4 out of 5 stars A good general guide.......2002-07-26

I appreciate the perspectives that the autor shares about aspects of parenting I may not have considered, particularly in the beginning when addressing several guidelines to keep in mind about all parenting challenges. If you're looking for a comprehensive guide to some particular problem, such as discipline, this probably isn't the book you want. However, if it's sitting on your bookshelf and you're in the middle of dealing with some issue, you can look to it as a resource that will point you in a good direction and to help you learn more.

3 out of 5 stars The Parenting Survival Kit : How to Make It Through the Pare.......2000-04-21

I saw this author on Oprah and thought she had some good ideas, so I rushed out to get her book. But the book was just a basic guide with not anything that you probably haven't tried before with your kids. What I did find useful was in the back of the book she has a resource guide dealing with specific items in the book that you may want to get further information about. Examples include: about four pages of webpage addresses for parenting issues as well as her recommended books, broken down by specific parenting issue.

      Book Description

In this dynamic book, theologian, futurist, and communications expert M. Rex Miller presents the innovative millennium matrix, that explains the way we store and distribute information changes our worldviews. Based on the author’s extensive research, The Millennium Matix explores the major paradigm and worldview shifts over the past two thousand years and maps them into an easily accessible chart summarizing the entire history of culture and church. From the oral culture of Jesus’ time to the print world of Gutenberg’s Bible to the broadcast era of television to the emerging digital culture, readers will see the impact of communication on worship and spirituality. Even more, the book then provides practical suggestions on how Christians can successfully navigate the rapid cultural changes that are occurring and that will continue to occur over the decades to come.

5 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for all leaders.......2006-04-04

Without over-generalizing Rex Miller explains many trends we see around us and helps us consider where they will lead. He helps us understand how we got where we are today in a way that makes me thankful to be alive at this turning point in human history. While it was written with church leaders in mind, thinkers and leaders of all organizations will benefit from this timely work.

4 out of 5 stars A Communication Chart for all Offices.......2005-08-19

What a helpful book on understanding our past, present, and future in communication. M. Rex Miller is clear and precise as to the breakdown of how we have learned from ancient times and how we will learn in the future. If you are worried about postmodern thought then this is the book to read because Miller shows how a new way of thinking and processing information can be very spiritually productive in a rapidly changing society and church.

Not just another book about postmodernism, "The Millenium Matrix" is an innovative look at human technology and how it influences culture, psychology, and ulimately faith. By exploring the major worldview shifts of the last 2,000 years, Rex Miller looks ahead to the future of Christianity and 21st century culture. Written in an engaging and simple style, "The Millenium Matrix" is quite the enlightening read.

Read it! It will do both your mind and soul good.
It isn't often I run across something like this. This is a book I wish I had written. That's the highest compliment a writer can pay to another author. Rex, my hat's off to you.

Seriously, Rex has done an absolutely marvelous job of bringing together a whole lot of complexity and laying it out in an understandable form. While his major focus is on how technology will impact how churches organizae themeselves, the lessons are equally applicable to just about any large formal organization in Western society.

It is certainly a must read for anyone trying to understand the diverse cultural mix we find oursleves living in today.

5 out of 5 stars Thriving on change.......2004-10-09

Rex Miller's excellent work reminds us that we are living in an age of extra-ordinary change. His work points to the challenges we face: what will we salvage from the past (in order to stay grounded in those things which are timeless) and what changes will we embrace (so that the church does not become irrelevant).

Every pastor who is willing to re-assess the effectiveness of his or her church should spend a few days with this book, and then spend a few years working out its implications. Miller asks us to forego programs and methods and think for ourselves--how refreshing!

This book is chockful of great monographs on gay and lesbian history. After a world-shaking introduction by all three editors, the book offers monographs from many periods in history. And not only is Western history profiled--there is also Asian gay history, and other non-European monographs as well. Everything is scholarly, and well-documented, and some of the information that you read in here is incredibly surprising! I am glad that a book like this finally exists, and, as a historian myself, know from this book that history is changing for the better by including the gay population and other minorities.

        Book Description

The looting of the Iraqi National Museum in April of 2003 provoked a world outcry at the loss of artifacts regarded as part of humanity's shared cultural patrimony. But though the losses were unprecedented in scale, the museum looting was hardly the first time that Iraqi heirlooms had been plundered or put to political uses. From the beginning of archaeology as a modern science in the nineteenth century, Europeans excavated and appropriated Iraqi antiquities as relics of the birth of Western civilization. Since Iraq was created in 1921, the modern state has used archaeology to forge a connection to the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia and/or Islamic empires and so build a sense of nationhood among Iraqis of differing religious traditions and ethnicities.

This book delves into the ways that archaeology and politics intertwined in Iraq during the British Mandate and the first years of nationhood before World War II. Magnus Bernhardsson begins with the work of British archaeologists who conducted extensive excavations in Iraq and sent their finds to the museums of Europe. He then traces how Iraqis' growing sense of nationhood led them to confront the British over antiquities law and the division of archaeological finds between Iraq and foreign excavators. He shows how Iraq's control over its archaeological patrimony was directly tied to the balance of political power and how it increased as power shifted to the Iraqi government. Finally he examines how Iraqi leaders, including Saddam Hussein, have used archaeology and history to legitimize the state and its political actions.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A quantum leap forward in the study of archaeology and nationalism.......2007-10-01

Alexander H. Joffe said that Archaeology is invariably politicized; in this revision of a Yale University dissertation, Bernhardsson shows that in Iraq the battle was primarily imperialist British military officers and diplomats versus nationalist Iraqi politicians and educators.

On the British side, many of the figures in this surprisingly conventional diplomatic and social history are familiar. Lord Curzon, and Winston Churchill, British Museum keeper Frederick Kenyon, and archaeologist H.R. Hall are shown deeply engaged in exchanging memos about the status of sites, collections, and excavation permits. The formidable romantic Gertrude Bell oversaw the new department of antiquities and interjected herself into all matters as part of her personal nation-building efforts.

On the Iraqi side, were those politicians and educators, not archaeologists, who exploited the past as it was being recovered during the golden age of Mesopotamian discovery (after World War I) to construct a variety of glorious pasts (primarily Assyrian, Babylonian, and Abbasid) that would stand as prelude to a precarious future. Archaeology served them as another means of creating a nation.

Iraqis correctly believed archaeology to be important to the British and saw it as another front to press for full political and cultural independence. Nationalists like Sati' al-Husri, director general of education (and later director of antiquities), newspaper editorialists, and politicians, including prime minister Rashid `Ali Gaylani, debated general policy and minutiae such as the end-of-season division of excavation finds. Their interpretations of archaeological finds and epochs followed larger trends, as pan-Arabism gave way to Iraqi particularism and then back to pan-Arabism, alternately privileging the equally artificial "Arab nation" or "Iraq."

Refreshingly, Edward Said and Orientalism barely appear in this well-researched volume. Although the introductory chapter is overlong and the discussion of Iraq ends somewhat abruptly in 1936, making the concluding chapter on the subsequent seventy years rather cursory, the volume takes a quantum leap forward in the study of archaeology and nationalism.

Description Many species of wild birds can become your friend and feed from your hand. In this engaging book, Al Martin explains the techniques he developed over more than fifty years to gain the trust of wild birds. Many of Al's visitors, young and old alike, experienced the thrill of birds landing on them to receive the food they had been trained to expect! And many readers of this book have recounted similar experiences. Al Martin also reveals many tricks and secrets to attract birds to your back yard. He shows how to build a birdbath the right way, how to build houses and feeders, and how to photograph birds and other wild creatures. Perhaps more enjoyable than anything are Al's anecdotes about the many friends he has made among the wild birds wherever he has lived.

Alfred Martin was something of an oddity. When he was ten years old he learned how to tame wild birds by trapping songbirds for the English bird trade. Later he found his way to Maine, built a house in the woods, fished, hunted, practised taxidermy, and cultivated the friendship of wild birds. Although he possessed a great fund of knowledge about birds, we learn that no great knowledge is required to teach a wild bird to feed out of our hand. The method Martin employed, and which
will work with many though not all birds, is simplicity itself and is clearly described in his book. What is required, then, is not knowledge but something far more difficult for us moderns - what is required is a shift of attitude, and a great deal of patience.

The intelligence, skills, and abilities of wild creatures are vastly underrated in our modern world. So puffed up are we with arrogance, so obsessed with the illusion that we are at the tip of a mythical 'evolutionary tree', so proud of our technical achievements and contemptuous of life forms which seem to get along without the aid of technology, it has become almost impossible for the average person to accept the fact that wild creatures, far from being wholly other than us, are our fellows. But for Martin birds were not so much animals as persons, and he emphasizes that without a genuine respect for their intelligence and talents, without fully accepting them as our fellows and equals, they in turn will never come to respect and trust us enough to come to our hand.

Martin's book is written in a rather rambling style and contains much else besides his method of hand-taming wild birds. His book is rich in personal anecdote, and in addition to the many good stories about his experiences with numerous species of birds and other animals there is also a great deal of information and practical advice for anyone who may be thinking of setting up a bird-feeding station to attract birds to their backyard. Among the many topics he covers are how to build a birdbath, how to build houses and feeders, how to select appropriate foods, how to care for injured birds, and so on.

Given modern society's strict insistence on the otherness of nature, however, Martin's most important lesson for us is his seemingly outrageous notion that birds are every bit as worthy and deserving of our respect and compassion as are our fellow humans. He assures us that once we begin to see wild birds, not so much as 'animals' but as little people in their own right, it won't be long before we experience the thrill of them landing on our hands to receive the gift of food. But before this can happen it is absolutely essential that we drop all feelings of superiority.

The prevailing ideology insists on our separateness from nature. But the idea that we are essentially different, being false, runs contrary to our nature and leads to
real suffering, the suffering of an alienation that issues in boredom. Martin points out that birds rightly consider man as their worst enemy. Terror is the form their suffering takes. Martin's achievement is to have given us a book which demonstrates how easily both the bird's terror and man's boredom can be replaced with real joy.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely a must for people trying to hand-feed wild birds.......2001-10-14

I am originally from the state of Maine where Mr. Martin hailed from. This book is terrific and not only gives insight on how to hand-feed wild birds, but also gives helpful information about them. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in birds.
And don't let Karen Seichevilch's review get you down; she just didn't have the patience to go through all the steps to get birds to feed from her hand. It took me 6 months to get a bird - a chickadee - to feed from my hand.

5 out of 5 stars Learning the language of birds..........2001-10-05

A wonderful journey shared by Mr. Martin... his personal story and guide to loving, caring for, and befriending birds. Much more than hand-taming. Stepping beyond backyard feeding, you become intimate with birds, and are invited to move among their world.

5 out of 5 stars Charming and informative!.......2001-08-06

A delightful glimpse of life in simpler times. I first discovered Al Martin's book in the early-eighties and totally enjoyed his down-to-earth style of writing. Humorous and heartwarming, even touching at times, this book is one of my favorites.

I've successfully used his techniques to hand-tame local Chickadees, Nuthatches, and Tufted Titmice. It required a bit of patience, and sticking to the rules, but the payoff was worth it. The sound of whirring wings and the feeling of an almost weightless creature fluttering to your finger is hard to imagine. But once you've done it, you'll never forget it.

Highly recommended for bird lovers everywhere!
