Rays of the Rising Sun, Volume 1: Japan's Asian Allies 1931-45, China and Manchukuo

Book Description
When the Japanese Empire went to war with the Allies in December 1941, it had already been fighting in China for 10 years. During that time it had conquered huge areas of China, and subjugated millions of people. The Japanese needed to control the Chinese population in these occupied territories, and for this reason they set up governments from amongst the leaders of the Chinese who were willing to co-operate with them. These so-called 'puppet' governments were designed to rule on behalf of the Japanese while firmly under their overall control. In turn, the puppet governments needed their own armed forces to help them maintain control over the populace and so they raised their own 'independent' armed forces. These puppet armies were large in number, reaching a total of well over 1 million before 1945. Although poorly-armed and equipped, these forces had an influence on the Japanese war effort through sheer numbers. The Chinese puppet soldiers ranged from the well-drilled and trained regular Army of the Last Emperor of China, Pu Yi, who ruled the newly-formed state of Manchukuo, 1932-45, to the irregular Mongol cavalry who served alongside Japanese troops in the 'secret war' waged in the Mongolian hinterlands.Customer Reviews:

Quiet Diplomacy in Action:The OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9041116516 |
Book Description
Quiet Diplomacy in Action is the first comprehensive account of the work of Max van der Stoel as High Commissioner on National Minorities for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). Because Van der Stoel worked discreetly, until now very little has been written about his activities. This book takes the reader behind the scenes to explain why the post of High Commissioner was created, what his mandate is, how he worked in practice, and what recurrent themes and issues he encountered. Quiet Diplomacy in Action also gives a detailed summary of the High Commissioner's activities in the more than fifteen countries that he was involved with between 1993 and 2001. Major documents relating to national minorities in the OSCE context are included in an annex. As Michael Ignatieff writes in the Foreword: `Everyone talks about conflict prevention. One of the few senior figures that actually does it is the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities'. This book, written in co-operation with Mr. Van der Stoel, gives a unique insight into conflict prevention, minority rights, and the challenge of resolving inter-ethnic tensions. It should be considered a primary resource for all those interested in these subjects.

How many feds does it take to change a light bulb?.......2000-07-28
During the 1970's, the governments of Canada and the U.S. spent millions of dollars setting up a sting operation that would bust wildlife smugglers and blow the lid of the illegal international trade in valuable falcons. Rare, and protected, North American birds were supposedly stolen from the wild and shipped to wealthy Arabs. By the time this ended, many law-abiding, licensed falconers had been investigated, their reputations put on the line, and, in some cases, their (legal) breeding projects imperiled. But the smuggling ring itself was never exposed, because, when all was said and done, it never existed. Only a few sleazy characters were involved, people with tenuous ties to the falconry community who nonetheless cast (no pun intended) all falconers in a bad light.
This book is a good, interesting read--whether it includes all the data or not--and it is worth noting that a high-profile issue (like smuggling falcons) can eat up a lot of tax dollars and can also affect people who are not even involved in the alleged activity. The bad guys in this book are a couple of sleazy characters: one, a falconer who is trying to cut a deal on separate charges and offers to set up a sting, and the other, a greedy yuppie-type who just wants to get rich quick, but can't quite get it together. But the real villain is the bureaucracy that grinds along and chews up everything in its path. Some of the wildlife officers who had always played fair (protecting natural resources and falconers alike) are even harmed.
Operation Falcon's legacy to the sport is a residual paranoia and suspicion of non-falconers. This concern is, all too often, legitimate. It's too bad, because falconers have made significant contributions to the welfare of our wild raptors, particularly in the huge role falconers played in the peregrine's recovery.
Every falconer who began practicing the sport after Operation Falcon has heard all the rumors, but the answers remain elusive. This book may not have all the answers, but it fills in a lot of the blanks.

Van Giesen's characters drive the suspense-driven plot.......2003-02-07
"'It wasn't a falconer, I'm tellin' you. There are plenty of other people around who hated Pederson's guts. The man had it comin' and goin'.' He climbed down from the fence. 'You give my best to March. Goodness is a rough trail, especially where he is. And don't forget to say hello to that girlfriend of his, Kate.' He grinned. 'Now there's a woman with spirit. She can park her boots under my bed anytime she wants to.'"
Van Giesen moves Neil and her mysterious love, the Kid, from Albuquerque: where if the hot sauce isn't burning your throat it has no taste; to the dangerous regions of Montana, where the greatest danger can be anything from a snowstorm that catches the birders unaware; to the horrible traps used on beautiful, unsuspecting, and diminishing animals for profit; to the people themselves, whose motives are hidden by the wide-open skies and mountains. Neil tries to adjust as she sleuths for March, the wrongfully accused ranger. Van Giesen's characters drive the suspense-driven plot; at the same time throwing in quirks of Neil's which make her all the more human. Neil is a lovable neurotic: from her smoking and drinking habits, to her "inappropriate" relationship to the Kid, to her turning her nose up at anything that remotely resembles food. The reader pictures an Ally McBeal galloping around the hillsides with heart and clothes flapping. But somewhere she finds the strength to get the job done, before she resumes her nonconformist lifestyle. Raptor is a delight, and Neil does it her own way.
A very popular mystery writer from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Judith Van Gieson is an author who has a plethora of information on the web, and enough name recognition so that her author bio simply includes the names of some of the catalog of mysteries she has written, including: North Of The Border, Confidence Woman, and Vanishing Point. Book Description
A magnificent gyrfalcon, soaring in the air over rocky cliffs, is winged by a hunter and falls to earth wounded. Rescued and taken to a nearby farmhouse, the bird will irrevocably change the lives of her savior, Michael Somers, and the woman and child Somers comes to love.Somers has returned after many years to his hometown of Little River Bend to unlock the secrets from his own past that almost drove him to destroy his family in one night of irrational violence. Released from treatment but shunned by his neighbors, Somers is determined to heal the bird, whom he has named Cully, and release her to freedom. Watching from afar as Somers coaxes the bird to fly is a deeply troubled little boy, Jamie Baker. Jamie has lost the power of speech after witnessing his father's death in a hunting accident, and his mother, Susan, yearns to free her child from his self-made prison. Slowly, a tender emotional bond forms between the desperately lonely child, his mother, and the strange man who seems able to heal. But soon they find themselves in terrible danger as the hunter who tried to kill Cully stalks her again--and plans to wreak vengeance on Somers.
This is an extraordinarily moving novel about passion, heartbreak, and the possibility of redemption.

Excellent Novel.......2002-05-05
A must-read for animal lovers.......2000-12-12
The downside of this novel is that it can get arduously long at times, the story moving without a sense of direction and focusing on the unimportant aspects of the people's daily lives, just as waking up and eating breakfast. It is also felt that the author did not deal adequately with Micheal's mental breakdown; the reasons given sometimes read like a lame excuse. Jamie's refusal to speak also seems unbelievable. All in all, the author just only skim the surface and did not probe deeper into the characters' inner beings, leaving the readers thirsty for more.
The upside of this novel is definitely that of the snow falcon. The author's descriptions of the falcon flying and soaring in the air and the surrounding landscape were lyrical and beautiful. The relationship between Micheal and Cully gives an interesting perspective into the communication and understanding between man and beast and furthermore, it is very touching. Readers were also given a peep into the world of falconry and introduced to the jargon used.
To summarise, this book is good for light reading and a must-read for all animal lovers; it will jolt the tears out of them.
