morality is nothing other than the art of making good choices, where we are guided entirely by one's own values. One could critique this approach to morality on philosophical grounds, but my criticism is simple and to the point. The problem is that values fall short when it comes to making men moral. Having good values is a fine thing, but the battle of morality is not so much about *knowing* what is right as it is *doing* what is right. The difference between wanting to do the good and actually doing it is tremendous. Thus, many men who commit adultery know what they are doing is wrong (no need for clarification), but they are unfaitful despite their values."
From this starting point, Gray walks through the cardinal and theological virtues (with his typical scriptural focus), explaining how we must acquire, exercise, and grow each of them. He reviews the challenges, and offers advice on overcoming them. This is a nice alternative to the pop-psychology that passes as Christian self-help in the bookstores, and has the added benefit of being rather inspiring. Chapters are followed by group discussion questions. Highly Recommended. 119pp.

Brenda Nixon's well written parenting book is a real help to parents in quandary. If you are a new parent, rearing a toddler or preschool age child, want practical childcare tips, like short reads, feel inadequate about rearing a youngster today, want answers that help resolve problems, and.....if you are committed to learn to be a good parent then this book is for you.
The delightful chapters are written in short, succinct bits of information. Besides the wealth of parenting guidance in chapters, Brenda offers an age appropriate gift giving guide, charted stages of development and a resource index for specific need-to-know issues such as thumb sucking, tantrums, toilet training, and eating.
After reading it, I recognized being in the presence of a wise and caring woman, who longs to aid parents and children.
You can succeed at parenting with this "winning wealth" of information. Returns will be greater than money in the bank. A great gift for new parents.

Brenda Nixon draws on her experiences as an educator and mom to provide parents with helpful advice on a variety of topics. As a busy mother of a toddler and an eight year-old, I want answers but don't have the time to search everywhere for them. Parenting Power in the Early Years gave me thoughtful advice on many of the situations that concern me, and I appreciated the fact that it was an easy read. It was personal, practical, and powerful.

I wish I'd had this 95 page book when my kids were in the early years. Instead I had several thick books full of clinical studies and terms that boggled my already deteriorating confidence as a parent.
Brenda's friendly "been there done that" tone allows the reader to laugh with her (I Shudda Listened)and at themselves in their desire to be the perfect parent.
She's got all the stuff you need to know in these few easy to read pages. And if you still want more on a specific topic, she includes five pages of Parent Resources.

What amazing advice Brenda Dixon pushed into 96 pages of her parenting book.
With winter and flu season--and unfortunately, ill children, I've had a lot of at-home downtime to read her book. But it is also designed so you could pick it up and read a little to learn about how to handle your immediate concern.
From the moment of "I'm scared out of my mind" when you arrive home with that first newborn, to the day they start kindergarten, Dixon has sound advice--advice I felt I could trust.
Her goal is to have parents realize that you are your child's best and most influential teacher, and that parenting guidelines you use in these early ages are the foundation for all future parenting.
The most common concerns most of us parents have are covered: thumb-sucking, temper tantrums, clinginess, separation anxiety,toilet training, and she also discusses spanking.
I wish someone had given me this book earlier as it might have saved some unnecessary worry and doubt at my parenting skills.

Realizing the Power of Love: How a Father and Teenage Daughter Became Best Friends...and How You can, Too! by the father-daughter writing team V. Michael Santoro and Jennifer Santoro offers its readers a roadmap for an important family dynamic: the relationship between fathers and daugthers.
Instead of having a fear-based conversation, the authors suggest helpful alternatives to the typical "Because I said so!" statements we exasperated parents use to silence our children. Narrated from the perspective of one hard-working father, the book acts as an intimate investigation into a specific relationship between father and daughter. While their story may not apply to every person's situation, I felt drawn to the narrative for its empowering simplicity. `Speak to your teen as an adult' resonated throughout the book. Offer guidelines, not a strict codex that only a military could enforce. Recognize your child's ability to handle things. Allow your child to make mistakes while acting as his or her safety net. This is a collection of eight important speeches given by Fidel Castro during the first twenty years of the Cuban revolution. The talks will help anyone seeking to understand the profound impact that this revolution had--and continues to have--on working-class fighters, youth, and others in Cuba as well as throughout the Americas and the world.
Given at mass rallies and over Cuban TV and radio, these speeches are educationals demonstrating Castro's profound confidence that the socialist revolution's progress and defense are completely linked to the voluntary participation and developing political (increasingly communist and internationalist) understanding of its workers and farmers.
This idea comes across especially in the important 1962 talks "The Revolution Must be a School of Unfettered Thought" and "Against Bureaucracy and Sectarianism."
The later was a televised address attacking Anibal Escalante who endangered the revolution through his secret efforts to build a privileged, bureaucratic faction that was alienating masses of workers and farmers eager to assume a leading role in the revolution's work. Cuba's firm hand against these methods pointed a way forward for revolutionary-minded fighters seeking to reestablish continuity with the program and methods of the founding leaders of the 1917 Soviet revolution--a continuity that had been betrayed by some 40 years of Stalinist crimes carried out in the name of socialism.
Cuba's internationalist foreign policy also stands out in these speeches in sharp contrast to the functioning of Stalinist regimes and their allied parties. Castro's 1963 speech "The Road to Revolution in Latin America" and his 1967 "Those Who Are Not Revolutionary Fighters Cannot Be Called Communists" were part of an important debate on the lessons of the Cuban revolution for the rest of Latin America and the Caribbean. The latter of these--with its account of the lessons of the class struggle in Venezuela at the time--will be of great interest to those following the developing conflict between Washington and the Hugo Chavez regime today.
From the interplay Castro has with his listeners at rallies, it's easy to see through the imperialist-inspired myth that reduces everything about the Cuban revolution to one leader. In his own words, Castro emerges not only as a spokesperson for the revolutionary millions, but as someone who has an ear as well as a voice. He is himself shaped and educated by the revolutionary fighters of Cuba as much as he helps to educate them and lead them forward.
A 1980 talk by Socialist Workers Party leader Jack Barnes on "Twenty Years of the Cuban Revolution" provides an excellent introduction to this collection.

Here are the great speeches Fidel gave in the initial construction of the Cuban revolution in the 1950s and 1960s. Castro realized that to reach and involve the population of Cuba, the speech, drawing hundreds of thousands to hear him, and millions more on radio and television was the real way to lead discussions, to pose questions, and to mobilize the Cuban people in action against imperialism and internal reaction. In doing so he provides an inspiring record and handbook for those of us who want to change the world. As always with Fidel, there is much wit as well as wisdom here.

Everyone should read this book........2007-09-01
Although Peterson is a Republican, his explanation about the legacy of debt we are passing on to our children is bipartisan. Peterson realizes that there is ample blame to spread between both parties! Our country's lack of fiscal responsibility and logical fiscal thinking will cost our country its future if something radical is not done soon. While attacking Social Security is unspeakable, we are rapidly approaching a time when we will have to apply a needs test to receiving benefits. Our current form of patchwork health care is costing us far more money in the long run than creating an intelligent form of universal health care ever could. The war in Iraq is also destroying our economic future as is the cost of a college education. Although as someone noted, Peterson's solutions were far too brief, his willingness to address these issues with clarity will hopefully serve the purpose of driving partisan discussions and creating a desire to reform the systems that will financially destroy our country.
Time for updated edition.......2007-08-07
This is another essential book in the runup to 2008 primaries and elections (* three others are listed below), as it confronts the economic elephant in America's room that threatens our futures and those of our children and grandchildren.
While the book is nearly three years old and ready for an update, the conclusion today is overwhelming: We are facing a crisis, and whoever wins the presidency in 2008 must create a coalition government beholden to no political theology. This government must divorce itself from Republican and Democratic orthodoxies. The parties have fed on each other in a destructive way. The Republicans tax too little and the Democrats spend too much, and they have borrowed the worst from each other and corrupted responsible governance in countless ways. The bill is past due, and the evidence is inescapable.
It is not pretty reading, damns both parties in equal measure, and points toward solutions, particularly a fairer tax system on corporate profits and urgent rethinking of entitlements.
Pete Peterson brings serious credibility to the discussion, not only as a University of Chicago-schooled fiscal conservative, but as co-founder of the Blackstone Group, chair of the Council on Foreign Relations and a principal in the Concord Coalition, a nonprofit dedicated to fiscal responsibility at www.concordcoalition.org.
This book kept a small group of us awake in early 2005 after we heard and met Mr. Peterson at a conference at the United Nations, read the book and compared notes. Revisiting this book today, the message is more urgent than ever, and the paperback edition is in sore need of an update, at the very least in the introduction and postscript. The evidence is doubtless more dire than it was, but we need to hear it, particularly as our credit markets wobble.
In the current environment, neither party's candidates show real signs of confronting Peterson's formidable evidence. While the Democrats at least show early signs of grappling with issues, they deserve further prodding.
The Republican party is deep into its decadent phase, with Bush-Cheney-Rove the agents of its moral and intellectual bankruptcy. Ron Paul is at least providing some coherent ideas amid the poseurs of the moment and John McCain knows better, but neither is swaying anything.
Since 1980, when Republican congressional candidates drew the Laffer curve on napkins to demonstrate their mastery of economic quackery, the party has grown increasingly faith-based, denying evidence in the fervor of a theological belief in tax cuts.
Those cuts made proven sense after Reagan cut marginal tax rates from 71 to 50 percent, but no sense at all as Bush cuts into the bone in the low 30s and tries to make it permanent as bridges, highways, our military and trust funds go wanting and as we borrow more from the Chinese to fund our spendthrift ways.
The first step toward recovery of our bearings is facing what is. Every candidate in 2008 should be closely questioned about the evidence from Peterson and the COncord Coalition. One prays that the winner of the next election would look beyond our short-term, infotainment-driven culture of the moment, and just Do The Right Thing to keep our country strong and free at this late hour.
* P.S.: The other three books: Tragic Legacy by Glenn Greenwald (the best book on the consequences of the Bush regime's mindset); Vice: Dick Cheney and the Hijacking of the American Presidency by Lou Dubose and Jake Bernstein, and Second Chance by Zbigniew Brzrezinski (a powerful foreign policy primer on the last three administrations, with some roadmaps of solutions).
This book is fantastic (and that's bad).......2007-05-23
It is critically important that every voting adult read this book. It explains: 1) Why deficits are bad, 2) How we created such large deficits 3) Who's responsible (hint: both democrats and republicans) 4) What we can do to fix the problem, 5) what could happen if we don't. It is as unbiased a politcal book as can be written. It has an entire chapter devoted each to destroying the democratic and republican myths that keep us in deficits. This is a book that I personally recommend to everyone I speak to about books or politics.

Our book club had a great discussion after reading this book. He writes a compelling story of our situation. I thought he could have been stronger on possible solutions.
Heaven help us--our politicians will continue being politicians (both Ds and Rs) until we all go down together on this Titanic earthen voyage.

The author does not cite sources. It is sadly true, there is no bibliography. No one in the academic community could get away with this.
Do not waste your time reading someone's opinion that is not legitimately cited.
