5 out of 5 stars Truly a "handbook" for Waldorf parenting.......2006-03-04

Written to meet the needs of parents interested in Waldorf Education this book has a practical and philosophical basis. This handbook traces in great detail the physical, psychological and intellectual growth of the child from conception through adolescence. Also explains how Waldorf education supports and nurtures the thought, feeling and will forces of the developing individuality.

It is easy to read and full of information particularly for families new to Waldorf Education. It covers the full spectrum of development including pre-birth, the 1st three years, temperaments, fantasy play and then gives a description of the grades. The book answers a lot of the "why do they do it that way" questions that people often ask about Waldorf Education.

4 out of 5 stars Book Review: "The Bridge at Remagen".......2007-09-26

I bought the book because my Ballantine paperback copy of "The Bridge at Remagen" (published in 1957 and sold for 50 cents) was falling apart. I was pleasantly surprised to find many additional photographs in the Pictorial Histories version along with an updated biography of Ken Hechler.

great book it a must have I have the movie and when I read the book it was great.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant History.......2004-08-19

Hopefully this review will provide prospective buyers what they need to know.

As good as the original paperback version of this book was when it was first written, Pictorial Histories have put out an even better version with this large softcover offering, including rare photos of the major participants that the original lacked.

This is an excellent account of the encounter between Company A of the 27th Armored Infantry Regiment and the German defenders of the Ludendorff Bridge in March 1945. The main characters on both sides are brilliantly fleshed out by the author, and the strategies and tactics on both sides give a good look of both the big picture and the actual events of the battle itself.

Very nice additional chapter on the making of the movie is just icing on the cake.

Hechler was actually in the US Army in 1945 and is a solid historian. Only drawback may be lack of footnotes for the scholarly minded, but this book still gets a 5 for its coverage of the battle itself, and the aftermath - including German efforts to destroy the bridge, the postwar careers of some of the main players, the final collapse of the span itself, and the summary trials of the German defenders.

All battles deserve the kind of coverage this little skirmish recieves in this well written, suspenseful, and exciting book. So well written you might think it is fiction.

One of my favorite books relating to WWII is "The Bridge at Remagen" and had I the opportunity to witness a portion of the movie set, on location at Remagen on the Rhine River. I was attending Frankfurt American High School 1968 through 1970 and had the fortune of watching the movie set which was used for all the on-site location shoots for the David Wolper Film. I had gone on a Rhine River Cruise in 1968 and stopped to observe the film shooting that took place. The movie was released a year later and became a huge box office hit in 1969. I read the first paperback in 1978 by Ken Hechler and consequently his 1994 book with the same title. I found the book to be historicaly accurate and intensely focused on the human factor of the major caracters in the story. I would recommend that if all possible, any reader should visit the Museum opened in one of the original Towers at the the site of the former bridge that pays homage to the events and lives from March 7th, 1945. Take the Rhine River Cruise that starts in Bingen and goes north to Bonn past Remagen; you will see the most incredible sights of the Castles and the Rhine Valley, sending you back in time to help you experience the book. My wife and I just took the tour in August and I had to read the book again.

My interest in the Second World War was rekindled by reading the bestseller WWII book, "The Triumph and the Glory", part of which was devoted to the Remagen Bridge capture. "The Bridge at Remagen" filled in all of the details about how the Rhine was breached in fine fashion, the author has done a great job describing the events surrounding one of the great episodes of WWII.

    Book Description

Following the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes, the Allies began steps for the final assault into Germany. The long-delayed US Army thrust over the Roer River, Operation Lumberjack, finally took place in February, placing the US Army along the Rhine. The Rhine represented the last major geographical barrier to the Allied advance into Germany. The plan was for Montgomery's 21st Army Group to leap the Rhine into the Ruhr in a carefully choreographed attack called Operation Plunder. In the event, fortune smiled on the US Army when the 9th Armored unexpectedly found that the Ludendorff bridge at Remagen had not yet been demolished by the Wehrmacht, leaving this one major crossing over the Rhine intact. An armored infantry team supported by the new Pershing tanks stormed the bridge, seized it in fierce fighting and disarmed the charges placed on it. They then held it against numerous counterattacks in which the Germans used conventional tactics and unconventional, including jet bombers, V-2 missiles, and frogmen.

Remagen was not the only impromptu Rhine crossing made by the US Army in central Germany but it was the most dramatic and hardest fought. The irrepressible George Patton, in spite of instructions to stay put, snuck an infantry division across the Rhine in the south, setting the stage for the race into Germany. After reinforcing their two major Rhine crossings, the US Army launched its late-March offensive, encircling Frankfurt, and setting the stage for the defeat of the Wehrmacht in the West. This is a gripping, authoritative account of a crucial battle during the last major set-piece operation of the war.

Remagen was always of interest to me, even as a child, as my father had crossed near there. Many years later I the opportunity to correspond with fellow Tennessean Hugh Mott, a hero of Remagen, who disarmed the German charges and earned a place into the U.S. Army Engineer Hall of Fame. Despite reading a number of other books on Remagen, this one remains my favorite. Super informative, accurate, easy reading and well illustrated. Like the other reviewers, I give this one the top rating. Lots of information in a small book!

I bought this book for my father, who was at Remagen. He was one of the last to cross this bridge. He has really enjoyed reading it and has learned some new things about it as a result. He recently went back to Europe to retrace his footsteps from when he fought there and visited the Remagen sight. The book has given him some new insights, confirmed things that he knew and has been good reading for him.

5 out of 5 stars small battle - big result.......2007-01-16

Many WW2 history buffs are familiar with how the US 9th Armored Division found an undestroyed bridge over the Rhine River, staged a daring attack and how the last physical barrier into the heart of Hitler's Germany was crossed. Mr. Zaloga looks not only at the actions around the small town of Remagen itself, but how this event changed Allied strategy in the final weeks of the war. For the history trivia fan there is good information presented about the terrain around Remagen, about the various units from both sides that were involved in the fighting and about the efforts to protect the bridgehead. By grabbing a foothold on the far side and steadily building up and widening it, the Americans were able to coordinate with the large British crossing operation later and create a huge encirclement of the major German forces protecting their industrial heart. To quote a tag line from a 1969 movie "the Germans lost a bridge, thirty days later they lost a war". Very readable and organized text with good illustrations. An excellent addition to your collection.

    5 out of 5 stars A Superb Campaign History.......2006-11-16

Veteran military historian Stephen J Zaloga turns in another fine chapter in Second World War history in Osprey's Campaign series #175, Remagen 1945. In this volume, Zaloga does not only describe the dramatic US capture of the Ludendorff Bridge over the Rhine River on 7 March 1945, but the sequence of events preceding it that led to this coup and the subsequent results once the Third Reich's last line of defense in the west was breached. Although the Remagen operation has been described before - most famously by Ken Hechler's classic 1953 account - Zaloga still manages to bring fresh perspective and insight to this narrative account.

The opening sections in this volume outline the strategic situation on the western front in late winter 1945, with the Wehrmacht on the point of collapse. As usual, the author does not spend much time discussing the opposing commanders but dives straight into the opposing armies section, which is quite good. Zaloga notes that the Wehrmacht was virtually out of infantry and fuel by this point in the war, but still had quite a lot of artillery and flak left, which gave the Allies trouble as they approached German urban areas. Due to the proximity to the Ruhr's industrial base, there were also a number of heavy panzer units forming in the area that tended to appear out of nowhere to mount last-ditch counterattacks. On the other side, the author notes that the US Army was reaching its pinnacle of wartime efficiency and its units were nearly at full-strength and full-supplied, giving them an enormous edge over depleted German units. In the plans section, the author notes that Hitler's demand to maintain the 15th Army on the Westwall defenses rather than fall back to the Rhine precluded an effective defense at Remagen, while American plans were made in the anticipation that no bridges would be left standing when they reached the Rhine. The result was that the Germans were forced to extemporize a defense at Remagen from odds and ends when the Westwall defenses were overrun, while the Americans had to extemporize the exploitation of a river crossing when fortune handed them a bridge. How armies handle the unexpected in war is an excellent measure of their innate effectiveness and this volume provides much fodder on that question.

Remagen 1945 includes five 2-D maps (closing on the Rhine, 8 Feb - 10 March 1945; bouncing the Rhine, 24-28 March 1945; breakout from Remagen, 24-28 March 1945; encircling the Ruhr, 24 March - 4 April 1945' aftermath of Remagen, 4-18 April 1945) and three 3-D maps (Operation Lumberjack, 1-7 March 1945; Remagen, 7/8 March 1945; Operation Voyage, 29 March - 1 April 1945). The map of Remagen is one of the best 3-D maps that Osprey has made in a long time and clearly shows the value of this type of graphic depiction for small unit actions. Two excellent battle scenes by artist Peter Dennis (Arado 234 jet bomber attack on the Ludendorff Bridge, 9 March 1945; King Tigers vs. Task Force Wellborn near Paderborn, 30 March 1945) are also included. The B/W photographs throughout the volume are good, although many are part of the NARA collection and have appeared frequently in other books.

After covering the US advance to the Rhine and the 9th Armored Division's capture of the Ludendorff Bridge, the author then spends time discussing the rapid expansion of the bridgehead and the final breakout in late March 1945. German efforts to attack the bridge and seal off the foothold are also discussed in detail. The final section of the narrative covers the US advance toward Paderborn (inc. the death of Major General Rose) and the encirclement of the Ruhr. Overall, this volume provides a smooth synthesis of the US official histories, German accounts and other secondary accounts, plus the author's insight, to render a solid and reliable assessment of this critical operation.

    Book Description

It was a stunning strategic victory of World War II–and one of the most fantastic breaks for the Allies. On March 7, 1945, a small group of American infantrymen, engineers, and tank crews secured the Ludendorff Bridge that crossed the Rhine. The successful mission saved thousands of American lives and spearheaded the invasion of Nazi Germany.

The Bridge at Remagen is the detailed narrative of this surprising but crucial military action, one that stunned the German army. It is also the moving story of men who did not consider themselves heroes, but who performed magnificently under fire. In this amazing true story, Ken Hechler gives you the hour-by-hour account of brilliant military daring, human courage, and almost incredible luck that profoundly changed the course of the war.

    5 out of 5 stars A WWII Rarity, A Real, "Definitive" Account.......2007-02-10

"Definitive," is not a word to be used lightly, especially in published works of history and biography. Yet publishers still churn out books dealing with these two categories and use "definitive," quite lavishly.

Despite the mostly brazeness with which the term is used, occasionally there comes along a book that covers its subject so well, so thoroughly that no other term but "definitive," can be used to describe it. "The Bridge at Remagen," is such a book.

Ken Hechler's sole published work on World War II, is the first and last word of the U.S. Army's surprise capture of the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen, allowing the Allies to pierce the Rhine, the last natural barrier they had to overcome before moving on to the heart of Hitler's rapidly crumbling Third Reich. Hechler himself was uniquely qualified to write the book. He was near Remagen when the bridge was captured so he quickly went there and interviewed the key American participants. The war ended, Hechler went home and pursued a career in politics. During the 1950's, he found his notes and decided to get the rest of the story. He interviewed the German personnel involved (nearly a decade after the war's end) and published this book as a Ballantine original. It has never gone out of print since it's initial publication in 1957. What better testimony can there be of this book's accomplishment?

As to the book itself, it's a tight, fast moving piece of historical writing. It's an even rarer work of military history: an actual page turner. Mr. Hechler is a superb narrator and lets the facts and the participants tell the story. He only offers his opinions near the end of the book where he tells the reader that the Ludendorff Bridge's capture certainly hastened the end of the war (in hindsight, how couldn't it?). His opinions are reasonably stated and well argued. I finished the book in two days. Had I not had a 2 year-old daughter, I would have read it in one.

With his one book Hechler's "The Bridge at Remagen," is a rare achievment in World War II bibliography; an actual definitive account.

      Book Description

By the spring of 1945, the war was turning into a rout as the Germans retreated on all fronts. There was, however, one major obstacle to the Allied advance in the west: the River Rhine.

If the retreating German forces were able to destroy the final bridges across the river in advance of the Allied forces reaching them, then the advancing forces would be forced to make an opposed - and highly costly in terms of men and materiel - crossing of the river.

Thus the Ludendorff railway bridge at Remagen became pivotal. In the months after D-Day, the bridge had been the focus of Allied attempts as destruction in order to prevent German reinforcements crossing it; by the end of 1944 the race was on to try and capture the bridge intact.

By early March 1945 the Allied forces were less than 10km from the bridge; the bridge at Cologne had already been destroyed - accidentally as a bomb caused the detonation charges to explode prematurely - and the Remagen bridge became critical.

      Book Description

In Spring 1945 one final hurdle faced the American and British Armies under Ike's supreme command - the Rhine. This mighty river was literally the last ditch for the defence of Hitler's Germany. Crossing it would be a major military undertaking. The race was on to find intact crossings that could save many lives and precious time.

Famously the American forces in a daring coup-de-main operation seized the Bridge at Reagen which due to German blunder and oversight remained intact.

This is the thrilling story of that success.

      4 out of 5 stars Was it Luck...or Treason?.......2004-08-22

Throughout most of the Second World War, the German army enjoyed an enviable reputation for thorough planning and tactical excellence; it was a rare occasion when the Germans performed miserably on the battlefield. The loss of the Ludendorff Bridge over the Rhine River on 7 March 1945 was one of those rare occasions where the Germans performed miserably. For years, the only real source material available on the dramatic seizure of the Remagen Bridge came from a single source - US historian Ken Hechler - who wrote both a monograph for the official history and the mass-market "Bridge at Remagen." Andrew Rawson bases much of his volume on Remagen on Hechler's work but succeeds in bringing a fresh perspective in this volume by covering the battle for the bridgehead as well as the seizure of the bridge.

In the Second World War, the Remagen Bridge was an important escape route across the Rhine for shattered German units retreating from the Allied offensives in early 1945. By the time the war approached sleepy Remagen, the defenses of the town consisted of only 36 third-rate troops under two war-weary reserve officers: Captain Bratge and Captain Friesenhahn. Hitler had decreed that no bridges over the Rhine would be captured intact by the Allies and preparations were made to destroy the bridge to prevent capture, but the preparations were unusually slipshod. On the other side of the hill, Rawson describes the relentless advance of the US 9th Armored Division to the Rhine during Operation "Lumberjack" on 1-7 March 1945. Rawson clearly highlights the chaos and confusion in the German chain of command following the collapse of the front on the western bank of the Rhine, with commanders and units changing rapidly. The standard view - which Rawson abides with - is that the tiny bridge security company was lost in the shuffle and the German 67th Corps commander did not realize how threadbare the defenses were at this critical point. However, this version of Remagen - which essentially views the failure to blow the bridge from the perspective of three frustrated company grade officers at Remagen and an oblivious higher headquarters at Bonn - ignores the role of all the German troops crossing over the bridge.

Rawson mentions that over 20 German tanks crossed the Remagen Bridge the day before the Americans arrived - yet why was not a single tank anywhere to be seen when the Americans arrived hours later? Both a battalion of the German 3rd Airborne Division and an anti-aircraft unit set up in Remagen but then withdrew without orders. Clearly, German units and officers were putting personal safety ahead of their duty to protect a key crossing over the Rhine River. Moreover, the German army didn't only cross the Rhine at Remagen, but failed to establish any kind of defenses on the east side of the river. Unfortunately, Rawson fails to mention the disagreements between local German commanders: while many Germans believed that the American main effort would be made at Bonn, the 15th Army Commander believed that the Americans might try for Remagen and he told the 67th Corps Commander (General Hitzfeld) that the bridge was his responsibility. In a pathetic minimal attempt at compliance, Hitzfeld sent Major Scheller and eight soldiers to the bridge. Therefore the overall command failure on the German side clearly falls on General Hitzfeld, as well as the commanders of the 3rd Airborne, 272nd and 277th Volksgrenadier divisions who had troops in the area of the bridge.

Aside from the German command failures that led to such inadequate resources for the defense of the bridge, the greatest "mystery" about Remagen remains about why most of the explosives on the bridge did not detonate. Rawson suggests sabotage by Polish workers or shrapnel damage to the electrical wires as possible explanations, but these just don't ring true. It is very hard to believe that a German military engineer could not make 600 pounds of explosives detonate even under fire; time and again, other German engineers had blown up Rhine bridges in the faces of US troops. There is another possibility that Rawson and Hechler never suggest, but which bears consideration: treason. By March 1945, most Germans were war-weary and an Allied victory was in sight. The only result of fighting on further was to cause more death and destruction in Germany. Is it not possible that two junior German reserve officers, operating with minimal supervision from above and surrounded by chaos, decided not to destroy the bridge? They might have surmised that a quick Allied crossing of the Rhine would spare Remagen further fighting and end the war more quickly. Of course, when Major Scheller showed up from corps - three hours before the American tanks - Bratge and Friesenhahn had to put on a show of resistance so perhaps they detonated only a small charge, enough to cause some superficial damage. There are two indicators that Bratge and Friesenhahn had no intention to destroy the bridge. First, they had only 36 troops available but they sent almost all of them to an observation position (and apparently without communication gear, since the NCO had to run back to the bridge to warn of approaching tanks) almost one kilometer from the bridge; thus, the bulk of the bridge security detail was left out of the battle. Second, Bratge and Friesenhahn seem to have made virtually no effort to install obstacles on the bridge. While they did detonate a cratering charge on the causeway leading to the bridge that held up US tanks, they failed to put up any serious anti-infantry obstacles. Even with the limited time and resources available, Bratge and Friesenhahn could have strung some barbed wire across the bridge and blocked foot traffic with a few wrecked vehicles (preferably on fire). Finally, Bratge and Friesenhahn took no part in actually opposing the American crossing - they were skulking in the rail tunnel - and they quickly surrendered to the first US troops across.

This book is an effort to interest young people in Judaism. It provides a variety of quizzes on aspects of Jewish life and identity. It has a rich concentration of information about Jewish religious life.
One might consider this a way of ' dumbing down ' Jewish education and thus look at it negatively. Or one might as I prefer to do look at it as another attempt to provide 'material' that will bring Jewish young people to learning more about their heritage, and themselves.
