A Mom...just like I am a mom!.......2006-10-09
Several reviewers were very disappointed by what they considered to be a misleading title...I wanted to ask them a question...don't you think the author could have meant that she is just a mom...just like you are a mom? Not all moms are the same. There is no way ANY author could write a book that could address EVERY mom's unique experiences. Why should we expect that? The only thing a person can write about with true authority and sincerity is what they have experienced themselves, and I certainly felt that this book was sincere.
What I liked best about this book (which is a favorite of mine and I have recommended it to others many times) is the honesty with which the personal experiences of this family are shared. It was encouraging to read about the struggles they had with various issues and how they resolved them. They did not claim to be perfect...what a relief to hear that not everybody "gets it" the first time and that other people struggle with obedience and attitude just like I do. ( In this area she IS a mom just like me!)
Sometimes in books we get the impression that some other way is just so EASY (at least for the person who wrote the book) and figure that if we try that particular method it will be easy for us, too. The reality is that by the time people get around to writing a book it IS easy for them because they have taken the time to iron out the wrinkles and they may have tried a half dozen other approaches to find the one that worked best for their family. That is why I really liked this book...the reader is allowed to see the wrinkles in the journey, and seeing those imperfections greatly encouraged me about my own. Thanks to the authors for sharing their ups and downs!
This book was kind of like having tea with another mother down the street who has been homeschooling longer and listening to her story and the wise advice hidden in it. Not everything was a perfect match for me, for who else's life is, but I can still get a lot from the lessons she learned in her story. For example, while I cannot afford a housekeeper or paid helper either, I CAN befriend the lonely teenager across the street and foster her love for children by letting her play with my little ones while I get some uninterrupted work done in the next room, solving the same two problems (messy house, no time to clean) in a different way. I was just grateful to hear that I was not the only one who struggles to meet the needs of the family and the desire for a clean house...and it helped to hear her husband's advice to "let things go a bit." Whew! You mean an immaculate house, home baked bread, and perfectly behaved children who love what they are doing every day, all the time, is not necessary? Hooray! Sure, I would love that, but it is not realistic to expect that all the time. This book helped me see that I can get beyond the difficult days, get creative with the solutions, and above all, listen to God for my answers.
On the subject of the family planning chapters: my own husband and I have been wrestling with this one for years as I have a chronic migraines and he is in the military and often gone. This book is one of the major factors that is encouraging us to let God decide what is right for our family (we currently have four blessings) and I am grateful for it. Releasing childbearing to the Lord may not be where another reader is at in their journey when they read the book, but I, for one, am glad that the chapters are there. I really didn't feel it was in any way condescending. In fact, I thought the author was quite transparent about all the times she and her husband chose to disobey what they felt God was telling them to do. That's brave, not condescending. Also, it was to those same two chapters that I went after we lost a baby to miscarriage, for I felt Vicki really understood the pain of that loss, yet also understood the Sovereignty of God, and I was greatly comforted.
Thank you for the encouragement.
ONE WOMAN'S REMARKABLE JOURNEY OF MOTHERING.......2005-09-08
This is one of my favorite books. My copy has been loaned and returned several times, and I've filled the margins with stars, exclamation points and amens!**! I'm so extremely thankful Mrs. Farris and her daughter took the time to write it.
If anyone has doubts about children being able to be properly educated at home, they need look no further than this book. It was written almost entirely by Mrs. Farris' second daughter, Jayme, who was only in her early 20s at the time of publication. As I read it again recently, I was simply amazed that a young woman could capture the wisdom and experience of her mother, and what a joy it must have been for them to work together on this project.
I can't understand the other reviewers who write negatively about this book. The title is absolutely perfect! It's not supposed to be a practical how-to guide; it's a journey, a very personal peek into the life of a large, successful homeschooling family. Mrs. Farris bravely tells the story of how she came to be a mother of ten children and why they chose to homeschool.
I've heard Michael Farris speak before, and I too wondered what kind of a woman could possibly mother and teach ten children. So that's why I bought the book to begin with. Mrs. Farris writes, "I am a very normal mom who happens to have a very visible, talented, and energetic husband...I struggle regularly with feeling overwhelmed...A super-mom could certainly write her own book! I am very much a mom like you. And from one normal mom to another, let me just tell you that God is faithful..." (Her husband is a successful attorney, the founder of the Home School Legal Defense Association, founder of Patrick Henry College, professor, author of several non-fiction books and novels, and has won many awards.)
The theme of her whole story is that God alone can enable and give grace for a person to accomplish anything. Mrs. Farris grew up as a shy, only child who had little practice in domestic arts or caring for children. She even admits that she is a "scaredy cat" when her husband is away traveling. Yet she uses her weaknesses to draw on God's strength.
The book encompasses her journey of child-bearing, beginning with the birth of her first daughter, and ending with her new role as grandmother. She goes into great detail about how she and her husband made the decisions that led them along this path. It made me see how powerful information is to women in their child-bearing years. While listening to a Focus on the Family radio show, she became interested in homeschooling. Later, it was through reading a magazine article by C. Everett Koop as well as Mary Pride's book, The Way Home, that she decided to relinquish control over planning her family size.
The whole book is funny and encouraging. We see her youngest Peter jumping off the coffee table. We agonize with her as she is planning a wedding while still taking care of a child in the middle of the night. We see how her daily afternoon walks help her stay sane and refreshed.
She explains the Farris' principles of child-rearing, mainly "our ultimate goal is to not to raise children, but to raise adults." She discusses the delicate balance between rights and responsibility as children move through different ages. This wisdom is so helpful for moms in the trenches with young kids (like me). I can't personally talk to Mrs. Farris about why her kids turned out so well, but I can read her philosophy and reasoning, and it makes me want to trudge onward and upward, never losing hope.
The last two chapters are extremely inspirational, and for anyone who is planning a mother/daughter speech or tea, these chapters offer you great ideas. She quotes another of my favorite authors, Elisabeth Elliot, who says, "None of the gifts of my own life -- not my "career" or my work or any other gift -- is higher or more precious to me than that of being someone's mother."
The high calling of being a mother is precious indeed. I'm so thankful to have a book that reminds me once again of this powerful truth.

Loved the author, wanted to hear more from her.......2004-07-16
I am a homeschooling mother of 3 children (with number 4 on the way), and I learned about Vickie Farris by attending a recent Christian homeschooling conference in Idaho where her husband was a featured speaker. Her husband was a fascinating, funny, interesting, and informative lawyer and father of 10, so I figured that his wife would have alot to share that would be of interest to me on many levels! I was right about that! The two chapters that Mrs Farris actually writes are exactly what I wanted to hear - her own honest experiences shared in a heart-to-heart manner. I was disappointed to realize that her daughter (who was not yet married or a mother herself) wrote the majority of the book. I am sure it was a bonding experience for both of them, but the "voice" of the author gets lost and it would have made a much better read if the mother could have taken the time to write the book herself (even if it took longer). I understand she was busy with her family, which I respect, but perhaps the project should have been put on hold until she was able to have the time to devote more time to it.
My favorite part of the book is the chapter on birth control, and how she and her husband came to trust the Lord in that area. That is something that my husband and I have dealt with and came to the same conclusions as the author, so for that chapter, it was worth buying the entire book (so long as it was at a discounted price!)
Mis-Named, But Still Interesting!.......2003-02-25
This book isn't really about "A Mom Like Me", nor is it really about homeschooling.
The author is an apparently wealthy mother of 10 homeschooled children. [I say apparently wealthy because her husband is a well known lawyer and she employs a weekly housecleaner, yard person, and mother's helpers - not something most of our budgets will cover].
The book also has really very little to do with homeschooling - extremely little practical advice and only a couple of the chapters are even about homeschooling. There IS a chapter on the religious beliefs that led this family to homeschool, and a very general, superficial [and not so useful] chapter on "homeschooling a housefull".
Instead, this book is a very personal story of the author's life, her faith journey, and her religious beliefs. She is strongly in favor of homeschooling, which one would expect, but she is also very strongly in favor of some other ideas - such as foregoing all family planning [including natural family planning] and "letting the Lord determine her family size" as well as the idea of the wife submitting to the husband.
The book includes a very detailed and personal story of her reproductive history, as well as how she and her husband came to their beliefs. She includes very appropriate scriptural references for everything she suggests and puts forth very intelligent arguments.
While this book was not at all what I expected, I did find it interesting, easy to read, and compelling. I may not agree with all of the author's viewpoints, but I can certainly see how she arrived at them and I can follow her spiritual logic. I enjoyed the book thoroughly.
There was a slight shadow of arrogance running throughout the book that was a little annoying. It was sort of a sense of "this is how *I* do things and my way is the right way". Sometimes it felt a little like the author was saying "see how wonderful I am!" I didn't agree with all of her suggestions or the way her family handled everything, but I still found the book very interesting and thought provoking.
This book was misleading.......2002-06-19
This book is more of a bio of the author's life and her brood. There was very little homeschooling information in it. The author spent many pages talking about not using birth control and while I found this topic interesting, many probably will not. If you're looking for a book about homeschooling, don't get this one, but if you're looking for a book about what God says about contraception (or what the author believes about this issue in relation to Christians), then you'll be in luck. I was looking for both, which is why I did like the book a bit.

Robert Bork will go down as one of history's footnotes. Nominated to the Supreme Court by Ronald Reagan in 1987, he was voted down by the Senate following a no-holds barred confirmation fight. Almost a decade later, he returns to reopen old wounds with Slouching towards Gomorrah, an extended attack against everything liberal. From pop culture and our universities to the church (Protestant and Roman Catholic) and the Supreme Court--the very institution he once fought so hard to join--Bork finds fault wherever he looks. This is a bitter book from a passionate man who has very little good to say about the world he lives in.
Book Description
In this New York Times bestselling book, Robert H. Bork, our country's most distinguished conservative scholar, offers a prophetic and unprecedented view of a culture in decline, a nation in such serious moral trouble that its very foundation is crumbling: a nation that slouches not towards the Bethlehem envisioned by the poet Yeats in 1919, but towards Gomorrah.
Slouching Towards Gomorrah is a penetrating, devastatingly insightful exposé of a country in crisis at the end of the millennium, where the rise of modern liberalism, which stresses the dual forces of radical egalitarianism (the equality of outcomes rather than opportunities) and radical individualism (the drastic reduction of limits to personal gratification), has undermined our culture, our intellect, and our morality.
In a new Afterword, the author highlights recent disturbing trends in our laws and society, with special attention to matters of sex and censorship, race relations, and the relentless erosion of American moral values. The alarm he sounds is more sobering than ever: we can accept our fate and try to insulate ourselves from the effects of a degenerating culture, or we can choose to halt the beast, to oppose modern liberalism in every arena. The will to resist, he warns, remains our only hope.

BAM!!!.......2007-09-23
Never before have I read a review summarily describing the rise of the Leftist movement (at least in modern times and in American culture) than I have seen here. Bork is excellent and presents a very smart argument, one that (since most words are 5 syllables or more) may not be easy reading for everyone, but if you're brave enough to push through and gain the understanding of the meaning of the terms used, will find yourself with a great foothold of where we stand as a country today and why. If you don't know what a syllable is, don't even bother reading this book.
I have read the 1997 paperback edition and it would seem that society will continue to revisit the same issues until something definitive happens, as per his comments and quotes regarding the Vietnam War, which is a shocking parallel to the antagonistic and in some cases Anti-American views regarding the War in Iraq, which seems to indicate that there has been no slowing of this Leftist movement and in fact, their children will soon be throwing their hats into this arena, if not already.
As a Christian in America today, one finds that the easiest and apparently most profitable way for the enemy to bring about the destruction of the family, marriage, children and the church itself is the agenda of the Left movement. Bork, in his observation that until now the work to halt the Leftism in this country has been fragmented and disorganized at best, is correct.
The drive for radical individualism and radical egalitarianism is rampant in society today and one that is not limited to America, either. As morality declines and the threshold of tolerance for all things inherently evil increases, there can be no other assumption but that things will indeed continue in this way until at last, the Leftist movement will have succeeded in accomplishing its goal for a "self" driven, socialist society which at that point will be farther reaching than even they had imagined and will be beyond the point of their control.
Bork's book, though secular, should be a wake up call to Christians and non-Christians alike regarding where this country is headed. A Christian need only read the Bible to tell where indeed the world is heading.
5 stars...a must read.
recommended.......2006-07-23
Reading much of the conservative literature, one can easily get the impression that conservatives are ill-informed, prejudiced and given to widely illogical arguments to advance their causes. Bork is different. He is well-read, careful in his reasoning and respectful of the opinions he disagrees with. One of the ironic side-effects of this reasonableness is that conservative readers will not be enthusiastic about Bork's book because it does not shout their claims with the vindictiveness and emotional abandon they can find in other authors.
Another unfortunate side-effect is that the people who most need to confront these arguments, even if they ultimately disagree with them, will not read this book because it bears the label "conservative."
The first two chapters provide a capsule history of the Left-driven events of the 1960s. In the next two chapters, Bork ventures out of his depth into political philosophy with a discussion of freedom and the limits to freedom, in which he conveniently ignores all the philosophical writing on the subject in the past hundred years. Readers interested in these problems should consult the book What Freedom Is.
In succeeding chapters, he discusses the opinion-shapers of our society (schools, press, TV, pop music), the Supreme Court, popular culture, crime, abortion, feminism, race, education, and religion, finding them all dominated by Leftwing thinking.
For instance, here is some of his take on race. "Affirmative action...is a perfect prescription for racial animosity." (p. 231). Bork discusses the changes in affirmative action law and practice from a temporary outreach program whose purpose was to find qualified minority candidates into a quota system and then into a system of preference based on race. He indicates the thousands of remedies available if discrimination is provable and says that this has led to the invention of the idea of "institutional racism", pointing out that this notion is "simply an admission that actual discrimination cannot be shown." (p. 237). These practices also are "inflicting permanent harm on individuals [white males] who have done nothing wrong." (p. 241).
My major problems with this book are the use of high-level generalizations or abstractions as explanatory factors, especially "-isms". Individualism and egalitarianism are frequently cited as causes of the decline of American culture. Such broad claims would be impossible to support with evidence.
Like most people, Bork is unaware of how the Left managed to get itself so thoroughly in control of so many American institutions, especially since it (the Left) appeared to be finished in the late 1970s. For a blow-by-blow account of how and why this happened, see The Rape of Alma Mater. Some of his generalizations, however, are accurate: "The splintering of the New Left proved to be an advantage because the movement became less visible." (p. 53). "Yet these groups are in touch with one another and often come together in a coalition on specific issues." (p. 53). "The transformation of the New York Times illustrates what has happened to prestige journalism generally." (p. 52).
The current climate in America is beautifully illustrated by a case that Bork cites: "In a faculty sensitivity session at the University of Cincinnati a woman was forced to stand up and be mocked as `a member of the privileged white elite' because she was blond, blue-eyed and well educated." (p. 246).
For a broader perspective from a Moderate point of view, see the new While America Sleeps: How ... and Indoctrination Are Destroying America From Within - While America Sleeps: How Islam, Immigration and Indoctrination Are Destroying America From Within. In spite of the provocative title, this is a thoroughly documented, carefully reasoned book.
North Vietnam Won Because of the American Left.......2006-06-14
Robert Bork shows how the left wing elites have worked to try to destroy our Judeo-Christian heritage. He has a pithy way of expressing the way we have lost our moral bearings in a manner which compromises public morals. For instance, when it comes to raunchy programming, he cites Michael Medved to the effect that saying "Don't like it, just turn if off" is like saying "Turn off the smog if you don't like it." Bork suggests that Rush Limbaugh is popular because he is like the underground satirists in the old Soviet Union. Most interesting is his description of how the left wing caused America to lose in Vietnam. Bork cites Bui Tin, a former North Vietnames military official, who makes it clear that the US antiwar movement gave the North Vietnamese confidence, even in the face of military defeats, that US resolve would crumble with time. Intrigued, I looked up the cited article in the August 3, 1995 WALL STREET JOURNAL, p. A8, and found it quite revealing. But I suspected all this long ago. Even as a child in the 1960's, long before I even knew what a liberal was, I noticed the inordinate media attention to the antiwar movement and almost total silence on the cruelties of the Communists.
PROBABLY WORTH READING.......2006-01-09
In this book, Bork explores America's swing to the left since the 60's, and how it has sent the country 'slouching Towards Gomorrah'. All the major political issues of the day are included here, from abortion to the O.J. Simpson case. Bork's legal philosophy is explained, and he points out how insane our mindset has become, in that ideas once thought crazy are now accepted without question. As expected, numerous examples of left wing madness are given, and these alone probably make the book worth reading.
Unfortunately, there is little new in this book from a conservative perspective. Educated readers will have heard most of the arguments before, and so one learns little from the work.
One can also take issue with some of his views, even from a right perspective. Bork supports censorship, for instance, citing pornography and filthy rap and rock lyrics. Here here is on very dangerous ground. For who would do the censoring? As things stand now, the liberal elite might be in charge of that, and they are unlikely to stop much obscenity. And even if they did, it would surely go hand in hand with censorship of conservative opinion. Politically incorrect statements and works would be banned as 'offensive'. I doubt Bork would like that.
Shortsighted tripe about an America that never was........2005-11-02
I always laugh at radical conservatives that long for "the good old days". Like most righties, Bork thinks America should revert to a more simple time. A time when blacks knew their place, women stayed pregnant and silent, the average life span was 50 years, and the police ( J. Edgar Hoover was the worst one of the bunch)could spy on an unsuspecting public with impunity. You betcha!! Those were "the good old days". I suppose, speaking from a strict constructionist perspective of course, that we should repeal all the amendments of the constitution. I mean, the founding fathers were infallible right? If that happened we would still have slavery, and only land owning men would be allowed to vote. Dare to dream huh Bork.

Description:
In this study we compared the egg size, the eggshell thickness and the number of spermatozoa trapped on the perivitelline layer of the eggs in three blue tit (Parus caeruleus) populations across a heavy metal pollution gradient. No significant differences were observed in egg characteristics among study sites. Eggs from the two most polluted sites however, had significantly less spermatozoa on the perivitelline layer than eggs from the least polluted site. Our results suggest a significant effect of pollution on blue tit sperm concentrations in the infundibulum. Determining the number of spermatozoa on the egg membranes is relatively cheap and straightforward, which renders this technique a new and useful tool in biomonitoring.

Description:
Theory suggests that macro- and micro-parasites may be important factors of selection for life-histories. They generate selection pressures by detrimental effects on host health. Nests of secondary cavity nesters provide a convenient habitat for an assemblage of parasites exploiting nestlings. In this study, natural blue tit Parus caeruleus nests (26) were replaced with clean artificial nests, twice during the nestling stage. This treatment caused an increase of 7-10.5 g/l in hemoglobin level of 12-day-old nestlings in comparison with control nestlings. Nestlings that developed in parasite-pathogen-free nests improved their health status. The experimental sterilization did not affect a morphometric index of condition. Potential effects on condition indices might be masked by trophic conditions.

Description:
A perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) biomonitoring survey was conducted on great tit (Parus major) and blue tit (Parus caeruleus) nestlings from Blokkersdijk, a bird reserve in the proximity of a fluorochemical plant in Antwerp (Belgium) and Fort IV, a control area. PFOS, together with 11 organochlorine pesticides, 20 polychlorinated biphenyl congeners and 7 polybrominated diphenyl ethers were measured in liver tissue. The hepatic PFOS concentrations at Blokkersdijk (86-2788 and 317-3322ng/g wet weight (ww) for great and blue tit, respectively) were among the highest ever measured and were significantly higher than at the control area (17-206 and 69-514ng/g ww for great and blue tit, respectively). The hepatic PFOS concentration was species- and sex-independent and correlated significantly and positively with the serum alanine aminotransferase activity and negatively with the serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels in both species but did not correlate with condition or serum protein concentration. In the great tit, a significant positive correlation was observed between the liver PFOS concentration and the relative liver weight. In the blue tit, the hepatic PFOS concentration correlated positively and significantly with hematocrite values. None of the investigated organohalogen pollutants except for PFOS were suggested to be involved in the observed biological alterations.

The reproductive success and quality of blue tits (Parus caeruleus) in a heavy metal pollution gradient [An article from: Environmental Pollution]

Description:
Studying the effects of pollution on the reproductive performance of birds in the natural environment is of increasing importance due to the need to monitor environmental quality biologically. In this study we investigated the reproductive success and the quality of blue tits in four study sites (at 0.1, 1, 2.5 and 4 km from a metallurgic smelter) located within a heavy metal pollution gradient during three consecutive years. At the two sites closest to the pollution source, a significantly higher proportion of females had egg laying interruptions, and the interruptions also lasted longer (although not significantly). Although the hatching success differed significantly among sites, these differences could not be related to differences in pollution levels. Other important breeding parameters such as the start of egg laying, the clutch size and the breeding success did not differ significantly among sites. Our results suggest that exposure to heavy metal pollution did not influence blue tit reproduction in an important way.

Description:
Animal populations living in geographically variable environments respond to different selection pressures. The adaptive character of the responses to environmental information determines the degree of synchrony of the breeding period with local optimal conditions. An example is provided by two populations of Mediterranean blue tits (Parus caeruleus) in Corsica, breeding in different habitats, with a 1-month difference in the onset of egg laying. This difference in the onset of lay is supposed to be adaptive because, although chicks from both populations are raised mostly on caterpillars, the timing of the appearance of caterpillars is earlier for populations of tits associated with deciduous oak trees than those associated with evergreen oak trees. Here, we show that, despite the difference in the timing of egg laying, males from these two populations start seasonal hypothalamo-hypophysial-testicular development at approximately the same time, in late winter. Specifically, the vernal recrudescence of brain GnRH-I perikarya and fibers, testes volume and song activity began around the same dates and proceeded at the same pace in late winter in both populations. Plasma testosterone and LH levels displayed seasonal variations that were shifted by less than 2 weeks compared to the 1-month difference in egg laying periods. We hypothesize that the strong selection pressures on these two populations to adapt the timing of their breeding seasons to their local environment may have acted mostly on the female egg laying dates, and not so much on the initiation and rate of seasonal recrudescence of the hypothalamo-hypophysial-testicular activity in males.
