3 out of 5 stars I expected better from Hunnisett.......1998-10-08

I already own and love "Period Costume for Stage & Screen, 1500-1800 Vol 1," so I rushed right out and bought this book as soon as it came out. I was very disappointed.

It is a decent book, especially for theater use, but it lacks the excellent understanding of period cut displayed the 1500-1800 book. I expected mush more from Hunnisett.

There are many poorly-drawn illustrations which manage to get the point across, but they do not always show what is really in the paintings they purport to be redrawn from. No explanations are given for some of her more unusual cutting decsions, such as the use of big obvious darts on 15th cent. bodices. In other cases, period garments are pictured next to pattern layouts that could never produce anything resembling them-- almost as bad as Hill & Bucknell. None of the example costumes shown in the book are actually intended as authentic-looking medieval dresses-- all are more or less fantasy-inspired.

If you are looking for a general book on how to make pseudo-medieval fantasy costumes (that look like tie-dyed nightgowns), perhaps for children's theater, this is an okay book, but not great-- nothing inspiring here. If you are looking for a book showing an expert cutter's conjectures on period cut to use as a starting point for developing an authentic-looking costume, either for theatrical or historical reenactment use, don't bother with this one except to check the one page bibliography in the back, and the single useful one page spread of 15th cent Italian sleeves. The rest is nothing special at all. Like so many of these books, you must take everything she shows you with a big grain of salt.

On the other hand, I cannot recommend "Period Costume for Stage & Screen, 1500-1800 Vol 1" highly enough.

Book Description

This is the original classic work by one of America's most respected modern military historians. It is a thrilling account of six extraordinary days in June 1967 when Israel embarked on a bold, risky war of national survival-and won!

Hammel decisively disproves the myth that Israel's stunning victory was a "miracle" or a "fluke" and reveals how a tiny nation was able to, in secret, develop a First-World military force that has become the envy of nations around the world.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Awkward Israeli OohRa tilt.......2005-12-07

I will keep this short. The only necessary chapter to read is on the Zahal. the IDF. Much of the book depends on silly, childish praise for the realistically superior Israeli Force. So much so that it makes for pedantic reading. I do not recommend.

5 out of 5 stars pretty comprehensive review of the war.......2003-07-02

The six days war is a pivital event in Middle East Politics after the second world war. Hammel provides an excellent detailed account of the war in six days in june.

Hammel splits the book into seven sections. The first is the road to war and gives a background into the origins in the conflict. Part two is entitled Zahal focusing on the Israel Defense Force. Countdown to War is part three and focuses on other armies like those of Egypt and Syria and the days leading up to the war. Part 4 deals with the war in the Sinai peninsula. Part 5 deals with Jerusalem. Parts six and seven deal with two of the most important issues of the war, the west bank and golan heights respectfully for these along with the gaza strip are a source for continuing conflict.

There are plenty of maps that help illustrate the history of the war. In addition, order of battle contains information on the different Israeli commands and forces involved.

5 out of 5 stars Tactical Retelling of 1967 Six Day War.......2003-06-23

Hammel's "Six Days of War" is one of the best secondary sources available regarding the 1967 Six-Day War. It is written in a popular format rather than an academic research format although it does have extensive references and a large bibliography. The book is clearly intended for popular consumption rather than discussion of university academics. Hammel is a well-known military writer and has extensively written about WWII although this is his first foray into the volatile military environment of the Middle East.

Many read this book expecting a full account of the war including every aspect manageable: political, economic, military, etc. Hammel's specialty is military history from the tactical perspective (that is to say devoid of all but the most important political and economic factors) and this book is no exception. Hammel focuses very tightly upon analysis and retelling of the battles that occurred and the military factors that led
to them. This tendency leads Hammel to discuss the many terrorist intrusions into Israel that the Israeli military was forced to lean how to counter (a factor that contributed greatly to the effectiveness and readiness of the Israeli military), but to leave out much of the bitter inter-Arab politics preceding the 1967 Six Day War.

The book lacks footnotes, but has an excellent bibliography, which includes not only books, but periodicals and special studies. An additional bonus is a complete Order of battle for the Israeli, Egyptian, Jordanian, and Syrian forces of the 1967 Six Day War.

I definitely prefer this well-written book to but A.J. Barker's "The Arab-Israeli Wars," which shows a unsettling bias towards the Arab side of the conflict.

I highly recommend this excellent account of the 1967 Six Day War.

In addition, I recommend the 2002 "Six Days of War: June 1967 and the Making of the Modern Middle East" by Michael B. Oren. This book has the most up-to-date research, extensive reference, and is bound to be regarding as a classic for historians regarding the Six Day War. As much as I've characterized Hammel's "Six Days of War" as the best secondary source popular history of the war, Oren's "Six Days of War: June 1967 and the Making of the Modern Middle East" functions as the best secondary source academic reference of the war.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Coverage Of A Vital Conflict........2002-05-30

Well written, informative account of the Six Day War and the events preceding it.

Cross border incursions into Israeli territory by Palestinian terrorists sponsored and supported by neighbouring Arab nations are outlined in some detail. The situation is very similar to that of today.

The author documents the UN situation and attitude in relation to these terrorist attacks. The UN response was muted even then.

The author documents the vastly outnumbered Israeli forces in comparison to their Arab counterparts and how the latter were supplemented by Iraqi and other Arab forces all eager to be part of the eradication of the Jewish state.

This is a must read for anyone interested in this ongoing conflict. Without the pre-emptive strike against Egyptian air power, the vastly outnumbered Israeli forces would have had their work cut out to survive a co-ordinated strike by the surrounding Arab nations. Unless you actually read the accounts from the time and the facts that then existed, it is easily to be mislead. The author has done a fine job here.

Interesting is the account of the Jordanian involvement, without which Israel clearly had no intent in re-taking the 'West Bank' (Judea & Samaria) or the Eastern section of Jerusalem. The detailed accounts of the Jordanian attack upon Israel thinking that the Egyptians had destroyed the Israeli air force, are worth reading in themselves.

3 out of 5 stars Should have been better.......2000-03-05

This book is dedicated exclusively to the 1967 "Six-Day War," and I bought it with great anticipation. It's not bad, but it should have been much better. Hammel goes into details that enrich the story, but which, in too many instances, mean very little to the history of events. His prelude to the actual shooting isn't as clear nor as complete as it was expected, since he totally neglects the role of Intelligence in mapping the entire Golan Heights before 1967 and knowing exactly when and where to strike in the Sinai and deep into Egypt: that part of the war does not exist for Hammel, and without it Israel would not have won. Also, little or nothing is provided of the Arab leaders and their associates. Reading the "Arab-Israeli Reader" by Laqueur and Rubin, it's clear that Egyptians and Syrians expected a war, were relatively confident of victory, and were, in the end, totally unprepared for the swiftness and the accuracy of the Israeli blows. We get very little from Hammel, as if Israel had acted in a vacuum. The battle sections of the book are good but, again, the war ended on June 10, 1967, but it did not end, not really. Something more was needed. There was diplomacy, threats, and total confusion and incredulity in the Arab world. The book reads fast because it is well writen, but A.J. Barker's "The Arab-Israeli Wars" does a better job.

If This Is a Man offers a powerful glimpse into life in a concentration camp. It is emotional as well as inforamtive.

5 out of 5 stars Mandatory in the best way.......2007-05-17

It's been a while since I read this book. My girlfriend pulled it off my shelf of her own accord, and she's reading it now. It's one of those books that every thinking person should read. Other reviewers have conveyed its gist very well. It's not really like other Holocaust literature, as important as that school is. It's more concerned with the capability of human beings to absolutely degrade one another. Auschwitz is a stewpot in which the worst of human nature bubbles to the top and sets the bar.

One would think the average camp prisoner would have put his head down numbly and hoped to get out alive. Levi somehow was able to observe and work through the ramifications of nearly every aspect of camp life, not with numbness, but with serene clarity (at least as he writes it later). Everything related in this book is literal and symbolic, mundane and profound, degraded yet fundamental. Levi doesn't spare himself, either. As he put it, to die in Auschwitz, all one had to do was play by the rules. He cheated, stole, and turned his back on his fellows in order to stay alive, and no fellow prisoner who knew the rules of Auschwitz would have held it against him. So much for uniting against one's oppressors.

I should add that "The Truce" tells the story of Levi's very circuitous journey home from Poland to Italy, through a post-war Europe that was barely functional on any level. It is less bleak by far than "If This Is A Man", but the insights into human nature are similiarly profound and essential.

5 out of 5 stars Heart-breaking but informative and important.......2005-04-07

A truly amazing book - I cannot promise that you will enjoy it, in fact I can almost guarantee that you will find most of it heart-breaking and painful.

It is a little like watching Kieslowski's A Short Film About Killing - on many levels you do not enjoy it but it enthrals you. The subject matter is so important and it is so beautifully made and eloquent that you feel compelled to watch (or read in the case of Levi).

Levi tells the story of his own internment in Auschwitz - he concentrates on the details of everyday life slowing building a vivid picture of how the Nazis were intent on not just killing them but breaking their spirit, humiliating them, degrading them. He captures many moments so well that they live on in the mind, for example when he describes how the terrible regime made Jew turn on Jew. He even manages to raise a guilty smile occasionally. For example, he describes the second worst thing that could happen at night was to take out the toilet bucket as it was always full to overflowing and would spill on your feet. The worst thing was when your bunkmate took it out as they shared bunks sleeping head to toe.

Levi is a fantastic writer (try the Periodic Table if you want to read something easier and more enjoyable) with a light touch. He describes his time in Auschwitz calmly, clearly, with great compassion but remarkably objectively; he gives the reader space to think and understand.

A work of heart-breaking genius

5 out of 5 stars If this is a man; and The Truce.......2005-02-03

Primo Levi is the most insightful, pragmatic realist of all holocaust authors. I have read more than 50 books on the subject, and his insights into what happened, human nature, the (bad) luck of the draw, and the tragedy of his experience are brilliant and by far the most articulate. Somehow, perhaps with his scientific mind, Levi was able to maintain his awareness through an experience that is utterly beyond the scope of imagination. He somehow emerges from the ashes of this horrific epoch like a literary phoenix. He doesn't dwell on the inhuman acts and suffering, although he has a perfect right to do so, but instead offers his account almost from an omniscient perspective. This book contains the best of Primo Levi, but his other writings demand to be read as well. And, if you haven't seen The Truce, starring John Turturro, you should do so. It's not a hundred percent historically accurate, but it is a great presentation.

5 out of 5 stars illuminating.......2004-06-18

Primo Levi's "If This is a Man" and "The Truce" remain one of the most horrifyingly realistic depictions of life in Auschwitz. Primo Levi recounts the daily ordeals of life in Auschwitz with a stirring and poignant narration, concentrating on not only the physical and emotional hardship but on another level questioning plainly what it is to be human. Both books present an illuminating view into life in a prison camp, and Primo Levi's narration ensure that no suffering remains untold. An illuminating read.

Born in Alabama in 1915, Baptist preacher turned underground artist Howard Finster claims to have had his first vision at the age of three. Inspired by the word of God, visitations from the dead, and religious visions, Finster has described himself as a stranger from another world and a divine messenger. His mission: to save the world with his art. With such titles as "American Devils Are Very Friendly" and "Judge No Man by Yourself," Finster's obsessive paintings, constructions, and sculptures have been exhibited all over the world, from Los Angeles to SoHo to the Venice Biennale. The text, transcribed from hundreds of hours of taped interviews, is at once disturbing and fascinating.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a book that I had to read every single page of!.......2000-12-14

This trilogy by Maggie Shayne contained the first of her work I had read. How sorry I am about that! I am ill a lot and to add up my book bill by the end of each month even makes me wince, let alone my husband. :) But I gotta have more of Maggie Shayne.

The first story, Miranda's Viking, was refreshingly new in concept. The fact that Rolf Magnusson's character was portrayed as extremely intelligent is believable to anyone who knows a little of the history of the Vikings at that time. They were great strategists and indeed had settled much of the coastlines of northern Europe.

The second story was a bit more predictable with an amnesia victim, but with surprising suspense twists and turns that made it very riviting. Ms. Shayne's 'people' (it's hard to call them characters they seem so human) have the same doubts, hurts and misunderstandings that happen to us all.

Finally, I loved the third story the most. Janella was alien; from another world similar to Earth. It actually follows what I believe may be true. And her doctor, Thomas Duffy, also exhibited those very human feelings that I spoke of above. Truly believable, and absolutely a fantastic read. I could not speak more highly of an author.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You!.......2000-09-21

I am so glad the they are finally republishing this trilogy! It made me such a fan of this author. The bats of the night trilogy is great! I read all of them over and over. Now that they've been out of print for a while they've been hard to find. But now! I can't wait to get this. For those who love the vampire genre this is an absolute must buy. And for those who love Maggie Shayne this is a great chance to get the books that really jumpstarted her career. ENJOY!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Compilation.......2000-09-20

The three stories in this compilation are fun and different.

In the first story, Miranda's Viking, Miranda O'Shea finds a 500-year-old Viking perfectly preserved in a glacial cave. When Rolf Magnusson comes to life after an accident reanimates him things become complicated for Miranda, and murder and mayhem ensue. This was a fun novel, with a great plot line and likable characters. <- Great Story

In Kiss of the Shadow Man Caitlin Rossi loses her memory after a near fatal car accident and she and her husband are granted a second chance at love. That is if Caitlin can stay alive long enough. This story was filled with suspense and love. <- Great story

In Out-of-this World Marriage Thomas Duffy is a doctor who has lost his faith in his vocation after one hopeless case to many w3hen his faith is restored by an alien who loves him. <- Mediocre story.

This is definitely worth the 6.99 that I paid for it. All of these stories are reprints.

    Book Description

This ManÂ's Army follows one extraordinary young manÂ's transformation from Ivy League student to twenty-first-century warrior. Soldier X vividly brings to life his journey through ROTC training, the grueling trials of the elite Ranger School, and into the treacherous terrain of the Shah-e-Kot Valley in Afghanistan. There he leads his men to root out the hardcore remnants of Osama bin LadenÂ's forces, and must confront and kill an Al Qaeda fighter. On his return to the United States, Soldier X must face how media coverage has distorted public perception of the war back home as he seeks to make peace with the man he had become.

In the tradition of Tim OÂ'BrienÂ's If I Die in a Combat Zone, This ManÂ's Army is a gripping story of a young manÂ's introduction to the horrors of war, reported with brutal honesty and compelling insight. By turns harrowing and inspiring, it is the first account of combat from a new generation that is rising to confront the grave threat that faces our civilization and our way of life.

5 out of 5 stars First to fight the War on Terror.......2006-12-29

"This Man's Army: A Soldier's Story from the Front Lines of the War on Terrorism" by Andrew Exum is about a small town boy who was an Army lieutenant with my unit, 10th Mountain Division (though he was infantry, I was not) who was the first to be deployed to Afghanistan right after September 11th. But before we get to that we go through his college years, how he turned to the Army for tuition, and go a purpose for his life. Then after graduating he got his commission and went through Ranger school, the toughest training event of his life, and for me the best part of the book. Then he gets to Ft. Drum, NY and that part really hit home for me. Actually Exum is a lot like me in many ways. He is a small town boy from East Tennessee, just like me, and he also deployed to Afghanistan with 10th Mountain, also like me. Maybe that is why I identified with Lt. Exum so much, I could have been like him if I wa s a little more ambitious. The Afghanistan parts is not the action book stuff that you might think, though there is some fighting, it is not Rambo style. War is ugly, and Exum shows it just that way, with all the problems that come with waging modern war; the bombs, tactical mistakes from relying on computers, boredom of tedious convoy escort, and worst of all, the media and it's effect on the chain of command. I know and understand his frustration at times, though ultimately his view of the Army is quiet a bit more optimistic than my own. I have read reviews below that are critical of Exum's references to PT and his physique; all I can say is it's part of the infantry culture, they (and indeed myself included) just wouldn't understand unless they were there. I would rank "This Man's Army" with "Jarhead" (though Exum is not as much of a jerk as Andrew Schwofford seemed to be) as an overview of a career. It is not about an incident like "Black Hawk Down" or "Robert's Ridge", but still fascinating reading for military buffs.

4 out of 5 stars Not for RAMBO lovers..........2006-08-14

If your expecting a "bangem shootem up" high intensity combat epic this book is not for you. Captain Andrew Exum(USA)instead
gives a very human account of his road to Afganistan, in the wake of 9/11. He is suddenly transformed from a poetic Ivy Leaguer to a combat infantryman, in the famed 10th Mountain Division(Sen. Bob Dole's old unit). Using ROTC as a financial supplement like many average folk, Exum is faced with the unexpected and answers his countries call to duty as members of his family did generations past. He strives to be the best by surviving the Army's elite Ranger school. His exploits there are almost as grueling as his combat duty in Afganistan. The physical endurance due to the altitude of that mountainous country that he and the men he leads as they perform their duty is told in detail. The mission of demolition of Afgan caves is a tedious task as one doesn't know what lurks in and around them. Exum seems to be a very logical young soldier and even incorporates literary quotes from his college days. Talk about a clash of cultures! I am not sure if he is ever privey to high military intelligence of the war on terrorism as his unit seems to cover special forces operatives, a dirty kind of business none the less. Exum's book could have been titled "The Days In The Life Of A 21st Century American Soldier". He details a lot of the frustration of "the hurry up and wait" military mindset. Pranks and pure bordem set in as well as army life in general. All throughtout Exum has great affection and a sense of responsiblity to his men. He is not bigger than the whole picture and I find him humble in his writing even though he excelled in all of the Army's demands. Now get the book! I don't want to give anything else away :)

2 out of 5 stars Much ado about nothing.......2006-01-17

A competently written if somewhat unexciting memoir of one man's brief deployment overseas. What should have been a decent magazine article is stretched uncomfortably into a 236 page paean to the greatness that is the author. In between the endlessly self aggrandizing descriptions of his physical prowess (aided by a fitness regime of constant chest beating), his innate leadership skills and naturally commanding respect from every soldier or superior he meets, the author manages to turn several months deployed in Afghanistan into a lengthy recitation of "Me, me, me and I".

You know something is wrong when a page each is wasted respectively to his complaints on being debriefed after his (solitary) shooting, a Chaplin's attempt to console him, a reporter describing him as 24 (as opposed to 23) and even more pages are devoted to gloating over his cheating during later maneuvers in the National Training Center. His short stint in the military and shallow knowledge is exemplified by repeatedly referring to "nap-of-the-earth" flying as "map-of-the-earth".

Similar yet much better reads are "My War" and "Jarhead".

    5 out of 5 stars Captain Exum's experience as a soldier.......2005-07-06

Andrew Exum enlisted in the Army thinking that military service would be a good way to pay for his education at the University of Pennsylvania as well as serve his country in peacetime. He thought that he would likely serve in peacekeeping duties in Europe or perhaps Africa, but not actually see combat. There was value, in his mind, of Army service even in the peacetime. He had enlisted in the Army ROTC as a student and became an officer in 2000. September 11 changed the nature of what his service would be.

"This Man's Army" is Captain Exum's story of his time as a soldier. He details his reasons for enlisting, what sort of upbringing he had, and what his experience was in training and on the battlefield. Exum offers a fresh perspective of the life of an Army officer. While books like Anthony Swofford's "Jarhead" and Joel Turnipseed's "Baghdad Express" offer accounts of the modern day disillusioned soldier (both about Gulf War I), Captain Exum is a motivated leader of men who takes pride in his work, his platoon, and his Army. He does not blindly accept political rhetoric, and unlike many military men Exum is far from being a staunch Republican. He struggles to fit what he must do as a soldier with his beliefs as a Christian, but accepts that there are times that fighting for the greater good can supercede personal belief.

Readers looking for a book filled with combat and blazing guns should look someplace else (perhaps Evan Wright's excellent "Generation Kill"). "This Man's Army" is the experience of Captain Andrew Exum, and while the nature of his service did include quite a bit of risk, stress, being shot at, and completing valuable missions in Afghanistan; there are not many gun battles or what would traditionally be thought of as "battlefield combat". Yet, "This Man's Army" is compulsively readable and was a book I did not want to put down. Exum's descriptions of his training, going through Ranger school, and his style (and experiences) of leadership is fascinating. While I am glad that Exum is out of harm's way now, I wish he was still able to serve in the Army because our military and our country needs more men of his character and apparent ability. He is the sort of man I want protecting our country.

Captain Exum also gives an excellent description of how a soldier comes home and tries to adapt to a life where he does not have a rifle in his hand. How he has to adapt to paying for things again, fight the feeling that he is "entitled" to things because of his service, and just become a civilian again.

Something else that I found very interesting was that if he wasn't injured (outside of combat), Exum would have been part of the mission which rescued Private Jessica Lynch. Having to watch that on television was a very difficult thing for Captain Exum, not the least of which because he was still in uniform.

Overall I found "This Man's Army" to be an excellent account of Andrew Exum's time in the military and what one possible experience of a modern day soldier is. It isn't exactly what one might consider a traditional war memoir, but this is also a different kind of war. I would recommend this book without hesitation, just with the understanding that there is a very small amount of actual combat or field action.

    4 out of 5 stars Awesome Book.......2005-06-07

I thought this book written by Andrew Exum a Ranger in the US army is a great book for people with all interests. It tells of the life of a soldier in the war against terrorism and the experiences that one lives through or may not live thorugh. No matter what your liking you will enjoy this book and the great simplistic reality of the book as you read it. This book is one of a few of its kind and should with out a doubt be read. I give this book two-thumbs up and would read it agian without a fuss at all.

      Book Description

Shortly after his retirement, author Robert S. Ashton buys a 1983 Nordic 40 sailboat. He names the boat Chandelle, not realizing at the time that it will be his home for the next ten years.

Along with his friends, Don, Roger, and Martha, Ashton soon joins a group of boats preparing to brave the Gulf Stream and adjacent waters from Norfolk, Virginia, to the Caribbean. During the next ten years, "Captain" Ashton sails to numerous destinations in his quest to circumnavigate the globe, including the Panama Canal, the Galapagos Islands, the Fiji Islands, Africa, and Australia. Ashton meets an eclectic group of people, experiences a variety of cultures, finds new members for his crew, and discovers the freedom of sailing the open waters.
