Customer Reviews:
Too much for younger kids, too simple for older kids........2004-01-05
This was a pretty good book - I almost gave it 4 stars. The book has some useful info and the advice is sound (based on other 1st aid books I've read), so I don't think it would be a waste of anyone's money. The stated reading level is 9-12 but I felt it was a little too ambitious for most kids under 12 and too simple for kids over 12. I read this book to my 7 year old and most of it was over her head and had too many "steps". MY 12 year old also read it and she too thought there were too many "steps" in the instructions on what to do in an emergency. The sections in each chapter called "GET HELP!" were confusing to both kids. If you're looking for a Safety/1st Aid book for someone under 12 I would highly recommend "The Safety Book for Active Kids" (also sold by Amazon). If the reader is someone over 12 then a Red Cross First Aid Course and an adult first aid manual might be a better use of your money.
The Kids' Guide to First Aid.......2002-03-19
This book is perfect for kids and not bad for adults either. It is very clearly written and has outstanding illustrations. The health strategies and tips provided are done in the context of prevention... But things happen, accidents occur, kids get hurt. This book helps you and your children learn/know what to do in these situations. A fun, interesting, read.
You are never to young to learn!.......2002-03-09
I have 2 young children (ages 5 and 9 yrs old) myself and helping them understand what happens to their bodies when they hurt themselves is tough to do. Not to mention what to do when they are injured. Sometimes it is more "scared about the unknown" than anything. This book really helps the child research and learn how their bodies tell them when they are hurt and how to take care of the simpler injuries themselves. Plus, the format of the book draws them into learning about their bodies before an injury occurs. The illustrations are funny and help drive the points home in a kids kind of way. Great book and my daughter is already trying out the different first aid techniques in advance. Teach the child and you have taught the adult forever!

Book Description
This simple first aid book helps kids think wisely in an emergency. Well illustrated and easy to understand, it describes accident situations that children are likely to find themselves in. The paramedic/teacher author team provides step-by-step directions for handling such common problems as cuts, bloody noses, stings, electric shock and burns.
One of our most popular children's books, "Kids to the Rescue!" opens with a note for parents, explaining how children can practice the first aid techniques. It concludes with a first aid quiz and instructions on calling 9-1-1 and other emergency numbers. The back cover has an index so kids can easily find the page of instructions they need.
Expanded and revised to cover HIV-safety.
Selected by SRA/McGraw-Hill for its fourth grade reading curriculum and praised in "School Library Journal," "The Horn Book," homeschooling and parenting publications.
Customer Reviews:
Very superficial - better selections available........2004-01-07
This book would be better than having no first aid book or reference at all - but, not much better. Topics covered include: nose bleed, something in eye, bleeding, broken bones, dog and snake bite, poisoning, insect sting, chemical burn in eye, choking, electric shock, burns, unconsciousness, clothes on fire, and dialing 911. There is also a quiz in the back. The number of topics covered are OK, but the information is often incomplete. Three examples: 1) The section on bee stings omits any discussion on finding and removing the bee's stinger without accidentally getting more bee venom in the wound. 2) The section on dog bites omits any information on how to avoid getting bitten. 3) The section on broken bones has a grand total of 53 words of advice. In fact most sections of the book fail to mention ways to avoid injury, or methods of care that are included in other children's 1st aid books. Although this book is inexpensive - I feel it is not a good buy. For a little more money I highly recomend "The Safety Book for Active Kids", which is sold by Amazon.
"Kids to the Rescue" is a book for learning........1999-07-26
I think that kids my age (7)should read this book. If they have a frisky little sister like me, they're going to babysit her soon and they will need to know these things.

Get back in print!.......2004-09-12
This is an incredible and easy to read resource on possible future inventions, jobs, technologies, houses, types of living structures (e.g., living houses, deep underground, floating cities, flying cities, space farms), space travel, how to live a more natural lifestyle, the type which might come back into vogue in the future, recycling, future languages, how to achieve world peace, you name it. It's for anyone who's interested in how life might be like in the future, whether you want the information for a story, book, or article you're writing or you're just interested in the information for its own sake. I know it got me fascinated enough to read other books on this very subject, and upset that we haven't yet got the majority of the things described, like the terraforming of Mars and the Moon, flying cities, and houses made entirely out of things like soda bottles and empty cartons of bleach. While it's still available in good libraries, it really needs to get back in print and to be updated; things have changed a lot since 1982!
An excellent book for kids, and all interested in the future.......1997-10-22
This is a fascinating book that outlines a myriad of different technologies and scenarios about the future. From housing, to food, longevity research, floating cities, robotics, space-travel, and colonization.
I've shown this to various futurist friends, and they all agree: This book should be re-published, and revised to include the latest in technological advances. It belongs on the shelf of every child, and anyone else who's concerned about the future.
Find a copy, if you can. It's great!

Best Kids CPR Book Available!.......2004-02-12
Craig Jones does a wonderful job of writing and illustrating this book. There need to be more activities these days that parents and kids can do together, and this is one of them. These books get kids interested in learning, and excited about it! As a bonus, you and your child can learn animal CPR, in the unlikely event anything happens to your beloved "family member." A recommended book for all!

Dr. Dan The Bandage Man.......2007-01-10
Loved this book as a child and purchased it for my granddaughters.
ew.......2006-12-14
...not only sexist, weirdly ominous with the injuries, and sister's panties are showing, but most annoyingly its a rather long adverstisement for band-aids (early product placement for children?). I'm glad I don't live in the 50s, or whatever this is depicting.
I loved this book as a child.......2006-06-30
This was one of my favorite childhood books, so I was delighted to see it being sold again. After I had used the bandages enclosed, I begged my mother to give me more to keep the book like new. Over and over and over. Perfect for the beginning reader.
Very neat book, a trip back in time!.......2006-06-17
Okay, for all you new moms out there, this is a great book for a trip back in time. Back when boys actually took real guns to school to trade or sell to their friends (hey, they even went on the school bus!) when people wouldn't think of hurting someone else, not the mayhem we have today. They also played as if they were cowboys and played with their sisters as well. Don't look at this book like you would today. Why the reviewers below are so sarcastic about it is beyond me. Today, we have books about a farting dog and no one raises an eyebrow over that title, but you will if someone is playing cowboys with pretend guns. Go figure! Anyway, this is an awesome book. It shows a very caring young man who helps his family after his mother helps him with his finger injury. Dan then in turn, helps each of his other family members when they get a cut or scratch. Even the dog wants one! It's very loved in this house and is quite refreshing to see a simpler time once more. And, the lawnmower shown in the book is the kind that were used before they had motors. There's something interesting to talk about too! Highly recommend!
An emotional roller coaster!.......2006-04-18
Barely two pages into this impassioned tome young Dan suffers a injury that might scare a lesser child for life. Fortunately for Dan's (and the reader's) sake the lad's mother is skilled in the art of "First Aid" and manages to keep a bad situation from spiralling out of control.
Other harrowing episodes follow including a run-away wagon and a nearly criminally negligent lawnmower operator but Dan saves the day each time, having remembered the lessons his mother taught him earlier on in the story.

Book Description
An expert in Chinese Warfare, best-selling author Ralph Sawyer, offers a compelling account of the development of incendiary and aquatic warfare tactics in ancient China as pivotal elements in turning the tides of battle.
China's official histories are replete with intriguing examples of incendiary and aquatic warfare being employed (particularly by the outnumbered) in pivotal roles to turn the tide of battle. In his new book Fire and Water, best-selling author Ralph Sawyer traces the dynamic evolution and development of incendiary warfare in ancient China, from antiquity through the introduction of true gunpowder weapons, including cannon and muskets. Discussing both use and techniques, the book similarly unfolds the evolution of aquatic methodology, emphasizing the strong interconnection between the two with the inception of riverine combat. Fundamentally based upon an examination of the Chinese military writings, Sawyer examines and recounts the most important clashes and epochal conflicts in which these dramatic tactics were employed over the centuries. Although not a naval history, Sawyer does examine the extensive employment of incendiary attacks in naval conflict and explores the means for overcoming riverine obstacles, such as floating bridges.
Customer Reviews:
In-depth and exhaustively researched.......2004-05-23
This is everything you've ever wanted to know about how fire and water (mostly fire) was used in warfare in ancient China. How much could be said about it? Oh man... a lot. The level of detail in this book is astounding. Culling information from seemingly hundreds of ancient Chinese texts, Sawyer (who is best known for his best-selling translation of Sun-Tzu's Art of War) gives an in-depth play-by-play account of thousands of years of tribal battles.
The stories behind the creative implementations of the elements themselves are fascinating; even in this age of hi-tech gizmo warfare, there are new tricks I've learned from this book-and they were done thousands of years ago! But the actual historical background is scholarly and detailed to the point of academic overload, and it could probably only be followed (let alone remembered) by the most passionate of Sinophiles.
An Amazing Scholarly Piece.......2004-02-23
As a huge fan of military history, I found this book a fascinating, well written, read. The illustrations (taken from ancient chinese texts) are not florid and are there to enhance the text, the huo-shen (spirit fire) looked extremely deadly.

Book Description
The stars that comprise a halo around our Galaxy are intriguing; they have abundances of elements that suggest they are old. The properties of these "hot stars" and similar stars in other galaxies challenge the current, well-established theory of stellar evolution in many ways. In this book, experts contribute up-to-date and comprehensive reviews of the major topics in the field. They study the collective properties of these stars that provide important revelations for many areas of astrophysics--including how our Galaxy was formed. The contributors also reveal the exciting renaissance occurring in their studies owing to important new observations with the Hubble Space Telescope and ASTRO1 and to techniques recently developed for ground-based observations. Advances in computers have also recently led to a far more detailed and complete theoretical understanding of stellar evolution. This book will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in astronomy and astrophysics.
