Book Description

A tremendous amount of media attention has been devoted to revealing sexual abuse perpetrated by Roman Catholic priests. These essays outline a clinical and research agenda for professionals dealing with clergy sexual abuse. They should enable research clinical professionals, and clergy to identify the relevant issues in the identification, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of child and adolescent sexual abuse committed by Roman Catholic priests. Leading experts in the field from the United States and Canada have offered their different perspectives on this compelling problem including victim profiles for determining who is at risk.

4 out of 5 stars The Veil Of Secrecy Is Busted: No More Grace For Perverts.......2002-02-06

This book will open the eyes of many people who thought that priests, men of God who are still living in flesh, could not go on a molesting rampage. Well, this book will prove them wrong. Unfortunately, a few bad priests, nasty ones destroy it for all the good priests who have done good work in their parish. The author of this book shows that there are serial fornicators among priests who prey on young altar boys and others under their care.

For many years, the Catholic Church used to keep these news from reaching the mass of faithful. At the same time, those priests' superiors kept assigning them to other parishes where they resumed abusing people. Maybe now, they will look forward to assigning them to foreign countries where laws are lax. It's unfortunate these people will still be around young souls to hurt.

Any way, this is a good book that will give a clinical and historical background of a problem that has existed among the faithful for far too long. Now the judges and proscutors want to drag these mischievous priests before the rules of law. No more hiding! No more lies from those who should have known better. No more covering the backs of those priests who had a nasty hobby of hurting innocent children.

A good book to read!

5 out of 5 stars Wolves in Sheep's Clothing, Exposed!.......2001-03-08

With this book, Dr. Plante, has made a vitally important and authoritative contribution to the countless efforts being made worldwide to shatter the stubborn stonewall of denial surrounding clergy sexual misconduct within the Catholic church. For those Catholics who persist in believing that priests who engage in sexual misconduct are rare anomalies or that people who accuse them of such are merely liars and bashers, let them read this book. But only after having prepared themselves for the very real possibility that before they even complete their reading, any sacred illusions they currently have about priests will be irrevocably blown to smithereens.

5 out of 5 stars Very balanced, scholarly, and thoughtful.......1999-10-20

This is the first balanced & scholarly book published on this important topic. Excellent insight into this problem and what to do about it.

      Book Description

      How has war changed and damaged the environment? How has nature influenced war? As the first collection of essays on war and environmental history, Natural Enemy, Natural Ally heralds the advent of a major new field of study. Contributors to the volume explore the dynamic between war and the physical environment from a variety of provocative viewpoints. The subjects of their essays range from conflicts in pre-colonial India and early colonial South Africa to the U.S. Civil War and twentieth-century wars in Japan, Finland, and the Pacific Islands. Among the topics explored are:

      * the ways in which landscape can influence military strategies;

      * why the decisive battle of the American Civil War was fought;

      * the impact of war and peace on timber resources;

      * the spread of pests and disease in wartime.

      2 out of 5 stars this book is a chore, bore, snore.......2007-09-25

      Ugh....while this book is extremely accessible, the best part of it are the cartoons and they're not that great. This book is required for my course and while I'm interested in theory, I'm not interested in the nitty gritty details that this book tends to list.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2007-05-20

      ...for the study of second language acquisition. Brief and concise, easy and quick read.

      4 out of 5 stars A Decent Intro.......2007-04-09

      Lightbrown and Nada's "How Languages are Learned" makes a good introduction to second language acquisition and some of the linguistic theories that are out there regarding it. Without overloading you with details, the book gives you enough to make some more informed choices about the classroom.

      They start from a basis set in first language learning and some of the ideas that have come from there, as well as the nature of how children learn their first language. From there, it is pretty much straight into second language acquisition, including 5 approaches to it, learner language, interaction approaches and styles, factors that affect second language acquistion, (such as learner beliefs, motivations and even a detailed discussion on the age of students), and a range of others. The book is wrapped up with the authors' responses to 12 common beliefs about language learning.

      For those looking for more inspiration in the classroom, there are better books out there. This one will give you something to think about, and maybe use as a basis for adjusting one's technique, but it really deals more in the theory and how that impacts on our understanding of students. If theory, and a decent introduction to it, is what you are after, then might I recommend this one as a good starting point.

      Unlike some, Lightbrown and Nada have avoided throwing in so much jargon that their book is rendered useless by most people. It is very accessible and easily read. There will probably be no headaches after this one. It is an interesting, well-written book.

      5 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction.......2005-03-28

      I really recommend this book as an introduction to Second Language Acquisition (SLA) reasearch. It was written with the language teacher in mind. Many of the other books on the subject are focused on the researcher rather than the teacher, so this book fills a gap in the literature. The explanations of the major theories are carried out without frequent use of jargon, so it's easy for the beginner to get a handle on SLA theory. I even recommend this for students who are studying SLA in graduate school. This will provide an excellent introduction that could be read before reading more difficult texts. After readinging "How Languages Are Learned", you'll understand more in depth discussions about the theories covered. A must for all practicing language teachers.

      4 out of 5 stars For the new sysadmin.......2004-03-04

      As the various unixes developed in the 1990s, vendors tried to make administration easier by writing proprietary UIs to simplify tasks. For example, IBM came up with SMIT. Of course, each UI was only for that vendor's unix. A developer, Cameron, set out to simplify this across vendors, by writing Webmin. As the book explains, it has now been ported to most unixes and linux.

      The book shows that Webmin is ideal for a new sysadmin. Reduces the intimidation factor of unix. It may be increasingly relevant if linux keeps growing on servers and even on desktops. On the latter, a sysadmin (you!) may well be a former Microsoft OS user who decided to take the plunge into a free operating system, but is worried about the necessary level of expertise.

      All the important admin tasks, like making new user accounts, setting up a mailer, and networking, are possible via Webmin. So if you are still trepid, this book might assuage your concerns. Cooper writes clearly and at a level accessible to many. No prerequisite knowledge of unix is assumed. Plus, he gives only the core functionality of Webmin, to avoid information overload. The book deliberately eshews explaining every module.

          Book Description

          In this lively history of writing, six goofy birds -- a penguin, two toucans, an owl, and two chickens -- team up to tour the world of writing: how it developed, where alphabets came from, and the origins of international languages such as Latin, Esperanto, and Morse Code, and much more. They begin their time-traveling journey in 4,000 B.C.E. with the Sumerians, who invented pictograms out of the necessity to keep trading records. One of the toucans flies on a kite tail to China to learn about characters, the penguin walks like an Egyptian in full headdress across the desert sands to uncover hieroglyphs, and then there's a mad rush of characters who pass the idea of an alphabet around Europe and the Near East. Delightfully illustrated in full color, Write Around the World includes light-hearted and informative sections on the world's alphabets, languages, handwriting, calligraphy, typefaces and punctuation, icons, and secret codes as well as a glossary of important words.

                Book Description

                All over the world there are people struggling to master the quirks and challenges of English. In today's America, many millions of them are Latino—and in this eloquent collection, nearly 60 of the best known contribute fascinating, revealing, often touching essays on the very personal process each went through to achieve this common end. Their successes are inspiring. Their pieces, engaging and entertaining all, express the whole range of emotions that learning any new language entails.

                Congressman José Serrano, for example, describes learning English from Frank Sinatra records. Cuban-American author Oscar Hijuelos picked it up as a sick little boy in an American hospital bed. Many find it a daunting ordeal; for others English came easily. But from TV personality Cristina Saralegui to Hall of Fame baseball player Orlando Cepeda, every last one remembers what it felt like to do battle with bizarre idioms, irregular verbs, and all the other incomprehensible intricacies that tangle the tongue.

                And of course, every new English-speaker has a tale to tell: an immigrant yearning to assimilate and achieve, or a political exile suddenly far from home and alone, or a child who just wants to fit in. Their fears and triumphs will resonate with everyone who has shared this exasperating, exhilarating experience, whether last year or a lifetime ago. This wonderful, eclectic, inviting collection speaks to—and for—all of them, and goes directly to the heart of the national debate on language and immigration.

                      Book Description

                      The chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, and treecreepers include some of the best-known birds in the world. They also number among them some species so rare that they have been seen by only a handful of birdwatchers. This is the first guide to cover all of these families across the globe. The comprehensive text provides extensive information about each species, including identification, description, vocalizations, geographical distribution and variation, habits, habitats, breeding biology, and relationships. Beautifully drawn full-color plates detail all of the species, and the book includes over 100 color maps and additional line drawings. This is the only guide of its kind. It covers the many members of these popular bird families, which count among them chickadees, titmice, penduline tits, Verdin, Bushtit, long-tailed tits, nuthatches, treecreepers and Wallcreeper. With its worldwide coverage, the book reaches far beyond Europe and North America to encompass the many exciting species to be found in Africa and Asia. Its illustrations are similarly unique and extensive. The author is a well- known writer who is on the editorial board of Birding World magazine and a regular contributor to Bird Watching. The illustrator is an award-winning artist who has been named "Bird Illustrator of the Year" by British Birds magazine. Here is an authoritative guidebook that will appeal to both casual birders and professional ornithologists alike. It is a wonderful resource for anyone who has a birdfeeder and for everyone with an interest in birds.
