Provides some good information but not very in-depth.......2000-07-08
What information this book does have is very well-organized, clearcut, easy to understand. Not very unique information nor in depth. A decent introductory book but not good to have if you already have or plan on buying other good books on diabetes. Too many of what would have been helpful sections spend a page or two basically telling you to consult your insurance, your dietician or other sources--I'd say more than 1/3 of the book doesn't really contain information.

Five Years to Freedom: The True Story of a Vietnam POW
ASIN: 0440218802
Release Date: 1994-08-01 |
Book Description
Their mission: To take out the scuds. Eight went out. Five came back. Their story had been closed in secrecy. Until now. They were British Special Forces, trained to be the best. In January 1991 a squad of eight men went behind the Iraqi lines on a top secret mission. It was called Bravo Two Zero. On command was Sergeant Andy McNab. "They are the true unsung heroes of the war." -- Lt. Col. Steven Turner, American F-15E commander. Dropped into "scud alley" carrying 210-pound packs, McNab and his men found themselves surrounded by Saddam's army. Their radios didn't work. The weather turned cold enough to freeze diesel fuel. And they had been spotted. Their only chance at survival was to fight their way to the Syrian border seventy-five miles to the northwest and swim the Euphrates river to freedom. Eight set out. Five came back. "I'll tell you who destroyed the scuds -- it was the British SAS. They were fabulous." -- John Major, British Prime Minister. This is their story. Filled with no-holds-barred detail about McNab's capture and excruciating torture, it tells of men tested beyond the limits of human endurance... and of the war you didn't see on CNN. Dirty, deadly, and fought outside the rules.

Heavy Stuff.......2007-08-31
This book was given to me as a birthday present and it was certainly a very sobering read. A mission behind enemy lines goes pear shaped from the get go and our highly specialised SAS team is straight into a fight for their lives.
The bulk of the book is around the capture and subsequent torture over a long period and you have to wonder just how much the human body can endure. Andy witnesses and experiences incredible brutality at the hands of his captors and loses close friends.
If you want to read something that is a small snapshot of a greater scenario, still true to life but not bogged down in any politics of the situation, then give this a go. But I hope you have a strong stomach.
At least they can't make us pregnant........2007-08-06
Eight men with relatively low-tech equipment and minimal planning go out into the desert to destroy a communication cable and Scud missile launchers. Although their preparation is detailed, the mission itself is vague - go blow stuff up.
Like Spartan graduates of the Agoge, they are adept at improvising and eager to take whatever they need (especially if it is something new and shiny). These are great attributes for people in this profession, but it comes across as these skills were also necessary to obtain basic materials needed to accomplish their mission instead of having basic materials issued by their government.
Some of the mistakes are difficult to comprehend, especially since the British have a long history in the Middle East. Anybody who has been to the desert knows that it can get very cold at night and inadequate cold weather gear caused them a lot of unnecessary hardship. Having the wrong radio frequencies is completely inexcusable.
Overall this is an outstanding book about an amazing group of soldiers that many will breeze thorough very quickly. The abuse they took from the Iraqi troops after their capture is terrible, but their sense of humor was unfazed. As they said, "at least they can't make us pregnant".
Great read, regardless of level of truthfulness.......2007-05-19
Whatever you believe about the amount of fiction vs. fact in this book, there is no diputing that it's an entertaining page-turner. The incredible account of the endurance that it took to survive this event makes you really appreciate just how unique special forces servicemen are. I'll be reading some of the other books about this event just because I enjoyed the tale and I'd love to get the other perspectives, but if you are reading for entertainment you won't be let down. I just wouldn't necessarily base a factual report solely on this one work.
The boys own version of the story.......2007-03-27
This is a well known story and there's no point reviewing events. It's pretty well written and does tell the story of a patrol that certainly went wrong.
Some other SAS folks disagree with this description of events and especially don't like that two of their friends died avoidably. But stuff happens, the SAS are not gods on earth, though they do have an outstanding reputation.
There are details in this book which are probably fabricated, mistaken or overstated but it is one view of the action that occurred and should be read in context with the books of the other patrol members, their disagreements are relatively minor really.
True Soldiers.......2007-01-05
Bravo Two Zero is the true to life account (although some what dramatized Im sure) of a comprimized SAS mission during Desert Storm/Shield. It's an exciting read and the interactions between the men are great. The amount of detail and professionalism that goes into planning a mission can really be seen throughout the book. There's a movie adaption of the book out there too, but naturally, I recommend reading the book first. Im current reading the Bravo Two Zero spin-off called "The One That Got Away", written by the only team member of Bravo to evade capture. I recommnd this book to any military personnel or to anyone who enjoys the military genre of books.

Great Insight To the true story behind the mission.......2006-06-01
Great Book, he tells the reads about the mission, but also the struggle to publish the book that the us goverment tryied to ban and his struggle to fight through the courts. also he talks about is life before the mission in millarty life and as a child. I KNOW MIKE COLBURN PERSONALLY and hearing his story, brings a new light into what the man in the Bravo two zero mission went through.
More of the same..........2005-10-03
Mark Coburns account of what happened on that fateful mission is not such a bad story on its own, but if you have read the other books and are familiar with the basic story then you will find it tedious and not as "revealing" as it claims to be. He basically tells the story from his point of view and apart from a few interesting contrasts with McNabs and Ryans books, it doesnt really give the reader more insight into what really happened. It could however be that the actual events were not really as dramatic and "awe-inspiring" as the other members of the patrol made it out to be. We will never know. Either way, more little details about the mission are told and if you are super-interested in the saga then read it. Having said that, i reconmend reading the other books to familiarise yourself because Coburn sometimes assumes the reader has read the other books.
Book Description
'Bravo Two Zero' was the code-name of the famous SAS operation: a classic story of bravery in the face of overwhelming odds. BRAVO TWO ZERO by patrol commander 'Andy McNab' became an international bestseller, as did the book by 'Chris Ryan' (THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY). Both men became millionaires. Three members of the patrol were killed. One, veteran sergeant Vince Phillips, was blamed in both books for a succession of mistakes. As Michael Asher reveals, the stories in BRAVO TWO ZERO and THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY grew considerably in the telling. Their heroic tales of taking out tanks with their rocket launchers, mowing down hundreds of Iraqi soldiers, the silent stabbing of the occasional sentry, were never mentioned at their post-war debriefings... In an investigation literally in the footsteps of the patrol, Michael Asher tells the true story.
Customer Reviews:
A welcome supplement to the B2-0 story.......2007-07-13
For a long time the books of Ryan and McNab were the only accounts of B2-0. Both books are great, but it is noteworthy that their accounts differ on some subjects; for example on the purpose of their mission(!), on how they got discovered and on the taxi hijack.
In this book Asher tries to find out the truth about B2-0. It is exciting, but also astonishing, to read what really happened. Especially McNabs book appears to be full of exaggerations and pure lies.
The author also tries to rehabilitate patrol member Vince who was accused of cowardice and appointed as the one responsible for the failure of the mission (mainly by Ryan).
In reaction Asher is blaming - especially - McNab for everything that went wrong during the mission. Unfortunately the author is doing this almost without any nuance in an irrational way. This makes his book less reliable.
But overall his book is absolutely worth reading. Ryan and McNab come up with different stories and at least one of them is not telling the true. This books confirms that the true story is different. Read it and pass judgement on what to believe and what not.
Highly Believable.......2007-06-13
The level of investigative effort Asher puts into this book is extreme. And yes, he seems the perfect character to uncover the truth too, being experienced in both the SAS and in Arabic culture, first hand. The book impresses the reader with an honesty missing from McNab's and Ryan's books, without condemning them for wanting to make a truckload of money from their stories.
A man with a grudge and a pen.......2007-03-27
It would be fair to say that the members of the patrol, those who lived, didn't agree on the events. But they didn't attack the other members of the patrol either, there were disagreements but nothing to get particularly upset about. Having read all three of the accounts written by members of the patrol I was never under the impression that they were destroying the characters of the dead, it takes a book like this to do that.
I'm sorry that Mr Asher is upset about how his friends died. But I don't think this does anything positive for their memory.
Shocking Eye Opener of the British SAS.......2006-03-08
A very interesting book that reveals shocking facts about the Bravo two Zero mission of the SAS. The author has carefully researched his finding and they make logical sense. It also puts to shame Andy Mc Nab and Chris Ryan (members of the mission) who wrote books about their self acclaimed bravery during the mission. I dont think that the author has gone through the trouble and the research to down play the SAS or the shameful recruits (Andy & Chris) but has done a commendable job in redeeming respect for late Sgt Vince Phillips (another member of the mission) who's name was disgraced by Andy & Chris in their books.
Convincing investigative work.......2006-03-07
I always thought that the B20 story was a little bit fictitious and Michael Asher puts forward a convincing logic to his story. If you read his findings you'll start to see holes appear in McNab's and Ryan's versions. By Asher's accounts, these men have already disgraced the regiment by bad-mouthing a fallen comrade and lied about/embellished the rest.
Asher goes back to the LUP, where the whole cock-up begins, and then traces the supposed journey all the way through to its conclusion by talking to local people who were present at the time. Unless the whole of the Iraqi people were there to spin a yarn, it's hard to deny that the truth is not what is in the other books. There is no disgrace in the truth.

Kickin in Iraq.......2002-11-08
Awesome. Imagine trapped 200 miles in Iraq, pursued by the enemy and no place to hide. "Mcnabb" captures the true essence of combat mission accomplishment, even when things don't go as planned. It's written to make the reader feel like he is the 9th member of the team. Highly recommended!

Better than fiction , reality in the fog of war. A heroic story .......2000-09-17
Bravo 20 was a British special forces unit sent deep into Iraq during Desert Storm. Compromised by faulty intelligence, faulty radios and an unexpected enemy force, they were forced to attempt an overland escape across Iraq in the middle of a war.
The author has done a great job of capturing the essence of the SAS, one of a few true elite combat units in the world. The fact that he can write the story in the first person adds to the tension. The adventure is a great story and a reality check for those who thought that the electronic age ended the fog of war. For those tired of a world where self esteem is taught in classes as a substitute for competence and performance this is the perfect cure.
I thought the book was much more infomative and dramatic than the movie.
Bravo Two Zero.......2000-04-27
Not a bad read at all... I enjoy a rough & tough action novel, fiction or factual, but this book was excellent, I found myself ingrossed in every turning page, would highly recommend this book along with such titles as 'The operators' & 'Bandit Country'... Keep it real!
OUTSTANDING STORY OF MEN IN WAR.......1999-09-29
A TRUE ACCOUNT OF SAS MEN DURING THE GULF WAR THE MISSION AND WHAT WENT WRONG TORTURE BY IRAQS SECRET POLICE SO MUCH FOR THE GENEVA CONVENTION DEEPLY SAD AND FUNNY LOOK OUT FOR A BBC VIDEO STARING SEAN BEAN
Most Amazing Thing I Have Read.......1999-08-19
The start is a bit dry, but soon the action starts and never stops until the last page. You will never put it down until you are done, guaranteed. You want to know who the real heroes are, just read this book and you'll see. Its the men, and sometimes women, who put there lives on the line like these guys did and sometimes have there families and health ruined because of it. Start reading and I promise you won't be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
A bit too long.......2003-08-20
This is a great book and my daughter likes it, even acting out the actions with me. However, we have to skip a few pages because it is a little too long for younger toddlers. The actions for the most part are things children can act out themselves, however there are a few pages that don't correspond well to human body parts (I haven't figured out yet how to light my tail). The book does a great job of getting my daughter up and moving and we have fun reading it together.
The bugs are also a nice touch. We have several Wee Sing books and I suspect as my daughter matures this one will replace Hokey Pokey as her favorite.
First Book My Son Loved.......2002-11-09
From the first time we opened it, this book has been a hit. My son loves to dance and do the "body-motions" described on each page. It has been a great tool to teach him where his nose is, how to blink "on purpose", etc. The pictures on each page are bright and engaging as well. It is by far the most worn-out book on the shelf...and he still regularly brings it to me to sing to him. I highly recommend this one!

Book Description
This book provides a review of the work in progress on the infrared spectral region of stars. The most important previous mission, the Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) was launched in 1983. Although it was only operating for one year, in that time it surveyed the whole sky for infrared emitters of many different kinds, providing a fundamental catalogue of thousands of objects. As a consequence of its success, a new mission to observe the infrared sky is being planned. The Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) is scheduled for a launch in May 1993. It should add substantially to our knowledge of the stars. Based on the proceedings of an international conference held in Montpellier, France, The Infrared Spectral Region of Stars provides an excellent forum for experts in the field to get together and evaluate the status of current knowledge and analyze instrumentation.
