    Book Description

Based on groundbreaking research, building on Search Institute's proven framework of developmental assests-good things all children need in their lives-this book is a year's worth of insights, inspiration, and practical tips for parents, teachers, and caregivers.

Using the popular daily readings format, each entry begins with a thought-provoking quotation related to a particular assest. A brief essay presents information about child development, advice, anecdotes, ideas to consider, or activities to try. A "Today" statement suggests an action for the day.

The readings are short and simple; it only takes a moment or two to learn a new way to build social skills, positive values, boundaries and expectations, family support, and more. Every day, you'll be giving young children the support they need to stay on the right path.

If you want to create a positive foundation for the young children in your life, this book is for you.

    Book Description

Jane's At the Controls is a new series providing a 'hands-on' briefing of what it is like to fly and fight in modern combat aircraft. The MiG-29 was introduced by the Soviet air-force just as the Warsaw Pact began to break up. Armed with a new generation of air-to-air missiles and capable of astonishing maneuvers that can give it to the edge against most modern interceptors, the MiG-29 remains one of the best fighter aircraft in the world today.

Simply put, if you are researching this airplane, this book is the LAST WORD on this model. Beautifuly written and with in-depth information and loaded with rare photos.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book on the capabilities of the MiG-29........2001-10-02

A true masterpiece. It mainly depicts how the MiG-29 would have fought during the Cold War.I say that because the author seems to assume that pilot training is as it was during the 16th Air Army heydays. But since the book focus on the aircraft and not the air force which operate it, it's easily forgiven.

I have no complaints about this book.Magnificent photos, genuine analysis with no bias towards the russian aircraft or its western counterparts.Truly it's the most honest analysis of the MiG-29 I have yet seen.Well worth the price.Be aware though that it's not a reference book on the MiG-29 but more like an article on the capabilities of the Fulcrum.Look for Yefim Gordon's book for the former.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent buy!.......2000-04-27

This is a wonderful book and a must have for every aviation fanatic. The highlights according to me are the amazing photographs and drawings which bring the Fulcrum to life as never before. The other part that I loved was the reliance on first hand reports by pilots who have flown the Fulcrum or flown against it.

The only niggle (which explains the 4 stars), is the lack of hard data, especially comparing the Fulcrum to other fighters eg. F-16. For example, we read that the Fulcrum's turn rate is better, but in the BVR arena, at least with R-27s, it is at a disadvantage- what would have helped are a few simple charts comparing the Fulcrum with contemporary fighters like the F-16, F-18 and Mirage 2000 on these key parameters...for a die hard aviation fan, hard numbers are a must...so they can draw their own conclusions..too much text can be fluff at times.

4 out of 5 stars Buy it for the photography.......2000-03-01

The photography of Artur Sarkisyan makes this book well worth the money. He brings out the aesthetic potential of this aircraft, depicting it in just about every position, even straight and level. It's a shame that such a good-looking machine is, in fact, a weapon of war. But don't let that stop you from enjoying Mr. Sarkisyan's work.

4 out of 5 stars The best introduction to the MIG 29 yet.......1999-12-03

This is a well organized book, lavishly illustrated with photos. The writer Jon Lake describes the Soviet equivalent of the F16 with an enthusiasm that makes this book a joy to read. The only problem i could find is that hard techinical data (as one often expects from any publication bearing the famous "Jane" name) is lacking. If these were present, i'd have rated it a 5-star. It would still make a terrific gift for all except the hard-core fans of aviation. As an aside, I can personally vouch for the accuracy of the reporting, having flown the MIG-29 with the Royal Malaysian Air Force.

      5 out of 5 stars Priceless Memories.......2007-06-29

I did not buy this book for the recipes. I thought, and was correct, that perhaps this book might offer photographs of the Royal Family I had never seen in print before. The story of how this book came about is a wonderful story by itself. Read it and find out who the man was behind it's creation. There are private photos of the Queen Mother, the Queen, and a young Prince Charles that are ready for framing. And that is what I plan on doing this weekend. While I must purchase another copy to keep, I am going through my copy to remove the wonderful shots and frame them. My kitchen is decorated with numerous photos of the Royal Family. And yes, I have Union Jack rugs on the floors as well. The recipes are wonderful, but the photographs and stories are worth buying the book for. If you are an Anglophile as I am, or a huge fan of the Royals, this is the book for you.

      4 out of 5 stars Buckingham Palace, a review.......2007-10-10

I found the book to be very informative, good selection of pictures. It was interesting to compare the different rooms as they were changed from Queen Victoria through Queen Elizabeth. It lacks pictures and descriptions of the rooms in the new wing of the palace, the one facing the Victoria Monument. I do recommend this book, though, I wish it had more pictures of other rooms.

      4 out of 5 stars BUCKINGHAM PALACE.......2006-10-20

A nice book on one of the most recognizable if not prettiest palace in the world. The text is highly informative and the images are well presented. Buckingham Palace's exterior style is not exactly aweinspiring, it looks like a government building, like the treasury or department of state, it's really the interiors that make this place special. It's a high Georgian tour de force, the interiors are quite simply spectacular; they are elegant and have elan. If you have any interest in the Windsor's or love Georgian style then i highly recommend this book, if you have never seen the interior of this building, you will be pleasantly surprised.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful page turner!.......2005-12-07

This is by far the best of the three-book series. (the other two being Death at Sandringham House and Death at Windsor Castle) I read it in three hours; I just could not put it down! The story is fast-paced, well-written, and combined with the author's uncanny attention to detail in terms of the rooms of Buckingham Palace, this book makes you feel as though you're right there with Jane and the Queen, trying to solve the mystery.

The book is humorous, full of that delightful British slang and cheekiness. It's also heart-pounding towards the end, when Jane has an *epiphany* (you'll know what I mean when you read the book) and she has to find the Queen.

              Well done, C.C. Benison!

5 out of 5 stars Murder Most Royal.......2002-09-26

This novel, along with its sequels, are among the very few mystery novels that I enjoy reading over and over. Perhaps this is because of the fresh, friendly voice of the narrator, Jane Bee, a smart and lively young woman from Prince Edward Island, who, while visiting Great Britain, happens into a housemaid position at Buckingham Palace, and very quickly stumbles (literally) upon a dead body, right at Her Majesty's sensible-shoe-clad feet...And perhaps it's because of the writing skills of C.C. Benison, who gives the reader the feeling of being a Palace insider, with all the good gossip, the pet names for the Royals, the unmentionable scourge of the corgis, even the secret of what the Queen actually keeps in her purse...Really excellent good fun, and I can only say that I wish that there were more of them to read and re-read and recommend.

              5 out of 5 stars What Fun!.......2002-04-24

I myself am a monarchist, so I was already excited about a book that gives Her Majesty the Queen some credit for being a human being as well as the Sovereign.
And what a fun book it is! Jane Bee is a very likeable character, which is always important. I liked the way she had to keep correcting people that she was Canadian, not American, and the no-nonsense way she handled things. I liked the behind-the-scenes look at the Palace's inner workings (whether totally true or not-don't you wonder if HM reads these??!)
All in all, the mystery was exciting and kept me guessing, the characters were very well drawn, and I can't wait to get the next one!

5 out of 5 stars Murder Most Royal.... - You can't put it down.......2000-04-30

Jane Bee came to Europe for adventure, only to end up with the job is a lifetime--housemaid at Buckingham Palace. Now her greatest challenge is removing gum from State Room carpets--until she comes across a nasty accident right outside the Royal Apartments. The Queen herself has--literally--stumbled across the dead body of Jane's good friend, footman and aspiring actor Robin Tukes, in what appears to be a suicide. But why would handsome, impetuous Robin, having just toasted his engagement to a gorgeous housemaid, not to mention his impending fatherhood, want to die? Buck House buzzes, but only Jane--and the Royal Personage known belowstairs as "Mother"--suspects foul play. At Her Majesty's behest, Jane launches a discreet inquiry that takes her from Servants' Hall to the highest echelons of the Palace. Yet the more Jane uncovers, the more clear it becomes that this latest royal scandal is a real killer.

              5 out of 5 stars A Delightful Romp!.......2000-03-13

Canadian Jane Bee is a housemaid in Buckingham Palace, and her friend and fellow Canadian, Robin Tukes dies under mysterious circumstances. Everyone thinks that Robin has committed suicide, except for Jane and Her Majesty the Queen. The Queen decides to have lowly housemaid, Jane keep her ears and eyes open to discover the truth about Robins's death. This of course leads to some interesting and possibly dangerous situations for our plucky heroine.

This is a delightful book. Author Benison has created an enjoyable cast of characters and an engaging mystery. Definitely in the tradition of Agatha Christie, this book will keep you entertained and turning the pages to find out what happens next.

This book is wonderfully funny and full of life. It really shows the colourful characters that exist in Cape Town and their amazing community spirit. In the face of immense adversity the characters in this book keep their infectious sense of humour and light hearted outlook on life. If you have lived in Cape Town be prepared for a roller coaster ride of emotions and memories!

4 out of 5 stars "End of an Era: The Destruction of District Six".......2000-07-08

Rive chronicles the establishment of two houses in District Six, Cape Town. Rive recreates the neighborhood of his youth in which con artists, prostitutes and throw-aways of apartheid South Africa survive and thrive despite poverty and racism. Each vignette, no matter how criminally absurd, captures the liveliness and sense of community found in District Six during its heyday.

Born Jean Rabin in France, John James Audubon made a name for himself in the New World almost in spite of himself. A failure at business, a footloose and difficult man, he perpetually fought off poverty to establish himself as a painter of America's fabulously varied wildlife. (To support himself while gathering the materials for his famous Birds of America, he painted portraits of New Orleans society ladies.) In this thoroughly researched and well-written biography, Shirley Streshinsky supplies little-known details about Audubon's early years and later tribulations, which were rewarded late in his life by widespread fame and the recognition of his singular contributions to early American science.

5 out of 5 stars Birdman of the 1800's.......2006-07-20

The author did alot of research on the subject and it shows in a great book on the life of James Audubon. It is a great story of American life in the early 1800's and Europe. The hardships this family went through to publish one of the worlds greatest books on birds. The love and support that a wife gave her husband and his sons that followed in his footsteps.

5 out of 5 stars ..an Albatross is funniest bird-see why--.......2001-03-20

For latest on ornithology- see her 8 page article in Apr. 2001 American Heritage Magazine...Shirley visited birds on Midway Island, now a refuge in Pacific. On the Wings of Victory..also memorial to sea battle won by US Navy.

4 out of 5 stars enjoyable as a story even for the non bird-lover.......2000-09-23

I agree that this book is indeed over-written and reads at time like a class assignment; the author simply ticking off facts without much coherent thesis. However, this recital does bring off a charming story interesting enough to hold the attention of the casual historian with only a passing interest in wildlife. For anyone wishing to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the American wilderness and the struggles of the early settlers, it is a pleasure. Just skip over the boring bits!

3 out of 5 stars A Book that Sould Have Been Better.......2000-07-09

Shirley Streshinsky, the author of "Audubon," makes several mistakes common to authors, especially authors of biographies. A good editor at The University of Georgia Press could have and should have helped the author overcome these problems.

The book--over 400 pages--is over-written. It would have been far more interesting and readable if the manuscript had been trimmed by a third. The author, having done extensive research to gather hard-won facts, succumbed to the comon temptation of using facts because she had them.

The result is that what should be the theme and focus of the book is often buried in tedious and repetitious detail about travel plans, for example.

Here is a man of amazing genius. Able to things with his pastels and paints and pens that no one has ever been able to match. A facinating, driven man. Arrogant. Egotistical. Tireless. Obsessed. Willing to suffer every hardship, and sacrifice himself, his wife and sons, financial security, friendships his comfort and health--everything to achieve the single-minded purpose of producing the best, most complete pictures and words about America's birds.

All of this is covered in this book, but it is often buried under a so much minutia that the reader may lose focus of this brilliant man who accomplished so much with so little.

Another mistake the author and publisher make is to assume the reader has knowledge which the average reader may or may not have. Much of the book is about Audubon's extensive travels in the U.S. and Europe to sell subscriptions. But as near as I can tell from my careful reading, we are never told exactly what it is Audubon is selling subscriptions to.

We are told repeatedly about double-elephant folios, apparetly an over-sized paper for presenting Audubons's illustrations, but nowhere is a double-elephant filio described or defined.

Same goes for subscriptions to "the new octavo edition." What exactly is an octavo edition?

There is lots of discussion of the work of engravers, colorists, lithographers. But specifically what are these craftsmen doing? We are never told exactly. Whatever it is it apparently involves dozens of craftsmen working full time for years. Are they copying by hand Audubon's drawings onto metal plates? If so, how much of what we see is the faithful work of Audubon, and how much the art of engravers, colorists, lithographers?

You had better have a good memory for names as you read this book, or else makes notes as each of the dozens of new characters in the story are introduced. People brought into the story early often appear later with no reminders of who it is being talked about. The author remembers; the readers may not.

There is a section of illustrations in the book, all in black and white, all but one of people and places. Amazingly there is only one example of Audubon's brilliant artwork--a black and white sketch, unquestionably originally in color, of "A Robin Perched on a Mossy Stone." How can a book be presented about Audubon without including color examples of his brilliant work?

I was seriously disappointed by this book.

                5 out of 5 stars Birder's delight.......1997-07-19

Reading this book is like living along side this great, self-made naturalist during his many ups and downs. Credit the author for taking us through his struggling ``mercantile'' years before he learned of his purpose. We meet the wife, Lucy, in full. We suffer her angst while he's off in Europe making a future. Any bird watcher naturally will be thrilled by the story but so too would any lover of the American dream, which is what Audubon lived. The one drawback was the lack of any of his portfolio drawings. Telling of the creation of Audubon's ``Birds of America'' without showing even a snippet of his magnificant drawings is almost evil. If this book is hard to find, it's well worth the search
